Anisotropic effect of a magnetic field on the neutron spin resonance in FeSe

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the effect of a magnetic field on the neutron spin resonance (E r = 3.6 meV) of superconducting FeSe (T c = 9 K). While a field aligned along the in-plane direction broadens and suppresses the resonance, a c-axis aligned field does so much more efficiently, consistent with the anisotropic field-induced suppression of the superfluid density from the heat capacity measurements. These results suggest that the resonance in FeSe is associated with the superconducting electrons arising from orbital selective quasiparticle excitations between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces.

Magnetic, thermal, and electronic-transport properties of EuMg 2 Bi 2 single crystals

The trigonal compound EuMg 2 Bi 2 has recently been discussed in terms of its topological band properties. These are intertwined with its magnetic properties. In this paper detailed studies of the magnetic, thermal, and electronic-transport properties of EuMg 2 Bi 2 single crystals are presented. The Eu + 2 spins 7/2 in EuMg 2 Bi 2 exhibit an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at a temperature T N = 6.7 K, as previously reported. By analyzing the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility χ data below T N in terms of molecular-field theory (MFT), the AFM structure is inferred to be a c -axis helix, where the ordered moments in the hexagonal a b -plane layers are aligned ferromagnetically in the a b plane with a turn angle between the moments in adjacent moment planes along the c axis of ≈ 120 ° . An alternate but less likely magnetic structure is a planar structure with nearest-neighbor Eu spins aligned at ≈ 120 ° with respect to each other, where these ordered-moment layers are stacked along the c axis. The magnetic heat capacity exhibits a λ anomaly at T N with evidence of dynamic short-range magnetic fluctuations both above and below T N . The high- T limit of the magnetic entropy is close to the theoretical value for spins 7/2. The in-plane electrical resistivity ρ ( T ) data indicate metallic character with a mild and disorder-sensitive upturn below T min = 23 K. An anomalous rapid drop in ρ ( T ) on cooling below T N as found in zero field is replaced by a two-step decrease in magnetic fields. The ρ ( T ) measurements also reveal an additional transition below T N in applied fields of unknown origin that is not observed in the other measurements and may be associated with an incommensurate to commensurate AFM transition. The dependence of T N on the c -axis magnetic field H ⊥ was derived from the field-dependent χ ( T ) , C p ( T ) , and ρ ( T ) measurements. This T N ( H ⊥ ) was found to be consistent with the prediction of MFT for a c -axis helix with S = 7 / 2 and was used to generate a phase diagram in the H ⊥ – T plane.

Static and dynamic spin properties in the quantum triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ag 2 CoO 2

In Ag 2 CoO 2 , Co forms triangular lattice layers, which are separated by the metallic (Ag 2 ) block. The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements show that this material exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition at T N =17.5 K and the Weiss temperature (T Θ ) and the effective moment are -274 K and 1.62μ B , respectively, indicating that the Co ion carries spin (S) 1/2 and has a strongly frustrated state with T Θ /T N =15.7. A density functional theory calculation confirmed that the valence state of the Co ions is 2+ and the low-spin state with S=1/2 is realized at reduced on-site Coulomb interaction on Co. We performed elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments in a powder sample of Ag 2 CoO 2 . Although no noticeable magnetic Bragg peaks were observed below T N , distinct magnetic excitations were observed in the inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The excitations are consistent with those expected for the S=1/2 Heisenberg triangular lattice antiferromagnet. These results suggest that the ordered moment is reduced due to the quantum effect, which explains the absence of the magnetic Bragg peaks. Our results thus suggest that Ag 2 CoO 2 is a good candidate to realize a quantum Heisenberg triangular lattice antiferromagnet.

Soft-mode enhanced type-I superconductivity in LiPd 2 Ge

The synthesis, crystal structure, and physical properties (magnetization, resistivity, heat capacity) in combination with theoretical calculations of the electronic structure and phonon properties are reported for intermetallic compounds LiPd 2 X ( X = Si, Ge, and Sn). LeBail refinement of powder x-ray diffraction data confirms that all compounds belong to the Heusler family (space group $\textit{F m-3m}$, No. 225). The lattice parameter increases with atomic size of X , and its value varies from $\textit{a}$ = 5.9059(4) Å for LiPd 2 Si and $\textit{a}$ = 6.0082(3)Å for LiPd 2 Ge, to $\textit{a}$ = 6.2644(1) Å for LiPd 2 Sn. The first compound, LiPd 2 Si, has apparently not been previously reported. All measured quantities demonstrate that LiPd 2 Ge exhibits superconductivity below $T_c$ = 1.96 K and the normal- and superconducting-state data indicate that it is a weak-strength type-I superconductor ($C/γT_c$ = 1.38) with electron-phonon coupling constant $λ_{e–p}$ = (0.53–0.56). LiPd 2 Si and LiPd 2 Sn are not superconducting above 1.68 K. The experimental observations are supported by theoretical calculations which show that LiPd 2 Ge has the highest computed $λ_{e–p}$ and $T_c$ of the group. A strong softening of the acoustic phonon mode is calculated, and in the case of X = Ge and Sn, imaginary phonon frequencies were computed. In this work, the soft mode is most pronounced in the case of LiPd 2 Ge, which suggests its correlation with superconductivity.

Charge density wave with anomalous temperature dependence in UPt 2 Si 2

Using single-crystal neutron and x-ray diffraction, we discovered a charge density wave (CDW) below 320 K, which accounts for the long-sought origin of the heat capacity and resistivity anomalies in UPt 2 Si 2 . The modulation wave vector, Q mod , is intriguingly similar to the incommensurate wave vector of URu 2 Si 2 . Q mod shows an unusual temperature dependence, shifting from commensurate to incommensurate position upon cooling and becoming locked at aproximately (0.42 0 0) near 180 K. Furthermore, bulk measurements indicate a crossover toward a correlated coherent state around the same temperature, suggesting an interplay between the CDW and Kondo-lattice-like coherence before coexisting antiferromagnetic order sets in at T N =35 Κ.

Superconductivity in single crystals of ZrP 1.27 Se 0.73

Results are reported for single crystals of the PbFCl-type layered compound ZrP 1.27 Se 0.73 that were produced using the iodine vapor transport method. Electrical transport, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements reveal disordered metallic behavior and the occurrence of bulk superconductivity, with a transition temperature (T c ) of 7.1 K and an anisotropic orbitally limited upper critical field. 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance measurements provide additional microscopic information, where the line shape, Knight shift, and spin-lattice relaxation data are consistent with the superconductivity originating from the corrugated Zr-P(2c)/Se plane. This suggests that the superconductivity first forms in the corrugated plane and the bulk superconductivity eventually occurs via coupling between the square planar layers. These data also show that either there are multiple superconducting gaps or there is a single gap that does not fully open across the entire Fermi surface. Finally, these results clarify the superconducting state in this material and will enable further measurements that require single-crystal specimens.

Quasi-one-dimensional magnetism in the spin-12 antiferromagnet BaNa 2 Cu(VO 4 ) 2

Here, we report synthesis and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound BaNa 2 Cu ( VO 4 ) 2 . This orthovanadate has a centrosymmetric crystal structure, C 2 / c , where the magnetic Cu 2 + ions form spin chains. These chains are arranged in layers, with the chain direction changing by 62 ° between the two successive layers. Alternatively, the spin lattice can be viewed as anisotropic triangular layers upon taking the interchain interactions into consideration. Despite this potential structural complexity, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, electron spin resonance intensity, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift agree well with the uniform spin- 1 / 2 Heisenberg chain model with an intrachain coupling of J / k B ≃ 5.6 K. The saturation field obtained from the magnetic isotherm measurement consistently reproduces the value of J / k B . Further, the V 51 NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate mimics the one-dimensional character in the intermediate temperature range, whereas magnetic long-range order sets in below T N ≃ 0.25 K. The effective interchain coupling is estimated to be J ⊥ / k B ≃ 0.1 K. The theoretical estimation of exchange couplings using band-structure calculations reciprocate our experimental findings and unambiguously establish the one-dimensional character of the compound. Finally, the spin lattice of BaNa 2 Cu ( VO 4 ) 2 is compared with the chemically similar but not isostructural compound BaAg 2 Cu ( VO 4 ) 2 .

Magnetocapacitance effect and magnetoelectric coupling in type-II multiferroic HoFeWO 6

We have investigated the multiferroicity and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in HoFeWO 6 . With a noncentrosymmetric polar structure (space group Pna2 1 ) at room temperature, this compound shows an onset of electric polarization with an antiferromagnetic ordering at the Néel temperature (T N ) of 17.8 K. The magnetic properties of the polycrystalline samples were studied by DC and AC magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The metamagnetic behavior at low temperatures was found to be directly related to the dielectric properties of the compound. In particular, field-dependent measurements of capacitance show a magnetocapacitance (MC) effect with double-hysteresis loop behavior in direct correspondence with the magnetization. Our x-ray diffraction results show the Pna2 1 structure down to 8 K and suggest the absence of a structural phase transition across T N . Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe L 2,3 and Ho M 4,5 edges revealed the oxidation state of Fe and Ho cations to be 3+. Fe L 2,3 XMCD further shows that Fe 3+ cations are antiferromagnetically ordered in a noncollinear fashion with spins arranged 90° with respect to each other. Our findings show that HoFeWO 6 is a type-II multiferroic exhibiting a MC effect. Furthermore, the observed MC effect and the change in polarization by the magnetic field, as well as their direct correspondence with magnetization, further support the strong ME coupling in this compound.

Ab initio anharmonic thermodynamic properties of cubic Ca Si O 3 perovskite

We present an ab initio study of the thermodynamic properties of cubic CaSiO 3 perovskite (CaPv) over the pressure and temperature range of the Earth's lower mantle. We compute the anharmonic phonon dispersions throughout the Brillouin zone by utilizing the phonon quasiparticle approach, which characterizes the intrinsic temperature dependence of phonon frequencies and, in principle, captures full anharmonicity. Such temperature-dependent phonon dispersions are used to calculate ab initio free energy in the thermodynamic limit (N → ∞) within the framework of the phonon gas model. Accurate free energy calculations enable us to investigate cubic CaPv's thermodynamic properties, e.g., thermal expansivity, Grüneisen parameter, bulk modulus, heat capacity and thermal equation of state, where anharmonic effects are demonstrated. Furthermore, the present methodology provides an important theoretical approach for exploring phase boundaries, thermodynamic, and thermoelastic properties of strongly anharmonic materials at high pressures and temperatures.

Quasi-one-dimensional uniform spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet KNaCuP 2 O 7 probed by P 31 and Na 23 NMR

Here we present the structural and magnetic properties of KNaCuP 2 O 7 investigated via x-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat, and P 31 and Na 23 NMR measurements and complementary electronic structure calculations. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and P 31 NMR shift could be modeled very well by the uniform spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain model with a nearest-neighbor interaction J / k B ≃ 58.7 K . The corresponding mapping using first-principles electronic structure calculations leads to J DFT / k B ≃ 59 K with negligibly small interchain couplings, further confirming that the system is indeed a one-dimensional uniform spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The diverging trend of NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates ( 1 / T 1 31 and 1 / T 1 23 ) implies the onset of a magnetic long-range ordering at around T N ≃ 1 K . From the value of T N , the average interchain coupling is estimated to be J ' / k B ≃ 0.28 K . Moreover, the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates show the dominant contributions from uniform ( q = 0 ) and staggered ( q = ± π / a ) spin fluctuations in the high- and low-temperature regimes, respectively, mimicking one-dimensionality of the spin lattice. We have also demonstrated that 1 / T 1 31 in high temperatures varies linearly with 1 / H , reflecting the effect of spin diffusion on the dynamic susceptibility. The temperature-dependent unit cell volume could be described well using the Debye approximation with a Debye temperature of Θ D ≃ 294 K , consistent with the heat capacity data.

Quantum criticality in Ce 1 - x Sm x Co In 5

Motivated by the possibility of observing the coexistence between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity in heavy-fermion Ce 1-x Sm x CoIn 5 alloys, we studied how the samarium substitution on the cerium site affects the magnetic field-tuned-quantum criticality of stoichiometric CeCoIn 5 by performing specific heat and resistivity measurements. By applying an external magnetic field, we have observed Fermi-liquid to non-Fermi-liquid crossovers in the temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat normalized by temperature and of the resistivity. We obtained the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) by extrapolating to zero temperature the temperature-magnetic field dependence at which the crossovers take place. Furthermore, a scaling analysis of the electronic specific heat is used to confirm the existence of the QCP. We have found that the magnitude of the magnetic-field-induced QCP decreases with increasing samarium concentration. Our analysis of heat capacity and resistivity data reveals a zero-field QCP for x cr ≈0.15, which falls inside the region where Sm ions antiferromagnetism and superconductivity coexist.

Fingerprinting triangular-lattice antiferromagnet by excitation gaps

CeCd 3 As 3 is a rare-earth triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with large inter-layer separation. Here, our field-dependent heat capacity measurements at dilution fridge temperatures allow us to trace the field-evolution of the spin-excitation gaps throughout the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions. The distinct gap evolution places strong constraints on the microscopic pseudo-spin model, which, in return, yields a close quantitative description of the gap behavior. This analysis provides crucial insights into the nature of the magnetic state of CeCd 3 As 3 , with a certainty regarding its stripe order and low-energy model parameters that sets a compelling paradigm for exploring and understanding the rapidly growing family of the rare-earth-based triangular-lattice systems

Anomalous electrical transport behavior in the vicinity of the first-order magnetostructural transition in the giant magnetocaloric Gd 4 ScGe 4

Here, magnetic, specific heat, and electrical transport measurements of Gd 4 ScGe 4 single crystals reveal sharp, discontinuous, nearly anhysteretic first-order magnetostructural transformation at $T_C$ = 63 K. The electrical resistivity exhibits two distinct regions where it increases with decreasing temperature: between $T_C$ and 120 K, as well as below 3 K; electronic transport remains conventionally metallic at all other measured temperatures, up to 325 K. The dispersion of charge carriers due to electron-paramagnon scattering is the likely reason for the observed anomalous transport above $T_C$. Additionally, the existence of intermediate lattice states near the transition recognized by the spike in the interslab Ge-Ge distances is expected to reduce the mean free path of the electrons contributing to the unusual behavior of the electrical resistivity between $T_C$ and 120 K. Beyond conventional electronic and lattice terms, the third component of likely magnetic origin contributes to the low-temperature heat capacity; the presence of spin waves may be responsible for the increased electron-magnon scattering below 3 K. Minor magnetocrystalline anisotropy is observed with the b axis as the easy magnetization axis in Gd 4 ScGe 4 . A negative deviation from linearity in the temperature dependence of the inverse magnetic susceptibility is detected below 150 K.

A-type antiferromagnetic order in semiconducting EuMg 2 Sb 2 single crystals

Eu-based Zintl-phase materials EuA 2 Pn 2 (A = Mg, In, Cd, Zn; Pn = Bi, Sb, As, P) have generated significant recent interest owing to the complex interplay of magnetism and band topology. Here, we investigated the crystallographic, magnetic, and electronic properties of the layered Zintlphase single crystals of EuMg 2 Sb 2 with the trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 crystal structure (space group $P\bar{3}m1$). Electrical resistivity measurements complemented with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations find an activated behavior with intrinsic conductivity at high temperatures indicating a semiconducting electronic ground state with a narrow energy gap of 370 meV. Magnetic susceptibility and zero-field heat capacity measurements indicate that the compound undergoes antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at the Néel temperature T N = 8.0(2) K. Here, zero-field neutron-diffraction measurements reveal that the AFM ordering is A-type where the Eu spins (Eu 2+ , S = 7/2) arranged in ab-plane layers are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane and the Eu spins in adjacent layers are aligned antiferromagnetically. Eu-moment reorientation within the ab planes in the trigonal AFM domains associated with a very weak inplane magnetic anisotropy is also evident below T N at low fields < 0.05 T. Although isostructural semimetallic EuMg 2 Bi 2 is reported to host Dirac surface states, the observation of narrow-gap semiconducting behavior in EuMg 2 Sb 2 implies a strong role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in tuning the electronic states of these materials. Our DFT studies also suggest, besides the SOC, the more electronegative and smaller Sb than Bi shifts the low-lying conduction bands along the Γ-A direction to higher energy, resulting in an indirect bulk band gap between the Γ and M points for EuMg 2 Sb 2 .

Anharmonic thermodynamic properties and phase boundary across the postperovskite transition in MgSi O 3

To address the effects of lattice anharmonicity across the perovskite to postperovskite transition in MgSiO 3 , we conduct calculations using the phonon quasiparticle (PHQ) approach. The PHQ is based on abinitio molecular dynamics and, in principle, captures full anharmonicity. Free energies in the thermodynamic limit (N → ∞) are computed using temperature-dependent quasiparticle dispersions within the phonon gas model. Systematic results on anharmonic thermodynamic properties and phase boundary are reported. Both the local density approximation and the generalized gradient approximation calculations are performed to provide confident constraints on these properties. Anharmonic effects are demonstrated by comparing results with those obtained using the quasiharmonic approximation (QHA). The inadequacy of the QHA is indicated by its overestimation of thermal expansivity and thermodynamic Grüneisen parameter and its converged isochoric heat capacity in the high-temperature limit. The PHQ phase boundary has a Clapeyron slope (dP/dT) that increases with temperature. This result contrasts with the nearly zero curvature of the QHA phase boundary. Anharmonicity bends the phase boundary to lower temperatures at high pressures. Implications for the double-crossing of the phase boundary by the mantle geotherm are discussed.

Strongly correlated itinerant magnetism near superconductivity in NiTa 4 Se 8

Metallic ferromagnets with strongly interacting electrons often exhibit remarkable electronic phases such as ferromagnetic superconductivity, complex spin textures, and nontrivial topology. Here, in this report, we discuss the synthesis of a layered magnetic metal NiTa 4 Se 8 (or Ni 1/4 TaSe 2 ) with a Curie temperature of 58 Kelvin. Magnetization data and density functional theory calculations indicate that the nickel atoms host uniaxial ferromagnetic order of about 0.7µ B per atom, while an even smaller moment is generated in the itinerant tantalum conduction electrons. Strong correlations are evident in flat bands near the Fermi level, a high heat capacity coefficient, and a high Kadowaki-Woods ratio. Density functional theory calculations suggest that electron and hole Fermi surfaces in the ferromagnetic phase are associated with opposite spin polarization. When the system is diluted of magnetic ions, the samples become superconducting below about 2 Kelvin. We discuss possible mechanisms for superconductivity in this family.

Magnetic frustration driven by conduction carrier blocking in Nd 2 Co 0.85 Si 2.88

The intermetallic compound Nd 2 Co 0.85 Si 2.88 having a triangular lattice could be synthesized in single phase only with defect crystal structure. Investigation through different experimental techniques indicate the presence of two magnetic transitions in the system. As verified experimentally and theoretically, the high-temperature transition $T_H$ ~ 140 K is associated with the development of ferromagnetic interaction between itinerant Co moments, whereas the low-temperature transition at $T_L$ ~ 6.5 K is due to the coupling among Nd–4$\textit{f}$ and Co–3$\textit{d}$ moments, which is antiferromagnetic in nature. Detailed studies of temperature-dependent dc magnetic susceptibility, field dependence of isothermal magnetization, nonequilibrium dynamical behavior, viz., magnetic relaxation, aging effect, magnetic-memory effect, and temperature dependence of heat capacity, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, suggest that the ground state is magnetically frustrated spin glass in nature, having competing magnetic interactions of equivalent energies. DFT results further reveal that the 3$\textit{d}$/5$\textit{d}$-conduction carriers are blocked in the system and act as a barrier for the 4$\textit{f}$–4$\textit{f}$ RKKY interactions, resulting in spin frustration. Presence of vacancy defects in the crystal are also conducive to the spin frustration. This is an unique mechanism of magnetic frustration, not emphasized so far in any of the ternary $R_2TX_3$ ($\textit{R}$ = rare earth, $\textit{T}$ = transition elements, and $\textit{X}$ = Si, Ge, In) type compounds. Due to the competing character of the itinerant 3$\textit{d}$ and localized 4$\textit{f}$ moments, the compound exhibits anomalous field dependence of magnetic coercivity. Further, the system also exhibits a considerable magnetic entropy change of –Δ$S_M$ ~ 13.3 J/kg K with a relative cooling power (RCP) of 220 J/kg and adiabatic temperature change $ΔT_{\text{ad}}$ of 6 K for magnetic field change of 70 kOe.

Anisotropic magnetism and electronic structure of trigonal EuAl 2 Ge 2 single crystals

Understanding the interplay between magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom is of profound recent interest in different Eu-based magnetic topological materials. Here, we studied the magnetic and electronic properties of the layered Zintl-phase compound EuAl 2 Ge 2 crystallizing in the trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 -type structure. We report zero-field neutron diffraction, temperature T - and magnetic-field H-dependent magnetic susceptibility χ(T, H), isothermal magnetization M(T, H), heat capacity C p (T, H), and electrical resistivity ρ(T, H) measurements, together with T-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements complemented with first-principle calculations. EuAl 2 Ge 2 undergoes second-order A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below T N = 27.5(5) K, with the Eu moments (Eu 2+ , S = 7/2) aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane while these layers are stacked antiferromagnetically along the c axis. The critical fields at which all moments become parallel to the field are 37.5(5) and 52.5(5) kOe for H ∥ ab and H ∥ c, respectively. The H = 0 magnetic structure consists of trigonal AFM domains associated with ab-plane magnetic anisotropy and a field-induced reorientation of the Eu spins in the domains is also evident at T = 2 K below the critical field H c1 = 2.5(1) kOe. The ρ(T) measurements reveal metallic behavior transforming into a slight resistivity increase on cooling towards T N . A pronounced loss of spin-disorder scattering is observed below T N . The ARPES results show that EuAl 2 Ge 2 is metallic both above and below T N , and the Fermi surface is anisotropic with two hole pockets at the zone center and one small electron pocket at each M point. In the AFM phase, we directly observe folded bands in ARPES due to the doubling of the magnetic unit cell along the c axis with an enhancement of quasiparticle weight due to the complex change in the coupling between the magnetic moments and itinerant electrons on cooling below T N . The observed electronic structure is well reproduced by first-principle calculations, which also predict the presence of nontrivial electronic states near the Fermi level in the AFM phase with Z 2 topological numbers 1;(000)
