Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 and [Sr 3 Se 2 ][(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 ] Tunable Direct Band Gap Semiconductors

Abstract Synthesizing solids in molten fluxes enables the rapid diffusion of soluble species at temperatures lower than in solid‐state reactions, leading to crystal formation of kinetically stable compounds. In this study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of mixed hydroxide and halide fluxes in synthesizing complex Sr/Ag/Se in mixed LiOH/LiCl. We have accessed a series of two‐dimensional Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 layered phases. With increased LiOH/LiCl ratio or reaction temperature, Li partially substituted Ag to form solid solutions of Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 with x up to 0.45. In addition, a new type of intergrowth compound [Sr 3 Se 2 ][(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 ] was synthesized upon further reaction of Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 with SrSe. Both Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 and [Sr 3 Se 2 ][(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 ] exhibit a direct band gap, which increases with increasing Li substitution ( x ). Therefore, the band gap of Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 can be precisely tuned via fine‐tuning x that is controlled by only the flux ratio and temperature.

Electrochemically tunable proton-coupled electron transfer in Pd-catalyzed benzaldehyde hydrogenation

Acid-functionalization of carbon support allows enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of Pd to hydrogenate benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol in proportion to the concentration of Brønsted acid sites. The hydrogenation rate is not enhanced when H2 is used. The rate enhancement is attributed to differences in the hydrogenation mechanism between the electrochemical and the H2 induced hydrogenations, in particular to the participation of hydronium ions formed at Brønsted acid sites at the perimeter of metal particles in proton coupled electron transfer.

Thermally activated adsorption in metal–organic frameworks with a temperature–tunable diffusion barrier layer

Modification of the external surfaces of metal organic frameworks offers a new level of control over their adsorption behavior. Here, we have previously shown that capping of MOFs with ethylenediamine (EDA) can effectively retain small gaseous molecules at room temperature. Here, we report a temperature–induced variation in the capping–layer gate opening mechanism through a combination of in situ IR experiments and ab initio simulations of the capping layer. We find an atypical acceleration and increase in the loading of weakly adsorbed molecules upon raising the temperature above room temperature. Our findings show the discovery of a novel temperature–dependent kinetics that goes beyond standard kinetics and suggest a new avenue for tailoring selective adsorption by thermally tuning the surface barrier.

Tunable CHA/AEI Zeolite Intergrowths with A Priori Biselective Organic Structure‐Directing Agents: Controlling Enrichment and Implications for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx

Abstract A novel ab initio methodology based on high‐throughput simulations has permitted designing unique biselective organic structure‐directing agents (OSDAs) that allow the efficient synthesis of CHA/AEI zeolite intergrowth materials with controlled phase compositions. Distinctive local crystallographic ordering of the CHA/AEI intergrowths was revealed at the nanoscale level using integrated differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (iDPC STEM). These novel CHA/AEI materials have been tested for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx, presenting an outstanding catalytic performance and hydrothermal stability, even surpassing the performance of the well‐established commercial CHA‐type catalyst. This methodology opens the possibility for synthetizing new zeolite intergrowths with more complex structures and unique catalytic properties.

Trifluoromethylation of 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenides: A Mild Functionalization and Tunable p‐Type Doping Method

Chemical modification is a powerful strategy for tuning the electronic properties of 2D semiconductors. Here, in this study, we report the electrophilic trifluoromethylation of 2D WSe2 and MoS 2 under mild conditions using the reagent trifluoromethyl thianthrenium triflate (TTT). Chemical characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that the trifluoromethyl groups bind covalently to surface chalcogen atoms as well as oxygen substitution sites. Trifluoromethylation induces p-type doping in the underlying 2D material, enabling the modulation of charge transport and optical emission properties in WSe 2 . This work introduces a versatile and efficient method for tailoring the optical and electronic properties of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides.

Repurposing Post-Consumer Polyethylene to Access Cross-Linked Polyethylene with Reprocessabilty, Recyclability, and Tunable Properties

Polyethylene (PE) is the most widely produced plastic but accumulation and resistance to degradation has significantly contributed to the plastic waste crisis. Upcycling has presented promising solutions to transform PE waste into value-added products. In this study, mixed post-consumer PE was successfully repurposed into reprocessable and chemically recyclable cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). This process involved converting PE into telechelic oligomers, followed by repolymerization using a hybrid cross-linking system consisting of a dynamic cross-linker 2,4,6-triethoxy-1,3,5-triazine (TETA) and non-dynamic cross-linker tris(6-isocyanatohexyl)isocyanurate (Tri-HDI). In the resulting XLPE, TETA facilitated iterative reprocessing with minimal property degradation across cycles, whereas Tri-HDI helped preserve functional performance throughout service life. Compared to PE, XLPE exhibited enhanced mechanical properties, reduced creep deformation under application-relevant temperatures, and high temperature structural stability. Notably, copolymerizing PE oligomers with commercial macrodiols was employed to create composite XLPEs, enabling tuning material properties. After use, XLPE can be efficiently and selectively depolymerized under mild conditions, even when mixed with commercial insulator cables. This depolymerization allows for the recovery of the constituent building blocks, enabling purification and subsequent repolymerization for reuse. This approach demonstrates the potential of repurposing plastic waste into sustainable materials and fostering the development of a circular economy.

Investigation of porous polydimethylsiloxane structures with tunable properties induced by the phase separation technique

This article reports the fabrication and characterization of porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) structures developed by the solvent evaporationinduced phase separation technique. Here, ternary systems containing water/ tetrahydrofuran (THF)/PDMS with various concentrations are produced to form a stable solution. The porous PDMS structures are formed by removing the solvent (THF) and nonsolvent (water) phases during the stepping heat treatment procedure. The analytical ternary phase diagram is constructed based on the thermodynamic equilibrium state in the polymer solution to explain the stable/unstable formulations and the possible composition change path. The results show that the isolated pores with the adjustable pore size ranging from 330 to 1900 μm are obtained by tuning the water to the THF ratio. The mechanical properties of the porous PDMS structures are determined by conducting the tensile tests on the prepared dog bone-shaped specimens. A wide range of elastic modulus ranging between 0.49 and 1.05 MPa was achieved without affecting the density of the porous sample by adjusting the solvent and non-solvent content in the solution. It is shown that the flexibility of the porous structures can be improved by reducing the ratio of water to THF and decreasing the PDMS content. The porosity measurements reveal that the PDMS concentration is the major phase controlling the porosity of the structure, while the effect of water/THF is negligible.

Electrochemical Flow Reactor Design Allows Tunable Mass Transport Conditions for Operando Surface Enhanced Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract In situ attenuated total reflection surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR‐SEIRAS) is often used to investigate the near‐surface electrocatalytic reaction environment. However, there is a gap in directly correlating the near‐surface reaction environment with electrocatalytic reaction rates. To that end, we designed an electrochemical flow reactor for operando electrochemical ATR‐SEIRAS and demonstrate its capability with the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Roughened gold catalyst thin films are prepared on ATR silicon crystals as a model system to probe local species under CO 2 RR conditions in 0.1 M KHCO 3 . We measured changes in the interfacial CO 2 concentration as a function of applied potential and electrolyte flow rate in operando , allowing us to correlate the changes in reaction rates with the observed CO 2 concentration. Including the choice of the catalyst and electrolyte, coupling hydrodynamic control with ATR‐SEIRAS in this platform enables investigations of how the local microenvironment affects the activity and selectivity of electrochemical reactions.

Probing the Behavior of Composition‐Tunable Ultrathin PtNi Nanowires for CO Oxidation and Small‐Molecule Electrocatalytic Reactions

We have successfully synthesized ultrathin nanowires of pure Pt, Pt 99 Ni 1 , Pt 9 Ni 1 , and Pt 7 Ni 3 using a modified room-temperature soft-template method. Analysis of both methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) results found that the Pt 7 Ni 3 samples yielded the best performance with specific activities of 0.36 and 0.34 mA/cm 2 respectively. Additionally, formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) tests noted that both Pt and PtNi nanowires oxidize small organic molecules (SOMs) via an indirect pathway. CO oxidation data suggests little measurable performance without any pre-reduction treatment; however, after annealing in H 2 , we detected significantly improved CO 2 formation for both Pt 9 Ni 1 and Pt 7 Ni 3 motifs. These observations highlight the importance of pre-treating these nanowires under a reducing atmosphere to enhance their performance for CO oxidation. To explain these findings, we collected extended x-ray adsorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy data, consistent with the presence of partial alloying with a tendency for Pt and Ni to segregate, thereby implying the formation of a Pt-rich shell coupled with a Ni-rich core. Here, we also observed that the degree of alloying within the nanowires increased after annealing in a reducing atmosphere, a finding deduced through analysis of the coordination numbers and calculations of Cowley's short range order parameters.

Tunable Photocatalytic Production of Syngas Using Co@C 3 N 4 and Black Phosphorus

Photocatalytic syngas production is an attractive option to efficiently generate a feedstock for the Fischer-Tropsch processes that can produce liquid fuels and other chemicals. Here, one-pot photocatalytic production of syngas (H 2 +CO) with specific and controllable ratios of H 2 /CO has proven to be a significant challenge to date. In this work, single Co 2+ sites loaded onto carbon nitride (Co@C 3 N 4 ) is combined with black phosphorus (BP) to form a hybrid material, which is capable of simultaneous photocatalytic evolution of H 2 and CO. H 2 /CO syngas ratios can be controlled in the range from 0.30 to 5.16 by changing the % weight of BP in this system or by the addition of CoCl 2 in the reaction solution. Maximum total gas evolution of 70 μmol g –1 h –1 was achieved with 20 wt % BP (BP 20% /Co@C 3 N 4 ) at a H 2 /CO ratio of 2.

Role of tunable polymer flexibility in controlling wetting behavior and thermal properties of poly(1,3-cyclohexadiene)-silica nanocomposites

We present how altering the chain flexibility affects the nanoscale organization of polymer-grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs) and its ultimate impact on macroscale thermal properties. To isolate the role of chain flexibility on wetting behavior in athermal polymer nanocomposites (PNC), the graft and matrix chemistry is kept identical by utilizing 1,3-cyclohexadiene-based polymer materials. Increasing the rigidity and molecular weight of both the graft and matrix is found to favor mixing of poly(1,3-cyclohexadiene) PCHD-grafted silica NPs with the matrix, supported by a concomitant increase in glass transition temperatures of the PNCs. Further, the associated entropic factors that drive wetting behavior and dispersion of PGNPs are discussed, emphasizing the dominant role-played by chain flexibility. Alterations in graft flexibility had the strongest impact on dispersion and Tg values of the PNC, while molecular weight (MW) plays a secondary role. This investigation is a unique demonstration of how chain flexibility alteration in athermal semiflexible systems can be used to alter NP organization by altering filler-matrix wettability which also impacts thermal properties.

Tunable Metal–Organic Frameworks Based on 8-Connected Metal Trimers for High Ethane Uptake

Metal trimers [M 3 (O/OH)](OOCR) 6 are among the most important structural building blocks. From these trimers, a great success has been achieved in the design of 6- or 9-connected framework materials with various topological features and outstanding gas-sorption properties. In comparison, 8-connected trimer-based MOFs are rare. Given multiple competitive pathways for the formation of 6- or 9-connected frameworks, it remains challenging to identify synthetic or structural parameters that can be used to direct self-assembly process towards trimer-based 8-connected materials. Here, we reveal a viable strategy called angle bending modulation for creating a prototypical MOF type based on 8-connected M 3 (OH)(OOCR) 5 (Py-R) 3 trimers, M = Zn, Co, Fe). As a proof of concept, we synthesized six members in this family using three types of ligands (CPM-80, -81, and -82). These materials do not possess open-metal sites and show excellent uptake capacity for various hydrocarbon gas molecules and inverse C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity. CPM-81-Co, made from 2,5-furandicarboxylate and isonicotinate, features selectivity of 1.80 with high uptake capacity for ethane (123 cm 3 /g -1 ) and ethylene (113 cm 3 /g -1 ) at 298 K and 1 bar.

Electrolysis on a Chip with Tunable Thin Film Nanostructured PGM Electrocatalysts Generated from Self-Assembled Block Copolymer Templates

Self-assembled block copolymers are promising templates for fabricating thin film materials with tuned periodic feature sizes and geometry at the nanoscale. Here, a series of nanostructured platinum and iridium oxide electrocatalysts templated from poly(styrene)-block-poly(vinyl pyridine) (PSbPVP) block copolymers via an incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) pathway is reported. Both nanowire and nanocylinder electrocatalysts of varying feature sizes are assessed and higher catalyst loadings are achieved by the alkylation of the pyridine moieties in the PVP block prior to IWI. Electrocatalyst evaluations featuring hydrogen pump and water electrolysis demonstrations are carried out on interdigitated electrode (IDE) chips flexible with liquid supporting electrolytes and thin film polymer electrolytes. Notably, the mass activities of the nanostructured electrocatalysts from alkylated block copolymer templates are 35%–94% higher than electrocatalysts from non-alkylated block copolymer templates. Standing cylinder nanostructures lead to higher mass activities than lamellar variants despite their not having the largest surface area per unit catalyst loading demonstrating that mesostructure architectures have a profound impact on reactivity. Overall, IDE chips with model thin film electrocatalysts prepared from self-assembled block copolymers offer a high-throughput experimental method for correlating electrocatalyst nanostructure and composition to electrochemical reactivity.

Low‐Loss Tunable Infrared Plasmons in the High‐Mobility Perovskite (Ba,La)SnO 3

Abstract BaSnO 3 exhibits the highest carrier mobility among perovskite oxides, making it ideal for oxide electronics. Collective charge carrier oscillations known as plasmons are expected to arise in this material, thus providing a tool to control the nanoscale optical field for optoelectronics applications. Here, the existence of relatively long‐lived plasmons supported by high‐mobility charge carriers in La‐doped BaSnO 3 (BLSO) is demonstrated. By exploiting the high spatial and energy resolution of electron energy‐loss spectroscopy with a focused beam in a scanning transmission electron microscope, the dispersion, confinement ratio, and damping of infrared localized surface plasmons (LSPs) in BLSO nanoparticles are systematically investigated. It is found that LSPs in BLSO exhibit a high degree of spatial confinement compared to those sustained by noble metals and have relatively low losses and high quality factors with respect to other doped oxides. Further analysis clarifies the relation between plasmon damping and carrier mobility in BLSO. The results support the use of nanostructured degenerate semiconductors for plasmonic applications in the infrared region and establish a solid alternative to more traditional plasmonic materials.

Hourglass–Shaped Nanocages with Concaved Structures Based on Selective Self–Complementary Coordination Ligands and Tunable Hierarchical Self–Assembly

Three-dimensional (3D) structures constructed via coordination-driven self-assemblies have recently garnered increasing attention due to the challenges in structural design and potential applications. In particular, developing new strategy for the convenient and precise self-assemblies of 3D supramolecular structures is of utmost interest. Introducing the concept of self-coordination ligands, herein the design and synthesis of two meta-modified terpyridyl ligands with selective self-complementary coordination moiety are reported and their capability to assemble into two hourglass-shaped nanocages SA and SB is demonstrated. Within these 3D structures, the meta-modified terpyridyl unit preferably coordinates with itself to serve as concave part. By changing the arm length of the ligands, hexamer (SA) and tetramer (SB) are obtained respectively. In-depth studies on the assembly mechanism of SA and SB indicate that the dimers could be formed first via self-complementary coordination and play crucial roles in controlling the final structures. Moreover, both SA and SB can go through hierarchical self-assemblies in solution as well as on solid–liquid interface, which are characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). As a result, it is further demonstrated that various higher-order assembly structures can be achieved by tuning the environmental conditions.
