Real-time power management technique for microgrid with flexible boundaries

In order to diminish the impacts brought by high penetration of renewable energy on the reliability of distribution systems, some distribution networks (e.g. Chattanooga electric power board system) have deployed smart switches (SSs) to island some areas to mitigate outage losses. However, due to intermittency and sharply changing rate of renewable energy, it is likely to experience insufficient or excessive power for islanded areas. Therefore, a microgrid controller featured with flexible boundaries is proposed. With proposed microgrid controller, the microgrid can not only shrink or expand its boundaries according to current renewable energy supply, but also disconnect/connect to the main grid with a designated SS. Furthermore, to ensure the microgrid controller could obtain suitable boundaries on the time scale of seconds, a real-time power management technique with alternative generating algorithm is designed to generate all possible alternative boundaries and choose the optimal one, which is scalable to any topology. In addition, in order to maintain state of charge of batteries within a desirable range, anti-overcharge/discharge strategies are designed. Four comprehensive experiments verify that the implementation of the microgrid controllers can realise flexible boundaries and deal with sharply changing rate of renewable generation or load on the time scale of seconds.

Fast and fault-tolerant model predictive control of MMCs under selective harmonic elimination

Selective harmonic elimination (SHE) is a suitable pulse-width modulation (PWM) tech-nique for some applications of modular multilevel converters (MMC) with lower numberof semiconductor submodules (SM). However, SHE can make it difficult to control circu-lating currents in the MMC. Moreover, the MMC is vulnerable to SM switch failures thatreduce its output power magnitude and quality. This paper proposes a fault-tolerant modelpredictive control strategy for MMCs operating with SHE (FT SHE-MPC). The effects ofswitch failure on phase voltage waveforms are studied first. Then, a method is proposedto design the FT SHE waveform to preserve its harmonic performance. Next, the pro-posed FT SHE-MPC is designed to increase the capacitor voltages during an SM failure tomaintain the fundamental component of the faulty phase voltage and control the circulat-ing currents, maintaining balance among line voltages and the output power of the MMC.Additionally, the proposed method offers as much as 60% faster FT transition time and asmuch as 36% lower capacitor voltage ripple. The advantages of the proposed method areverified through offline and real-time simulation studies on a three-phase nine-level MMCin PSCAD/EMTDC software and RTDS.

Analysis of High Frequency AC Link Isolated Three Port Resonant Converter for UAV Applications

A high frequency AC link isolated three port semi-bridgeless resonant converter is analyzed for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications in this study. The proposed topology is established by replacing rectifier lover diodes with synchronous switches. A phase shifted pulse width modulation (PS-PWM) technique adjusts bi-directional power flow between ports. Proposed control technique provides high efficiency by reducing switching losses with zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero current switching (ZCS) in a wide power range regulation. Compared to integrated PWM converters in a bi-directional mode, the proposed topology reduces the number of converter stages and allows centralized control at high operating frequency. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed converter at a full power of 500 W in laboratory conditions.

Olympus System Backplane Definition

The purpose of this document is to define the backplane of the Olympus firing system, a modular system based on SpaceWire communication between modules. The backplane provides the connection between the modules, controller (embedded in the front module), the SpaceWire router, and an alternative switch. Those connections include SpaceWire links, interlocks, a key, a dead-man switch (DMS)/charge, timing lines, power distribution, geographical addresses, and communication to the human-machine interface (HMI). This backplane is based on the VMEBus International Trade Association (VITA) 46 Specification (VPX) and OpenVPX standards for a 3U backplane. Unless otherwise specified, those standards apply for signal definitions and mechanical specifications.

Maritime Fuel Cell Generator Project [FY2018]

Fuel costs and emissions in maritime ports are an opportunity for transportation energy efficiency improvement and emissions reduction efforts. Ocean-going vessels, harbor craft, and cargo handling equipment are still major contributors to air pollution in and around ports. Diesel engine costs continually increase as tighter criteria pollutant regulations come into effect and will continue to do so with expected introduction of carbon emission regulations. Diesel fuel costs will also continue to rise as requirements for cleaner fuels are imposed. Both aspects will increase the cost of diesel-based power generation on the vessel and on shore. Although fuel cells have been used in many successful applications, they have not been technically or commercially validated in the port environment. One opportunity to do so was identified in Honolulu Harbor at the Young Brothers Ltd. wharf. At this facility, barges sail regularly to and from neighboring islands and containerized diesel generators provide power for the reefers while on the dock and on the barge during transport, nearly always at part load. Due to inherent efficiency characteristics of fuel cells and diesel generators, switching to a hydrogen fuel cell power generator was found to have potential emissions and cost savings. Deployment in Hawaii showed the unit needed greater reliability in the start-up sequence, as well as an improved interface to the end-user, thereby presenting opportunities for repairing/upgrading the unit for deployment in another locale. In FY2018, the unit was repaired and upgraded based on the Hawaii experience, and another deployment site was identified for another 6-month deployment of the 100 kW MarFC.

Laser-Plasma Spatiotemporal Cyanide Spectroscopy and Applications

This article reports new measurements of laser-induced plasma hypersonic expansion measurements of diatomic molecular cyanide (CN). Focused, high-peak-power 1064 nm Q-switched radiation of the order of 1 TW/cm 2 generated optical breakdown plasma in a cell containing a 1:1 molar gas mixture of N 2 and CO 2 at a fixed pressure of 1.1 × 10 5 Pascal and in a 100 mL/min flow of the mixture. Line-of-sight (LOS) analysis of recorded molecular spectra indicated the outgoing shockwave at expansion speeds well in excess of Mach 5. Spectra of atomic carbon confirmed increased electron density near the shockwave, and, equally, molecular CN spectra revealed higher excitation temperature near the shockwave. Results were consistent with corresponding high-speed shadowgraphs obtained by visualization with an effective shutter speed of 5 nanoseconds. In addition, LOS analysis and the application of integral inversion techniques allow inferences about the spatiotemporal plasma distribution.

Fast Growth of Ga2O3 on Highly Offcut (100)-Oriented Substrates

Beta-Ga2O3 has emerged as a leading candidate for next-generation power electronics, radio frequency (RF) switches, and extreme environment electronics due to a wide band gap (4.6 - 4.9 eV), high dopability (approximately 40 meV activation energy for an isolated silicon donor), and melt growth characteristics resulting in commercially available 4-inch substrates and commercial demonstrations of 6-inch substrates by multiple techniques. The (100) surface of Ga2O3 is highly desirable from a device and epitaxy standpoint - bulk growth of (100) material is more scalable than (010), the surface is nearly lattice-matched to p-type partner NiO, and Al2O3 incorporates at higher concentrations without phase separation. More importantly, the impact ionization coefficients along the [100] direction are low, leading to the highest possible critical fields. This is advantageous compared to the current state of the art, (001), due to reduced surface defects and increased possible breakdown voltage. However, the epitaxial growth rate on (100) surfaces is less than 10% of other faces due to weak bonding and favorable desorption, and on-axis (100) growth easily forms twin domains. Recent demonstrations have shown growth rate improvements from 0.4 nm/min to 1.5 nm/min by growing on (100) wafers that are offcut 6 degrees in the -c direction. These films show step-flow growth from (20-1) step-edges and high electron mobility due to suppressed twins. Despite these exciting results, offcuts greater than 6 degrees have not been explored due to the waste associated with grinding and polishing large offcuts. In this talk we will discuss the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth and properties of Beta-Ga2O3 grown on (100) substrates offcut in the -c direction up to 13.4 degrees. These large offcuts are enabled by edge-fed film-defined growth (EFG) where the offcut is grown into the surface by pulling the crystal through the EFG die with the seed crystal rotated by the desired offcut angle. We will demonstrate that 13.4 degrees offcut substrates still exhibit a terraced (100) surface, and that a >10x increase (>5 nm/min) in growth rate is achieved. As previously reported on lower offcuts, we observe reversal of substrate twin domains around the (001) direction at the substrate-epilayer interface. We will discuss electrical properties including record-low (by MBE) unintentional doping densities of < 5E15 cm-3 and critical breakdown field in Schottky barrier diodes comparable with state-of-the-art (001) Ga2O3 without edge termination.

A study of power conditioning and power distribution and components

A comprehensive simulation and analysis performed on the operation of the regulator part of the Charger/Battery/Regulator Module (CBRM) are detailed. The CBRM is utilized as an integral component of the Skylab/Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) electrical power system and contains a switching mode electronic regulator. Implementing circuit analysis techniques, pertinent voltages and currents are calculated; these, in turn, are incorporated into the regulator system study. Investigation of the turn-on and turn-off times associated with the switching circuitry is performed and an examination is made on these calculations. A simulation model computer program is utilized to generate graphs that relate various CBRM parameters to one another.

Ion beams from laser-generated plasmas

The paper describes the space-charge-limited beams produced by the plasma blowoffs generated by 20-MW bursts of 1.06-micron radiation from an active Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Laser power densities near 10 to the 11th/sq cm on solid targets generate thermalized plasma plumes which drift to a 15-kV gridded extraction gap where the ions are extracted, accelerated, and electrostatically focused; the spatially defined ion beams are then magnetically analyzed to determine the charge state content in the beams formed from carbon, aluminum, copper, and lead targets. This technique preserves time-of-flight (TOF) information in the plasma drift region, which permits plasma ion temperatures and mass flow velocities to be determined from the Maxwellian ion curve TOF shapes for the individual charge species.
