Reassessment of Dose Contributions from the Paducah Cask Special Waste Form Buried in the E-Area Low-Level Waste Facility

During a recent revision to the groundwater and inadvertent human intruder screening analysis report (Aleman and Hamm, 2023), weaknesses within the screening logic were observed resulting in the addition of U-235 being brought back into the list of radionuclides requiring inventory limits within the Paducah Cask special waste form (SWF). In addition, while reviewing the earlier vadose zone transport analysis efforts, an inconsistency was observed in the initial U-235P inventory that was supplied to the Consolidated Waste Tracking System (CWTS) back in 2009.

Reassessment of Dose Contributions from the M-Area Glass Special Waste Form Buried in the E-Area Low-Level Waste Facility

During a recent revision to the groundwater (GW) and inadvertent human intruder (IHI) screening analysis report (Aleman and Hamm, 2023), weaknesses within the screening logic were observed resulting in U-235 being brought back into the list of radionuclides requiring inventory limits within the M-Area Glass SWF. In addition, while reviewing the earlier vadose zone (VZ) transport analysis efforts, an input deck error was observed in the U-234G VZ transport simulation.

Microstructure Optimization and Novel Processing Development of ODS Steels for Fusion Environments (Final ARPA-E Report)

This project aimed to develop scalable, cost-effective fabrication of high-performance, oxide- dispersion-strengthened (ODS) steel using advanced manufacturing methods (AMMs) for fusion blanket-breeding applications. Gas atomization reaction synthesis (GARS) enables the synthesis of precursor ODS steel powders without prolonged mechanical alloying. This process creates a chromium (Cr)-enriched surface oxide with yttrium/titanium (Y/Ti)-enriched intermetallics in powder interiors. GARS powders were consolidated to >99% of the theoretical density using a first-of-a-kind shear assisted processing and extrusion (ShAPE) and laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF) AM processes. These processes led to ODS steels containing a high-density of nano-oxide dispersoids that enhance high-temperature mechanical properties. Such scalable, cost-effective fabrication of ODS steels can enable efficient power conversion cycles (=40%) at operating temperatures beyond 900 K in future fusion power plants.

Final Report for ARPA-E LOCOMOTIVES Advanced Locomotive Technology and Rail Infrastructure Optimization System (ALTRIOS) Project

The Advanced Locomotive Technology and Rail Infrastructure Optimization System (ALTRIOS) is a unique, fully integrated, open-source software tool used to evaluate strategies for cost-effectively deploying advanced locomotive technologies and associated infrastructure. ALTRIOS simulates freight-demand-driven train scheduling, mainline meet-pass planning, locomotive dynamics, train dynamics, energy conversion efficiencies, and energy storage dynamics of line-haul train operations. Because new locomotives represent a significant long-term capital investment and new technologies must be thoroughly demonstrated before deployment, this tool provides guidance on the risk/reward trade-offs and operation integration of different technology rollout strategies. An open, integrated simulation tool is valuable for identifying future research needs and making decisions on technology development, routes, and train selection. This final report details the ALTRIOS software architecture, major modules and components, and data validation process. It demonstrates the software's utility through a 30-year rollout case study targeting high penetration of advanced powertrain technologies by 2050 for two BNSF Railway routes: loaded taconite ore trains from Hibbing, Minnesota, to Superior, Wisconsin, and mixed-freight trains from Superior to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

ARPA-E Grid Optimization (GO) Competition Challenge 3

Synthetic Input Data and Team Results for the GO Competition Challenge 3 for Events 1 - 4 and the Sandbox, along with problem and format descriptions and code to validate data and solutions, are available here. Data for industry scenarios will not be made public. The Grid Optimization (GO) Competition Challenge 3 focused on the security-constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) problem. It is part of a continuing effort begun with Challenges 1 and 2, to successfully discover, develop, and test innovative and disruptive software solutions for critical energy challenges and to overcome existing barriers. The broader goal of the of the GO Competition is to accelerate the development of transformational and disruptive methods for solving problems related to the electric power grid and to provide a transparent, fair, and comprehensive evaluation of new solution methods. Challenge 3 used multiperiod dynamic markets, including advisory models for extreme weather events, day-ahead markets, and the real-time markets with an extended look-ahead. In Event 4, whose submission window was August 31-September 4, 2023, 14 teams solved for the objective values of 669 scenarios (39 scenarios required solutions both with and without line switching being allowed). The 591 synthetic scenarios from 9 network models (3.6 GB) are available here. Ten teams were funded to participate and 7 won prizes totaling $2,400,000. The largest prize ($550,000) went to Mississippi State University. An additional $600,000 was awarded in Event 3 (6/15-16/2023). No prizes were awarded in Events 1 (1/25-27/2023) or 2 (4/13-14/2023). For more information on the competition and challenge see the "GO Competition Challenge 3 Information" resource below.

Inhibition of ethylene involved in resistance to E. turcicum in an exotic-derived double haploid maize population

Northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) is an economically important disease of maize. While the genetic architecture of NCLB has been well characterized, the pathogen is known to overcome currently deployed resistance genes, and the role of hormones in resistance to NCLB is an area of active research. The objectives of the study were (i) to identify significant markers associated with resistance to NCLB, (ii) to identify metabolic pathways associated with NCLB resistance, and (iii) to examine role of ethylene in resistance to NCLB. We screened 252 lines from the exotic-derived double haploid BGEM maize population for resistance to NCLB in both field and greenhouse environments. We used a genome wide association study (GWAS) and stepwise regression to identify four markers associated with resistance, followed by a pathway association study tool (PAST) to identify important metabolic pathways associated with disease severity and incubation period. The ethylene synthesis pathway was significant for disease severity and incubation period. We conducted a greenhouse assay in which we inhibited ethylene to examine the role of ethylene in resistance to NCLB. We observed a significant increase in incubation period and a significant decrease in disease severity between plants treated with the ethylene inhibitor and mock-treated plants. Our study confirms the potential of the BGEM population as a source of novel alleles for resistance. We also confirm the role of ethylene in resistance to NCLB and contribute to the growing body of literature on ethylene and disease resistance in monocots.

Atomic-scale e-beam sculptor

A system and method (referred to as the system) fabricates controllable atomic assemblies in two and three dimensions. The systems identify by a non-invasive imager, a local atomic structure, distribution of vacancies, and dopant atoms and modify, by a microscopic modifier, the local atomic structure, via electron beam irradiation. The systems store, by a knowledge base, cause-and-effect relationships based on a non-invasive imaging and electron scans. The systems detect, by detectors, changes in the local atomic structure induced by the electron irradiation; and fabricate, a modified atomic structure by a beam control software and feedback.
