Stabilizing a gaseous optical laser

Frequency of gaseous optical laser can be stabilized by sinusoidally modulating the geometry of the cavity. Fabry-Perot dielectric mirrors are mounted in two Invar blocks that are connected by four magnetorestrictive bars. Each bar has three coils to sinusoidally modulate system. Ac establishes frequency, and dc the average value; both are supplied to coil from control system.

Electrical screening procedure for solid ionic conductors

An electrical screening method has been developed for preliminary evaluation of polycrystalline specimens of candidates for use as solid ionic conductive electrolytes in batteries. The procedure measures dielectric loss and capacitance, from which are calculated an ac conductivity attributed provisionally to ions and an activation energy for that conductivity. Electronic conductivity is directly measured. The screening procedure applied to sodium beta-alumina yielded acceptable values for conductivity and activation energy.

Performance of electrical subsystem of 2- to 15-kilowatt Brayton power conversion system

The electrical subsystem of the 2-to 15-kilowatt Brayton power conversion system was evaluated under various operating and off-design temperature conditions in a vacuum environment. Overall operation was satisfactory. Speed controller operation is a major cause of distortion in the system ac voltage and current waveforms. This distortion has a small, but potentially significant effect on the performance of individual subsystem components.

Design and development of liquid hydrogen mixer unit

A dc brushless motor driven mixer unit (a vaneaxial fan) was designed and evaluated for use in cryogenic fluids (liquids and gases). It was found to operate well in all fluids in which it was tested. The test fluids were liquid and gaseous helium, hydrogen in the liquid phase gas phase and mixtures of the two phases, and liquid nitrogen. It operated for over 100 hr at cryogenic temperatures without damage to the bearings and at the conclusion of testing the condition of the bearings was such that an operational life of 5000 hr appeared possible. The unit demonstrated that (with the brushless dc motor principle) useful pumping of cryogenic fluids could be accomplished with very small power inputs to the mixer motor. During test, the motor input power varied from approximately 0.5 W to 2.5 W, depending on fluid density. The high power input produced a mixer efficiency of over 49 percent. In an earlier program (see NASA Report CR-72365), a mixer using an ac induction motor demonstrated an efficiency of 17.7 percent under the same conditions, illustrating the advantage of the dc brushless motor driven unit. The mixer also demonstrated its ability to automatically vary speed as a function of the density of the fluid being pumped. This causes the unit to deliver higher volumetric flow rates as fluid density decreases.

Magnetic materials selection for static inverter and converter transformers

A program to study magnetic materials is described for use in spacecraft transformers used in static inverters, converters, and transformer-rectifier supplies. Different magnetic alloys best suited for high-frequency and high-efficiency applications were comparatively investigated together with an investigation of each alloy's inherent characteristics. The materials evaluated were the magnetic alloys: (1) 50% Ni, 50% Fe; (2) 79% Ni, 17% Fe, 4% Mo; (3) 48% Ni, 52% Fe; (4) 78% Ni, 17% Fe, 5% Mo; and (5) 3% Si, 97% Fe. Investigations led to the design of a transformer with a very low residual flux. Tests were performed to determine the dc and ac magnetic properties at 2400 Hz using square-wave excitation. These tests were performed on uncut cores, which were then cut for comparison of the gapped and ungapped magnetic properties. When the data of many transformers in many configurations were compiled the optimum transformer was found to be that with the lowest residual flux and a small amount of air gap in the magnetic material. The data obtained from these tests are described, and the potential uses for the materials are discussed.

Transparent switchboard

A tin oxide coating is formed on a plate of glass and the coating is then etched away from the glass in thin lines to form separate electrical conductors which extend to one end of the plate and connect to either a vertical (column) or horizontal (row) position sensing SCR circuit. A thin transparent insulating coating is formed over the oxide layer except at selected touch points which are positioned in a matrix pattern of vertical columns and horizontal rows. Touching one of these points with a finger bridges the thin line between adjacent conductors to activate trigger circuits in the particular row and column sensing circuits associated with the point touched. The row and column sensing circuits are similar and are powered with a low frequency, ac voltage source. The source for the row circuits is 180 out of phase with the source for the column circuits so that one circuit acts as ground for the other during half of the supply voltage cycle. The signals from the sensing circuits are input to a logic circuit which determines the presence of a valid touch, stores a binary matrix number associated with the touched point, signals a computer of the presence of a stored number and prevents storage of a new number before receiving an enable signal from the computer.

Investigation of responsivity and noise in a direct-coupled photodetector-preamplifier for facsimile cameras

The direct-coupled (DC) mode of detector operation is evaluated for use in a facsimile camera. Photodiode-preamplifier sensitivity is described in terms of photodiode responsivity and possible noise sources resulting from the photodiode and preamplifier. Responsivity and noise limitations are experimentally verified and used to predict photodiode-preamplifier sensitivity under a wide range of operating conditions. Results demonstrate that the DC mode offers advantages in sensitivity and reduced mechanical complexity for facsimile cameras over the more common technique of chopping the radiation and ac amplifying the resultant signal.

Power supply for carbon dioxide lasers

An improved ac power supply for a CO2 laser which eliminates the need for ballast resistors to excite a stable discharge is disclosed. The method involves the connection of an inductance in front of the rectifier. This procedure provides a nondissapative positive resistance effect for cancelling the negative differential resistance exhibited by the tube at frequencies below 2 KHz. Such an inductance setup also increases the efficiency of the system.

Infrared observations of southern RV Tauri stars.

Photometric measurements from 2.2 to 18 microns are reported for six southern RV Tauri stars. Four of the six have anomalous infrared excess radiation similar to that observed in other RV Tauri stars. The infrared spectra of IW Car, AR Pup, and SX Cen resemble that of oxygen-rich RV Tau. RU Cen is similar to AC Her.

Satellite and ground-based observations of a red arc.

Simultaneous observations carried out during the red-arc period of Aug. 8-9, 1970 at Richland, Washington and by the Ogo 6 satellite are examined in the light of the present-day theoretical knowledge. The observed formation of the arc at the electron temperature peak and density trough supports the thermal-conduction theory of red-arc formation. The lack of dc electric fields in the red-arc region rules out these fields as an excitation mechanism. Particle precipitation as a direct source of red-line emission can also be ruled out by the observations presented. The formation of the arc in the plasmapause region and the detection of low-frequency ac fields are consistent with a theory that predicts wave-particle interaction at the plasmapause as a mechanism for supplying thermal energy to the plasmasphere electrons.

Electric field and fine structure in aurora.

Simultaneous rocket measurements of electric field and optical aurora during a weak PCA event are presented. The aurora consisted of faint structures superposed on a homogeneous glow, and on-board photometers showed that the rocket passed through two discrete auroral forms. These enhanced auroral emissions coincided with variations in the dc electric field and an increase in the ac field. A detailed comparison between electric fields and optical emissions shows that the relation is quite complex. The results are compared with earlier electric field and optical auroral measurements.

Thin-film temperature sensor.

A new device has been developed for sensing small and rapid temperature changes accompanying biochemical reactions. The active element consists of an evaporated thin-film capacitor having a relatively strong temperature dependence. This dependence is derived from electron trapping effects in the thin amorphous dielectric film. A voltage output of at least 50 mV/deg can be obtained prior to amplification by using a resonant ac bridge circuit operating at 100 kHz. The corresponding noise output for a 10 kHz bandwidth can with an optimum circuit be as low as 4 microvolts. Therefore, the minimum detectable temperature change would be 80 microdegrees at 10 kHz. Rapid thermal response is assured by supporting the thin-film capacitor on a thin anodic tantalum oxide film suspended across an electrolytically etched window in a tantalum foil.

A full-wave modulator-demodulator apparatus is described including an operational amplifier having a first input terminal coupled to a circuit input terminal, and a second input terminal alternately coupled to the circuit input terminal. A circuit is ground by a switching circuit responsive to a phase reference signal and the operational amplifier is alternately switched between a non-inverting mode and an inverting mode. The switching circuit includes three field-effect transistors operatively associated to provide the desired switching function in response to an alternating reference signal of the same frequency as an AC input signal applied to the circuit input terminal.

Preparation and evaluation of thin-film sodium tungsten bronzes

Thin films of sodium tungsten bronze (NaxWO3) were investigated as reversible sodium ion electrodes for solid electrolytes. The films were made by electron beam evaporation of the three phases, W metal, Na2WO4, and WO3, followed by sintering. The substrates were sodium beta alumina disks and glass slides. X-ray diffraction analyses of the films showed that sintering in dry nitrogen with prior exposure to air lead to mixed phases. Sintering in vacuum with no air exposure produced tetragonal I bronze with a nominal composition of Na0.31WO3, single phase within the limits of X-ray diffraction detectability. The films were uniform and adherent on sodium beta alumina substrates. The ac and dc conductivities of the beta alumina were measured with the sodium tungsten bronze films as electrodes. These experiments indicated that the tetragonal I bronze electrodes were not completely reversible. This may have resulted from sodium ion blocking within the bronze film or at the bronze beta alumina interface. Methods for attempting to make more completely reversible electrodes are suggested.

Experimental investigation of the critical magnetic fields of transition metal superconductors

The isothermal magnetic transitions of a type 2 superconductor have been studied by AC susceptibility techniques as a function of the amplitude and frequency of the exciting field. The field variation of the complex susceptibility was used to determine the critical fields. The research was planned to clarify the determination (both experimentally and theoretically) of the maximum field at which the superconductive phase spontaneously nucleates in the bulk and on the surface of the metal.
