Application of strainrange partitioning to the prediction of creep-fatigue lives of AISI types 304 and 316 stainless steel

As a demonstration of the predictive capabilities of the method of Strainrange Partitioning, published high-temperature, low cycle, creep-fatigue test results on AISI Types 304 and 316 stainless steel were analyzed and calculated, cyclic lives compared with observed lives. Predicted lives agreed with observed lives within factors of two for 76 percent, factors of three for 93 percent, and factors of four for 98 percent of the laboratory tests analyzed. Agreement between observed and predicted lives is judged satisfactory considering that the data are associated with a number of variables (two alloys, several heats and heat treatments, a range of temperatures, different testing techniques, etc.) that are not directly accounted for in the calculations.

Orbit Transfer Systems with Emphasis on Shuttle Applications, 1986-1991

A systems study is presented for a transportation system which will follow the interim upper stage and spinning solid upper stage. Included are concepts, concept comparisons, trends, parametric data, etc. associated with the future system. Relevant technical and programmatic information is developed. This information is intended to focus future activity to identify attractive options and to summarize the major issues associated with the future development of the system. To establish a common basis for identifying current transportation concepts, an orbit transfer vehicle (OTV) is defined as a propulsive (velocity producing) rocket or stage. When used with a crew transfer module, a manned sortie module or other payloads, the combination becomes an orbit transfer system (OTS). Standardization of OTV's and OTS's is required.

High-density digital data recording/reproducing system

Problems associated with reliably recording and reproducing digital data at densities of 10 to 30 kilobits per inch and the solutions to these problems are discussed. The three problems are skew, dc offset, and tape imperfections. The solutions are to use a 14-track, wideband II tape recorder; record NRZ-L; use a 24-bit sync word, 504-bit frame length, and odd parity in every 8-bit byte; and to employ circuit design techniques that minimize the effects of the remaining dc offset and tape imperfections.

Some aspects of a free jet phenomena to 105 L/D in a constant area duct

The paper examines major constraints involved in the Borda tube free jet phenomena. Under certain conditions, inlets with a Borda type geometry show sufficiently strong separation effects to permit the working fluid to flow through the duct as if it were a 'free jet'. Mass limiting flow data and associated pressure profiles for tubes with L/D's ranging from 14 to 105 with a Borda type inlet were considered to determine bounds of the 'free jet' phenomena using fluid nitrogen. For a given tube roughness, the limits appear to be one dimensional and dependent only on inlet stagnation conditions. For smooth tubes, the upper L/D boundary is defined by an equation relating reduced pressure to reduced temperature, and the lower boundary represents saturation conditions at the inlet. Similar 'free jet' effects were found for fluid hydrogen indicating that fluid jetting may be common to all fluids.

Orbit transfer vehicle engine study. Phase A: Continuation (study results)

Studies included: selection of boost pump designs for low NPSH operation and generation of associated programmatic data; evaluation of OTV engine operation at intermediate thrust levels and impact on programmatics; and assessments of OTV engine operation at idle-mode thrusts under conditions experienced during aerobraking maneuvers of the ABOTV. As a result of the studies, it was recommended that the original OTV boost pump designs be used without change for low NPSH operation. Intermediate thrust operation is feasible for both the expander cycle and staged combustion cycles.

Spaceborne radar

The spaceborne radar panel considered how radar could be used to measure precipitation from satellites. The emphasis was on how radar could be used with radiometry (at microwave, visible (VIS), and infrared (IR) wavelengths) to reduce the uncertainties of measuring precipitation with radiometry alone. In addition, the fundamental electromagnetic interactions involved in the measurements were discussed to determine the key work areas for research and development to produce effective instruments. Various approaches to implementing radar systems on satellites were considered for both shared and dedicated instruments. Finally, a research and development strategy was proposed for establishing the parametric relations and retrieval algorithms required for extracting precipitation information from the radar and associated radiometric data.

Analyses via automated mass spectrometry (MS/DS)

New or improved uses of the Finnigan 4000 quadrupole mass spectrometer (MS) with its associated INCOS data system (DS) were investigated. The first phase involved an evaluative activity in which specific problems with miscalibration and gas chromatographic column conditioning were identified. This also revealed one solution to the problem of detection of substances not visible in the gas chromatography detection mode. A second phase was to seek useful applications of the direct inlet systems. This mode of sample introduction has not been previously utilized on the existing equipment and was successfully applied to the analysis of the components of TONOX 60/40 and in the thermal degradation products of some polymeric materials. Suggestions are made for improving and expanding the use of the MS/DS system in materials development and testing.

Flight investigation of cabin noise control treatments for a light turboprop aircraft

The in-flight evaluation of noise control treatments for a light, twin-engined turboprop aircraft presents several problems associated with data analysis and interpretation. These problems include data repeatability, propeller synchronization, spatial distributions of the exterior pressure field and acoustic treatment, and the presence of flanking paths. They are discussed here with regard to a specific aeroplane configuration. Measurements were made in an untreated cabin and in a cabin fitted with an experimental sidewall treatment. Results are presented in terms of the insertion loss provided by the treatment and comparison made with predictions based on laboratory measurements.

An application of expert systems technology to remotely sensed image analysis

In October of 1983, a project was initiated at NASA/Ames Research Center to design a prototype expert system capable of producing a preliminary land cover classification from an unsupervised classification of Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) imagery and associated collateral data. This paper outlines the problem of determining land cover classes from an unsupervised classification, presents a brief overview of expert systems, and continues with a description of the design and current state of implementation of NASA/Ames' prototype Landsat MSS image analysis expert system.

SAR imaging of bottom topography in the ocean: Results from an improved model

A two-space dimensional model, which is applicable to arbitrary bottom topography and wind, is applied to Seasat Revs. 762, 957, 1430, and 1473. The model includes the additional modulational effects of a long-wave field on the short Bragg waves, both in the presence of a variable current field and results compared to data. Modulations associated with other radar frequencies are also calculated under Rev. 762 conditions. It is shown that when the long-wave field effects are included, signature strength does not decrease with increasing radar frequency. The percentage enhancement due to long waves ranges from 7% for L band to 850% for K band.

The BATSE experiment on the Gamma Ray Observatory: Solar flare hard x ray and gamma-ray capabilities

The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) for the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) consists of eight detector modules that provide full-sky coverage for gamma-ray bursts and other transient phenomena such as solar flares. Each detector module has a thin, large-area scintillation detector (2025 sq cm) for high time-resolution studies, and a thicker spectroscopy detector (125 sq cm) to extend the energy range and provide better spectral resolution. The total energy range of the system is 15 keV to 100 MeV. These 16 detectors and the associated onboard data system should provide unprecedented capabilities for observing rapid spectral changes and gamma-ray lines from solar flares. The presence of a solar flare can be detected in real-time by BATSE; a trigger signal is sent to two other experiments on the GRO. The launch of the GRO is scheduled for June 1990, so that BATSE can be an important component of the Max '91 campaign.

X-ray spectral signatures of photoionized plasmas

Plasma emission codes have become a standard tool for the analysis of spectroscopic data from cosmic X-ray sources. However, the assumption of collisional equilibrium, typically invoked in these codes, renders them inapplicable to many important astrophysical situations, particularly those involving X-ray photoionized nebulae. This point is illustrated by comparing model spectra which have been calculated under conditions appropriate to both coronal plasmas and X-ray photoionized plasmas. It is shown that the (3s-2p)/(3d-2p) line ratios in the Fe L-shell spectrum can be used to effectively discriminate between these two cases. This diagnostic will be especially useful for data analysis associated with AXAF and XMM, which will carry spectroscopic instrumentation with sufficient sensitivity and resolution to identify X-ray photoionized nebulae in a wide range of astrophysical environments.
