Pseudosmooth tribrid inflation in SU(5)

A realistic tribrid model of sneutrino inflation is constructed in an R-symmetric SU(5) grand unified theory (GUT). To avoid the monopole problem, a pseudosmooth inflationary trajectory is generated with the help of an additional Z 5 symmetry which is broken during and after inflation. The predictions of inflationary parameters are made at the central value of the scalar spectral index, n s =0.968. The largest possible value of the tensor to scalar ratio, r ≲ 0.0027, is obtained with sub-Planckian field values (≲m P ). A successful realization of reheating and leptogenesis is achieved by avoiding the gravitino problem with a reheat temperature as low as 10 6 GeV. The predicted range of the gauge symmetry breaking scale, 5 × 10 16 ≲ M/GeV ≲ 5 × 10 17 , turns out to be somewhat larger than the typical GUT scale. Finally, with additional vector-like families, a successful gauge coupling unification is achieved by avoiding the no-go theorem related to R-symmetric SU(5) GUT.

Realistic inflation in no-scale U(1) R symmetric flipped SU(5)

We have realized non-minimal Higgs inflation and standard hybrid inflation in the supersymmetric flipped SU(5) model with U(1) R symmetry using the no-scale form of the Kähler potential. In non-minimal Higgs inflation the waterfall Higgs field plays the role of inflaton, and in standard hybrid inflation the gauge singlet field S is employed as an inflaton. The predictions of both models are in good agreement with the Planck 2018 data. For numerical calculations we have fixed the gauge symmetry breaking scale, M, around 2 × 10 16 GeV. In both models the inflaton field values are constrained below m P . The tensor to scalar ratio r in non-minimal inflation is of the order of 10 -3 and for standard hybrid inflation r is tiny, of order 10 -15 –10 -4 . The scalar spectral index in both cases lie within the Planck 1-σ bounds, and the running of the scalar spectral index lies in the range, -dn s /d ln k ~ 6 × 10 -4 for non-minimal model and 10 -9 –10 -3 for the standard hybrid model. A realistic scenario of reheating and non-thermal leptogenesis is employed with reheat temperature T r ~ 10 9 GeV for non-minimal model and 10 6 –10 10 GeV for standard hybrid model. The R-symmetry plays a vital role in forbidding rapid proton decay, but at the same time it also suppresses terms responsible for generating right handed neutrino masses. A realistic scenario of right handed neutrino masses is obtained by considering effective R symmetry breaking at the nonrenormalizable level with adequate suppression of rapid proton decay.

Robustness of inflation to kinetic inhomogeneities

We investigate the effects of large inhomogeneities in both the inflaton field and its momentum. We find that in general, large kinetic perturbations reduce the number of e-folds of inflation. In particular, we observe that inflationary models with sub-Planckian characteristic scales are not robust even to kinetic energy densities that are sub-dominant to the potential energy density, unless the initial field configuration is sufficiently far from the minimum. This strengthens the results of our previous work. In inflationary models with super-Planckian characteristic scales, despite a reduction in the number of e-folds, inflation is robust even when the potential energy density is initially sub-dominant. For the cases we study, the robustness of inflation strongly depends on whether the inflaton field is driven into the reheating phase by the inhomogeneous scalar dynamics.

Relaxation times for disoriented isospin condensates in high energy heavy ion collisions

Fluctuations between charged and neutral kaons measured by the ALICE Collaboration in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) exceed conventional explanations. Previously it was shown that if the scalar condensate is accompanied by an electrically neutral isospin-1 field then the combination can produce large equilibrium fluctuations where ⟨$\overline{𝑢}$ ⁢𝑢⟩≠⟨ $\overline{𝑑}$𝑑⟩. Hadronizing strange and antistrange quarks might then strongly fluctuate between charged ($\overline{𝑢}$⁢𝑠 or $\overline{𝑠}$⁢𝑢) and neutral (𝑑⁢$\overline{𝑠}$⁢ or 𝑠⁢$\overline{𝑑}$) kaons. Here, we estimate the times for the condensates to achieve their equilibrium probability distributions within causal volumes in high energy heavy ion collisions. This is achieved by modeling the temperature dependence of the condensates, mesonic collective excitations, decay rates of the associated fields, and employing the Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations. Within this model, we find that the equilibration times are short compared with the expansion time, making disoriented isospin condensates a viable explanation for the anomalous fluctuations observed at the LHC.

New Measure of the Dissipation Region in Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection

A new measure to identify a small-scale dissipation region in collisionless magnetic reconnection is proposed. The energy transfer from the electromagnetic field to plasmas in the electron s rest frame is formulated as a Lorentz-invariant scalar quantity. The measure is tested by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in typical configurations: symmetric and asymmetric reconnection, with and without the guide field. The innermost region surrounding the reconnection site is accurately located in all cases. We further discuss implications for nonideal MHD dissipation.

The induced magnetosphere of the moon. 1: Theory

An analytic solution for the magnetic field in the space defined by a spherical moon and its downstream cylindrical cavity formed by the solar wind is derived for interplanetary magnetic fields both parallel and perpendicular to the cavity axis. By superposition, the solution is obtained for arbitrary orientations of the interplanetary field. The theory is quasi-static and is formulated in terms of a scalar magnetic potential. Thus the moon model consists of a core of arbitrary size and infinite electrical conductivity surrounded by a nonconducting shell; the cavity volume is assumed to be nonconducting. The variation of the magnetic field on the lunar surface, both on the sunlit and on the dark side hemispheres, and on the cavity boundary is presented for various values of core radius. The solution yields the distribution of currents on the lunar sunlit surface and the surface of the cavity. Theoretical transfer functions are presented and their variations with position on the lunar surface and with core size are discussed.

Invariant two-dimensional structures of vorticity field in nonviscous fluid

It is shown that a fluid flow which are invariant under translations along their vorticity field directions can be described in terms of a formally 2D system. Its nonviscous behavior of the scalar vorticity is governed by Hamiltonian dynamics, similar to the 2D line vortex case. Applying a statistical mechanical method, the equilibrium distribution of the vorticity field for such a general 2D system is shown to obey a nonlinear partial differential equation that is a generalization of the sinh-Poisson equation derived by Montgomery and Joyce (1973, 1974). Thus, if the domain containing the fluid is finite, similar negative temperature states may occur and the distribution of the vorticity intensity may become localized in space. The results are believed to have applications in studying large-scale partial and temporal properties of flows having small but nonzero viscosity. The analysis can probably be extended to other fluid systems with curved magnetic field lines.

Dynamic Subgrid Turbulence Modeling for Shallow Cumulus Convection Simulations beyond LES Resolutions

A scale-dependent dynamic Smagorinsky model is implemented in the Met Office/NERC Cloud (MONC) model using two averaging flavors, along Lagrangian pathlines and local moving averages. The dynamic approaches were compared against the conventional Smagorinsky–Lilly scheme in simulating the diurnal cycle of shallow cumulus convection. The simulations spanned from the LES to the near-gray-zone and gray-zone resolutions and revealed the adaptability of the dynamic model across the scales and different stability regimes. The dynamic model can produce a scale- and stability-dependent profile of the subfilter turbulence length scale across the chosen resolution range. At gray-zone resolutions the adaptive length scales can better represent the early precloud boundary layer leading to temperature and moisture profiles closer to the LES compared to the standard Smagorinsky. As a result, the initialization and general representation of the cloud field in the dynamic model is in good agreement with the LES. In contrast, the standard Smagorinsky produces a less well-mixed boundary layer, which fails to ventilate moisture from the boundary layer, resulting in the delayed spinup of the cloud layer. Moreover, strong downgradient diffusion controls the turbulent transport of scalars in the cloud layer. However, the dynamic approaches rely on the resolved field to account for nonlocal transports, leading to overenergetic structures when the boundary layer is fully developed and the Lagrangian model is used. Introducing the local averaging version of the model or adopting a new Lagrangian time scale provides stronger dissipation without significantly affecting model behavior.

Modified Brans-Dicke gravitational theory with nonzero divergence of the energy-momentum tensor

The Brans-Dicke theory of gravitation is modified by assuming that the divergence of the energy-momentum tensor is proportional to the covariant derivative of the scalar curvature. No ad hoc additions to the usual Brans-Dicke field equations are required as in Rastall's modification of the Einstein theory or as in the steady-state theories, of which this is a natural possibility. Three parameters emerge from the theory - namely, the unnormalized gravitational constant, the usual Brans-Dicke parameter, and the proportionality constant. In the post-Newtonian approximation, these parameters can be fixed by experiment. However, there exists a certain choice of the parameters for which the theory reduces to an Einstein theory with constant scalar curvature.

Systematic Generation of Moment Invariant Bases for 2D and 3D Tensor Fields

Moment invariants have been successfully applied to pattern detection tasks in 2D and 3D scalar, vector, and matrix valued data. However so far no flexible basis of invariants exists, i.e., no set that is optimal in the sense that it is complete and independent for every input pattern. Here, we prove that a basis of moment invariants can be generated that consists of tensor contractions of not more than two different moment tensors each under the conjecture of the set of all possible tensor contractions to be complete. This result allows us to derive the first generator algorithm that produces flexible bases of moment invariants with respect to orthogonal transformations by selecting a single non-zero moment to pair with all others in these two-factor products. Since at least one non-zero moment can be found in every non-zero pattern, this approach always generates a complete set of descriptors.

Relaxation times for Bose-Einstein condensation in axion miniclusters

We study the Bose condensation of scalar dark matter in the presence of both gravitational and self-interactions. Axions and other scalar dark matter in gravitationally bound miniclusters or dark matter halos are expected to condense into Bose-Einstein condensates called Bose stars. This process has been shown to occur through attractive self-interactions of the axionlike particles or through the field’s self gravitation. We show that in the high-occupancy regime of scalar dark matter, the Boltzmann collision integral does not describe either gravitational or self-interactions, and derive kinetic equations valid for these interactions. We use this formalism to compute relaxation times for the Bose-Einstein condensation, and find that condensation into Bose stars could occur within the lifetime of the Universe. The self-interactions reduce the condensation time only when they are very strong.

Recursion relations for 5-point conformal blocks

We consider 5-point functions in conformal field theories in d2 dimensions. Using weight-shifting operators, we derive recursion relations which allow for the computation of arbitrary conformal blocks appearing in 5-point functions of scalar operators, reducing them to a linear combination of blocks with scalars exchanged. We additionally derive recursion relations for the conformal blocks which appear when one of the external operators in the 5-point function has spin 1 or 2. Our results allow us to formulate positivity constraints using 5-point functions which describe the expectation value of the energy operator in bilocal states created by two scalars.

Approximate symmetries in d = 4 CFTs with an Einstein gravity dual

By applying the stress-tensor-scalar operator product expansion (OPE) twice, we search for algebraic structures in d = 4 conformal field theories (CFTs) with a pure Einstein gravity dual. We find that a rescaled mode operator defined by an integral of the stress tensor T ++ on a d = 2 plane satisfies a Virasoro-like algebra when the dimension of the scalar is large. The structure is enhanced to include a Kac-Moody-type algebra if we incorporate the T -- component. In our scheme, the central terms are finite. It remains challenging to directly compute the stress-tensor sector of d = 4 scalar four-point functions at large central charge, which, based on holography and bootstrap methods, were recently shown to have a Virasoro/ $\mathcal{W}$-algebra vacuum block-like structure.
