Search for new Higgs bosons via same-sign top quark pair production in association with a jet in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for new Higgs bosons in proton-proton (pp) collision events in which a same-sign top quark pair is produced in association with a jet, via the pp $\to$ tH/A $\to$ t$\mathrm{\bar{t}}$c and pp $\to$ tH/A $\to$ t$\mathrm{\bar{t}}$u processes. Here, H and A represent the extra scalar and pseudoscalar boson, respectively, of the second Higgs doublet in the generalized two-Higgs-doublet model (g2HDM). The search is based on pp collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Final states with a same-sign lepton pair in association with jets and missing transverse momentum are considered. New Higgs bosons in the 200-1000 GeV mass range and new Yukawa couplings between 0.1 and 1.0 are targeted in the search, for scenarios in which either H or A appear alone, or in which they coexist and interfere. No significant excess above the standard model prediction is observed. Exclusion limits are derived in the context of the g2HDM.

Measurement of 𝐽∕𝜓and 𝜓(2𝑆)production in 𝑝 +𝑝and 𝑝 +𝑑interactions at 120 GeV

We report the p + p and p + d differential cross sections measured in the SeaQuest experiment for J/psi and psi(2S) production at 120GeV beam energy covering the forward x-Feynman (x(F)) range of 0.5 < x(F) < 0.9. The measured cross sections are in good agreement with theoretical calculations based on the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) using the long-distance matrix elements deduced from a recent global analysis of proton- and pion-induced charmonium production data. The sigma(psi(2S))/sigma(J/psi) cross section ratios are found to increase as x(F) increases, indicating that the q (q) over bar. annihilation process has larger contributions in the psi(2S) production than the J/psi production. The sigma(pd)/2 sigma(pp) cross section ratios are observed to be significantly different for the DrellYan process and J/psi production, reflecting their different production mechanisms. We find that the sigma(pd)/2 sigma(pp) ratios for J/psi production at the forward x(F) region are sensitive to the (d) over bar/(u) over bar flavor asymmetry of the proton sea, analogous to the Drell-Yan process. The transverse momentum (p(T)) distributions for J/psi and psi(2S) production are also presented and compared with data collected at higher center-of-mass energies.

Observation of e⁺e⁻ → pp$\bar{p}\bar{n}\pi^-$ + c. c.

Using data taken at 29 center-of-mass energies between 4.16 and 4.70 GeV with the BESIII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of approximately 18.8 fb -1 , the process e⁺e⁻ → pp$\overline{p}\overline{n}\pi^-$ + c. c. is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 11.5σ. The average Born cross sections in the energy ranges of (4.160, 4.380) GeV, (4.400, 4.600) GeV and (4.610, 4.700) GeV are measured to be (21.5 ± 5.7 ± 1.2) fb, (46.3 ± 10.6 ± 2.5) fb and (59.0 ± 9.4 ± 3.2) fb, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The line shapes of the $\overline{p}\overline{n}$ and ppπ⁻ invariant mass spectra are consistent with phase space distributions, indicating that no hexaquark or di-baryon state is observed.

Planting a Lyman alpha forest on ABACUSSUMMIT

The full-shape correlations of the Lyman alpha (Ly$α$) forest contain a wealth of cosmological information through the Alcock Paczynski effect. However, these measurements are challenging to model without robustly testing and verifying the theoretical framework used for analyzing them. Here, we leverage the accuracy and volume of the $N$-body simulation suite ABACUSSUMMIT to generate high-resolution Ly$α$ skewers and quasi-stellar object (QSO) catalogs. One of the main goals of our mocks is to aid in the full-shape Ly$α$ analysis planned by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) team. We provide optical depth skewers for six of the fiducial cosmology base-resolution simulations ($L$ box = 2 $h$ -1 Gpc, $N$ = 6912 3 ) at $z$ = 2.5. We adopt a simple recipe based on the Fluctuating Gunn-Peterson Approximation (FGPA) for constructing these skewers from the matter density in an $N$-body simulation and calibrate it against the 1D and 3D Ly$α$ power spectra extracted from the hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG (TNG; $L$ box = 205 $h$ -1 Mpc, $N$ = 2500 3 ). As an important application, we study the non-linear broadening of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak and show the cross-correlation between DESI-like QSOs and our Ly$α$ forest skewers. We find differences on small scales between the Kaiser approximation prediction and our mock measurements of the Ly$α$×QSO cross-correlation, which would be important to account for in upcoming analyses. The ABACUSSUMMIT Ly$α$ forest mocks open up the possibility for improved modelling of cross correlations between Ly$α$ and cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing and Ly$α$ and QSOs, and for forecasts of the 3-point Ly$α$ correlation function. Furthermore, our catalogues and skewers are publicly available on Globus via the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) (full link under Data Availability).

Search for the lepton-flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson and additional Higgs bosons in the e μ final state in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for the lepton-flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson and potential additional Higgs bosons with a mass in the range 110-160 GeV to an e$^{\pm}\mu^{\mp}$ pair is presented. The search is performed with a proton-proton collision data set at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. No excess is observed for the Higgs boson. The observed (expected) upper limit on the e$^{\pm}\mu^{\mp}$ branching fraction for it is determined to be 4.4 (4.7) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ at 95% confidence level, the most stringent limit set thus far from direct searches. The largest excess of events over the expected background in the full mass range of the search is observed at an e$^{\pm}\mu^{\mp}$ invariant mass of approximately 146 GeV with a local (global) significance of 3.8 (2.8) standard deviations.

Study of e + e − → π + π − π 0 at s from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV at BESIII

With the data samples taken at center-of-mass energies from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, a partial wave analysis on the e + e − → π + π − π 0 process is performed. The Born cross sections for e + e − → π + π − π 0 and its intermediate processes e + e − → ρ π and ρ ( 1450 ) π are measured as functions of s . The results for e + e − → π + π − π 0 are consistent with previous results measured with the initial state radiation method within one standard deviation, and improve the uncertainty by a factor of ten. By fitting the line shapes of the Born cross sections for the e + e − → ρ π and e + e − → ρ ( 1450 ) π , a structure with mass M = 2119 ± 11 ± 15 MeV / c 2 and width Γ = 69 ± 30 ± 5 MeV is observed with a significance of 5.9 σ , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. This structure can be interpreted as an excited ω state. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for the rare decay of charmed baryon Λ c + into the p μ + μ − final state

A search for the nonresonant Λ c + → p μ + μ − decay is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 . No evidence for the decay is found in the dimuon invariant-mass regions where the expected contributions of resonances is subdominant. The upper limit on the branching fraction of the Λ c + → p μ + μ − decay is determined to be 2.9 ( 3.2 ) × 10 − 8 at 90 % ( 95 % ) confidence level. The branching fractions in the dimuon invariant-mass regions dominated by the η , ρ and ω resonances are also determined. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Test of lepton flavor universality in semileptonic 𝐵$^+_𝑐$ meson decays in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the ratio of branching fractions 𝑅⁢(𝐽/𝜓) =ℬ⁡(𝐵$^+_𝑐$ →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 )/ℬ⁡(𝐵$^+_𝑐$ →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜇 + ⁢𝜈 𝜇 ) in the 𝐽/𝜓 →𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − , 𝜏 + →𝜇 + ⁢𝜈 𝜇 ⁢$\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜏 decay channel is presented. This measurement uses a sample of proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment in 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 59.7 fb −1 . The measured ratio, 𝑅⁢(𝐽/𝜓) = 0.1⁢7$^{+0.18}_{−0.17}⁢$(stat)$^{+0.21}_{−0.22⁢}$(syst)$^{+0.19}_{−0.18}$⁢(theo) =0.17 ± 0.33, agrees with the value of 0.2582 ± 0.0038 predicted by the standard model, which assumes lepton flavor universality. By testing lepton flavor universality, this measurement is a probe of new physics using 𝐵$^+_𝑐$ mesons, which are currently only produced at the LHC.

Observation of D → K ¯ 1 ( 1270 ) μ + ν μ and test of lepton flavor universality with D → K ¯ 1 ( 1270 ) ℓ + ν ℓ

By analyzing 7.93 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider, we report the observation of the semimuonic decays of D + → K ¯ 1 ( 1270 ) 0 μ + ν μ and D 0 → K 1 ( 1270 ) − μ + ν μ with statistical significances of 12.5 σ and 6.0 σ , respectively. Their decay branching fractions are determined to be B [ D + → K ¯ 1 ( 1270 ) 0 μ + ν μ ] = ( 2.36 ± 0.2 0 − 0.27 + 0.18 ± 0.48 ) × 10 − 3 and B [ D 0 → K 1 ( 1270 ) − μ + ν μ ] = ( 0.78 ± 0.1 1 − 0.09 + 0.05 ± 0.15 ) × 10 − 3 , where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and the third originates from the input branching fraction of K ¯ 1 ( 1270 ) 0 → K − π + π 0 or K 1 ( 1270 ) − → K − π + π − . Combining our branching fractions with the previous measurements of B [ D + → K ¯ 1 ( 1270 ) 0 e + ν e ] and B [ D 0 → K 1 ( 1270 ) − e + ν e ] , we determine the branching fraction ratios to be B [ D + → K ¯ 1 ( 1270 ) 0 μ + ν μ ] / B [ D + → K ¯ 1 ( 1270 ) 0 e + ν e ] = 1.03 ± 0.14 − 0.15 + 0.11 and B [ D 0 → K 1 ( 1270 ) − μ + ν μ ] / B [ D 0 → K 1 ( 1270 ) − e + ν e ] = 0.74 ± 0.13 − 0.13 + 0.08 . Using the branching fractions measured in this work and the world-average lifetimes of the D + and D 0 mesons, we determine the semimuonic partial decay width ratio to be Γ [ D + → K ¯ 1 ( 1270 ) 0 μ + ν μ ] / Γ [ D 0 → K 1 ( 1270 ) − μ + ν μ ] = 1.22 ± 0.10 − 0.09 + 0.06 , which is consistent with unity as predicted by isospin conservation. Observation of Enhanced Long-Range Elliptic Anisotropies Inside High-Multiplicity Jets in p p Collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged particles using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . Jets are reconstructed with the anti- k T algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.8 and are required to have transverse momentum greater than 550 GeV and pseudorapidity | η jet | < 1.6 . Two-particle correlations among the charged particles within the jets are studied as functions of the particles’ azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity separations ( Δ ϕ * and Δ η * ) in a jet coordinate basis, where particles’ η * , ϕ * are defined relative to the direction of the jet. The correlation functions are studied in classes of in-jet charged-particle multiplicity up to N ch j ≈ 100 . Fourier harmonics are extracted from long-range azimuthal correlation functions to characterize azimuthal anisotropy for | Δ η * | > 2 . For low- N ch j jets, the long-range elliptic anisotropic harmonic, v 2 * , is observed to decrease with N ch j . This trend is well described by Monte Carlo event generators. However, a rising trend for v 2 * emerges at N ch j ≳ 80 , hinting at a possible onset of collective behavior, which is not reproduced by the models tested. This observation yields new insights into the dynamics of jet evolution in the vacuum. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN
