Validating Thermal Compensated Deposition using Computed Aided Manufacturing Software

DP Technology Corporation’s flagship product, ESPRIT, is a highly adaptable computer-aided manufacturing system that’s used across industries and continents to create nearly anything. ESPRIT is used to generate toolpath trajectories for traditional subtractive and additive manufacturing (AM) cycles. DP Technology and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have partnered together to improve the generated additive toolpath by means of API simulation. The potential impact of this research is the enhancement of toolpath planning for additive and hybrid manufacturing. Being able to simulate and compensate for various effects such as overheating, and distortion are critical components for the industrial adoption of hybrid manufacturing processes. Industrial applications include the mold & die, automotive, and aerospace industries.

Nuclear Software Validation for 7% Enriched UO 2 Fuel Lattices

This analysis performs validation for the Virtual Environment for Reaction Application’s (VERA’s) neutronics codes MPACT and Shift against measured data from the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) at Sandia National Laboratory. The benchmarking supports the future application of VERA for analysis of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel in commercial pressurized water reactors (PWRs). VERA demonstrates very good agreement with measured data, and the deterministic code MPACT also agrees very well with higher-fidelity stochastic methods KENO-VI and Shift in both total neutron flux and fission rate distribution comparisons. Despite some significant differences between the 7uPCX and existing commercial PWRs that challenge the neutron cross section data and transport solver methods used by MPACT, all of the results are excellent. The agreement increases the confidence in the applicability and accuracy of VERA for reactor analysis of HALEU fuels in commercial reactors.

Demonstrate multi-turbine simulation with hybrid-structured / unstructured-moving-grid software stack running primarily on GPUs and propose improvements for successful KPP-2

The goal of the ExaWind project is to enable predictive simulations of wind farms comprised of many megawatt-scale turbines situated in complex terrain. Predictive simulations will require computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for which the mesh resolves the geometry of the turbines, capturing the thin boundary layers, and captures the rotation and large deflections of blades. Whereas such simulations for a single turbine are arguably petascale class, multi-turbine wind farm simulations will require exascale-class resources.

M-Star® Software Test and Verification for Impeller Mixing in a Tank

Before a sample of the Slurry Mix Evaporator (SME) can be taken, the SME product sampling procedure requires that the agitator power be stable between 20 and 30 kW for at least one hour. The SME transfer to Melter Feed Tank (MFT) procedure also requires the SME agitator power be stabilized between 20 and 30 kW prior to transfer. These requirements are specified to ensure samples are homogeneous, as discussed in the Waste Form Qualification Report. During SME Batch 804, the agitator power dropped to 19 kW and struggled to achieve and maintain 20 kW. It was later discovered that the cause of the power drop was due to one of the bottom blades of the agitator breaking off. Both the sample and the transfer occurred without the power stabilizing between 20 and 30 kW. Therefore, the quality of SME Batch 804 is indeterminate, and homogeneity was questionable.

The woman behind the curious invention of modern software: Klára Dán von Neumann’s handwritten letters confirm her legacy

The year 1945 marked not only the birth of the atomic age, but also the birth of modern computer programming. The first fully electronic computing machine, the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer), came online in December 1945. But programming the ENIAC was an excruciatingly difficult task. Klára Dán von Neumann, who joined the Laboratory at Los Alamos after WWII, helped to revolutionize the process, creating the very first modern computer programs.

Operational Energy Life Cycle Data Development for the National Institute of Standards And Technology (NIST) Building Industry Reporting and Design for Sustainability (BIRDS) Neutral Environmental Software Tool (NEST)

For this analysis, regionalized life cycle assessment (LCA) results for environmental impacts (using the Tool for Reduction and Assessment of Chemicals and Other Environmental Impacts [TRACI] 2.1) and cumulative energy demand (using the Federal Life Cycle Analysis Commons Elementary Flow List [FEDEFL] Inventory Methods v1.0.0) were evaluated for the production and utilization of electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, and propane as commodities within residential and commercial buildings. These results can used as a framework for future research into net zero, high-performance buildings, such as done here for the Building Industry Reporting and Design for Sustainability (BIRDS) database by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Engineering Laboratory. The geographical results were assigned to each United States (U.S.) Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) code based on the ZIP code location and corresponding Balancing Authority Area, natural gas basin, and Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts (PADDs). Additionally, previously developed models were utilized to develop future life cycle profiles. Projections were based on data available from the U.S. Energy Information Administration Annual Energy Outlook 2022 through 2050 (AEO 2022). Electricity LCA models were updated based on AEO 2022 projected annual generation mixes, while the natural gas baseline model was updated based on projected shares of natural gas types (conventional, shale, tight, and coalbed methane). Projections of crude oil production rates and export rates were applied to the petroleum baseline model in five-year increments to investigate their effects on the life cycle profile of fuel oil and propane. While only 100-year Global Warming Potential (GWP-100) with climate carbon feedback (CC-FB) and Cumulative Energy Demand are shown in Section 4: Results, the complete results, including Acidification Potential, Eutrophication Potential, Freshwater Ecotoxicity Potential, GWP-100 without inclusion of CC-FB, Human Health Impacts Potentials (Cancer, Non-Cancer), Ozone Depletion Potential, Particulate Matter Formation Potential, and Photochemical Smog Formation Potential, are tabulated for each ZIP code in the Excel worksheets that accompany this analysis. Machine Learning Based Software Package for Reproducible Data Analysis for Electron Microscopy

Advances in hardware and computation technologies are enabling large hyperspectral imaging during Electron Microscopy (EM), resulting in datasets being produced at rapidly increasing spatial and temporal resolutions. This presents exciting opportunities for microstructure analysis, but also poses great challenges in data analysis. Under this STTR program, QuesTek Innovations LLC, a leader in the field of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME), collaborated with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory. The team developed an open-source machine learning (ML) powered tool for EM data analysis of multiple systems and data types, and collected EM data for ML model development using the cutting-edge PicoProbe equipment at Argonne National Laboratory.
