Automatic fluid separator supplies own driving power

Centrifugal separator suspended in the fuel tank of a space vehicle selects and vents gas vapor at zero gravity. Escaping vapor is used to drive an expander turbine that is magnetically coupled to the separator.

Ionene membrane battery separator

Ionic transport characteristics of ionenes, insoluble membranes from soluble polyelectrolyte compositions, are studied for possible application in a battery separator. Effectiveness of the thin film of separator membrane essentially determines battery lifetime.

Space shuttle: Effect of orbiter/booster proximity interferences on the aerodynamic characteristics of the launch configuration during separation or abort maneuvers, M equals 0.6 - 1.38

The transonic phase of the 0.0088105-scale MSC orbiter booster separation test was conducted in the LTV 4-foot high speed wind tunnel, at Mach numbers of 0.6,0.9, 1.1, and 1.38. The purpose of this test was to define the effects of the orbiter/ booster proximity interference on the aerodynamic characteristics of the launch configuration during separation or abort maneuvers. Each model had both straight and delta wings available for variation of launch vehicle configuration concepts.

Lee-side flow phenomena on space shuttle configurations at hypersonic speeds. Part 1: Flow separation and flow field viscous phenomena of a delta-wing shuttle orbiter configuration

Results of a pitot pressure investigation of the flow field on the lee side of a delta wing shuttle orbiter are presented. The results delineate the extent of the lee side separated flow and give a tentative cross sectional definition to the shock wave structure for angles of attack of 15 deg and 30 deg. It is shown that while, in general, the effects of Reynolds number on the flow field are not large, detailed effects are observed that may have significant bearing on the heating estimate. Two examples are cited for an angle of attack of 15 deg; these are: (1) The scope of the vertical tail exposed to the unseparated flow increases with increasing Reynolds number and (2) the depth of the separated flow adjacent ot where the bow wave crosses the wing appears to decrease with increasing Reynolds number. In addition, it is shown that at a spanwise station outboard of the wing-fuselage juncture, increasing Reynolds number decreased the pitot pressure in the unseparated flow. This defect of pitot pressure appears associated with the flow over the wing-fillet-fuselage juncture.

Abort separation of the shuttle

A sensitivity analysis of the factors which affect a successful abort maneuver following a space shuttle launching is presented. Wind tunnel tests were conducted using optimum simulation techniques and data acquisition procedures. Static stability, dynamic stability, and local loads were investigated. It is concluded that parallel abort separation of the space shuttle components is possible at both high and low dynamic pressures. Successful separation is dependent upon configuration, Mach number, rocket exhaust impingement and relative position and attitude of the stages.

A 15.3 GHz satellite-to-ground diversity propagation experiment using a terminal separation of 4 kilometers

The performance of a path diversity satellite-to-ground millimeter wave link with two ground terminals separated by 4 km is discussed. At this separation distance the duration of fades below 6 dB was decreased by at least a factor of 10 when using path diversity and the cumulative crosscorrelation between the attenuations observed at the two terminals during rain events was approximately 0.45. Narrow beam radiometers directed along the propagation paths were also utilized to relate the path radiometric temperature to the path attenuation. An analysis of downlink propagation data for generating diversity link performance statistics is included.

Space shuttle abort separation pressure investigation. Volume 1, Part A: Booster data at Mach 5

Pressure data obtained from a joint Langley Research Center (LaRC)/Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Space Shuttle about stage separation wind tunnel test are presented. The .00556 scale models of the McDonnell-Douglas orbiter and booster configurations were tested in proximity in Tunnel A of the Von Karman Facility (VKF), Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC). Mach numbers were 5.0, 3.0, and 2.0 and nominal Reynolds numbers were 1.09, 1.60, and 1.74 million per foot, respectively. Pressure data were obtained for the booster upper surface and orbiter lower surface at angles of attack of -10 deg, -5, 0, 5, and 10 deg for zero degrees sideslip. The models were tested at incidence angles of 0 and 5 deg for several separation distances and power conditions. Plug nozzles utilizing air were used to simulate booster and orbiter plumes at various altitudes along a nominal ascent trajectory. Powered conditions were 100, 50, and 0 percent of full power for the orbiter and 100, 50 and 0 percent of full power for the booster. Data were also obtained with the booster canard off in close proximity.

Pressure-fluctuation inputs and response of panels underlying attached and separated supersonic turbulent boundary layers

Results are presented for an investigation of surface pressure fluctuations and response of panels underlying attached and separated turbulent boundary layers and shock waves. Tests conducted at transonic and supersonic Mach numbers to 3.6 to study the pressure fields. Assorted fixed edge flat panels were tested at Mach numbers from 1.6 to 3.6 in attached and completely separated flow fields, and also in mixed flow with a step-induced shock wave oscillating on the panels. The surface pressure fluctuations are described in terms of broadband rms, spectral density, and spatial correlation information. The effectiveness of parameters for scaling the pressure fluctuations is also illustrated. Measurements of the amplitude and strain response of the panels are compared with response computations by the normal mode method of analysis.

Reproductive cell separation: A concept

Attempt has been made to separate mammalian male (Y) bearing sperm from female (X) bearing sperm. Both types of sperm are very dependent on gravity for their direction of movement. Proposed concept suggests electrophoretic force of suitable magnitude and direction may be effective means of separating X and Y sperm under zero gravity.

Separation of gas from liquid in a two-phase flow system

Separation system causes jets which leave two-phase nozzles to impinge on each other, so that liquid from jets tends to coalesce in center of combined jet streams while gas phase is forced to outer periphery. Thus, because liquid coalescence is achieved without resort to separation with solid surfaces, cycle efficiency is improved.
