Spectra and Fabry-Perot interferometry of AG Carinae and the nebula

Observations of the variable P Cygni-type supergiant and the unique ring nebula around it were made in 1974. Line identifications are tabulated, and an estimated electron density of 1700 per cu cm is combined with a radio flux density to derive a nebular mass of 0.18 (plus or minus 0.04) solar mass on the basis of a distance of 2 kpc. From the data, some ideas of the age and kinematics of the nebula are offered, tracing the evolution of P Cygni supergiants from the youthful prototype past the nebular stage of AG Carinae into more typical, relative old age without recognizable nebular envelopes.

Coronal gas in the Galaxy. I - A new survey of interstellar O VI

Ultraviolet spectra of 40 O- and B-type stars have been intensively scanned in the vicinity of the O VI transitions at 1032 and 1038 A with the Copernicus satellite. This survey of the high-temperature (log T about 5.5) phase of interstellar gas is an extension of the earlier observations of interstellar O VI by Jenkins and Meloy (1974), bringing the total coverage up to 72 stars. Except for a few distant stars, the overall quality of the present data surpasses that of the earlier work. Plots of absorption optical depths versus radial velocity are presented for both transitions in each star. Total column densities (or their upper limits), velocity centroids, and velocity widths have been extracted from the profiles and tabulated, with the results of Jenkins and Meloy (1974) included. Qualitatively, the highly variable O VI densities and velocities seem to exhibit no systematic patterns or regional trends; there is no recognizable correlation in the behavior of coronal gas with pronounced features of galactic structure.

Investigation of several aspects of LANDSAT-4 data quality

The Thematic Mapper scene of Sacramento, CA acquired during the TDRSS test was received in TIPS format. Quadrants for both scenes were tested for band-to-band registration using reimplemented block correlation techniques. Summary statistics for band-to-band registrations of TM band combinations for Quadrant 4 of the NE Arkansas scene in TIPS format are tabulated as well as those for Quadrant 1 of the Sacramento scene. The system MTF analysis for the San Francisco scene is completed. The thermal band did not have sufficient contrast for the targets used and was not analyzed.

IUE data reduction: Wavelength determinations and line identifications using a VAX/750 computer

A fully automated, interactive system for determining the wavelengths of features in extracted IUE spectra is described. Wavelengths are recorded from video displays of expanded plots of individual orders using a movable cursor, and then corrected for IUE wavelength scale errors. The estimated accuracy of an individual wavelength in the final tabulation is 0.050 A. Such lists are ideally suited for line identification work using the method of wavelength coincidence statistics (WCS). The results of WCS studies of the ultraviolet spectra of the chemically peculiar (CP) stars iota Coronae Borealis and kappa Camcri. Aside from confirming a number of previously reported aspects of the abundance patterns in these stars, the searches produced some interesting, new discoveries, notably the presence of Hf in the spectrum of kappa Camcri. The implications of this work for theories designed to account for anomalous abundances in chemically peculiar stars are discussed.

Mobilities of polyatomic ions in gases - Core model.

A core model, consisting of a (12-4) central potential displaced from the origin, is suggested as a representation of the interaction of polyatomic ions with neutral molecules. The diffusion collision integral, which describes ion mobility, is computed and tabulated as a function of temperature and core size. The addition of the core reduces the maximum in the mobility against temperature curve, and eventually reduces the mobility below its polarization limit at all temperatures. These results are in accord with limited available experimental data. Comparison is made with other models of ion-neutral interactions.

The violet interstellar medium associated with the Carina Nebula

The interstellar spectrum of HD 93205, an 03V star in the cluster Tr16, located inside the most active part of the Great Carina Nebula was analyzed using data extracted directly from raw IUE images. From the analysis of 67 lines of 25 atoms, ions and molecules, up to six discrete absorption components spanning a maximum velocity range of approximately 375 km 5/1 were identified. The component structure for different species is tabulated and sample absorption lines, indicating at the top the positions of the six components, labelled A to F are shown. Ion column densities appropriate to each component which can be resolved in at least one line were derived by constructing empirical curves of growth and by fitting the observations with corresponding theoretical absorption line profiles. The most important results concerning each component are discussed.

GRO attitude control and determination

Design features of the attitude control and determination (ACAD) system for the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) that will eventually be launched on the Shuttle are described. A tabulation of the ACAD system components is provided and the various standby and normal pointing operational modes of the system are summarized. The system software and sensors will maintain a quaternion model of the GRO attitude on the bases of kinematic equations and inertial data. The software is standardized and has previously been used on the Solar Maximum Mission and Landsat-D. Details of the processing components, redundant electronics for sensor processing, data handling and actuator control are outlined and illustrated with block diagrams. Tests applied to validate the ACAD design are outlined, as are ground support which will be implemented once the GRO is launched.

Crustal dynamics project data analysis, 1991: VLBI geodetic results, 1979 - 1990

The Goddard VLBI group reports the results of analyzing 1412 Mark II data sets acquired from fixed and mobile observing sites through the end of 1990 and available to the Crustal Dynamics Project. Three large solutions were used to obtain Earth rotation parameters, nutation offsets, global source positions, site velocities, and baseline evolution. Site positions are tabulated on a yearly basis from 1979 through 1992. Site velocities are presented in both geocentric Cartesian coordinates and topocentric coordinates. Baseline evolution is plotted for 175 baselines. Rates are computed for earth rotation and nutation parameters. Included are 104 sources, 88 fixed stations and mobile sites, and 688 baselines.

Study of wind change for the development of loads reduction techniques for the space shuttle

Wind change statistics are analyzed for Vandenberg AFB, California (VAFB) and Kennedy Space Center, Florida (KSC). Means and standard deviations of wind component change and vector wind change modulus within 3-9 and 9-16 km altitude bands are tabulated. The contribution to 3.5 hr wind component change by wind perturbations in various wavelength bands is evaluated. Probability distributions of maximum 3.5 hr wind change in an altitude band are presented and a model for wind change at a specified altitude is tested with data derived from six data bases from VAFB and Santa Monica, California.

An ERTS multispectral scanner experiment for mapping iron compounds.

An experiment is described which is designed to produce visible-reflective infrared ratio images from ERTS satellite data. The ERTS-A multispectral scanner has two channels in the visible-reflective infrared wavelength region which should be capable of duplicating aircraft scanner results. The average reflectances in the four ERTS-A MSS spectral bands for a few minerals and some vegetation are tabulated. The mineral laboratory samples were granular, with a particle diameter range of 250 to 1200 micrometer. If there were no spectral atmospheric or illumination variation effects, the ratio of energies in band 1 to band 4 would permit discrimination of pyroxenes (found in basic and ultrabasic rocks), quartz (found in acidic rocks), limonite and hematite (iron oxides), and green vegetation, on the basis of their respective ratio magnitudes.

Experimental investigation of liquid propellant dynamics in a double cylindrical tank

Experimental data are presented for verifying the computer program for computing propellant oscillation modes and frequencies for tanks of any shape, fill level, or orientation. The experimental apparatus including the tank, support and excitation system, and instrumentation is described along with the procedures. Results showing slosh forces and moments are tabulated for different fill heights. It was found that for the vertical tank excited along the long axis, the frequencies of the higher modes are significantly higher than with the tank tilted. Little difference was noted for excitation along the short axis.

An investigation of the cratering-induced motions occurring during the formation of bowl-shaped craters

The effects of the dynamic processes which occur during crater formation were examined using small hemispherical high-explosive charges detonated in a tank which had one wall constructed of a thick piece of clear plexiglas. Crater formation and the motions of numerous tracer particles installed in the cratering medium at the medium-wall interface were viewed through the wall of this quarter-space tank and recorded with high-speed cameras. Subsequent study and analysis of particle motions and events recorded on the film provide data needed to develop a time-sequence description of the formation of a bowl-shaped crater. Tables show the dimensions of craters produced in a quarter-space tank compared with dimensions of craters produced in normal half-space tanks. Crater growth rate summaries are also tabulated.
