Rare-gas effects on metabolism and inert gas narcosis

The detailed examination is reported of the theory that narcosis results from expansion of the cell membrane under high partial pressures. The research is partially based on the hypothesis that, like oxygen toxicity, the mechanism of metabolic effects of rare gases may be similar at both low and high pressures and are simply more observable at high pressures. Using adult female goats, the parameters measured include oxygen consumption, CO2 production, respiration rate, heart rate, rectal and skin temperatures and the analysis of electroencephalograms and evoked response. Additionally, the specific activity is measured of plasma glucose subsequent to injection of glucose-UL-C-14, intravenous infusion, specific activity of expired CO2, unesterified fatty acid levels and whole blood lactate-to-pyruvate ratios. Also studied were the effects of acetylsalicylic acid, vitamin E and cationic detergents (which alleviate narcosis) upon metabolic changes induced by high pressure narcosis.

Mission design for a ballistic slow-flyby of comet Encke 1980

Preliminary mission analyses for a proposed 1980 slow flyby (7 to 9 km/sec) of comet Encke are presented. Among the topics covered are: science objectives, Encke's physical activity and ephemeris accuracy, trajectory and launch-window analysis, terminal guidance, and spacecraft concepts. The nominal mission plan calls for a near-perihelion intercept with two spacecraft using a single launch vehicle. Both spacecraft arrive at the same time, one passing within 500 km from Encke's nucleus on its sunward side, the other cutting through the tail region. By applying a small propulsive correction about three weeks after the encounter, it is possible to retarget both spacecraft for a second Encke intercept in 1984. The potential science return from the ballistic slow flyby is compared with other proposed mission modes for the 1980 Encke flyby mission including the widely advocated slow flyby using solar-electric propulsion. It is shown that the ballistic slow flyby is superior in every respect.

Measurement of 0.511-MeV gamma rays with a balloon-borne Ge/Li/ spectrometer

A collimated high-resolution gamma ray spectrometer was flown on a balloon over Palestine, Texas, on June 10, 1974, to obtain measurements of the terrestrial and extraterrestrial 0.511-MeV gamma rays. The spectrometer consists of four 40-cu-cm Ge(Li) crystals operating in the energy range 0.06-10 MeV; this cluster of detectors is surrounded by a CsI(Na) anticoincidence shield. This system is used primarily to allow measurements of the two escape peaks associated with high-energy gamma ray lines. It also allows a measurement of the background component of the 0.511-MeV flux produced by beta(+) decays in materials inside the CsI(Na) shield. It is shown that the measurements of the atmospheric fluxes are consistent with earlier results after allowance is made for an additional component of the background due to beta(+) decays produced by neutron- and proton-initiated interactions with materials in and near the detector. Results of the extraterrestrial flux require an extensive detailed analysis of the time-varying background because of activation buildup and balloon spatial drifts.

The University of Chicago cosmic ray electrons and nuclei experiment on the H spacecraft

The University of Chicago instrument on the Heliocentric spacecraft (MEH experiment) will measure the energy spectrum of cosmic electrons in the range 5-400 MeV. In addition, the energy spectra and relative abundances of nuclei from protons to the iron group, with energies ranging from 30 MeV/n to 15 GeV/n, will be determined. Primary scientific objectives involve the study of the long and short term variability of these components as a probe of the structure of the heliosphere. Particles are identified by multiparameter analysis using the pulse height analyzed signals from eight active detectors - silicon solid state, plastic and crystal scintillators are solid and gas Cerenkov counters. Data return is optimized by a three level priority logic scheme.

Radar detection of surface oil accumulations

The United States Coast Guard is developing AIREYE, an all weather, day/night airborne surveillance system, for installation aboard future medium range surveillance aircraft. As part of this program, a series of controlled tests were conducted off southern California to evaluate the oil slick detection capabilities of two Motorola developed, side looking radars. The systems, a real aperture AN/APS-94D and a synthetic aperture coherent on receive (COR) were flown over the Santa Barbara Channel on May 19, 1976. Targets imaged during the coincident overflights included natural oil seepage, simulated oil spills, oil production platforms, piers, mooring buoys, commercial boats and barges at other targets. Based on an analysis of imagery from the coincident radar runs, COR provides better detection of natural and man made oil slicks, whereas the AN/APS-94D consistently exhibited higher surface target detection results. This and other tests have shown that active microwave systems have considerable potential for aiding in the detection and analysis of surface oil accumulations.

EVs@Scale Next-Gen Profiles - Fleet Utilization 2024

As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s EVs@Scale initiative, the Next-Gen Profiles (NGP) project provides a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of electric vehicle (EV) and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) operations across real-world fleet deployments. This paper presents findings from the NGP’s Fleet Utilization study, which investigates operational behavior and asset usage across seventeen EV fleets and two EVSE fleets, encompassing a wide range of vehicle types and use cases. Data collected from diverse sources—varying in format and temporal resolution—are first reformatted into a unified structure. From this harmonized dataset, a suite of rigorously defined performance metrics is calculated at an hourly cadence, enabling consistent cross-comparison of charging, routing, and other key operational behaviors. Amid rapidly increasing EV adoption and growing demands for energy-efficient fleet operations, the analysis reveals clear utilization trends—including diurnal and weekly activity cycles, differences in short versus long charging session dependencies, and route-specific energy usage patterns. These findings highlight the need for tailored infrastructure strategies and the deployment of advanced energy management systems, such as Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS) and Site Energy Management Systems (SEMS), which can optimize charging schedules and mitigate peak loads. By leveraging anonymized, harmonized datasets and standardized metrics, this study offers critical insights into fleet behavior and performance, providing a foundation to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and enable the scalable deployment of electrified transportation.

First Sterile Neutrino Search at NOvA Experiment Using both Neutrino and Anti-Neutrino Data

Neutrinos are among the most abundant fundamental particles in the universe, and yet they are so elusive that they pass through almost everything without leaving a trace. For decades, researchers have measured neutrino oscillations in great detail, refining our understanding of the theories. Yet, once again, neutrino shows their incredibly surprising nature through some recent experimental results, suggesting that our current understanding might be incomplete. Several experiments have observed an unexpected difference in the observed neutrino behaviour from what the Standard Model predicts, showing an excess in some cases (e.g. LSND, MiniBooNE) and a deficit of neutrino events in others (e.g. SAGE, GALLEX). These anomalies challenge our conventional theories of standard three neutrino flavors and phenomenologically motivate the sterile neutrino hypothesis, which does not interact through the usual weak force. While some results appear consistent with this idea, others have found no supporting evidence (e.g. MicroBooNE), leaving the question unanswered. NOvA is one such long-baseline neutrino experiment with its Near Detector (ND) at Fermilab and a Far Detector (FD) at 810 km in Minnesota. It uses the NuMI beam as its primary source of neutrinos for oscillation studies. Its two-detector setup, extended baseline, and ability to conduct combined $\nu$-$\bar\nu$ analyses position it to explore these phenomena in new ways. We use the joint $\nu_{\mu}$ and neutral current (NC) disappearance channels to probe active-sterile mixing in the 3+1 model. This analysis utilizes a data sample of 27$\times$10$^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in neutrino mode and 12.5$\times$10$^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in antineutrino mode. We found no evidence of sterile neutrino at 90$\%$ C.L. We present the limits in $\sin^{2}\theta_{24}$ vs $\Delta m^{2}_{41}$, $\sin^{2}\theta_{34}$ vs $\Delta m^{2}_{41}$, and $\sin^{2}2\theta_{\mu\tau}$ vs $\Delta m^{2}_{41}$ parameter spaces. The limits provided by this analysis are world leading in most of the parameter spaces.

Blockchain Research and Development Activities Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and Utility Sector

This article provides an in-depth analysis of blockchain research in the energy sector, focusing on projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and comparing them with industry-funded initiatives. A total of 110 funded activities within the U.S. power industry were successfully tracked and mapped into a newly developed categorization framework. This framework is designed to help research agencies to systematically understand their funded portfolio. Such characterization is expected to help them make effective investments, identify research gaps, measure impact, and advance technological progress to meet national goals. In line with this need, the proposed framework proposes a 2-D categorization matrix to systematically classify blockchain efforts within the energy sector.Under the proposed framework, the Energy System Domain serves as the primary classification dimension, categorizing use cases into 30 distinct applications. The second dimension, Blockchain Properties, captures the specific needs and functionalities provided by Blockchain technology. The aim was to capture blockchain’s applicability and functionality: where and why blockchain? Principles behind the selection of the viewpoint dimensions were carefully defined based on consensus obtained through the Blockchain for Optimized Security and Energy Management (BLOSEM) project. The mapped results show that activities within the Grid Automation, Coordination, and Control (31.8%), Marketplaces and Trading (25.5%), Foundational Blockchain Research (19.1%), and Supply Chain Management (17.3%) domains have been actively pursued to date. The three leading specific use case applications were identified as Transactive Energy Management for Marketplaces and Trading, Asset Management for Supply Chain Management, and Fundamental Blockchain for Foundational Blockchain Research. The Marketplaces and Trading and Retail Services Enablement domains stood out as being favored by industry by a factor greater than 2 (2.3 and 2.6, respectively), yet there seemed to be little to zero investment from DOE. Approximately 76% of the total projects prioritized Immutability, Identity Management, and Decentralization and/or Disintermediation compared to Asset Digitization and/or Tokenization, Automation, and Privacy and/or Anonymity. The greatest discrepancies between DOE and industry were in Asset Digitization and/or Tokenization and Automation. The industry efforts (36% in Asset Digitization/Tokenization and 22% in Automation) was 14 times and 2.4 times, respectively, more intensive than the DOE-sponsored efforts, indicating a significant discrepancy in industry versus government priorities. Overall, quantifying DOE-sponsored projects and industry activities through mapping provides clarity on portfolio investments and opportunities for future research.

Aerodynamic preliminary analysis system 2. Part 1: Theory

A subsonic/supersonic/hypersonic aerodynamic analysis was developed by integrating the Aerodynamic Preliminary Analysis System (APAS), and the inviscid force calculation modules of the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program. APAS analysis was extended for nonlinear vortex forces using a generalization of the Polhamus analogy. The interactive system provides appropriate aerodynamic models for a single input geometry data base and has a run/output format similar to a wind tunnel test program. The user's manual was organized to cover the principle system activities of a typical application, geometric input/editing, aerodynamic evaluation, and post analysis review/display. Sample sessions are included to illustrate the specific task involved and are followed by a comprehensive command/subcommand dictionary used to operate the system.
