Real-World Subsynchronous Oscillation Events in Power Grids with High Penetrations of Inverter-Based Resources

This paper presents a survey of real-world sub-synchronous oscillation events associated with inverter-based resources (IBR) over the past decade. The focus is on those oscillations in the subsynchronous frequency range known to be influenced by power grid characteristics, e.g., series compensation or low system strength. A brief overview of the historical events is presented followed by detailed descriptions of a series of events. This paper also examines causation mechanisms and proposes future research directions to meet grid needs worldwide.

Adaptive Deep Reinforcement Learning Algorithm for Distribution System Cyber Attack Defense With High Penetration of DERs

With grid modernization, smart inverters are increasingly used to execute advanced controls for distribution network reliability. However, this also increases the cyber-attack space. Here this paper focuses on the defense approaches to restore the system to normal operation circumstances in the presence of cyber-attacks. A unique deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method is developed to minimize voltage violations and reduce power losses for impacted feeders. The defense problem is reformulated as a Markov decision-making process to dynamically control DERs while minimizing load shedding. This is achieved via an improved soft actor-critic (SAC)-based DRL algorithm, which can govern DER set points and load-shedding scenarios in discrete and continuous modes via the auto-tune entropy and Gaussian policy features. Numerical comparison results on the modified IEEE 123-node system with other control approaches, such as Volt-VAR (VV), Volt-Watt (VW), and model predictive control (MPC) show that the proposed method can eliminate voltage violations and provide feasible control actions that perform complete mitigation of cyber-threats.

Data-Driven Protection Software to classify fault locations by protective zone in distribution systems with high PV penetration

The software contains (a) the source codes to generate Point-on-Wave (PoW) transient data for any feeder model in Alternative Transient Program (ATP) format. Codes provide options to change different steady state settings, including the loading condition and PV capacity and transient state setting like faults type, location and initiation time (b) data post-processing source code to converted data from native format to COMTRADE, csv, HDF5 (c) Docker container to train CNN to classify fault locations by protective zone. The container takes dataset and other training parameters (sampling rate, training epochs, batch size etc) as input to train CNN. The container writes back the trained CNN model, training and testing metrics and plots to the local workstation

Enabling a Flexible Grid with Increased Penetration of DER: Techno-economic Analysis of Metal Hydride Thermochemical Energy Storage Integrated with Stirling Engine for Grid Energy Storage Applications

This report summarizes the results of a techno-economic assessment of the capital and operational expenses for 3 scenarios utilizing a TES/Stirling engine system which is charged by an electric heater to provide grid power and energy storage. While there are several integration possibilities and material choices that could be utilized in such systems, three difference scenarios were chosen for this assessment to reflect an anticipated deployment of the technology where each might require different TES system configurations. Additionally, an enhanced version of the HTMH is considered to demonstrate the expected impact on costs with further technology development. The predicted capital and operational LCOS for the system configurations range from $0.0198/kWhr e - $0.0734/kWhr e which compare positively to the LCOS for lithium ion battery storage ranging from $0.087/kWhr e – $0.329/kWhr e . The key drivers for cost improvements to the system are material property enhancements in the HTMH primarily related to reducing the costs associated with the HTMH vessel and heat exchangers. This analysis demonstrates the potential benefits and flexibility of integrating a Stirling engine with a metal hydride-based TES system and suggests that the MH TES technology, at its current level of development, provides a highly competitive alternative to lithium ion batteries for large scale grid energy storage applications.

Integrating System to Edge-of-Network Architecture and Management for SHINES (SEAMS) Technologies of High Penetration Grids

Consistent with the U.S. DOE’s EERE SHINES FOA objectives, the goal of this project was to enable integration from EMS to variable DER in a way that delivered visibility and opportunities for managing and controlling distributed resources using SEAMS technologies. This project implemented several SHINES technologies, which included: (1) three Stem battery systems; (2) six ConnectDER PV collars; (3) two E-Gear PV/Battery storage interfaces; and (4) eight Kitu smart inverter emulators. A Siemens Energy IP DEMS was deployed in a development environment and integrated with the SHINES technologies via OpenADR and IEEE 2030.5 protocols with documented architecture. In the case of IEEE 2030.5, a suite of technologies including a gateway, an API, software and a server from Kitu Systems (the Citadel, Convoy, Kitu Crosslink API, and Kitu Spark) were used to demonstrate that the utility could achieve visibility of distributed energy resources (DER) and control of single and multiple DER systems with a single command. The project also included a LCOE analysis of SHINES technologies compared to traditional system and circuit mitigation measures.

Scalable/Secure Cooperative Algorithms and Framework for Extremely-high Penetration Solar Integration (SolarExPert) (Final Technical Report)

This SolarExPert project has developed a Sustainable Grid Platform (SGP) with scalable architecture of distributed control and optimization. The SGP consists of the following major functions: 1) an advanced grid architecture with hierarchical and distributed communication and control, combined with the OpenFMB standard and implemented on the Multi-Agent OpenDSS (MA-OpenDSS) platform; 2) an online distributed stochastic optimal power flow; 3) an online distributed system state estimation algorithm; 4) the distributed Volt/VAR optimization and frequency control algorithms; 5) the distributed distribution system restoration strategy. The developed SGP together with advanced functions are tested in 1 million (1M)-node distribution system on the MA-OpenDSS platform. Furthermore, the models and algorithms are tested in 100,000-node system HiL simulation, and also in P-HiL implementation with 100 physical devices. The developed functions haven been validated and tested on the selected actual distribution feeder with the data collected from the field of Maui Meadows in Hawaii. The distributed PV hosting capacities with cooperative Volt/VAR and Volt/VAR/Watt control are estimated and compared to provide recommendations for customers and the utility company.

Protection of Distribution Circuits with High Penetration of Solar PV: Distance, Learning, and Estimation-Based Methods

The results of DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office project 34233 are presented. The newest version of IEEE Standard 1547 enables photovoltaic inverters to ride through voltage disturbances, improving bulk system reliability, at the expense of removing undervoltage trip as a fast method of de facto fault detection in high PV adoption scenarios. The project explored new methods of fault detection that don't rely on communication systems and could be available quickly, including distance-based schemes, focused directional relays, and two different data-driven schemes. The schemes were evaluated with fast-phasor simulation, electromagnetic transient simulation, and field data collection at partner utilities Chattanooga Electric Power Board and Dominion Energy Virginia. Accomplishments and possible paths forward are summarized.

Penetration Bounds For Azimuthal Slot On Infinite Cylinder With Finite Length Backing Cylindrical Cavity

We examine coupling into azimuthal slots on an infinite cylinder with a infinite length interior cavity operating both at the fundamental cavity modal frequencies, with small slots and a resonant slot, as well as higher frequencies. The coupling model considers both radiation on an infinite cylindrical exterior as well as a half space approximation. Bounding calculations based on maximum slot power reception and interior power balance are also discussed in detail and compared with the prior calculations. For higher frequencies limitations on matching are imposed by restricting the loads ability to shift the slot operation to the nearest slot resonance; this is done in combination with maximizing the power reception as a function of angle of incidence. Finally, slot power mismatch based on limited cavity load quality factor is considered below the first slot resonance.
