A compact design for an electric driven hydraulic gear machine capable of multiple quadrant operation

This paper presents an innovative design of an integrated electro-hydraulic (EH) flow generation unit able to operate in multiple quadrants. The proposed unit is composed of a hydraulic machine which can operate in either pumping or motoring mode, and an electric machine, which can operate as electric motor or generator. The adopted morphological integration of the two unit fulfills the goals of maximizing compactness, power to weight ratio, energy efficiency and quietness. Furthermore, the design results from a numerical optimization procedure that includes detailed simulation of both the electric machine and the hydraulic machine, using simulation tools previously developed by the authors, but combined for the first time in this work. After describing the optimization procedure, the paper focuses on the design integration aspects of the novel unit. A 9 kW prototype of the integrated unit was also fabricated and tested to verify its performance. Tests results show a measured overall energy efficiency up to 69%, demonstrating the potentials of the proposed concept, despite some limitations present in the first prototypes which could be addressed in future design refinements.

Hydrogen Component Performance Diagnostic Testing (CRADA CRD-18-743 Final Report)

H2@Scale is focused on the wide scale adoption of hydrogen as a flexible energy storage medium. Due to the low volumetric energy density of gaseous hydrogen, compressors are an essential component of hydrogen storage. Hydrogen compressors that support a flexible grid and on-demand vehicle fueling undergo challenging operating conditions, such as a high number of start and stop cycles and wide input and discharge pressure ranges. Equally robust components are required for these conditions while still meeting the financial requirements of sustainable hydrogen compression.

A mechanical property and stress corrosion evaluation of Custom 455 stainless steel alloy

The mechanical and stress corrosion properties are presented of vacuum melted Custom 455 stainless steel alloy bar (1.0-inch diameter) and sheet (0.083-inch thick) material aged at 950 F, 1000 F, and 1050 F. Low temperature mechanical properties were determined at temperatures of 80 F, 0 F, -100 F, and -200 F. For all three aging treatments, the ultimate tensile and 0.2 percent offset yield strengths increased with decreasing test temperatures while the elongation held fairly constant down to -100 F and decreased at -200 F. Reduction in Area decreased moderately with decreasing temperature for the longitudinal round (0.250-inch diameter) specimens. Notched tensile strength and charpy V-notched impact strength decreased with decreasing test temperature. For all three aging treatments, no failures were observed in the unstressed specimens or the specimens stressed to 50, 75, and 100 percent of their yield strengths for 180 days of alternate immersion testing in a 3.5 percent NaCl solution. As indicated by the results of tensile tests performed after alternate immersion testing, the mechanical properties of Custom 455 alloy were not affected by stress or exposure under the conditions of the evaluation.

Long-term weathering effects on the thermal performance of the Libbey-Owens-Ford (liquid) solar collector

Thermal performance tests were conducted on the Libbey-Owens-Ford liquid collector, following long term exposure to natural weathering conditions. Visual inspection of the collector, prior to the retest, indicated noticeable clouding of the inner cover glass, probably resulting from outgassing of the insulation. The absorber plate also showed some discoloration. The test results indicated that performance degradation had occurred at inlet temperatures significantly above ambient. The change in the slope of the efficiency curve, from the original data, is a direct indicator of an increase in the collector heat loss coefficient.

AMPA experimental communications systems

The program was conducted to demonstrate the satellite communication advantages of Adaptive Phased Array Technology. A laboratory based experiment was designed and implemented to demonstrate a low earth orbit satellite communications system. Using a 32 element, L-band phased array augmented with 4 sets of weights (2 for reception and 2 for transmission) a high speed digital processing system and operating against multiple user terminals and interferers, the AMPA system demonstrated: communications with austere user terminals, frequency reuse, communications in the face of interference, and geolocation. The program and experiment objectives are described, the system hardware and software/firmware are defined, and the test performed and the resultant test data are presented.

Preparation, characterization, physical testing and performance of flurocarbon membranes and separators

The direct fluorination method of converting carefully selected hydrocarbon substrates to fluorinated membranes was successfully applied to produce promising, novel membranes for electrochemical devices. A family of polymer blends was identified which permits wide latitude in the concentration of both crosslinks and carboxyl groups in hydrocarbon membranes. The membranes of paragraph two were successfully fluorinated.

Preparation, characterization, physical testing and performance of fluorocarbon membranes and separators

These membranes were successfully fluorinated and are potentially competitive with commercial membranes in performance, and potentially much cheaper in price.

Simulator Tests Controller Performance

Compact servosystem applies simulated dynamic loads, enabling realistic appraisal of motor and its control system without inconvenience of attaching real load. System simulates moments of inertia, rotational vibrations, changing load torques, and other characteristics of large or complex loads, without loads themselves and without awkwardness (and inaccuracy) of gravity-compensating devices used with such loads.

Duty cycle testing and performance evaluation of the SM-229 teleoperator

The first known experimental studies and analyses of teleoperator performance for specific duty cycles are discussed. The results are presented in two distinct areas as position usage patterns, and as three-dimensional power grids. The position usage patterns are a valuable means to assess the available motion range. The power grids are a unique concept for evaluating joint performance. Final conclusions contain recommendations to upgrade the teleoperator for optimum performance.

System Testing and Performance Characterization of the LITE Laser Transmitter Module at NASA

The Laser Transmitter Module (LTM) is a three-color Q-switched flashlamp pumped Nd:YAG laser. The original design concept was to package commercially available optics and flashlamp electronics for spaceflight with a power consumption goal of 2200 W and a weight goal of 600 lbs. The optical output was to exceed 200 mJ of IR, 400 mJ of green, and 150 mJ of UV per pulse at 10 Hz. The new space qualified laser exceeds the optical output requirements by 188 percent, 50 percent, and 13 percent in the UR, green, and UV respectively. This output needs only 1500 W at a weight of only 500 lbs. The LTM was delivered to the NASA Langley Research Center in December 1991. Optical characterization is now being completed.
