Schema Elements for Granta Annual Report

Granta: Materials Intelligence, also known as Granta:MI or Granta, is a commercial database software by Ansys, Inc. that is utilized by the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) to organize and store materials data relevant to the complex. The software was first adopted by individual sites in the early 2000’s, but in FY20, enterprise-wide licensing was purchased for the NSE by the Product Realization Integrated Digital Enterprise (PRIDE) program. Currently, there are 375 floating licenses available for users at all sites. There are also two shared instances of Granta; a classified production instance on the Enterprise Secure Network (ESN) and an unclassified development instance. Additionally, some individual sites such as Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) host their own local Granta instances on their own networks that, in general, only their employees can access.

Two-dimensional finite element model of the pultrusion process

Composite materials used in the fabrication of industrial products/components are under constant development. Applications vary widely from consumer products to high-performance aerospace components. The pultrusion process is one of the important methods of production of composite materials. In order to develop a fundamental understanding of this process, a computational model employing the finite element method is developed which enables a prediction of the material temperature and degree-of-cure at any time during the process. The model is comprehensive; it can readily be employed to perform parametric studies of the process and to aid in the development of efficient design procedures for this type of material system. Comparisons are made between model predictions and experimental results and good agreement is observed.

Applications of NASTRAN to nuclear problems

The extent to which suitable solutions may be obtained for one physics problem and two engineering type problems is traced. NASTRAN appears to be a practical tool to solve one-group steady-state neutron diffusion equations. Transient diffusion analysis may be performed after new levels that allow time-dependent temperature calculations are developed. NASTRAN piecewise linear anlaysis may be applied to solve those plasticity problems for which a smooth stress-strain curve can be used to describe the nonlinear material behavior. The accuracy decreases when sharp transitions in the stress-strain relations are involved. Improved NASTRAN usefulness will be obtained when nonlinear material capabilities are extended to axisymmetric elements and to include provisions for time-dependent material properties and creep analysis. Rigid formats 3 and 5 proved to be very convenient for the buckling and normal-mode analysis of a nuclear fuel element.

Connector pin and method

An electrical connector and method includes a connector and a conforming element proximate to or in contact with the mating end of the connector so as to prevent distortion of a matable end. The matable end of the connector may be of a female or male type and may be of a post, tube, blade, pin, or other configuration. An element made of conforming material, for example, an elastomer, epoxy or rubber type material, is configured and positioned in contact with the matable end of the connector, providing support during assembly to prevent distortion of the matable end. The conforming element may be rectangular, wedge, cylindrical, conical, annular, or of another configuration as required to provide support to the connector pin. The conforming element may be fastened with an adhesive to the matable end to further prevent distortion.

Computationally aided, entropy-driven synthesis of highly efficient and durable multi-elemental alloy catalysts

Multi-elemental alloy nanoparticles (MEA-NPs) hold great promise for catalyst discovery in a virtually unlimited compositional space. However, rational and controllable synthesize of these intrinsically complex structures remains a challenge. Here, we report the computationally aided, entropy-driven design and synthesis of highly efficient and durable catalyst MEA-NPs. The computational strategy includes prescreening of millions of compositions, prediction of alloy formation by density functional theory calculations, and examination of structural stability by a hybrid Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics method. Selected compositions can be efficiently and rapidly synthesized at high temperature (e.g., 1500 K, 0.5 s) with excellent thermal stability. We applied these MEA-NPs for catalytic NH 3 decomposition and observed outstanding performance due to the synergistic effect of multi-elemental mixing, their small size, and the alloy phase. We anticipate that the computationally aided rational design and rapid synthesis of MEA-NPs are broadly applicable for various catalytic reactions and will accelerate material discovery.

Evaluation of Constitutive Relationship for Silicon Carbide Cladding Material

A curved representative volume element (RVE) was employed to analyze SiC/SiC tubular composites. By imposing periodicity on the tubular model through appropriate boundary conditions, the elastic constants of the composite was evaluated. It was found that as the radius of the tubular composite increases, the more the flat RVE model and curved RVE model disagreed.

Compositional data for twenty-one Fra Mauro lunar materials.

Major, minor, and trace element analyses are presented for two igneous rocks, six breccias, four microbreccias, two breccia clasts, and six soils, as well as a sample of sawdust from rock 14066. Evaluation of the data suggests that the samples from the Fra Mauro highlands have the same nonterrestrial characteristics shown previously by the samples returned from the mare regions by Apollo 11 and 12 - namely, a high refractory element content, a lower volatile element content, and an excess reducing capacity above that due to FeO. The Fra Mauro soils have higher concentrations of Al2O3, Na2O, and K2O and lower amounts of FeO and TiO2 than do the mare soils. They also show a bimodal distribution of Ni, B, and Nb. The highland breccias are richer in SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, Na2O, and K2O than those returned from the mare lowlands. FeO, TiO2, and MnO are lower in concentration at Fra Mauro, and the highland breccias are more complex mineralogically than those collected previously.

Development of a moderately sized finite element program for nonlinear structural analysis

AGGIE 1 is a computer program for predicting the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic structural response of two- and three-dimensional continuum solids. The program is based on isoparametric finite elements and allows for 2-D plane stress, plane strain, and axisymmetric analyses and general 3-D analyses. Large strain kinematics is based on the total Lagrangian formulation. Materially nonlinear models include several elastic-plastic work-hardening models as well as an incompressible Mooney-Rivlin model. Included in this report is a brief description of the theoretical bases of the program, the material models used, the element library and the overall program organization. Instructions for data input preparation are given in detail. Several sample problems are given along with the required program input and program generated solutions.

Luna 24 origins - Some trace element constraints

Luna 24 basaltic material originated in the particular volume of the lunar crust that produced Apollo 11 and Luna 16 basaltic material; it has the same Clr/P2O5 (r = residual) signature. Ru-Os contents (Barsukov et al., 1977) and a number of radiogenic age measurements place Luna 24 basalt origins stratigraphically in a layer between those from which Apollo 15 and Apollo 11 and 17 basalts were derived.

Effect of Stitching on Debonding in Composite Structural Elements

Stitched multiaxial warp knit materials have been suggested as viable alternatives to laminated prepreg materials for large aircraft structures such as wing skins. Analyses have been developed to quantify the effectiveness of stitching for reducing strain energy release rates in skin-stiffener debond, lap joint and sandwich debond configurations. Strain energy release rates were computed using the virtual crack closure technique. In all configurations, the stitches were shown to significantly reduce the strain energy release rate.

Multi-Element Electron-Transfer Optical Detector System

A multi-element optical detector system includes an electrically resistive screen that is substantially transparent to radiation energy having a wavelength of interest. A plurality of electron transfer elements (e.g., a low work function photoactive material or a carbon nanotube (CNT)-based element) are provided with each having a first end and a second end. The first end of each element is spaced apart from the screen by an evacuated gap. When the radiation energy passes through the screen with a bias voltage applied thereto, transfer of electrons through each element is induced from the first end to the second end such that a quantity indicative of the electrons transferred through each element can be detected.

Generation of Rare Earth Metals from Rare Earth Oxide Using Microwave Plasmas

The overarching goal of the proposed project is to develop a simple, energy-saving, high-selectivity technology for efficiently converting rare-earth oxides (REOs) to rare-earth metals (RE-metals) using microwave plasma under low temperature and inexpensive H 2 and N 2 . The project was managed and led by Dr. Maohong Fan at the University of Wyoming. The collaborating institutions include Ames Lab and Colorado School of Mines. The industrial collaboration entity is Eutectix, LLC. The use of hydrogen to reduce rare earth oxides has many advantages, as it is renewable and does not produce harmful emissions during metal production. Also, it avoids the use of carbon and the emission of CO 2 . Nd 2 O 3 treated with hydrogen plasma shows new peaks alongside those of Nd 2 O 3 . Some of these peaks are close to (28.4, 29.4, 30.5, 32.3, 36.6, 42.1, 48.9, 50.08, 55.1, 59.05, 59.64, 60.68, 62.5, 63.25), which may be related to elemental Nd.

Advancing material modeling in hydrocodes using a concurrent finite-element and molecular dynamics multiscale framework

We present a multiscale simulation framework that couples the finite-element method with molecular dynamics. Bypassing traditional equations of state (EOS) by using in-line atomistic simulations, the method offers the advantage of incorporating detailed microscale physics not easily represented with coarse-grained models. Coupling consistency with the continuum code is ensured through the use of lifting and restriction operators, in line with heterogeneous multiscale methods. The concurrent continuum-atomistic framework is validated through comparison with experimental results and conventional EOS models, and demonstrated in a shock-driven hydrodynamic flow simulation under extreme conditions. We further evaluate the framework's usability by comparing it to state-of-the-art EOS models of deuterium. A computational performance study reveals that the atomistic EOS evaluation is a feasible alternative to conventional approaches, and demonstrates a weak scaling of 99% efficiency. These results highlight the framework's potential for large-scale multiscale modeling across a broad range of materials and conditions.

Analytical continuation of matrix-valued functions: Carathéodory formalism

Finite-temperature quantum field theories are formulated in terms of Green's functions and self-energies on the Matsubara axis. In multiorbital systems, these quantities are related to positive semidefinite matrix-valued functions of the Carathéodory and Schur class. Analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of derived quantities such as real-frequency response functions requires analytic continuation of the off-diagonal elements to the real axis. Here we derive the criteria under which such functions exist for given Matsubara data and present an interpolation algorithm that intrinsically respects their mathematical properties. For small systems with precise Matsubara data, we find that the continuation exactly recovers all off-diagonal and diagonal elements. In real-materials systems, we show that the precision of the continuation is sufficient for the analytic continuation to commute with the Dyson equation, and we show that the truncation of the off-diagonal self-energy elements leads to considerable approximation artifacts.

Robust training of machine learning interatomic potentials with dimensionality reduction and stratified sampling

Abstract Machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) enable accurate simulations of materials at scales beyond that accessible by ab initio methods and play an increasingly important role in the study and design of materials. However, MLIPs are only as accurate and robust as the data on which they are trained. Here, we present DImensionality-Reduced Encoded Clusters with sTratified (DIRECT) sampling as an approach to select a robust training set of structures from a large and complex configuration space. By applying DIRECT sampling on the Materials Project relaxation trajectories dataset with over one million structures and 89 elements, we develop an improved materials 3-body graph network (M3GNet) universal potential that extrapolates more reliably to unseen structures. We further show that molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with the M3GNet universal potential can be used instead of expensive ab initio MD to rapidly create a large configuration space for target systems. We combined this scheme with DIRECT sampling to develop a reliable moment tensor potential for titanium hydrides without the need for iterative augmentation of training structures. This work paves the way for robust high-throughput development of MLIPs across any compositional complexity.
