On a possible method for daily adjustment of severe storm radar criteria

A method is proposed of adjusting the radar criteria for severe storms, taking into account the height of the minus 22 C isotherm, the minimum value of the maximum magnitude of the radar reflectivity in thunderstorms at the same level for a specific region, and the various types of homogeneous air masses in the air. Formulas for the criteria are presented which take into account specified errors of discrimination.

Environmental aspects of run-off and siltation in the Anacostia basin from hyperaltitude photographs

The effects of urbanization and highway construction on run-off, erosion and siltation on the Anacostia watershed was analyzed. The analysis was based on changes in land use patterns demonstrated by aerial photographs, geologic and hydrologic data. Subwatersheds were studied in terms of three hypothetical storms of different magnitudes. An approximately 10 percent increase in impervious surface can cause a 12 percent increase in peak discharge for storms of the magnitude of tropical storm Agnes, a 20 percent increase for a 10 hour storm and a 150 percent increase for a thunderstorm. The early discharge from a storm of Agnes' magnitude can be increased by 100 percent. Corresponding effects were observed in soil erosion and siltation from bare construction sites. These effects are interrelated with sewage, oil, and chemical pollution and inadequate public transportation. The net result is steady degradation of the local environment, the estuary and the bay.

Characteristics of anvil-top associated with the Poplar Bluff tornado of 7 May 1973

Investigation of potential tornado-producing thunderstorms was performed during part of the 1972 and 1973 tornado seasons. On May 7, 1973 twenty-one tornadoes were confirmed over southern Missouri, northern Arkansas, and southwestern Illinois. The region was surveyed by high altitude photography performed on a Learjet over the region of reported tornadoes. Two storms were chosen from aircraft observation with the guidance of ground and radar reports, and a series of photographs were taken of a tornado producing cloud. An analysis of the activity before and during the tornado is made, and most noteworthy were changes detected in the growth and collapse of overshooting domes above the anvil. Suggestions are included for a comprehensive study.

New capabilities for the Wallops Island SPANDAR

Systems incorporated into the SPANDAR to increase spatial resolution and data processing capabilities are described. They include a minicomputer that performs real-time formatting of video data, rapid antenna scan control, and control of a digital integrator; a frequency diversity technique for faster accumulation of independent video samples; the on-line calibration system for insertion of high and low calibration signals during every PRF interval; and utilization of a large capacity, high speed computer. The resultant data will be used to create statistical thunderstorm models for designing microwave communications systems.

E.l.f./v.l.f. emissions observed on Ariel 4

The Ariel 4 satellite was designed to study wave-particle phenomena in the magnetosphere by measuring the electromagnetic wave fields over a wide frequency range and the fluxes and pitch angle distributions of energetic particles. We describe here the results of a preliminary study of the various v.l.f./e.l.f. electromagnetic wave phenomena which are observed. These include man-made signals from v.l.f. transmitters, impulsive noise originating in thunderstorms and emissions arising from magnetospheric energetic charged particles.

Airship stresses due to vertical velocity gradients and atmospheric turbulence

Munk's potential flow method is used to calculate the resultant moment experienced by an ellipsoidal airship. This method is first used to calculate the moment arising from basic maneuvers considered by early designers, and then expended to calculate the moment arising from vertical velocity gradients and atmospheric turbulence. This resultant moment must be neutralized by the transverse force of the fins. The results show that vertical velocity gradients at a height of 6000 feet in thunderstorms produce a resultant moment approximately three to four times greater than the moment produced in still air by realistic values of pitch angle or steady turning. Realistic values of atmospheric turbulence produce a moment which is significantly less than the moment produced by maneuvers in still air.

Conceptual design of an airborne laser Doppler velocimeter system for studying wind fields associated with severe local storms

An airborne laser Doppler velocimeter was evaluated for diagnostics of the wind field associated with an isolated severe thunderstorm. Two scanning configurations were identified, one a long-range (out to 10-20 km) roughly horizontal plane mode intended to allow probing of the velocity field around the storm at the higher altitudes (4-10 km). The other is a shorter range (out to 1-3 km) mode in which a vertical or horizontal plane is scanned for velocity (and possibly turbulence), and is intended for diagnostics of the lower altitude region below the storm and in the out-flow region. It was concluded that aircraft flight velocities are high enough and severe storm lifetimes are long enough that a single airborne Doppler system, operating at a range of less than about 20 km, can view the storm area from two or more different aspects before the storm characteristics change appreciably.

The structure of lightning flashes HF-UHF: 12 September 1975, Atlanta, Georgia

Simultaneous measurement of sferics at 3, 30, 139, and 295 MHz were made during thunderstorms. Wideband electronics and an analogue tape recorder continuously recorded the radiation from lightning with about 300 kHz of bandwidth. The data were obtained during the passage of a cold front. Flashing rate, burst rate and the structure of individual flashes were recorded. The record of a typical flash begins with a sudden burst of closely spaced pulses whose temporal structure is typical of the stepped leader, and ends in a large pulse suggestive of a first return stroke. The remainder of the flash consists of a sequence of pulses of varying amplitude separated by quiet periods of the order of milliseconds. The shape of these pulses and the temporal structure suggest that the first few large pulses are return strokes. Other discharges begin with widely spaced discrete pulses and resemble the preceding discharge less the leader and return stroke phase. The radiation exhibits a similar structure, at each of the frequencies monitored.

Sasaki's variational optimization analysis of temperature and moisture advection in a severe storm environment

Temperature and moisture advection patterns of dry air intrusion were analyzed by a variational optimization method to relate mesoscale advection to a severe thunderstorm environment. The analysis results presented here were obtained from a case study, May 26, 1973, when a tornado squall line developed in Oklahoma in conjunction with a clearly delineated dry air intrusion. Observations from the synoptic upper air network were used for inputs of horizontal wind components, potential temperature, and mixing ratio at each 50 mb increment from 950 to 100 mb. An objective analysis was performed to assign values of the variables to grid points of a 15 x 14 horizontal grid with approximate 125 km grid spacing at each pressure level. After the analysis the data fields were smoothed using a variational formalism.

Electrostatic field changes produced by Florida lightning

The electrical behavior of thunderstorms triggered by local heating and sea-breeze convergence, a low pressure disturbance, and a weak frontal passage has been studied at the NASA Kennedy Space Center, Florida. A nonlinear least-squares minimization procedure has been developed to describe changes in the total electrostatic field produced by lightning in terms of point charge models for the cloud charge distributions. The results indicate that discharges to ground usually neutralize cloud charges in the range from -10 to -40 C. The computed charge altitudes for Florida are somewhat higher than for other geographical locations, 6 to 9.5 km, but the corresponding ambient air temperatures, -10 to -34 C, are similar. A large fraction of the discharges to ground show total field changes which are small or even reversed in polarity within 3 km of the discharges. It is suggested that ground discharges often neutralize a small positive charge, 0.5 to 4 C at altitudes of 1 to 3 km, in addition to the larger negative charge higher in the cloud.

Research instrumentation for tornado electromagnetics emissions detection

Instrumentation for receiving, processing, and recording HF/VHF electromagnetic emissions from severe weather activity is described. Both airborne and ground-based instrumentation units are described on system and subsystem levels. Design considerations, design decisions, and the rationale behind the decisions are given. Performance characteristics are summarized and recommendations for improvements are given. The objectives, procedures, and test results of the following are presented: (1) airborne flight test in the Midwest U.S.A. (Spring 1975) and at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida (Summer 1975); (2) ground-based data collected in North Georgia (Summer/Fall 1975); and (3) airborne flight test in the Midwest (late Spring 1976) and at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida (Summer 1976). The Midwest tests concentrated on severe weather with tornadic activity; the Florida and Georgia tests monitored air mass convective thunderstorm characteristics. Supporting ground truth data from weather radars and sferics DF nets are described.

Close-up view of 20 March 1976 tornadoes - Sinking cloud tops to suction vortices

The article describes an airborne mission using a Learjet to secure direct data on a family of tornadoes spawned by a rotating thunderstorm in the Missouri-Illinois-Indiana area in March 1976 following an unusually warm February. Weakening of the tornado following increased cloud-scale vertical motion, predicted by a model constructed by Fujita (1972), was confirmed. The aircraft inspected overshooting cloud tops, examined subsidence (holes and depressions) in anvil tops it overflew, and surveyed footprints left by the tornadoes and tornado-blown litter on the ground traversed by the disturbances. Subsidence of cloud tops in advance of violent tornadoes below was confirmed. Isolated and multiple suction vortices left their characteristic ground marks; three scales of motion: tornado cyclone, tornado, and suction vortex, are evidenced by the ground truth.

Sources of low-level wind shear around airports

Some potential sources of low-level wind shear in and around airports and their likely effects are probed and analyzed. Wind shear over flat terrain with near-homogeneous surface properties (roughness, specific heat), the turning layer, shear flows over inhomogeneous terrain (airport + urban areas), thunderstorms, turbulent flowfields over bluff bodies (individual buildings), and recirculating wake flow downstream of three-dimensional block bodies are among the topics covered. Overshoot or undershoot of runways, and induced moments (pitch, roll, yaw) in takeoff and landing, and other potential hazards traceable to wind shear patterns at low heights are discussed, with emphasis on mean flow or steady-state wind shear (time-averaged, say 2-min averaged, wind fields). Wind tunnel studies and V/STOL operations are included in the study.

NASA's atmospheric variability experiments /AVE/

A series of seven mesoscale experiments were conducted under the NASA program, Atmospheric Variability Experiments (AVE). Rawinsonde, satellite, aircraft, and ground observations were recorded during specially selected meteorological periods lasting from 1 to 3 days. Details are presented for each AVE relative to observation times, experiment size and location, and significant weather. Some research results based on the use of these AVE data are referenced. These include contributions to regional numerical prediction; relations between wind shears, instability, and thunderstorm motion and development; relations between moisture and temperature and the probability of convection; retrieval of tropospheric temperature profiles from cloud-contaminated satellite data; variation of convection intensity as a result of atmospheric variability; and effects of cloud rotation on their trajectories.

The lightning environment

Basic characteristics of lightning were studied. Generation and development of the lightning flash were summarized as were lightning polarity and direction. Thunderstorm frequency and lightning flash density were considered and an engineering model of lightning flashes was delineated.

National Severe Storms Forecast Center

The principal mission of the National Severe Storms Forecast Center (NSSFC) is to maintain a continuous watch of weather developments that are capable of producing severe local storms, including tornadoes, and to prepare and issue messages designated as either Weather Outlooks or Tornado or Severe Thunderstorm Watches for dissemination to the public and aviation services. In addition to its assigned responsibility at the national level, the NSSFC is involved in a number of programs at the regional and local levels. Subsequent subsections and paragraphs describe the NSSFC, its users, inputs, outputs, interfaces, capabilities, workload, problem areas, and future plans in more detail.
