Visualizing Stereodynamics in Cold Collisions through Shape Resonance Wavefunctions

Shape resonances in cold collisions are often strongly affected by stereodynamics. These resonances can sometimes be assigned by single-channel quantization along the scattering coordinate. However, sensitive steric control of collision implies strong anisotropy of the interaction potential energy surface, which usually leads to coupling among multiple scattering channels in the strongly interacting region. Hence, the resonances might be the result of quantization in a multidimensional space. Using the cold rotationally inelastic collision between para-H 2 (v 1 = 1, j 1 = 2) and HF (v 2 = 0, j 2 = 0) as an example, we analyze four low-lying shape resonances via diagonalization of the full-dimensional Hamiltonian with a stabilization method. While some resonances can indeed be assigned with a single partial wave, others apparently involve more than one scattering channel. Furthermore, a new model based on these resonance wavefunctions is developed to better understand the stereodynamics through shape resonances in cold collisions.

In Situ Local Imaging of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in RbEuFe 4 As 4

The coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism is an intrinsically interesting research focus in condensed matter physics but the study is limited by low superconducting (T c ) and magnetic (T m ) transition temperatures in related materials. Here, we used a scanning superconducting quantum interference device to image the in-situ diamagnetic and ferromagnetic responses of RbEuFe 4 As 4 with high T c and T m . We observed significant suppression of superfluid density in vicinity of the magnetic phase transition, signifying fluctuation-enhanced magnetic scatterings between Eu spins and Fe 3d conduction electrons. Intriguingly, we observed multiple ferromagnetic domains which should be absent in an ideal magnetic helical phase. The formation of these domains demonstrates a weak c-axis ferromagnetic component probably arising from Eu spin-canting effect, indicative of possible superconductivity-driven domain Meissner and domain vortex-antivortex phases as revealed in EuFe 2 (As 0.79 P 0.21 ) 2 . Finally, our observations highlight RbEuFe 4 As 4 is a unique system which includes multiple interplay channels between superconductivity and ferromagnetism.

Single particle detection system for strong-field QED experiments

Abstract Measuring signatures of strong-field quantum electrodynamics (SF-QED) processes in an intense laser field is an experimental challenge: it requires detectors to be highly sensitive to single electrons and positrons in the presence of the typically very strong x-ray and γ -photon background levels. In this paper, we describe a particle detector capable of diagnosing single leptons from SF-QED interactions and discuss the background level simulations for the upcoming Experiment-320 at FACET-II (SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory). The single particle detection system described here combines pixelated scintillation LYSO screens and a Cherenkov calorimeter. We detail the performance of the system using simulations and a calibration of the Cherenkov detector at the ELBE accelerator. Single 3 GeV leptons are expected to produce approximately 537 detectable photons in a single calorimeter channel. This signal is compared to Monte-Carlo simulations of the experiment. A signal-to-noise ratio of 18 in a single Cherenkov calorimeter detector is expected and a spectral resolution of 2% is achieved using the pixelated LYSO screens.

Decay rates of almost strong modes in Floquet spin chains beyond Fermi's Golden Rule

The stability and dynamics of almost strong zero and π modes in weakly nonintegrable Floquet spin chains are investigated. Such modes can also be viewed as localized Majorana modes at the edge of a topological superconductor. Perturbation theory in the strength of integrability breaking interaction J z is employed to estimate the decay rates of these modes, and compared to decay rates obtained from exact diagonalization. Here, the structure of the perturbation theory and thus the lifetime of the modes is governed by the conservation of quasienergy modulo 2π/T, where T is the period of the Floquet system. If there are 4n – 1 bulk excitations whose quasienergies add up to zero (or π/T for a π mode), one obtains a decay channel of the Majorana mode with a decay rate proportional to $J$$^{2n}_{z}$. Thus the lifetime is sensitively controlled by the width of the single-particle Floquet bands. For regimes where the decay rates are quadratic in J z , an analytic expression for the decay rate in terms of an infinite temperature autocorrelation function of the integrable model is derived, and shown to agree well with exact diagonalization.

Exact Coherent Structures and Phase Space Geometry of Preturbulent 2D Active Nematic Channel Flow

Confined active nematics exhibit rich dynamical behavior, including spontaneous flows, periodic defect dynamics, and chaotic “active turbulence.” Here, we study these phenomena using the framework of exact coherent structures, which has been successful in characterizing the routes to high Reynolds number turbulence of passive fluids. Exact coherent structures are stationary, periodic, quasiperiodic, or traveling wave solutions of the hydrodynamic equations that, together with their invariant manifolds, serve as an organizing template of the dynamics. We compute the dominant exact coherent structures and connecting orbits in a preturbulent active nematic channel flow, which enables a fully nonlinear but highly reduced-order description in terms of a directed graph. Using this reduced representation, we compute instantaneous perturbations that switch the system between disparate spatiotemporal states occupying distant regions of the infinite-dimensional phase space. Overall, our results lay the groundwork for a systematic means of understanding and controlling active nematic flows in the moderate- to high-activity regime.

Prompt and non-prompt J/ψ production cross sections at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $ = 5.02 and 13 TeV

The production of J /ψ is measured at midrapidity ( |y| < 0 . 9) in proton-proton collisions at \( \sqrt{s} \) = 5 . 02 and 13 TeV, through the dielectron decay channel, using the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data sets used for the analyses correspond to integrated luminosities of \( \mathcal{L} \) int = 19.4 ± 0.4 nb - 1 and \( \mathcal{L} \) int = 32.2 ± 0.5 nb - 1 at \( \sqrt{s} \) = 5 . 02 and 13 TeV, respectively. The fraction of non-prompt J /ψ mesons, i.e. those originating from the decay of beauty hadrons, is measured down to a transverse momentum p T = 2 GeV /c (1 GeV /c ) at \( \sqrt{s} \) = 5 . 02 TeV (13 TeV). The p T and rapidity ( y ) differential cross sections, as well as the corresponding values integrated over p T and y , are carried out separately for prompt and non-prompt J /ψ mesons. The results are compared with measurements from other experiments and theoretical calculations based on quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The shapes of the p T and y distributions of beauty quarks predicted by state-of-the-art perturbative QCD models are used to extrapolate an estimate of the \( \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} \) pair cross section at midrapidity and in the total phase space. The total \( \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} \) cross sections are found to be \( {\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} \) = 541 ± 45 (stat . ) ± 69 \( {\left(\mathrm{syst}.\right)}_{-12}^{+10} \) (extr . ) μ b and \( {\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} \) = 218 ± 37 (stat . ) ± 31 \( {\left(\mathrm{syst}.\right)}_{-9.1}^{+8.2} \) (extr . ) μ b at \( \sqrt{s} \) = 13 and 5.02 TeV, respectively. The value obtained from the combination of ALICE and LHCb measurements in pp collisions at \( \sqrt{s} \) = 13 TeV is also provided.

Magnon-Magnon Interaction Induced by Dynamic Coupling in a Hybrid Magnonic Crystal

We report a combined experimental and numerical investigation of spin-wave dynamics in a hybrid magnonic crystal consisting of a CoFeB artificial spin ice (ASI) of stadium-shaped nanoelements patterned atop a continuous NiFe film separated by a 5 nm Al 2 O 3 spacer. Using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy, we probe the frequency dependence of thermal spin waves as functions of applied magnetic field and wavevector, revealing the decisive role of interlayer dipolar coupling in the magnetization dynamics. Micromagnetic simulations complement the experiments, showing a strong interplay between ASI edge modes and backward volume modes in the NiFe film. The contrast in saturation magnetization between CoFeB and NiFe enhances this coupling, leading to a pronounced hybridization manifested as a triplet of peaks in the BLS spectra predicted by simulations and observed experimentally. This magnon−magnon coupling persists over a wide magnetic field range, shaping both the spin-wave dispersion at fixed fields and the full frequency-field response throughout the magnetic hysteresis loop. Our findings establish how ASI geometry can selectively enhance specific spin-wave wavelengths in the underlying film, thereby boosting their amplitude and identifying them as preferential channels for spin wave transmission and manipulation.

Azimuthal angular correlation of J/ψ plus jet production at the electron-ion collider

By investigating the soft gluon radiation in the J/ψ plus jet photoproduction at the electron-ion collider (EIC), we demonstrate that the azimuthal angular correlations between the leading jet and heavy quarkonium provide a unique probe to the production mechanism of the latter. In particular, a significant cos⁡(φ) asymmetry is found for the color-singlet channel, whereas it vanishes or has an opposite sign for color-octet production, depending on the jet transverse momentum. Numerical results of cos⁡(φ) and cos⁡(2⁢φ) asymmetries employing both the color-singlet model and the nonrelativistic QCD approach are presented for typical kinematics at the future EIC.

Dissociation dynamics of the diamondoid adamantane upon photoionization by XUV femtosecond pulses

This work presents a photodissociation study of the diamondoid adamantane using extreme ultraviolet femtosecond pulses. The fragmentation dynamics of the dication is unraveled by the use of advanced ion and electron spectroscopy giving access to the dissociation channels as well as their energetics. To get insight into the fragmentation dynamics, we use a theoretical approach combining potential energy surface determination, statistical fragmentation methods and molecular dynamics simulations. We demonstrate that the dissociation dynamics of adamantane dications takes place in a two-step process: barrierless cage opening followed by Coulomb repulsion-driven fragmentation.

Broadband Nonreciprocity Enabled by Strong Coupling of Magnons and Microwave Photons

Nonreciprocity of signal transmission enhances the capacity of communication channels and protects the transmission quality against possible signal instabilities, thus becoming an important component for ensuring coherent information processing. However, nonreciprocal transmission requires breaking time-reversal symmetry (TRS), which poses challenges of both practical and fundamental character that hinder progress. Here we report an alternative scheme for achieving broadband nonreciprocity using a specially engineered hybrid microwave cavity. The TRS breaking is realized via strong coherent coupling between a selected chiral mode in the microwave cavity and a single collective spin excitation (magnon) in a ferromagnetic yttrium iron garnet sphere. The nonreciprocity in transmission is observed to span nearly a 0.5-GHz frequency band, which outperforms by two orders of magnitude the previously achieved bandwidths. Our findings suggest a promising direction for robust coherent information processing in a broad range of systems in both the classical and the quantum regime.

Entanglement entropy of a superflow

We consider the theory of N free Dirac fermions with a uniformly winding mass, me iqx , in two spacetime dimensions. This theory (which describes for instance a superconducting current in an N-channel wire) has been proposed to have a higher-spin gravity with scalar matter as the large-N dual. To order m 2 , however, thermodynamic quantities in it can be computed using standard general relativity instead. Here, we consider the question if the same is true for the entanglement entropy (EE). By comparing results obtained on two sides of the duality, we find that general relativity indeed accounts correctly for the EE of an interval to order m 2 (and all orders in q).

Multiparticle cumulant mapping for Coulomb explosion imaging: Calculations and algorithm

We present a versatile cumulant mapping algorithm for analyzing correlated particle emission, offering insights into complex electronic and nuclear dynamics. Recently, we have demonstrated the use of cumulant mapping to extract information-rich correlations between the momenta of multiple fragments produced in Coulomb explosion imaging experiments [C. Cheng et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 093001 (2023)]. We define cumulant mapping in terms of histograms, enabling fast computation of linear (additive) observables. However, applying the same algorithm to nonlinear (nonadditive) observables poses challenges, as the computation time of conventional estimators scales nonlinearly with data size. To overcome this, we develop estimators and an accompanying algorithm to enable computationally efficient estimation of the cumulant of interest. Comparisons of computation times and signal-to-noise ratios reveal the superior performance of our approach. This method is demonstrated on the (D+, D+, C+, O+) dissociation channel of CD 2 ⁢O 4+ produced in a strong-field ionization experiment. Additionally, Poisson statistics are used to simulate the two methods and provide insights into the efficiency of our algorithm. The proposed methodology unlocks efficient computation of cumulant mapping for a broader range of complex systems and observables, such as the laser pulse dependence of ionization dynamics.

Exploring color-octet scalar parameter space in minimal R-symmetric models

In this work we study the collider phenomenology of color-octet scalars (sgluons) in minimal supersymmetric models endowed with a global continuous R symmetry. We systematically catalog the significant decay channels of scalar and pseudoscalar sgluons and identify novel features that are natural in these models. These include decays in nonstandard diboson channels, such as to a gluon and a photon; three-body decays with considerable branching fractions; and long-lived particles with displaced vertex signatures. We also discuss the single and pair production of these particles and show that they can evade existing constraints from the Large Hadron Collider, to varying extents, in large regions of reasonable parameter space. We find, for instance, that a 725 GeV scalar and a 350 GeV or lighter pseudoscalar can still be accommodated in realistic scenarios.

Low and moderate resolution spectroscopy with an RCA charge-coupled device /CCD/

An RCA buried channel thinned 320 x 512 CCD has recently been put into operation as the detector on the blue side of a new double spectrograph used at the Cassegrain focus of the Hale 5.08 m telescope. The chip is used in a vacuum dewer at a temperature of -132 C. The readout noise over most of the chip is 46 electrons per pixel, but on one side of the device there are columns with readout noise three times as high as this. When used in a spectroscopic mode with an f/1.5 beam, the CCD shows interference pattterns with an amplitude of 5 to 20%. This pattern occurs most clearly above 5000 A. It appears to be stable and can be removed by using standard flat-field exposures. At signal levels of a few hundred electrons there are some charge transfer problems. The quantum efficiency between 4000 and 6500 is very high, and the efficiency at 3260 A is about 20% of that at 4200 A. Above 6500 A the sensitivity begins to drop steadily.

Neutron Capture Cross Sections of Radioactive Nuclei

Alternative methods to calculate neutron capture cross sections on radioactive nuclei are reported using the theory of Inclusive Non-Elastic Breakup (INEB) developed by Hussein and McVoy. The statistical coupled-channels theory proposed in Ref. [2] is further extended in the realm of random matrices. The case of reactions with the projectile and the target being twocluster nuclei is also analyzed and applications are made for scattering from a deuteron target. An extension of the theory to a three-cluster projectile incident on a two-cluster target is also discussed. The theoretical developments described here should open new possibilities to obtain information on the neutron capture cross sections of radioactive nuclei using indirect methods.

Optimal Twirling Depth for Classical Shadows in the Presence of Noise

The classical shadows protocol is an efficient strategy for estimating properties of an unknown state p using a small number of state copies and measurements. In its original form, it involves twirling the state with unitaries from some ensemble and measuring the twirled state in a fixed basis. It was recently shown that for computing local properties, optimal sample complexity (copies of the state required) is remarkably achieved for unitaries drawn from shallow depth circuits composed of local entangling gates, as opposed to purely local (zero depth) or global twirling (infinite depth) ensembles. Here, we consider the sample complexity as a function of the depth of the circuit, in the presence of noise. We find that this noise has important implications for determining the optimal twirling ensemble. Under fairly general conditions, we (i) show that any single-site noise can be accounted for using a depolarizing noise channel with an appropriate damping parameter f, (ii) compute thresholds f th at which optimal twirling reduces to local twirling for Pauli operators, (iii) nth order Renyi entropies (n ≥2), and (iv) provide a meaningful upper bound t max on the optimal circuit depth for any finite noise strength f, which applies to observables and entanglement entropy measurements. In conclusion, these thresholds strongly constrain the search for optimal strategies to implement shadow tomography and are easily tailored to the experimental system at hand.

Ground state properties of a spin-3/2 Fermi gas

Highlights: • A generalized spin-3/2 Fermi liquid is studied via diagram technique and Green’s function • The spin-mixing term strengthens ground state energy and effective mass Diagram technique is employed to study ground state properties of a generalized spin-3/2 Fermi gas which consists of more spin components and interacting channels than the spin-1/2 system. The interaction parameters are supposed to be spin-dependent, including a spin-mixing parameter which is absent in the spin-1/2 Fermi gas. The chemical potential, ground state energy and effective mass are calculated after elaborately dealing with the effective interaction and the self-energy. Contributions of each interaction term are derived within the second-order perturbation. It is found that the spin-mixing term always strengthens the ground state energy and effective mass.

Algebraic Hastatic Order in One-Dimensional Two-Channel Kondo Lattice

The two-channel Kondo lattice likely hosts a rich array of phases, including hastatic order, a channel symmetry breaking heavy Fermi liquid. In this work, we revisit its one-dimensional phase diagram using density matrix renormalization group and, in contrast to previous work, find algebraic hastatic orders generically for stronger couplings. These are heavy Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids with nonanalyticities at Fermi vectors captured by hastatic density waves. We also find a predicted additional nonlocal order parameter due to interference between hastatic spinors, not present at large N, and residual repulsive interactions at strong coupling suggesting non-Fermi-liquid physics in higher dimensions.
