Conversion of (NH 4 ) 2 [ReF 6 ] into ReO 2 mixed phases: A thermal analysis study

We report the thermal behavior of (NH 4 ) 2 [ReF 6 ] was evaluated in an alumina crucible using simultaneous thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in an argon atmosphere. The TGA of (NH 4 ) 2 [ReF 6 ] is characterized by a single step decomposition while the DSC exhibits two exothermic peaks. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analyses of the decomposition products show the presence of a mixed ReO 2 phase. The formation of ReO2 is driven by the reaction of (NH 4 ) 2 [ReF 6 ] with Al 2 O 3 at the grain boundary of the alumina crucible. XRD peak broadenings due to the combined effect of crystallite size and lattice strain were evaluated using both Scherrer and Williamson-Hall methods.

Syntheses, solution behavior, and computational bond length analyses of trifluoromethyl and perfluoroethyl cuprate salts

Heteroleptic cuprate salts of the form [X-Cu-Y][(SIMes) 2 Cu] (SIMes = 1,3-dimesitylimidazolin-2-ylidene, X and Y = permutations of Cl, CF 3 , C 2 F 5 ) were generated by equilibrating mixtures of [(SIMes)Cu-X] and [(SIMes)Cu-Y] in CD 2 Cl 2 solvent. Here, the solubility features of the cuprates relative to the neutral species permitted the structural characterizations of new cuprates, including the first example of a mixed fluoroalkylated cuprate [(CF 3 )Cu(C 2 F 5 )][(SIMes) 2 Cu]. Computational studies (DFT and CCSD(T)) of fluoroalkylated cuprates generate Cu-C distances that are shorter than those in hydrocarbon analogues – a trend that in some cases may conflict with crystallographically determined values.

Radiofluorination of oxazole-carboxamides for preclinical PET neuroimaging of GSK-3

Glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3) is an enzyme that is dysregulated in oncology neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation and several mental health illnesses. As such, GSK-3 is a long-sought after target for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and therapeutic intervention. Herein, we report on the development and radiofluorination of two oxazole-4- carboxamides, including one bearing a non-activated aromatic ring. Both compounds demonstrated excellent selectivity in a kinase screen and inhibit GSK-3 with high affinity. [ 18 F]OCM-49 was synthesized from [ 18 F]fluoride using a copper-mediated reaction of an aryl boronic acid precursor, while [ 18 F]OCM-50 used a trimethylammonium triflate precursor, and both radiotracers were translated for preclinical PET imaging in rodents. Due to superior radiochemical yields and brain uptake (peak standardized uptake value of ~2.0), [ 18 F]OCM-50 was further evaluated in non-human primate and also showed good brain uptake and rapid clearance. Finally, further studies to consider clinical translation of both radiotracers are underway.

Synthesis and characterization of the dinuclear cobalt(III) complex: [(C 2 F 5 ) 3 Co(μ-F)] 2 2–

Here, reaction of the versatile tris(perfluoroethyl) cobalt(III) precursor [fac-(MeCN) 3 Co(C 2 F 5 ) 3 ] with [NMe 4 ]F and [PPh 4 ]Cl in THF formed the unexpected cobalt(III) bridging fluoride dimer ([(C 2 F 5 ) 3 Co(μ-F)] 2 2– . The new fluoro-organometallic cobalt(III) complex was characterized by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, and by computational methods. In the strongly coordinating solvent MeCN, ([(C 2 F 5 ) 3 Co(μ-F)] 2 2– exhibits dynamic processes on the NMR timescale which are consistent with solvent coordination. However, in the weakly coordinating solvent CH 2 Cl 2 , a more static structure is observed suggesting that the dimer retains its structure in solution state. An electrochemical analysis of ([(C 2 F 5 ) 3 Co(μ-F)] 2 2– was performed, and the data are compared to previously reported cobalt(III) perfluoroethyl complexes.

Transformation of brucine into trifluoromethyl neobrucine using the homoleptic nickel catalyst [Ni(CF3)4]2-

The homoleptic trifluoromethyl nickel complex [Ni(CF3)4]2- catalyzes a stereoselective trifluoromethylation of brucine with Umemoto II reagent. The trifluoromethylation process proceeds with concomitant isomerization of its alkenyl double bond leading to a trifluoromethylated neobrucine-like derivative. A minor difunctionalization product was also detected from the reaction mixture, consistent with a radical addition process that is occurring in parallel. Stoichiometric reactions between the nickel(II) catalyst precursor and brucine led to no reaction. However, a stochiometric reaction with a high-valent nickel(IV) complex formed trifluoromethylated neobrucine, implicating its intermediacy.

Correlated Anion Disorder in Heteroanionic Cubic TiOF 2

Resolving anion configurations in heteroanionic materials is crucial for understanding and controlling their properties. For anion-disordered oxyfluorides, conventional Bragg diffraction cannot fully resolve the anionic structure, necessitating alternative structure determination methods. We have investigated the anionic structure of anion-disordered cubic (ReO 3 -type) TiOF 2 using X-ray pair distribution function (PDF), 19 F MAS NMR analysis, density functional theory (DFT), cluster expansion modeling, and genetic-algorithm structure prediction. Our computational data predict short-range anion ordering in TiOF 2 , characterized by predominant cis-[O 2 F 4 ] titanium coordination, resulting in correlated anion disorder at longer ranges. To validate our predictions, we generated partially disordered supercells using genetic-algorithm structure prediction and computed simulated X-ray PDF data and 19 F MAS NMR spectra, which we compared directly to experimental data. To construct our simulated 19 F NMR spectra, we derived new transformation functions for mapping calculated magnetic shieldings to predicted magnetic chemical shifts in titanium (oxy)fluorides, obtained by fitting DFT-calculated magnetic shieldings to previously published experimental chemical shift data for TiF 4 . We find good agreement between our simulated and experimental data, which supports our computationally predicted structural model and demonstrates the effectiveness of complementary experimental and computational techniques in resolving anionic structure in anion-disordered oxyfluorides. From additional DFT calculations, we predict that increasing anion disorder makes lithium intercalation more favorable by, on average, up to 2 eV, highlighting the significant effect of variations in short-range order on the intercalation properties of anion-disordered materials.

Revealing the Mechanism Behind Sudden Capacity Loss in Lithium Metal Batteries

Rechargeable Li-metal batteries (LMBs) are attractive energy storage candidates for electric vehicles (EVs) because they offer higher energy density than batteries built with intercalation electrodes. However, one of the main barriers to the commercial deployment of LMBs has been their relatively short cycle life. Re-designing the electrolyte system shows promise in achieving acceptable cycle life, but even so, the resulting cells display a challenging end-of-life (EOL) behavior: a sudden capacity loss. Herein, we report a new method for analyzing voltage profiles during cycling to distinguish between the capacity loss originating from the loss of cathode capacity vs growth in cell resistance. Further, this analysis reveals that sudden capacity loss was preceded by acceleration in the rate of growth of cell resistance, and cycling of multiple cells showed that this phenomenon is sensitive to the initial quantity of electrolyte in the cells. In contrast, the cathode capacity degraded at a constant rate independent of the electrolyte quantity. Combining this evidence with post-analysis of harvested electrolyte and electrodes, we conclude that neither the loss of active lithium nor the loss of active cathode material was the primary source of sudden capacity loss; instead, consumption and decomposition of electrolyte causes the drastic capacity loss at EOL.

Daikin Advanced Lithium Ion Battery Technology - High Voltage Electrolyte

An evaluation of high voltage electrolytes which contain fluorochemicals as either co-solvents or additives has been completed. The project objective was to identify a cell chemistry and electrolyte formulation which is capable of operating at 4.6 V. Stable cycle performance has been demonstrated in LiNi0.50Mn0.30Co0.20O2 (NMC532)/Artificial Graphite pouch cells to 4.6 V, with a discharge capacity retention greater than 80% after 300 cycles. A multitude of physical and chemical changes between 4.2 and 4.6V were investigated, with the goal of correlating identified degradation mechanisms with premature cell failure.
