Dual-Ion Intercalation and High Volumetric Capacitance in a Two-Dimensional Non-Porous Coordination Polymer

Intercalation is a promising ion-sorption mechanism for enhancing the energy density of electrochemical capacitors (ECs) because it offers enhanced access to the electrochemical surface area. It requires a rapid transport of ions in and out of a host material, and it must occur without phase transformations. Materials that fulfil these requirements are rare; those that do intercalate almost exclusively cations. Herein, we show that Ni3(benzenehexathiol) (Ni 3 BHT), a non-porous two-dimensional (2D) layered coordination polymer (CP), intercalates both cations and anions with a variety of charges. Whereas cation intercalation is pseudocapacitive, anions intercalate in a purely capacitive fashion. The excellent EC performance of Ni3BHT provides a general basis for investigating similar dual-ion intercalation mechanisms in the large family of non-porous 2D CPs.

Intercalation-Activated Layered MoO 3 Nanobelts as Biodegradable Nanozymes for Tumor-Specific Photo-Enhanced Catalytic Therapy

The existence of natural van der Waals gaps in layered materials allows them to be easily intercalated with varying guest species, offering an appealing strategy to optimize their physicochemical properties and application performance. Herein, we report the activation of layered MoO 3 nanobelts via aqueous intercalation as an efficient biodegradable nanozyme for tumor-specific photo-enhanced catalytic therapy. In this work, the long MoO 3 nanobelts are grinded and then intercalated with Na + and H 2 O to obtain the short Na + /H 2 O co-intercalated MoO 3–x (NH–MoO 3–x ) nanobelts. In contrast to the inert MoO 3 nanobelts, the NH–MoO 3–x nanobelts exhibit excellent enzyme-mimicking catalytic activity for generation of reactive oxygen species, which can be further enhanced by the photothermal effect under a 1064 nm laser irradiation. Thus, after bovine serum albumin modification, the NH–MoO 3–x nanobelts can efficiently kill cancer cells in vitro and eliminate tumors in vivo facilitating with 1064 nm laser irradiation.

Simultaneous Control of Pore-Space Partition and Charge Distribution in Multi-Modular Metal–Organic Frameworks

Here we report here a strategy for making anionic pacs type porous materials by combining pore space partition with charge reallocation. The method uses the first negatively charged pore partition ligand (2,5,8-tri-(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4,6,7,9-hexaazaphenalene, H-tph) that simultaneously enables pore partition and charge reallocation. Over two dozen anionic pacs materials have been made to demonstrate their excellent chemical stability and a high degree of tunability. Notably, Ni 3 -bdt-tph (bdt=1,4-benzeneditetrazolate) exhibits month-long water stability, while CoV-bdt-tph sets a new benchmark for C 2 H 2 storage capacity under ambient conditions for ionic MOFs. In addition to tunable in-framework modules, we show feasibility to tune the type and concentration of extra-framework counter cations and their influence on both stability and capability to separate industrial C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 and C 6 H 6 /C 6 H 12 mixtures.

An Efficient Rechargeable Aluminium–Amine Battery Working Under Quaternization Chemistry

Rechargeable aluminium (Al) batteries (RABs) have long-been pursued due to the high sustainability and three-electron-transfer properties of Al metal. However, limited redox chemistry is available for rechargeable Al batteries, which restricts the exploration of cathode materials. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient Al–amine battery based on a quaternization reaction, in which nitrogen (radical) cations (R 3 N .+ or R 4 N + ) are formed to store the anionic Al complex. The reactive aromatic amine molecules further oligomerize during cycling, inhibiting amine dissolution into the electrolyte. Consequently, the constructed Al–amine battery exhibits a high reversible capacity of 135 mAh g -1 along with a superior cycling life (4000 cycles), fast charge capability and a high energy efficiency of 94.2 %. Moreover, the Al–amine battery shows excellent stability against self-discharge, far beyond conventional Al–graphite batteries. Our findings pave an avenue to advance the chemistry of RABs and thus battery performance.

Cylindrical C 96 Fullertubes: A Highly Active Metal-Free O 2 -Reduction Electrocatalyst

A new isolation protocol was recently reported for highly purified metallic Fullertubes D 5h -C 90 , D 3d -C 96 , and D 5d -C 100 , which exhibit unique electronic features. Here, we report the oxygen reduction electrocatalytic behavior of C 60 , C 70 (spheroidal fullerenes), and C 90 , C 96 , and C 100 (tubular fullerenes) using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. C 96 (a metal-free catalyst) displayed remarkable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, with an onset potential of 0.85 V and a halfway potential of 0.75 V, which are close to the state-of-the-art Pt/C benchmark catalyst values. Here we achieved an excellent power density of 0.75 W cm −2 using C 96 as a modified cathode in a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell, comparable to other recently reported efficient metal-free catalysts. Combined band structure (experimentally calculated) and free-energy (DFT) investigations show that both favorable energy-level alignment active catalytic sites on the carbon cage are responsible for the superior activity of C 96 .

Structural and Dynamic Analysis of Sulphur Dioxide Adsorption in a Series of Zirconium-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks

We report reversible high capacity adsorption of SO 2 in robust Zr-based metal–organic framework (MOF) materials. Zr-bptc (H 4 bptc=biphenyl-3,3',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid) shows a high SO 2 uptake of 6.2 mmol g -1 at 0.1 bar and 298 K, reflecting excellent capture capability and removal of SO 2 at low concentration (2500 ppm). Dynamic breakthrough experiments confirm that the introduction of amine, atomically-dispersed Cu II or heteroatomic sulphur sites into the pores enhance the capture of SO 2 at low concentrations. The captured SO 2 can be converted quantitatively to a pharmaceutical intermediate, aryl N-aminosulfonamide, thus converting waste to chemical values. In situ X-ray diffraction, infrared micro-spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering enable the visualisation of the binding domains of adsorbed SO 2 molecules and host–guest binding dynamics in these materials at the atomic level. Refinement of the pore environment plays a critical role in designing efficient sorbent materials.

Salt‐in‐Salt Reinforced Carbonate Electrolyte for Li Metal Batteries

Abstract The instability of carbonate electrolyte with metallic Li greatly limits its application in high‐voltage Li metal batteries. Here, a “salt‐in‐salt” strategy is applied to boost the LiNO 3 solubility in the carbonate electrolyte with Mg(TFSI) 2 carrier, which enables the inorganic‐rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) for excellent Li metal anode performance and also maintains the cathode stability. In the designed electrolyte, both NO 3 − and PF 6 − anions participate in the Li + ‐solvent complexes, thus promoting the formation of inorganic‐rich SEI. Our designed electrolyte has achieved a superior Li CE of 99.7 %, enabling the high‐loading NCM811||Li (4.5 mAh cm −2 ) full cell with N/P ratio of 1.92 to achieve 84.6 % capacity retention after 200 cycles. The enhancement of LiNO 3 solubility by divalent salts is universal, which will also inspire the electrolyte design for other metal batteries.

New Insights into Physical Aging-Induced Structure Evolution in Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes

Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes offer the best available combination of scalable economical processability with excellent separation performance. Physical aging of CMS membranes causes pore structure changes over time that affect CMS membrane performance. To provide fundamental insights into the structure evolution in CMS membranes during physical aging, a combined dual-mode sorption and transport model is used in this study to characterize the diffusion coefficients of gas molecules in fresh and 7-day vacuum aged CMS membranes. Further, the results show physical aging of CMS membrane is primarily “diffusion related” and such aging behavior simultaneously causes ultramicropore changes in the continuous phase and Langmuir phase of CMS membrane. The new insights offered in this study suggest strategies to control the physical aging of CMS membranes and even use it as a valuable tool to tune the separation performance of CMS membranes for demanding gas separations.

Quantifying the Influence of Covalent Metal‐Ligand Bonding on Differing Reactivity of Trivalent Uranium and Lanthanide Complexes

Abstract Qualitative differences in the reactivity of trivalent lanthanide and actinide complexes have long been attributed to differences in covalent metal‐ligand bonding, but there are few examples where thermodynamic aspects of this relationship have been quantified, especially with U 3+ and in the absence of competing variables. Here we report a series of dimeric phosphinodiboranate complexes with trivalent f ‐metals that show how shorter‐than‐expected U−B distances indicative of increased covalency give rise to measurable differences in solution deoligomerization reactivity when compared to isostructural complexes with similarly sized lanthanides. These results, which are in excellent agreement with supporting DFT and QTAIM calculations, afford rare experimental evidence concerning the measured effect of variations in metal‐ligand covalency on the reactivity of trivalent uranium and lanthanide complexes.

High–Capacity Splitting of Mono– and Dibranched Hexane Isomers by a Robust Zinc–Based Metal–Organic Framework

High-efficiency separation of C 6 alkanes, particularly the mono- and dibranched isomers by using porous solids, is of paramount significance in the petrochemical industry and, remains a daunting challenge. In this work, we report the complete separation of linear/monobranched hexanes from their dibranched isomers through selective size-exclusion by a microporous MOF, Zn-tcpt (H3tcpt=2,4,6-tris(4-carboxyphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine), with a two-fold interpenetrated structure of hms nets. Importantly, its adsorption capacity and selectivity are notably higher than those of the previously reported adsorbents that can split mono- and dibranched alkane isomers. Dynamic breakthrough measurements verify the excellent separation of C 6 alkane isomers by Zn-tcpt, and the size-exclusion based separation mechanism has been confirmed by ab initio materials modeling. Furthermore, the high-efficiency separation of alkane isomers by Zn-tcpt can be attributed to its optimal pore dimensions as well as high porosity.

Metal-like Charge Transport in PEDOT(OH) Films by Post-processing Side Chain Removal from a Soluble Precursor Polymer

Herein, a route to produce highly electrically conductive doped hydroxymethyl functionalized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films, termed PEDOT(OH) with metal-like charge transport properties using a fully solution processable precursor polymer is reported. Further, this is achieved via an ester-functionalized PEDOT derivative [PEDOT(EHE)] that is soluble in a range of solvents with excellent film-forming ability. PEDOT(EHE) demonstrates moderate electrical conductivities of 20–60 S cm -1 and hopping-like (i.e., thermally activated) transport when doped with ferric tosylate (FeTos 3 ). Upon basic hydrolysis of PEDOT(EHE) films, the electrically insulative side chains are cleaved and washed from the polymer film, leaving a densified film of PEDOT(OH). These films, when optimally doped, reach electrical conductivities of ≈1200 S cm -1 and demonstrate metal-like (i.e., thermally deactivated and band-like) transport properties and high stability at comparable doping levels.

Structurally Defined Water‐Soluble Metallofullerene Derivatives towards Biomedical Applications

Abstract Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) are excellent carriers of rare‐earth element (REE) ions in biomedical applications because they preclude the release of toxic metal ions. However, existing approaches to synthesize water‐soluble EMF derivatives yield mixtures that inhibit precise drug design. Here we report the synthesis of metallobuckytrio (MBT), a three‐buckyball system, as a modular platform to develop structurally defined water‐soluble EMF derivatives with ligands by choice. Demonstrated with PEG ligands, the resulting water‐soluble MBTs show superb biocompatibility. The Gd MBTs exhibit superior T 1 relaxivity than typical Gd complexes, potentially superseding current clinical MRI contrast agents in both safety and efficiency. The Lu MBTs generated reactive oxygen species upon light irradiation, showing promise as photosensitizers. With their modular nature to incorporate other ligands, we anticipate the MBT platform to open new paths towards bio‐specific REE drugs.

Regulating Cation Interactions for Zero–Strain and High–Voltage P2–type Na 2/3 Li 1/6 Co 1/6 Mn 2/3 O 2 Layered Oxide Cathodes of Sodium–Ion Batteries

Deep sodium extraction/insertion of sodium cathodes usually causes undesired Jahn–Teller distortion and phase transition, both of which will reduce structural stability and lead to poor long-cycle reliability. Here we report a zero-strain P2- Na 2/3 Li1/6Co 1/6 Mn 2/3 O 2 cathode, in which the lithium/cobalt substitution contributes to reinforcing the host structure by reducing the Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ redox, mitigating the Jahn–Teller distortion, and minimizing the lattice change. 94.5 % of Na + in the unit structure can be reversibly cycled with a charge cut-off voltage of 4.5 V (vs. Na + /Na). Impressively, a solid-solution reaction without phase transitions is realized upon deep sodium (de)intercalation, which poses a minimal volume deviation of 0.53 %. Finally, it attains a high discharge capacity of 178 mAh g –1 , a high energy density of 534 Wh kg –1 , and excellent capacity retention of 95.8 % at 1 C after 250 cycles.

Toughening Brittle Bio‐P3HB with Synthetic P3HB of Engineered Stereomicrostructures

Abstract Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB), a biologically produced, biodegradable natural polyester, exhibits excellent thermal and barrier properties but suffers from mechanical brittleness, largely limiting its applications. Here we report a mono‐material product design strategy to toughen stereoperfect, brittle bio or synthetic P3HB by blending it with stereomicrostructurally engineered P3HB. Through tacticity ([ mm ] from 0 to 100 %) and molecular weight ( M n to 788 kDa) tuning, high‐performance synthetic P3HB materials with tensile strength to ≈30 MPa, fracture strain to ≈800 %, and toughness to 126 MJ m −3 (>110× tougher than bio‐P3HB) have been produced. Physical blending of the brittle P3HB with such P3HB in 10 to 90 wt % dramatically enhances its ductility from ≈5 % to 95–450 % and optical clarity from 19 % to 85 % visible light transmittance while maintaining desirably high elastic modulus (>1 GPa), tensile strength (>35 MPa), and melting temperature (160–170 °C). This P3HB‐toughening‐P3HB methodology departs from the traditional approach of incorporating chemically distinct components to toughen P3HB, which hinders chemical or mechanical recycling, highlighting the potential of the mono‐material product design solely based on biodegradable P3HB to deliver P3HB materials with diverse performance properties.

Highly Flexible Dielectric Films from Solution Processable Covalent Organic Frameworks**

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are known to be a promising class of materials for a wide range of applications, yet their poor solution processability limits their utility in many areas. Here we report a pore engineering method using hydrophilic side chains to improve the processability of hydrazone and β-ketoenamine-linked COFs and the production of flexible, crystalline films. Further, mechanical measurements of the free-standing COF films of COF-PEO-3 (hydrazone-linked) and TFP-PEO-3 (β-ketoenamine-linked), revealed a Young's modulus of 391.7 MPa and 1034.7 MPa, respectively. The solubility and excellent mechanical properties enabled the use of these COFs in dielectric devices. Specifically, the TFP-PEO-3 film-based dielectric capacitors display simultaneously high dielectric constant and breakdown strength, resulting in a discharged energy density of 11.22 J cm -3 . This work offers a general approach for producing solution processable COFs and mechanically flexible COF-based films, which hold great potential for use in energy storage and flexible electronics applications.

A Dual Anion Chemistry-Based Superionic Glass Enabling Long-Cycling All-Solid-State Sodium-Ion Batteries

Glassy Na-ion solid-state electrolytes (GNSSEs) are an important group of amorphous SSEs. However, the insufficient ionic conductivity of state-of-the-art GNSSEs at room temperature lessens their promise in the development of all-solid-state Na-ion batteries (ASSNIBs) with high energy density and improved safety. Here we report the discovery of a new sodium superionic glass, 0.5Na 2 O 2 -TaCl 5 (NTOC), based on dual-anion sublattice of oxychlorides. The unique local structures with abundant bridging and non-bridging oxygen atoms contributes to a highly disordered Na-ion distribution as well as low Na + migration barrier within NTOC, enabling an ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 4.62 mS cm −1 at 25 °C (more than 20 times higher than those of previously reported GNSSEs). Moreover, the excellent formability of glassy NTOC electrolyte and its high electrochemical oxidative stability ensure a favourable electrolyte-electrode interface, contributing to superior cycling stability of ASSNIBs for over 500 cycles at room temperature. The discovery of glassy NTOC electrolyte would reignite research enthusiasm in superionic glassy SSEs based on multi-anion chemistry.

Synergy of Oxygen Vacancies and Base Sites for Transfer Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes on Ceria Nanorods

CeO 2 nanorod based catalysts for the base-free synthesis of azoxy-aromatics via transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes with ethanol as hydrogen donor have been synthesized and investigated. The oxygen vacancies (O v ) and base sites are critical for their excellent catalytic properties. The O v , i.e., undercoordinated Ce cations, serve as the sites to activate ethanol and nitroarenes by lowering the energy barrier to transfer hydrogen from α–C sp3 –H in ethanol to the nitro group coupling it to the redox reactions between Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ . At the same time, the base sites catalyze the condensation step to selectively produce azoxy-aromatics. Finally, the catalytic route opens a much improved way to use non-noble metal oxides without additives for the selective functional group reduction and coupling reactions.

2D Metal/Graphene and 2D Metal/Graphene/Metal Systems for Electrocatalytic Conversion of CO 2 to Formic Acid

Efficiently transforming CO 2 into renewable energy sources is crucial for decarbonization efforts. Formic acid (HCOOH) holds great promise as a hydrogen storage compound due to its high hydrogen density, non-toxicity, and stability under ambient conditions. However, the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 (CO 2 RR) on conventional carbon black-supported metal catalysts faces challenges such as low stability through dissolution and agglomeration, as well as suffering from high overpotentials and the necessity to overcome the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, we modify the physical/chemical properties of metal surfaces by depositing metal monolayers on graphene (M/G) to create highly active and stable electrocatalysts. Strong covalent bonding between graphene and metal is induced by the hybridization of sp and d orbitals, especially the sharp $d_{z^2}$, $d_{yz}$, $d_{xz}$ orbitals of metals near the Fermi level, playing a decisive role. Moreover, charge polarization on graphene in M/G enables the deposition of another thin metallic film, forming metal/graphene/metal (M/G/M) structures. Finally, evaluating overpotentials required for CO 2 reduction to HCOOH, CO, and HER, we find that Pd/G, Pt/G/Ag, and Pt/G/Au exhibit excellent activity and selectivity toward HCOOH production. Our novel 2D hybrid catalyst design methodology may offer insights into enhanced electrochemical reactions through the electronic mixing of metal and other p-block elements.
