Dynamic Phasor Modeling of Various Multipulse Rectifiers and a VSI Fed by 18-Pulse Asymmetrical Autotransformer Rectifier Unit for Fast Transient Analysis
To study the fast modelling of dynamic characteristics caused by power electronic switching, the dynamic phasor (DP) theory based on the time-varying Fourier decomposition and frequency shifting is firstly applied to the modelling of various multipulse rectifiers. The DP model for symmetrical 12-pulse phase-shifting reactor rectifier unit (PSR-RU) is derived with model order reduction, relations between ac and dc terminals, and Taylor series expansion. The DP model of asymmetrical 18-pulse autotransformer rectifier unit (AT-RU) is proposed based on the switching functions expressed in the DP domain. Meanwhile, the DP model of voltage source inverter (VSI) fed by asymmetrical 18-pulse AT-RU is built with the harmonic state-space (HSS) equations. Under both balanced and unbalanced conditions, the good calculation accuracy and rapid simulation speed of the developed DP models are validated by the detailed time-domain (TD) simulation.

Operation of Natural Gas Pipeline Networks With Storage Under Transient Flow Conditions
Here, we formulate a nonlinear optimal control problem for intraday operation of a natural gas pipeline network that includes storage reservoirs. The dynamics of compressible gas flow through pipes, compressors, reservoirs, and wells are considered. In particular, a reservoir is modeled as a rigid, hollow container that stores gas under isothermal conditions and uniform density, and a well is modeled as a vertical pipe. For each pipe, flow dynamics are described by a coupled partial differential equation (PDE) system in density and mass flux variables, with momentum dissipation modeled using the Darcy–Wiesbach friction approximation. Compressors are modeled as scaling up the pressure of gas between the inlet and outlet. The governing equations for all network components are spatially discretized and assembled into a nonlinear differential-algebraic equation (DAE) system, which synthesizes above-ground pipeline and subsurface reservoir dynamics into a single reduced-order model. We seek to maximize an objective function that quantifies economic profit and network efficiency subject to the flow equations and inequalities that represent operating limitations. The problem is solved using a primal–dual interior point solver, and the solutions are validated in computational experiments and simulations on several pipeline test networks to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.
Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Simulation Algorithms for Evaluation of Large-Scale Extreme Fast Charging Systems (T&D Models)
Simulation of high-fidelity models of extreme fast charging (XFC) systems and large-area power grids with many XFCs can be time consuming in traditional simulators. Traditional simulators use a single method of discretization for all the components that results in imposing a large computational burden of inverting a large matrix as well as increased computations related to single method of discretization (that is typically a trapezoidal method). To overcome the problem of simulating large-area power grids with many XFCs, in this paper, advanced numerical simulation algorithms are applied for the first time together to reduce the dimension of matrix inversion. Here, the algorithms include numerical stiffness-based segregation, time constant-based segregation, clustering and aggregation on differential algebraic equations (DAEs), and multi-order integration approaches. These algorithms apply multiple discretization algorithms rather than a single discretization algorithm that further reduces the computational burden. The approaches mentioned here have resulted in speed-up of up to 18x in the simulation of a single distribution system with 15 XFCs and of up to 271x in the simulation of a transmission-distribution system with 300 XFCs in multiple distribution feeders with respect to conventional simulators (like power systems computer aided design [PSCAD]).

This report discusses the methodology and results of various types of analyses performed with reservoir pressure and injection rate data data, with the primary objective of characterizing the in-situ permeability of the formation of interest (i.e., reservoir undergoing injection and/or production).
Analysis of Transient Pressure and Rate Data in a Complex of Enhanced Oil Recovery Fields in Northern Michigan
The Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP) was founded in 2003 as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership initiative. Since its founding, MRCSP has made significant strides toward making CCUS a viable option for states in the region. The public/private consortium, funded through the DOE Regional Carbon Sequestration Initiative, brings together nearly 40 industry partners and 10 states. Battelle, as the project lead, oversees research, development and operations and coordinates activities among the partners. The incremental, phased approach has built a valuable knowledge base for the industry and paved the way for commercial-scale adoption of CCUS technologies. From 2008 to 2020, MRCSP Phase III focused on the development of large-scale injection projects. This report is part of a series of reports prepared under the Midwestern Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP) Phase III (Development Phase). These reports summarize and detail the findings of the work conducted under the Phase III project. A key activity of the MRCSP monitoring program was to continuously monitor the CO 2 injection and bottom-hole reservoir pressure in the injection wells and selected monitoring wells in the study reefs from 2013 through 2019. During the monitoring period, which varied from reef to reef, the reefs were undergoing one or more phases of development, such as CO 2 injection without hydrocarbon production, CO 2 injection with production Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), production without CO 2 injection, and idle (no injection or production) in pressure depleted condition. A multi-year record of reservoir pressure and injection rate data are available for one or more wells for each reef for analysis. This report discusses the methodology and results of various types of analyses performed with this data, with the primary objective of characterizing the in-situ permeability of the formation of interest.
PacWave Grid Integration Study: Transient and Dynamic Conditions (Final Report)
This report describes the results of PSCAD simulations that were performed in 2020 to assess the impacts of PacWave generation on CLPUD's 12.47-kV distribution and 69-kV subtransmission systems. PacWave South (PacWave) is a wave energy test facility planned by Oregon State University. PacWave shore facilities will be located south of Seal Rock on the Oregon coast. PacWave is expected to be operational in 2022 and will connect up to 10 MW of generation to CLPUD's Seal Rock distribution feeder.
Transient Physical Modelling for the Coupling of a High Temperature Gas Reactor with Thermal Energy Storage
Improving the flexibility of nuclear reactors to meet fluctuating demand on grids with high renewable energy generation penetration is key to improving reactor economics. Economic optimization using the code HERON gives maximum profit of coupling high temperature gas reactors (HTGRs) to thermal energy storage (TES) systems in the configuration shown in Figure 1 when following the demand in Figure 3. We look to model the physics of operation for a HTGR-TES using the HYBRID library in the code Modelica.
Modelling Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Reactor Startup Transients
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has set the goal of a manned mission to Mars by the year 2030 [1] and charged the national academy of sci- ences "to identify primary technical and programmatic chal- lenges, merits, and risks for maturing space nuclear propulsion technologies of interest to a future human Mars exploration mission" [2]. One relevant technology, nuclear thermal propul- sion (NTP), has notable advantages over traditional chemical rockets; most important among them is the ability to produce larger specific impulse on the order of 900s. The reduction of mission time is crucial for a manned mission to Mars to reduce the risk for the crew. Due to its higher specific impulse, NTP satisfies this need and is pursued as one technology to get humans to Mars [3, 4]. The construction of an NTP sys- tem has to negotiate several challenges laid out in Ref. [2]; one of these challenges is the need to startup the NTP sys- tem from essentially cold conditions to full power within one minute. This paper focuses on studying the neutronics and thermal-hydraulics behavior of a simplified NTP model dur- ing prescribed reactivity insertions and mass flow rate (MFR) ramps. It is the goal of this paper to investigate startup, peak material temperatures, and average specific impulse for a low enriched Uranium (LEU), ceramic and metal material (CER- MET) NTP system when varying reactivity insertion and MFR ramps.
