Technical Evaluation Report, Part A - Vortex Flow and High Angle of Attack

A symposium entitled Vortex Flow and High Angle of Attack was held in Loen, Norway, from May 7 through May 11, 2001. The Applied Vehicle Technology (AVT) panel, under the auspices of the Research and Technology Organization (RTO), sponsored this symposium. Forty-eight papers, organized into nine sessions, addressed computational and experimental studies of vortex flows pertinent to both aircraft and maritime applications. The studies also ranged from fundamental fluids investigations to flight test results, and significant results were contributed from a broad range of countries. The principal emphasis of this symposium was on "the understanding and prediction of separation-induced vortex flows and their effects on military vehicle performance, stability, control, and structural design loads." It was further observed by the program committee that "separation- induced vortex flows are an important part of the design and off-design performance of conventional fighter aircraft and new conventional or unconventional manned or unmanned advanced vehicle designs (UAVs, manned aircraft, missiles, space planes, ground-based vehicles, and ships)." The nine sessions addressed the following topics: vortical flows on wings and bodies, experimental techniques for vortical flows, numerical simulations of vortical flows, vortex stability and breakdown, vortex flows in maritime applications, vortex interactions and control, vortex dynamics, flight testing, and vehicle design. The purpose of this paper is to provide brief reviews of these papers along with some synthesizing perspectives toward future vortex flow research opportunities. The paper includes the symposium program. (15 refs.)

Current Leakage Evolution in Partially Gate Raptured Power MOSFETs

It has been observed that power MOSFETs can experience an SEGR and continue to function with altered parameters. We propose that there are three different types of SEGR modes; the micro-break, the thermal runaway, and the avalanche breakdown. Data that demonstrates these stages of device failure are presented as well as a proposed model for the micro-break. Brief discussions of the other modes, based on analysis combined with our interpretations of the older literature, are also given.

Advanced Launch Technology Life Cycle Analysis Using the Architectural Comparison Tool (ACT)

Life cycle technology impact comparisons for nanolauncher technology concepts were performed using an Affordability Comparison Tool (ACT) prototype. Examined are cost drivers and whether technology investments can dramatically affect the life cycle characteristics. Primary among the selected applications was the prospect of improving nanolauncher systems. As a result, findings and conclusions are documented for ways of creating more productive and affordable nanolauncher systems; e.g., an Express Lane-Flex Lane concept is forwarded, and the beneficial effect of incorporating advanced integrated avionics is explored. Also, a Functional Systems Breakdown Structure (F-SBS) was developed to derive consistent definitions of the flight and ground systems for both system performance and life cycle analysis. Further, a comprehensive catalog of ground segment functions was created.

Chart system simplifies identification of complex design assemblies

Identification breakdown chart that lists the component parts required for any specific end item is used to identify rapidly and accurately, from numerous drawings, all the component parts of a complex design assembly. Cylindrical and complex configurations are depicted as continuous flat surfaces for ready identification.

Trisphere spark gap actuates overvoltage relay

Trisphere spark gap and high voltage relay provides a positive, fast response, high current capacity device that will sense an overvoltage condition and remove power from the circuit before insulation breakdown. When an overvoltage occurs, the spark gap breaks down and conducts an actuating current to the relay which removes power from the circuit.

Improved frequency divider employs transistor avalanche effect

New frequency divider circuit can be synchronized over a wider input control frequency range, has greater phase stability, and is less sensitive to temperature changes than conventional synchronized oscillators. The new circuit uses the avalanche breakdown mode of operation of transistors.

Rheology of synovial fluid and its role in joint lubrication

A review of studies by Barnett, Davies, MacConaill, Charnley, Ogston, Sundblad, and others indicates that there exists a tendency to explain the lubricating mechanism existing in synovial joints by either the lubricating properties of synovial fluid or the lubricating properties of the articular surfaces. The proponents of the respective hypothesis attempted to apply either the theory of hydrodynamic lubrication or the theory of boundary lubrication. Neither of these theories, however, can represent the lubrication mechanism in joints; both theories are too crude for this purpose. The nearest approach to reality appears to be represented by more recent elastohydrodynamic theories. It is the aim of this paper to show that both the synovial fluid and the articular cartilage play an important role in the joint lubrication, and that thixotropy of synovial fluid is the key parameter in the lubricating performance of the synovial fluid itself, and of the cartilage whose pores it fills. It will be suggested also that any pathological changes in either the synovial fluid or the articular cartilage, lead to a breakdown of joint lubrication.
