MRPP UO x Product Recover System Upgrade

The Material Recovery Pilot Plant (MRPP) produces U 3 O 8 /OU 3 product in powder form. This product must be collected, and cyclonic separators are an efficient method for collecting particles from an air stream. However, the M10 SafeVac currently installed at MRPP has design flaws and is failing. A new, semi-custom cyclonic separator from Hanningfield has been designed and ordered to replace the SafeVac. The Hanningfield model will be more efficient and better designed to suit the recovery at MRPP, increasing the quality of research produced at the plant. Unit cost is $118,000 with a 24 week lead time. It is expected to be operational by January 2025.

Multiplexed Knockouts in the Model Diatom Phaeodactylum by Episomal Delivery of a Selectable Cas9

Marine diatoms are eukaryotic microalgae that play significant ecological and biogeochemical roles in oceans. They also have significant potential as organismal platforms for exploitation to address biotechnological and industrial goals. In order to address both modes of research, sophisticated molecular and genetic tools are required. We presented here new and improved methodologies for introducing CRISPRCas9 to the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum cells and a streamlined protocol for genotyping mutant cell lines with previously unknown phenotypes. First, bacterialconjugation was optimized for the delivery of Cas9 by transcriptionally fusing Cas9 to a selectable marker by the 2A peptide. An episome cloning strategy using both negative and positive selection was developed to streamline CRISPR-episome assembly. Next, cell line picking and genotyping strategies, that utilize manual sequencing curation, TIDE sequencing analysis, and a T7 endonuclease assay, were developed to shorten the time required to generate mutants. Following this new experimental pipeline, both singlegene and two-gene knockout cell lines were generated at mutagenesis efficiencies of 48% and 25%, respectively. Lastly, a protocol for precise gene insertions via CRISPRCas9 targeting was developed using particle-bombardment transformation methods. Overall, the novel Cas9 episome design and improved genotyping methods presented here allow for quick and easy genotyping and isolation of Phaeodactylum mutant cell lines (less than 3 weeks) without relying on a known phenotype to screen for mutants.

Towards Enhancing Coding Productivity for GPU Programming Using Static Graphs

The main contribution of this work is to increase the coding productivity of GPU programming by using the concept of Static Graphs. GPU capabilities have been increasing significantly in terms of performance and memory capacity. However, there are still some problems in terms of scalability and limitations to the amount of work that a GPU can perform at a time. To minimize the overhead associated with the launch of GPU kernels, as well as to maximize the use of GPU capacity, we have combined the new CUDA Graph API with the CUDA programming model (including CUDA math libraries) and the OpenACC programming model. We use as test cases two different, well-known and widely used problems in HPC and AI: the Conjugate Gradient method and the Particle Swarm Optimization. In the first test case (Conjugate Gradient) we focus on the integration of Static Graphs with CUDA. In this case, we are able to significantly outperform the NVIDIA reference code, reaching an acceleration of up to 11x thanks to a better implementation, which can benefit from the new CUDA Graph capabilities. In the second test case (Particle Swarm Optimization), we complement the OpenACC functionality with the use of CUDA Graph, achieving again accelerations of up to one order of magnitude, with average speedups ranging from 2x to 4x, and performance very close to a reference and optimized CUDA code. Our main target is to achieve a higher coding productivity model for GPU programming by using Static Graphs, which provides, in a very transparent way, a better exploitation of the GPU capacity. The combination of using Static Graphs with two of the current most important GPU programming models (CUDA and OpenACC) is able to reduce considerably the execution time w.r.t. the use of CUDA and OpenACC only, achieving accelerations of up to more than one order of magnitude. Finally, we propose an interface to incorporate the concept of Static Graphs into the OpenACC Specifications.

Hardness Measurements and Interface Behavior of SiC-B 4 C-Si Multiple Phase Particulate Composites Made with Melt Infiltration and Additive Manufacturing

Reaction-bonded SiC-B 4 C-Si ceramic composites were binder jet 3D-printed and subsequently pressureless-melt-infiltrated with molten Si. The addition of B 4 C aided the Si infiltration to produce a highly dense composite. The microstructures and phases of these composites were examined. The measured hardness values of each constituent with Vickers and nanoindentation matched the bulk values, and the macro-hardness values with Knoop and spherical indentation represented the bulk, composite hardness values of all three phases together, which was close to a rule of mixtures value. For particulate-based composites, this is a significant finding. The interfacial bonds of SiC and Si were imaged using scanning transmission electron microscopy to view intimacy, whereas the crack propagation was examined with carefully placed indents. This work demonstrated that pressureless melt infiltration with a reactive particle provides a method to shape non-wetting reaction-bonded ceramic composites with limited shrinkage and high density and provides insights into the mechanical behavior with numerous indentation techniques.

Beam Energy Dependence of the Linear and Mode-Coupled Flow Harmonics Using the a Multi-Phase Transport Model

In the framework of the A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model, the multi-particle azimuthal cumulant method is used to calculate the linear and mode-coupled contributions to the quadrangular flow harmonic (v4) and the mode-coupled response coefficient as functions of centrality in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 200, 39, 27 and 19.6 GeV. This study indicates that the linear and mode-coupled contributions to v4 are sensitive to beam energy change. Nevertheless, the correlations between different-order flow symmetry planes and the mode-coupled response coefficients show weak beam energy dependence. In addition, the presented results suggest that the experimental measurements that span a broad range of beam energies can be an additional constraint for the theoretical model calculations.

Two-moment Neutrino Flavor Transformation with Applications to the Fast Flavor Instability in Neutron Star Mergers

Abstract Multi-messenger astrophysics has produced a wealth of data with much more to come in the future. This enormous data set will reveal new insights into the physics of core-collapse supernovae, neutron star mergers, and many other objects where it is actually possible, if not probable, that new physics is in operation. To tease out different possibilities, we will need to analyze signals from photons, neutrinos, gravitational waves, and chemical elements. This task is made all the more difficult when it is necessary to evolve the neutrino component of the radiation field and associated quantum-mechanical property of flavor in order to model the astrophysical system of interest—a numerical challenge that has not been addressed to this day. In this work, we take a step in this direction by adopting the technique of angular-integrated moments with a truncated tower of dynamical equations and a closure, convolving the flavor-transformation with spatial transport to evolve the neutrino radiation quantum field. We show that moments capture the dynamical features of fast flavor instabilities in a variety of systems, although our technique is by no means a universal blueprint for solving fast flavor transformation. To evaluate the effectiveness of our moment results, we compare to a more precise particle-in-cell method. Based on our results, we propose areas for improvement and application to complementary techniques in the future.

Profiling microcraters using stereomicrographs.

The determination of the population, shape, and size of microcraters on lunar rocks enables space scientists to study cosmic erosion, survival times of rocks on the lunar surface, and the flux of primary cosmic particles. A graphical method of profiling and contouring microcraters on lunar rocks from a pair of stereomicrographs obtained by a scanning electron microscope was developed. The graphical method utilizes the simple geometry of photography generated by a parallel bundle of rays, orthogonal to the image plane.

The average motion of a charged particle in a dipole field

The numerical representation of the average motion of a charged particle trapped in a geomagnetic field is developed. An assumption is made of the conservation of the first two adiabatic invariants where integration is along a field line between mirror points. The averaged motion also involved the parameters defining the magnetic field line to which the particle is attached. Methods involved in obtaining the motion in the equatorial plane of model magnetospheres are based on Hamiltonian functions. The restrictions imposed by the special nature of the dipole field are defined.

Scanning radiometer for measurement of forward-scattered light to determine mean diameter of spray particles

A scanning radiometer is reported that measures forward-scattered light to determine the mean diameter of spray particles. An optical scanning method gives a continuous measurement of the light-scattering angle during spray nozzle tests. A method of calibration and a correction for background light are presented. Mean particle diameters of 10 to 500 micrometers can be measured.

Field funneling and range straggling in partially depleted silicon surface-barrier detectors

The effects of field funneling and range straggling have been quantitatively observed in the measurement of charge collected from alpha-particle tracks in silicon surface-barrier charged-particle detectors. The method described may be used for the straight-forward measurement of charge collection from heavy ions in these and other semiconductor devices.

Formation of the prelunar accretion disk

Considerations related to the angular momentum of the earth-moon system have led Ward and Cameron (1978) to the suggestion of a collisional origin of the moon. The required projectile would be about the mass of Mars (i.e., about 0.1 earth masses). The possibility has been considered that both the proto-earth and the projectile would be remnants of the formation of giant gaseous protoplanets. Processes of lunar formation studied take into account the viscous dissipation of an accretion disk. The present paper is concerned with the formation of the prelunar accretion disk. The hydrodynamics of a compressible viscous gas are simulated with the aid of the particle-in-cell method. The obtained results imply that the projectile is in an elliptical earth-crossing orbit.

Experimental and computational studies of unsteady viscous flows

This paper describes progress in validating incompressible Navier-Stokes codes using image-processed flow-field data. Solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations using a predictor/corrector scheme are compared directly with experimental data. A uniform asymptotic expansion is used as an initial condition in order to correctly capture the initial growth of the vortex sheet. With the aid of an experimental study in a tow tank using the particle streak visualization method, measured and computed velocity vectors are compared directly. Comparison of the velocity data with computations shows little effect of initial conditions and varying grid geometry on the predictive capabilities.

Galaxy tracers in N-body simulations

Using the method of smoothed particle hydrodynamics, we have modeled the formation of a compact group of galaxies with sufficient resolution to trace galaxies. Radiative cooling allows the baryons to dissipate their thermal energy and collapse to overdensities characteristic of real galaxies. With their cross section greatly reduced, these galaxy tracers remain distinct during cluster formation while their dark matter halos merge. In addition, the number density, the mass distribution function, and even the morphology of these objects are similar to those of observed galaxies. A viable population of galaxy tracers can be unambiguously defined.

Hydrodynamics of binary coalescence. 1: Polytropes with stiff equations of state

We performed a series of three-dimensional hydrodynamic calculations of binary coalescence using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The initial conditions are exact polytropic equilibrium configurations on the verge of dynamical instability. We consider synchronized equilbria only and concentrate on stiff equations of state, with adiabatic Gamma greater than 5/3. We assume that the polytropic constants (K identically equal to P/(rho(exp Gamma)) are the same for both components. These conditions apply well to models of neutron star binaries. Accordingly, we discuss our results in the context of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) project, and we calculate the emission of gravitational radiation in the quadruple approximation. The fully nonlinear development of the instability is followed using SPH until a new equilibrium configuration is reached by the system. We find that the properties of this final configuration depend sensitively on both the compressibility and mass ratio. An axisymmetric merged configuration is always produced when the adiabatic exponent Gamma approximately less than 2.3. As a consequence, the emission of gravitational radiation shuts off abruptly right after the onset of dynamical instability. In contrast, triaxial merged configurations are obtained when Gamma approximately greater than 2.3, and the system continues to emit gravitational waves after the final coalescence. Systems with mass ratios q not equal to 1 typically become dynamically unstable before the onset of mass transfer. Stable mass transfer from one neutron star to another in a close binary is therefore probably ruled out. For a mass ratio q approximately less than 0.5, however, dynamical mass transfer can temporarily retard the coalescence by causing a rapid reexpansion of the binary into a new, slightly eccentric but dynamically stable orbit. The maximum amplitude h(sub max) and peak luminosity L(sub max) of the gravitational waves emitted during the final coalescence are nearly independent of Gamma, but depend sensitively on the mass ratio q. The approximate scalings we find are h(sub max) varies as q(exp 2) and L(sub max) varies as q(exp 6) for q close to unity.

Impact on comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter

Three-dimensional numerical simulations of the impact of Comet Shoemaker - Levy 9 on Jupiter and the resulting vapor plume expansion were conducted using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. An icy body with a diameter of 2 km can penetrate to an altitude of -350 km (0 km = 1 bar) and most of the incident kinetic energy is transferred to the atmosphere between -100 km to -250 km. This energy is converted to potential energy of the resulting gas plume. The unconfined plume expands vertically and has a peak radiative power approximately equal to the total radiation from Jupiter's disk. The plume rises a few tens of atmospheric scale heights in approximately 10(exp 2) seconds. The rising plume reaches the altitude of approximately 3000 km, but no atmospheric gas is accelerated to the escape velocity (approximately 60 km/s).

Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9: Impact on Jupiter and plume evolution

The impact of fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter and the resulting vapor plume expansion are investigated by conducting three-dimensional numerical simulations using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. An icy body, representing the cometary fragments, with a velocity of 60 km/sec and a diameter of 2 km can penetrate to 350 km below the 1-bar pressure level in the atmosphere. Most of the initial kinetic energy of the fragment is transferred to the atmosphere between 50 km and 300 km below the 1-bar pressure level. The shock-heated atmospheric gas in the wake is totally dissociated and partially ionized. Scaling our SPH results to other sizes indicates that fragments larger than approximately 100 m in diameter can penetrate to below the visible cloud decks. The energy deposited in the atmosphere is explosively released in the upward expansion of the resulting plume. The plume preferentially expands upward rather than horizontally due to the density gradient of the ambient atmosphere. It rises greater than or equal to 10(exp 2) km in approximately 10(exp 2) sec. Eventually the total atmospheric mass ejected to above 1 bar is greater than or equal to 40 times the initial mass of the impactor. The plume temperature at a radius approximately 10(exp 3) km is greater than 10(exp 3) K for 10(exp 3) sec for a 2-km fragment. We predict that impact-induced plumes will be observable with the remote sensing instruments of the Galileo spacecraft. As the impact site rotates into the view of Earth some 20 min after the impact, the plume expansion will be observable using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and from visible and infrared instruments on groundbased telescopes. The rising plume reaches approximately 3000 km altitude in approximately 10 min and will be visible from Earth.
