Passive Orbital Disconnect Strut (PODS 3) structural test program

A passive orbital disconnect strut (PODS-3) was analyzed structurally and thermally. Development tests on a graphite/epoxy orbit tube and S glass epoxy launch tube provided the needed data to finalize the design. A detailed assembly procedure was prepared. One strut was fabricated. Shorting loads in both the axial and lateral direction (vs. load angle and location) were measured. The strut was taken to design limit loads at both ambient and 78 K (cold end only). One million fatigue cycles were performed at predicted STS loads (half in tension, half in compression) with the cold end at 78 K. The fatigue test was repeated at design limit loads. Six struts were then fabricated and tested as a system. Axial loads, side loads, and simulated asymmetric loads due to temperature gradients around the vacuum shell were applied. Shorting loads were measured for all tests.

Combining Structural and Substructural Mathematical Models

Automation reduces input length and potential data-entry errors. Matrix Automated Reduction and Coupling (MARC) program used for combining NASTRAN substructural models with primary structural model MARC also constructs job-control language (JCL) stream for NASTRAN batch job that utilizes previously-written user library of dynamic models. Minimizes lengthy input and reduces potential data-entry errors. MARC procedure used in assembling Space Shuttle orbiter dynamic models since 1983 and reduced NASTRAN modeling input time by as much as 50 percent. MARC program written in FORTRAN IV for interactive execution.

Dynamic characteristics of an assembly of prop-fan blades

In contrast to conventional propellers, propfan blades are thin and highly swept-back, thereby giving rise to large bending and twisting deformations and complex vibratory characteristics. Aerodynamic performance depends on the extent of steady state deformation, and the aeroelastic response depends on the vibratory frequency and mode shape. Attention is presently given to the principal results of structural analyses for a five-bladed propfan assembly; these results are compared with test data. The results encompass both steady deformations and vibratory frequencies and mode shapes in a vacuum centrifugal environment.

The Balloon Intercomparison Campaigns - An introduction and overview

The Balloon Intercomparison Campaigns of 1982 and 1983 involved a comparison of measurements by 21 instruments from seven countries, assembled on four gondolas, assigned to collect data on the vertical profiles of HCl, HNO3, NO2, NO, O3, and many other stratospheric constituents. Most of these sensors supplied data on more than two constituents. This paper describes the instruments and the constituents measured by each of the sensor and the parameters of each balloon flight, together with some results.

HTS thin films: Passive microwave components and systems integration issues

The excellent microwave properties of the High-Temperature-Superconductors (HTS) have been amply demonstrated in the laboratory by techniques such as resonant cavity, power transmission and microstrip resonator measurements. The low loss and high Q passive structures made possible with HTS, present attractive options for applications in commercial, military and spacebased systems. However, to readily insert HTS into these systems improvement is needed in such areas as repeatability in the deposition and processing of the HTS films, metal-contact formation, wire bonding, and overall film endurance to fabrication and assembly procedures. In this paper we present data compiled in our lab which illustrate many of the problems associated with these issues. Much of this data were obtained in the production of a space qualified hybrid receiver-downconverter module for the Naval Research Laboratory's High Temperature Superconductivity Space Experiment 2 (HTSSE-2). Examples of variations observed in starting films and finished circuits will be presented. It is shown that under identical processing the properties of the HTS films can degrade to varying extents. Finally, we present data on ohmic contacts and factors affecting their adhesion to HTS films, strength of wire bonds made to such contacts, and aging effects.

A Framework for Preliminary Design of Aircraft Structures Based on Process Information

This report discusses the general framework and development of a computational tool for preliminary design of aircraft structures based on process information. The described methodology is suitable for multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) activities associated with integrated product and process development (IPPD). The framework consists of three parts: (1) product and process definitions; (2) engineering synthesis, and (3) optimization. The product and process definitions are part of input information provided by the design team. The backbone of the system is its ability to analyze a given structural design for performance as well as manufacturability and cost assessment. The system uses a database on material systems and manufacturing processes. Based on the identified set of design variables and an objective function, the system is capable of performing optimization subject to manufacturability, cost, and performance constraints. The accuracy of the manufacturability measures and cost models discussed here depend largely on the available data on specific methods of manufacture and assembly and associated labor requirements. As such, our focus in this research has been on the methodology itself and not so much on its accurate implementation in an industrial setting. A three-tier approach is presented for an IPPD-MDO based design of aircraft structures. The variable-complexity cost estimation methodology and an approach for integrating manufacturing cost assessment into design process are also discussed. This report is presented in two parts. In the first part, the design methodology is presented, and the computational design tool is described. In the second part, a prototype model of the preliminary design Tool for Aircraft Structures based on Process Information (TASPI) is described. Part two also contains an example problem that applies the methodology described here for evaluation of six different design concepts for a wing spar.

Star Formation and Environment Properties of an X-Ray Sample of E and SO Galaxies

The proposed work did not result in refereed publications, but it contributed greatly to our knowledge of E and S0 galaxies, and the results were quoted in a number of talks and reviews. In particular, the effects of merging and interactions in clusters of early-type galaxies on their ability to retain an X-ray emitting halo are addressed in the recent review papers. These results were also quoted in conference papers. The galpipe data processing was completed and the database assembled in collaboration with our colleagues of the Osservatorio Astronomico di Palermo (Italy). Results on E and SO galaxies include the analysis of the ROSAT HRI images of NGC 1399 and NGC 507, which also include Galpipe source detection results.

Polarizing Grids, their Assemblies and Beams of Radiation

This article gives an analysis of the behavior of polarizing grids and reflecting polarizers by solving Maxwell's equations, for arbitrary angles of incidence and grid rotation, for cases where the excitation is provided by an incident plane wave or a beam of radiation. The scattering and impedance matrix representations are derived and used to solve more complicated configurations of grid assemblies. The results are also compared with data obtained in the calibration of reflecting polarizers at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). From these analysis, we propose a method for choosing the optimum grid parameters (wire radius and spacing). We also provide a study of the effects of two types of errors (in wire separation and radius size) that can be introduced in the fabrication of a grid.

A Conceptual Aerospace Vehicle Structural System Modeling, Analysis and Design Process

A process for aerospace structural concept analysis and design is presented, with examples of a blended-wing-body fuselage, a multi-bubble fuselage concept, a notional crew exploration vehicle, and a high altitude long endurance aircraft. Aerospace vehicle structures must withstand all anticipated mission loads, yet must be designed to have optimal structural weight with the required safety margins. For a viable systems study of advanced concepts, these conflicting requirements must be imposed and analyzed early in the conceptual design cycle, preferably with a high degree of fidelity. In this design process, integrated multidisciplinary analysis tools are used in a collaborative engineering environment. First, parametric solid and surface models including the internal structural layout are developed for detailed finite element analyses. Multiple design scenarios are generated for analyzing several structural configurations and material alternatives. The structural stress, deflection, strain, and margins of safety distributions are visualized and the design is improved. Over several design cycles, the refined vehicle parts and assembly models are generated. The accumulated design data is used for the structural mass comparison and concept ranking. The present application focus on the blended-wing-body vehicle structure and advanced composite material are also discussed.
