Role of Eu-Doping in the Electron Transport Behavior in the Zintl Thermoelectric Ca 5-x-y Yb x Eu y Al 2 Sb 6 System

A series of Eu-doped Zintl compounds belonging to theCa 5-x-y Yb x Eu y Al 2 Sb 6 (x = 0, 1.12; 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.63(2)) system have been successfully synthesized by both the arc-melting and the molten Pb-flux methods. All of the five title compounds initially crystallized in the Ca 5 Ga 2 As 6 -type phase (space group Pbam, Z = 2, Pearson code oP26) and maintained their original structure even after the post-heat treatment, unlike the recently reported n-type Zintl analogues in the Ca 5-x-y Yb x RE y Al 2 Sb 6 (RE = Pr, Nd, Sm) systems, which underwent a phase transition from the Ca 5 Ga 2 As 6 -type to the Ca 5 Al 2 Bi 6 -type phase after annealing. This research aimed to understand the origin of the structural preference of the title Ca 5-x-y Yb x Eu y Al 2 Sb 6 system, whether it was affected by the valence electron count or the cationic size. Electrical transport property measurements showed an increase in electrical conductivities and a decrease of Seebeck coefficients for Ca 4.89(1) Eu 0.11 Al 2 Sb 6 , Ca 4.82(1) Eu 0.18 Al 2 Sb 6 , and Ca 4.62(1) Eu 0.38 Al 2 Sb 6 , compared to the parental compound Ca 5 Al 2 Sb 6 . Hole effect measurements proved that these changes should be attributed to the reduced carrier concentration and enhanced carrier mobility. The comprehensive density functional theory calculations including electron density map analysis for the hypothetical model Ca 4.5 Eu 0.5 Al 2 Sb 6 revealed that the polarity between Al and Sb forming the anionic frameworks decreased as the Eu-dopants were introduced, which eventually affected the carrier mobility in the anionic frameworks. Thermal conductivity measurements proved that the Eu-doping successfully lowered the lattice thermal conductivity because of the enhanced atomic disordering. In conclusion, the magnetization measurements for Ca 4.37(2) Eu 0.63 Al 2 Sb 6 showed a typical Curie–Weiss behavior with weak antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions with θ p = -5.07 K.

Superionic conduction in solid polymer electrolytes – decoupling ion transport from segmental relaxation

Solvent-free, solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are promising candidates for next-generation, electrochemical energy storage systems due to their potential to enhance safety and performance, enable flexible device architectures, and streamline manufacturing processes. Conventional SPEs suffer from limited ionic conductivity due to the strong coupling between ion transport and (generally slow) polymer segmental relaxation. The realization of superionic conduction in SPEs, in which ions move faster than the structural relaxation of the polymers, requires a shift in design principles to promote this type of decoupled ion motion. In this perspective, we discuss how polymer architecture, ion–ion correlations, and ion–polymer interactions can unlock superionic behavior. We highlight several key design features, such as crystallinity, bulky side groups, high molecular weight, and percolating ionic aggregation, with a focus on creating low-barrier transport pathways in various polymer systems. We also demonstrate opportunities to combine polymer chemistry and data science through high-throughput and automated screening approaches to reveal how phase behavior, ion dynamics, and ionic interactions govern transport, thereby potentially enabling data-driven discovery of superionic polymer electrolyte materials.

Enhancing the metal–insulator transition in VO 2 heterostructures with graphene interlayers

In this work, studies were conducted on epitaxial VO 2 thin films to assess to the effect of remote epitaxy on the metal–insulator transition (MIT). The epitaxial VO 2 heterostructures were synthesized on both bare Al 2 O 3 (0001) substrates and Al 2 O 3 substrates coated with two monolayer-thick graphene. While both systems exhibit the MIT, the film grown by remote epitaxy on graphene demonstrates improved transport properties. Electrical transport measurements show that the on/off ratio is enhanced by a factor of ~7.5 and the switching temperature window is narrower for VO 2 thin films grown on graphene. By characterizing the heterostructures with a suite of structural, chemical, and spectroscopic tools, we find that the graphene interlayer inhibits oxygen vacancy diffusion from Al 2 O 3 (0001) during the VO 2 growth, resulting in improved electrical behavior at the MIT.

Structure–Activity Relationships in Ether-Functionalized Solid-State Metal–Organic Framework Electrolytes

The structure–property relationships of metal–organic framework (MOF)-based solid-state electrolytes are not well understood. Herein, a systematic investigation of 12 Zr(IV)-based UiO-66 MOFs with varying ether-chain functional groups was carried out to elucidate the critical microscopic interactions that facilitate improved solid-state electrolyte performance. Enhanced sampling molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed and revealed a three-tier ion hopping mechanism: linker–linker hopping, linker-counterion hopping, and counterion-counterion hopping. Detailed structural analysis of the MD trajectories revealed that the chemistry and morphology of the linker groups affect the relative stability and population distribution of the electrolyte components, such that crown-ether-based linker groups enhance the probability of extended, low-barrier ion percolation pathways. As a result, we were able to tune the ionic conductivities by rationally manipulating the counterion distributions, linker binding strengths, and the configurational entropy (multivariability of the linkers). The resulting performance of these MOF-based solid-state electrolytes was significantly enhanced, with a methoxy-functionalized framework (UiO-66-L1 100 ) achieving high ionic conductivities of 2.32 × 10 –4 S/cm and 2.07 × 10 –3 S/cm at 30 °C and 90 °C, respectively, an order of magnitude greater than other all-solid-state MOF electrolyte systems. The electrolyte stability was evaluated with LiIn|LPSCl|MOF:LiTFSI|LPSCl|LiIn symmetric cells, showing excellent Li plating/stripping processes for over 2 months.

Theoretical understanding of stability of the oxygen electrode in a proton-conductor based solid oxide electrolysis cell

The oxygen electrode in a proton-conductor based solid oxide cells is often a triple-conducting material that enables the transport and exchange of electrons (e - ), oxygen ions (O 2- ), and protons (H + ), thus expanding active areas to enhance the oxygen electrode activity. In this work, a theoretical model was developed to understand stability of tri-conducting oxygen electrode by studying chemical potentials of neutral species (i.e., μ o 2 , μ H 2 , and μ H 2 O ) as functions of transport properties, operating parameters, and cell geometry. Our theoretical understanding shows that (1): In a conventional oxygen-ion based solid oxide cell, a high μ o 2 (thus high oxygen partial pressure) exists in the oxygen electrode during the electrolysis mode, which may lead to the formation of cracks at the electrode/electrolyte interface. Further, while in a proton-conductor based solid oxide cell, the μ o 2 is reduced significantly, suppressing the crack formation, and resulting in improved performance stability (2). In a typical proton-conductor based solid oxide electrolyzer, the dependence of μ o 2 on the Faradaic efficiency is negligible. Hence, approaches to block the electronic current can improve the electrolysis efficiency while achieving stability (3). The difference of the μ o 2 (thus p o 2 ) between the oxygen electrode and gas phase can be reduced by using higher ionic conducting components and improving electrode kinetics, which lead to further improvement of electrode stability.

Synthesis of Fluorine-Doped Lithium Argyrodite Solid Electrolytes for Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) that utilize novel solid electrolytes (SEs) have garnered much attention because of their potential to yield safe and high-energy-density batteries. Sulfide-based argyrodite-class SEs are an attractive option because of their impressive ionic conductivity. Recent studies have shown that LiF at the interface between Li and SE enhances electrochemical stability. However, the synthesis of F-doped argyrodites has remained challenging because of the high temperatures used in the state-of-the-art solid-state synthesis methods. In this work, for the f irst time, we report F-doped Li 5+y PS 5 F y argyrodites with a tunable doping content and dual dopants (F-/Cl- and F-/Br-) that were synthesized through a solvent-based approach. Among all compositions, Li 6 PS 5 F 0.5 C l0.5 exhibits the highest Li-ion conductivity of 3.5 x 10 -4 S cm -1 at room temperature (RT). Furthermore, Li symmetric cells using Li 6 PS 5 F 0.5 Cl 0.5 show the best cycling performance among the tested cells. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the enhanced interfacial stability of Li 6 PS 5 F 0.5 C l0.5 SE against Li metal can be attributed to the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)-containing conductive species (Li 3 P), alongside LiCl and LiF. These findings open new opportunities to develop high-performance SSLMBs using a novel class of F-doped argyrodite electrolytes.

Implementing and Improving CBMZ-MAM3 Chemistry and Aerosol Modules in the Regional Climate Model WRF-CAM5: An Evaluation over the Western US and Eastern North Pacific

The representation of aerosols in climate-chemistry models is important for air quality and climate change research, but it can require significant computational resources. The objective of this study was to improve the representation of aerosols in climate–chemistry models, specifically in the carbon bond mechanism, version Z (CBMZ), and modal aerosol modules with three lognormal modes (MAM3) in the WRF-CAM5 model. The study aimed to enhance the model’s chemistry capabilities by incorporating biomass burning emissions, establishing a conversion mechanism between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and secondary organic carbons (SOCs), and evaluating its performance against observational benchmarks. The results of the study demonstrated the effectiveness of the enhanced chemistry capabilities in the WRF-CAM5 model. Six simulations were conducted over the western U.S. and northeastern Pacific region, comparing the model’s performance with observational benchmarks such as reanalysis, ground-based, and satellite data. The findings revealed a significant reduction in root-mean-square errors (RMSE) for surface concentrations of black carbon (BC) and organic carbon (OC). Specifically, the model exhibited a 31% reduction in RMSE for BC concentrations and a 58% reduction in RMSE for OC concentrations. These outcomes underscored the importance of accurate aerosol representation in climate-chemistry models and emphasized the potential for improving simulation accuracy and reducing errors through the incorporation of enhanced chemistry modules in such models.

Ionic conductivity optimization of composite polymer electrolytes through filler particle chemical modification

The addition of filler particles to polymer electrolytes is known to increment their ionic conductivity (IC). A detailed understanding of how the interactions between the constituent materials are responsible for the enhancement remains to be developed. A significant contribution is ascribed to an increment of the polymer amorphous fraction, induced by the fillers, resulting in the formation of higher ionic conductivity channels in the polymer matrix. However, the dependence of IC on the particle weight load and its composition on the polymer morphology is not fully understood. This work investigates Li-ion transport in composite polymer electrolytes (CPE) comprising Bi-doped LLZO particles embedded in PEO:LiTFSI matrixes. We find that the IC optimizes for very low particle weight loads (5-10%) and that both its magnitude and the load are required, strongly dependent on the garnet particle composition. Based on structural characterization results and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, a mechanism is proposed to explain these findings. It is suggested that the Li-molar content in the garnet particle controls its interactions with the polymer matrix, resulting at the optimum loads reported, in the formation of high ionic conductivity channels. We propose that filler particle chemical manipulation of the polymer morphology is a promising avenue for the further development of composite polymer electrolytes.

Realization of Electron Antidoping by Modulating the Breathing Distortion in BaBiO 3

The recent proposal of antidoping scheme breaks new ground in conceiving conversely functional materials and devices; yet, the few available examples belong to the correlated electron systems. Here, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the main group oxide BaBiO 3 is a model system for antidoping using oxygen vacancies. The first-principles calculations show that the band gap systematically increases due to the strongly enhanced Bi-O breathing distortions away from the vacancies and the annihilation of Bi 6 s /O 2 p hybridized conduction bands near the vacancies. Our further spectroscopic experiments confirm that the band gap increases systematically with electron doping, with a maximal gap enhancement of ~75% when the film's stoichiometry is reduced to BaBiO 2.75 . These results unambiguously demonstrate the remarkable antidoping effect in a material without strong electron correlations and underscores the importance of bond disproportionation in realizing such an effect.

Antiferromagnetic Inverse Spinel Oxide LiCoVO 4 with Spin-Polarized Channels for Water Oxidation

Exploring highly efficient catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for water electrolysis. Cost-effective transition-metal oxides with reasonable activity are raising attention. Recently, OER reactants' and products' differing spin configurations have been thought to cause slow reaction kinetics. Catalysts with magnetically polarized channels could selectively remove electrons with opposite magnetic moment and conserve overall spin during OER, enhancing triplet state oxygen molecule evolution. Herein, antiferromagnetic inverse spinel oxide LiCoVO 4 is found to contain d 7 Co 2+ ions that can be stabilized under active octahedral sites, possessing high spin states S = 3/2 (t 2g 5 e g 2 ). With high spin configuration, each Co 2+ ion has an ideal magnetic moment of 3 µ B , allowing the edge-shared Co 2+ octahedra in spinel to be magnetically polarized. Density functional theory simulation results show that the layered antiferromagnetic LiCoVO 4 studied contains magnetically polarized channels. The average magnetic moment (µ ave ) per transition-metal atom in the spin conduction channel is around 2.66 µ B . Such channels are able to enhance the selective removal of spin-oriented electrons from the reactants during the OER, which facilitates the accumulation of appropriate magnetic moments for triplet oxygen molecule evolution. Finally, the LiCoVO 4 reported has been identified as an oxide catalyst with excellent OER activity.

Phase Stability and Electrochemical Performance of La-Site-Doped Li6La3Zr0.5Nb0.5Ta0.5Hf0.5O12 High-Entropy Garnets

We investigate La-site substitution in the high-entropy garnet Li6La3Zr0.5Nb0.5Ta0.5Hf0.5O12 (LLZNTH) using Ba2+, Sr2+, and Sm3+ to elucidate how dopant governs phase stability, Li-site distribution, and electrochemical behavior. X-ray diffraction shows that Sr2+ is incorporated homogeneously into the garnet lattice, whereas the larger Ba2+ and smaller Sm3+ ions partially exceed the structural tolerance, generating secondary phases. Nevertheless, the Sm-doped composition (x = 0.05) exhibits the highest room-temperature ionic conductivity (2.7 × 10–4 S cm–1). Neutron powder diffraction reveals that Sm substitution drives a redistribution of Li+ from the tetrahedral 24 d sites into the higher-mobility 96 h positions, enhancing the connectivity of the three-dimensional Li-ion migration network. A Sm-doping series (x = 0.01–0.05) further shows that only sufficiently high Sm levels induce this redistribution, whereas lower concentrations retain Li arrangements similar to the undoped garnet. Critical current density measurements demonstrate that La-site dopants also influence interfacial stability against Li metal, underscoring a trade-off between bulk transport enhancement and mechanical robustness. Collectively, these findings reveal that in high-entropy garnets improved ionic conductivity can originate not only from phase-pure structures but also from targeted modification of the Li sublattice, even when accompanied by secondary phases, offering a compositional design principle for garnet electrolytes.

Peri-Net-Pro: the neural processes with quantified uncertainty for crack patterns

Abstract This paper develops a deep learning tool based on neural processes (NPs) called the Peri-Net-Pro, to predict the crack patterns in a moving disk and classifies them according to the classification modes with quantified uncertainties. In particular, image classification and regression studies are conducted by means of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and NPs. First, the amount and quality of the data are enhanced by using peridynamics to theoretically compensate for the problems of the finite element method (FEM) in generating crack pattern images. Second, case studies are conducted with the prototype microelastic brittle (PMB), linear peridynamic solid (LPS), and viscoelastic solid (VES) models obtained by using the peridynamic theory. The case studies are performed to classify the images by using CNNs and determine the suitability of the PMB, LBS, and VES models. Finally, a regression analysis is performed on the crack pattern images with NPs to predict the crack patterns. The regression analysis results confirm that the variance decreases when the number of epochs increases by using the NPs. The training results gradually improve, and the variance ranges decrease to less than 0.035. The main finding of this study is that the NPs enable accurate predictions, even with missing or insufficient training data. The results demonstrate that if the context points are set to the 10th, 100th, 300th, and 784th, the training information is deliberately omitted for the context points of the 10th, 100th, and 300th, and the predictions are different when the context points are significantly lower. However, the comparison of the results of the 100th and 784th context points shows that the predicted results are similar because of the Gaussian processes in the NPs. Therefore, if the NPs are employed for training, the missing information of the training data can be supplemented to predict the results.

Multifunctional Coatings on Sulfide‐Based Solid Electrolyte Powders with Enhanced Processability, Stability, and Performance for Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract Sulfide‐based solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) exhibit many tantalizing properties including high ionic conductivity and favorable mechanical properties for next‐generation solid‐state batteries. Widespread adoption of these materials is hindered by their intrinsic instability under ambient conditions, which makes them difficult to process at scale, and instability at the Li||SSE and cathode||SSE interfaces, which limits cell performance and lifetime. Atomic layer deposition is leveraged to grow thin Al 2 O 3 coatings on Li 6 PS 5 Cl powders to address both issues simultaneously. These coatings can be directly grown onto Li 6 PS 5 Cl particles with negligible chemical modification of the underlying material and enable exposure of powders to pure and H 2 O‐saturated oxygen environments for ≥4 h with minimal reactivity, compared with significant degradation of the uncoated powder. Pellets fabricated from coated powders exhibit ionic conductivities up to 2× higher than those made from uncoated material, with a simultaneous decrease in electronic conductivity and significant suppression of chemical reactivity at the Li‐SSE interface. These benefits result in significantly improved room temperature cycle life at high capacity and current density. It is hypothesized that this enhanced performance derives from improved intergranular properties and improved Li metal adhesion. This work points to a completely new framework for designing active, stable, and scalable materials for next‐generation solid‐state batteries.

Tuning of the magnetotransport properties of a spin-polarized 2D electron system using visible light

We report on the effects of visible light on the low temperature electronic properties of the spin-polarized two dimensional electron system (2DES) formed at the interfaces between LaAlO 3 , EuTiO 3 and (001) SrTiO 3 . A strong, persistent modulation of both longitudinal and transverse conductivity was obtained using light emitting diodes (LEDs) with emissions at different wavelengths in the visible spectrum range. In particular, Hall effect data show that visible light induces a non-volatile electron filling of bands with mainly 3 dxz,yz character, and at the same time an enhancement of the anomalous Hall effect associated to the magnetic properties of the system. Accordingly, a suppression of the weak-anti localization corrections to the magneto-conductance is found, which correlates with an enhancement of the spin-polarization and of the ferromagnetic character of 2DES. The results establish the LED-induced photo-doping as a viable route for the control of the ground state properties of artificial spin-polarized oxide 2DES.

Second-harmonic generation in nonlinear plasmonic lattices enhanced by quantum emitter gain medium

In this work, we report on a theoretical study of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in plasmonic nanostructures interacting with two-level quantum emitters (QEs) under incoherent energy pump. We generalize the driven-dissipative Tavis–Cummings model by introducing the anharmonic surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) mode coupled to QEs and examine physical properties of corresponding SPP-QE polariton states. Our calculations of the SHG efficiency for strong QE-SPP coupling demonstrate orders of magnitude enhancement facilitated by the polariton gain. We further discuss time-domain numerical simulations of SHG in a square lattice comprising Ag nanopillars coupled to QEs utilizing a fully vectorial nonperturbative nonlinear hydrodynamic model for conduction electrons coupled to Maxwell–Bloch equations for QEs. The simulations support the idea of gain enhanced SHG and show orders of magnitude increase in the SHG efficiency as the QEs are tuned in resonance with the lattice plasmon mode and brought above the population inversion threshold by incoherent pumping. By varying pump frequency and tuning QEs to a localized plasmon mode, we demonstrate further enhancement of the SHG efficiency facilitated by strong local electric fields. The incident light polarization dependence of the SHG is examined and related to the symmetries of participating plasmon modes.
