Detection of active and latent infections with microfluidic devices and systems thereof

The present invention relates to methods of detecting one or more targets of interest in a sample. In one instance, the target can be correlated to an active infection (e.g., by a virus and/or a bacterium). Methods can include treating the sample with a dissociation agent, thereby releasing the target of interest for more accurate detection (e.g., by use of a sedimentation-based centrifugal microfluidic devices). Also described herein are microfluidic devices and systems for use with a dissociation agent.

Copper Defects and Charge Collection in Cadmium Telluride Photovoltaic Devices

In CdTe photovoltaic devices, the CdTe layer must be doped with Cu to reduce its resistivity, increase carrier lifetime, and improve hole transport. However, the Cu concentration is typically very low around the interfaces and within the CdTe layer, making it difficult to determine the influence Cu has on charge transport at the nanoscale; Cu concentrations are difficult to detect due to low ionization probability of Cu atoms [1]. Here, we use synchrotron X-ray microscopy to probe the nanoscale distribution of Cu and correlate it to local charge collection in CdTe photovoltaic devices. We demonstrate Cu segregation around grain boundaries, and, using cross-section charge collection measurements and transport modelling, show recombination center concentration in the CdTe layer dictates the interface at which charge collection occurs. The work gives insights on how Cu distributes in CdTe photovoltaic systems, and an understanding of how these distributions affect charge transport.

Dual frequency transceiver device

A transceiver device for receiving an interrogation signal at a first carrier frequency and for transmitting a response signal at a second carrier frequency is disclosed. The interrogation signal comprises the first carrier frequency modulated at the second carrier frequency. The communication device includes a sensor coupled to a demodulator. The sensor receives a low frequency input used to further modulate the interrogation signal. The demodulator demodulates the low frequency input from the first carrier frequency to thereby generate the response signal comprising the second carrier frequency and the low frequency input. The demodulator preferably includes a pyroelectric demodulator, a piezoelectric demodulator, or a detector diode. The demodulator preferably has a frequency response less than the first carrier frequency but greater than the second carrier frequency.

Strain control in optoelectronic devices

A coating having a mismatched coefficient of thermal expansion is applied to an underlying light emitting diode (LED) or laser diode (LD), such that as the temperature of the device changes, a varying level of strain is introduced to the underlying LED or LD. Because strain can also adjust the effective bandgap energy (and hence emission wavelength) of the device, the external strain-inducing coating can act to either compensate for the wavelength shift due to temperature (resulting in reduced dλ/dT) or accentuate it (resulting in increased dλ/dT). By proper selection of coating material and geometry, full control over dλ/dT can be achieved.

hls4ml: An Open-Source Codesign Workflow to Empower Scientific Low-Power Machine Learning Devices

Accessible machine learning algorithms, software, and diagnostic tools for energy-efficient devices and systems are extremely valuable across a broad range of application domains. In scientific domains, real-time near-sensor processing can drastically improve experimental design and accelerate scientific discoveries. To support domain scientists, we have developed hls4ml, an open-source software-hardware codesign workflow to interpret and translate machine learning algorithms for implementation with both FPGA and ASIC technologies. We expand on previous hls4ml work by extending capabilities and techniques towards low-power implementations and increased usability: new Python APIs, quantization-aware pruning, end-to-end FPGA workflows, long pipeline kernels for low power, and new device backends include an ASIC workflow. Taken together, these and continued efforts in hls4ml will arm a new generation of domain scientists with accessible, efficient, and powerful tools for machine-learning-accelerated discovery.

Performance of a Hybrid HVAC-Integrated Thermal Storage Device

Thermal equipment in buildings is a primary contributor to peak loads on the electrical grid. Thermal energy storage is a cost-effective strategy to decouple electric use from thermal loads, thus reducing grid peak costs for building owners. One method for storing thermal energy in a building is to integrate a phase change material (PCM) directly into the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. These systems often require additional glycol loops, pumps, valves, and heat exchangers to couple the storage to the cooling system and building space, which increases the complexity and cost. This work will discuss an alternate approach where the storage is added directly into the heat pump evaporator. A detailed two-dimensional finite difference heat transfer model of a PCM-refrigerant-glycol heat exchanger was developed to simulate the performance of this component. The fluid stream was discretized along the flow direction to capture changes in the fluid properties and local heat transfer rates, and the phase change material was discretized in both the x and y directions to capture the movement of the melt front. The model was used to understand the impact of different material and geometric properties on the charge and discharge characteristics of the device. Finally, a Ragone framework analogous to that used for electrochemical batteries was used to maximize the energy density and round-trip efficiency of the device while supplying loads appropriate for space cooling in buildings.

SuperScreen: An open-source package for simulating the magnetic response of two-dimensional superconducting devices

Quantitative understanding of the spatial distribution of magnetic fields and Meissner screening currents in two-dimensional (2D) superconductors and mesoscopic thin film superconducting devices is critical to interpreting the results of magnetic measurements of such systems. Here, we introduce SuperScreen, an open-source Python package for simulating the response of 2D superconductors to trapped flux and applied time-independent or quasi-DC magnetic fields for any value of the effective magnetic penetration depth, Λ. Given an applied magnetic field, SuperScreen solves the 2D London equation using an efficient matrix inversion method to obtain the Meissner currents and magnetic fields in and around structures composed of one or more superconducting thin films of arbitrary geometry with spatially nonuniform magnetic penetration depth. SuperScreen can be used to model screening effects and calculate self- and mutual-inductance in superconducting devices, and simulate the magnetic response of inhomogeneous 2D superconductors.
