Biogeochemical cycling and remote sensing

Research is underway at the NASA Ames Research Center that is concerned with aspects of the nitrogen cycle in terrestrial ecosystems. An interdisciplinary research group is attempting to correlate nitrogen transformations, processes, and productivity with variables that can be remotely sensed. Recent NASA and other publications concerning biogeochemical cycling at global scales identify attributes of vegetation that could be related or explain the spatial variation in biologically functional variables. These functional variables include net primary productivity, annual nitrogen mineralization, and possibly the emission rate of nitrous oxide from soils.

A preliminary analysis of a comet coma sample-return mission

It is pointed out that the exploration and characterization of comets can play a fundamental role in solar system science. Comets are probably primitive products of processes which occurred in the preplanetary solar nebula. The impending return of Halley's comet in 1986 provides an opportunity for a study of comets, and five spacecraft will be launched to intercept Halley. These spacecraft include two sent by the USSR, two by Japan, and one by the European Space Agency (ESA). NASA has recommended two programs for the exploration and characterization of comets. The first mission considered would be a rendezvous with a short-period comet, while the second mission would provide for the return to earth of a sample of the volatile and nonvolatile constituents of the coma of a comet. Developments related to these plans are discussed.

The Caltech Concurrent Computation Program - Project description

The Caltech Concurrent Computation Program wwhich studies basic issues in computational science is described. The research builds on initial work where novel concurrent hardware, the necessary systems software to use it and twenty significant scientific implementations running on the initial 32, 64, and 128 node hypercube machines have been constructed. A major goal of the program will be to extend this work into new disciplines and more complex algorithms including general packages that decompose arbitrary problems in major application areas. New high-performance concurrent processors with up to 1024-nodes, over a gigabyte of memory and multigigaflop performance are being constructed. The implementations cover a wide range of problems in areas such as high energy and astrophysics, condensed matter, chemical reactions, plasma physics, applied mathematics, geophysics, simulation, CAD for VLSI, graphics and image processing. The products of the research program include the concurrent algorithms, hardware, systems software, and complete program implementations.

Fluidized-Bed Cleaning of Silicon Particles

Fluidized-bed chemical cleaning process developed to remove metallic impurities from small silicon particles. Particles (250 micrometer in size) utilized as seed material in silane pyrolysis process for production of 1-mm-size silicon. Product silicon (1 mm in size) used as raw material for fabrication of solar cells and other semiconductor devices. Principal cleaning step is wash in mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids, leaching out metals and carrying them away as soluble chlorides. Particles fluidized by cleaning solution to assure good mixing and uniform wetting.

A software technology evaluation program

A set of quantitative approaches is presented for evaluating software development methods and tools. The basic idea is to generate a set of goals which are refined into quantifiable questions which specify metrics to be collected on the software development and maintenance process and product. These metrics can be used to characterize, evaluate, predict, and motivate. They can be used in an active as well as passive way by learning form analyzing the data and improving the methods and tools based upon what is learned from that analysis. Several examples were given representing each of the different approaches to evaluation. The cost of the approaches varied inversely with the level of confidence in the interpretation of the results.

NASA's approach to space commercialization

The NASA Office of Commercial Programs fosters private participation in commercially oriented space projects. Five Centers for the Commercial Development of Space encourage new ideas and perform research which may yield commercial processes and products for space ventures. Joint agreements allow companies who present ideas to NASA and provide flight hardware access to a free launch and return from orbit. The experimenters furnish NASA with sufficient data to demonstrate the significance of the results. Ground-based tests are arranged for smaller companies to test the feasibility of concepts before committing to the costs of developing hardware. Joint studies of mutual interest are performed by NASA and private sector researchers, and two companies have signed agreements for a series of flights in which launch costs are stretched out to meet projected income. Although Shuttle flights went on hold following the Challenger disaster, extensive work continues on the preparation of commercial research payloads that will fly when Shuttle flights resume.

Single-Layer, Multicolor Electroluminescent Phosphors

Etching eliminated in producing phosphor layers for displays. New process enables production of single-layer, two-color phosphor layer without etching. Method of construction, beginning with glass substrate with electrode and insulator layers, involves deposition of green phosphor masking with metal mask or photoresist; diffusion or ion implantation of manganese through mask to produce red phosphor and removal of mask.

Grace DAKASEP alkaline battery separator

The Grace DAKASEP separator was originally developed as a wicking layer for nickel-zinc alkaline batteries. The DAKASEP is a filled non-woven separator which is flexible and heat sealable. Through modification of formulation and processing variables, products with a variety of properties can be produced. Variations of DAKASEP were tested in Ni-H2, Ni-Zn, Ni-Cd, and primary alkaline batteries with good results. The properties of DAKASEP which are optimized for Hg-Zn primary batteries are shown in tabular form. This separator has high tensile strength, 12 micron average pore size, relatively low porosity at 46-48 percent, and consequently moderately high resistivity. Versions were produced with greater than 70 percent porosity and resistivities in 33 wt percent KOH as low as 3 ohm cm. Performance data for Hg-Zn E-1 size cells containing DAKASEP with the properties shown in tabular form, are more reproducible than data obtained with a competitive polypropylene non-woven separator. In addition, utilization of active material is in general considerably improved.

SARSCEST (human factors)

People interact with the processes and products of contemporary technology. Individuals are affected by these in various ways and individuals shape them. Such interactions come under the label 'human factors'. To expand the understanding of those to whom the term is relatively unfamiliar, its domain includes both an applied science and applications of knowledge. It means both research and development, with implications of research both for basic science and for development. It encompasses not only design and testing but also training and personnel requirements, even though some unwisely try to split these apart both by name and institutionally. The territory includes more than performance at work, though concentration on that aspect, epitomized in the derivation of the term ergonomics, has overshadowed human factors interest in interactions between technology and the home, health, safety, consumers, children and later life, the handicapped, sports and recreation education, and travel. Two aspects of technology considered most significant for work performance, systems and automation, and several approaches to these, are discussed.

Elevated temperature slow plastic deformation of NiAl/TiB2 particulate composites

The 'XD' process for production of discontinuously-reinforced metal-matrix composites has been used to enhance the high-temperature strength of NiAl-TiB2 composites with particulate densities of up to 30 vol pct. SEM, TEM, and optical characterizations of the resulting microstructures showed the average TiB2 particle size to be about 1 micron, while the average grain of the NiAl matrix was of the order of 10 microns. Elevated temperature compression tests conducted at 1200 and 1300 K indicated flow strengths to increase with TiB2 content, so that the 20 vol pct TiB2-reinforced composite was three times stronger than the unreinforced NiAl; this is ascribed to the very high density of microstructural tangled dislocations, loops, and subgrain boundaries connecting the particles.

Timely transfer of technology to the marketplace

NASA has had a very successful technology transfer program since its inception. This program has two components, technology dissemination and technology applications. NASA disseminates technology information through various publications, such as its Technical Briefs, and through dissemination centers located throughout the U.S. The agency's technology application program, often in cooperation with other federal agencies, assists the private sector in utilizing existing aerospace technoloogies to develop commercial products and processes.
