Lasing efficiency of krypton ions in the (8 – 14)-nm band upon pulsed laser excitation

The emission spectra of krypton plasma in the range of 8 – 14 nm upon excitation of a pulsed gas jet by 1.06-mm Nd : YAG laser radiation with a pulse energy of 0.85 J, pulse duration of 5.2 ns, and repetition rate of 10 Hz are investigated. The krypton emission spectrum is a wide (8 – 14 nm) band, peaking at 10.3 nm, which is formed by a series of much narrower lines. The observed lines are identified, and the fraction of laser pulse energy converted into the (8 – 14)-nm emission band and emitted into half-space (2π sr) is determined. The maximum conversion efficiency is found to be 21 %. The expected throughputs of lithographic systems with sources based on Sn, Xe, and Kr ions for different wavelengths, corresponding to the emission peaks of ions of these materials, are compared. Lasing dynamics of diode-pumped Yb – Er laser with a passive Q switch exposed to high-power external light

The temporal dynamics of diode-side-pumped Yb – Er laser, with a passive Co{sup 2+} : MgAl{sub 2}O{sub 4} Q switch illuminated by a light beam (total fluence of 0.15 – 0.16 J cm{sup −2}) from a semiconductor pulsed module, is investigated. It is shown that, using this external illumination, one can change the lasing onset delay and the time jitter ΔT{sub gi}. The dependence of ΔT{sub gi} on the interval between the instant of switching the illumination module on and the lasing peak position t{sub i} has a minimum at |t{sub i}| ≈ 10 μs. The decrease in ΔT{sub gi} with a change in |t{sub i}| from 90 to 10 μs indicates that instant of lasing peak occurrence for the Yb – Er laser is partially controlled by the pulse from the highly stable semiconductor module. If |t{sub i}| < 10 μs, the enhanced luminescence fluence in the cavity of Yb – Er laser exceeds 0.16 J cm{sup −2}; the light beam from the module does not affect much the lasing process in the ytterbium – erbium laser; and, as a consequence, the time jitter recovers the initial value. Experimental investigation of laser ablation of stone polycrystalline targets

We report the results of an experimental investigation of ablation of stone polycrystalline targets of complex multicomponent composition, which imitate the substance of asteroids. The targets were irradiated by nanosecond pulses of a neodymium laser at an energy density Φ{sub L} of up to 5 × 10{sup 4} J cm{sup −2}. The experiments demonstrated the existence of two ablation regimes, with the boundary between them lying at Φ{sub L} ≈ 4000 J cm{sup −2}. The regime change is characterised by a change in the form of the dependence of the surface mass density of removed target material on the laser energy density and by the appearance of a minimum in the dependence of specific energy of destruction on Φ{sub L}. This is supposedly related to the passage from a one-dimensional plasma plume expansion to the three-dimensional one and the corresponding decrease in the efficiency of energy transfer from the laser beam to the target due to a lowering of laser-produced plasma density. Our experiments also showed the existence of a maximum in impulse coupling coefficient C{sub m} as a function of laser energy density (C{sub m} ≈ 6.3 × 10{sup −5} N W{sup −1} for Φ{sub L} = Φ{sub opt} ≈ 25 J cm{sup −2}). Maxima were also recorded in the dependences of the ablation efficiency and average ablation flow velocity on Φ{sub L}. For Φ{sub L} > Φ{sub opt}, the decrease in the function C{sub m}(Φ{sub L}) turns out to be much steeper than for metals and polymer materials. The difference is supposedly due to the lower strength and lower plasticity of the polycrystalline stone targets. (paper)

Effect of the magnetic field on the size of nanoparticles obtained by ablation of a cobalt – copper target in a liquid

Co – Cu nanoparticles were obtained by pulsed laser ablation in a liquid medium in a constant magnetic field. The organic solvent, hexane, served as a liquid medium. The influence of the magnetic field on the formation of nanoparticles was studied. It is shown that the magnetic field leads to a decrease in the size distribution width of the resulting nanoparticles. (paper)

Numerical simulation of the divergence and optical confinement factor of a semiconductor laser with an asymmetric periodic multilayer AlGaInAs/InP waveguide

The divergence and optical confinement factor of a semiconductor laser with an asymmetric periodic (multilayer) waveguide are numerically simulated. The reasons for the choice of the given heterostructure design are explained, and the consequences of choosing other layer structures are considered. It is shown how to choose the active waveguide thickness, the active region position on the waveguide, and the multilayer waveguide grating period. (lasers)

Decreasing the amplitude of macroscopic quantum fluctuations in the case of transient SRS

It is shown experimentally that, under the conditions of transient stimulated Raman scattering, pumping by two successive orthogonally polarised laser pulses makes it possible to reduce the amplitude of macroscopic quantum energy fluctuations of a Stokes pulse by a factor of 4 in comparison with single-shot pumping. An energy dispersion of 0.9 % for the first Stokes component is obtained in hydrogen at a relative energy dispersion of ytterbium laser pulses of 0.4 %. (nonlinear optical phenomena)

Quantum cascade laser with bound-to-quasi-continuum optical transitions at a temperature of up to 371 K

Based on a matched Ga{sub 0.47}In{sub 0.53}As/Al{sub 0.48}In{sub 0.52}As heteropair, we have developed a quantum cascade laser emitting at a wavelength of 7.4 μm. The chosen heterostructure with a relatively large number of quantum wells and barriers represents two mini-bands separated by a mini-gap with a localised doublet level near the upper mini-band, which provides a wide emission band (∼100 cm{sup −1}). In a pulse regime, the maximal laser operation temperature is 371 K. Such a high temperature is explained by two factors: a large energy of the transfer from the doublet to the upper mini-band and a large volt defect. The characteristic temperatures T{sub 0} are found, which are equal to 170 K for low (less than 300 K) temperatures and 270 K for the range of 300 − 370 K. In addition, optical cavity losses are determined to be 2.5 and 7.7 cm{sup −1} at temperatures of 80 and 254 K, respectively. The pulse power is 0.3 W at 80 K and 0.05 W at 293 K. Synthesis of TiO{sub 2} nanoparticles decorated with gold nanoclusters using pulsed laser ablation in liquid

Amorphous spherical titanium dioxide (TiO{sub 2}) nanoparticles, decorated gold nanoparticles, are shown to be formed under irradiation of commercial TiO{sub 2} nanopowders dispersed in aqueous solution of hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (HAuCl{sub 4}) by second-harmonic nanosecond pulses of an Nd : YAG laser. It is found that these hybrid nanostructures are formed during laser-induced remelting of the initial nanoparticles, stimulated by gold nanoclusters (providing more efficient absorption of visible laser radiation by titanium dioxide) recovered on their surface. The morphology and chemical composition of the newly formed hybrid nanomaterials are investigated in detail by electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive analysis. It is shown that the average size and number of gold nanoparticles recovered on the TiO{sub 2} surface can be controlled by varying the concentration ratio of the initial nanomaterial and HAuCl{sub 4}. A spectroscopic analysis of light scattering by single hybrid nanoparticles and the results of numerical calculation of the structure of electromagnetic fields near their surface indicate good prospects of these hybrid nanomaterials for various applications in modern optics, optoelectronics, and nanophotonics; for example, for designing chemo- and biosensor platforms and new-generation solar cells. Unipolar light: existence, generation, propagation, and impact on microobjects

A review is presented of recent works on optical unipolar pulses, whose electric area (integral of the electric field strength over time) is nonzero, which determines the predominant direction of the electric field strength. It is shown that the existence of unipolar pulses does not contradict Maxwell’s equations, and that unipolar pulses can propagate in waveguides. It is emphasised that, along with the spectral, energy, and polarisation parameters, the electric area of short light pulses is also an important characteristic. The unidirectional action of these pulses on microobjects indicates that it is promising to develop methods for generating radiation with such properties. We disciuss methods for the generation, propagation, and interaction of unipolar light with classical and quantum systems, as well as methods for recording the electric area of light pulses. Lasing characteristics of ZrO{sub 2} − Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} − Ho{sub 2}O{sub 3} crystals pumped by a Tm : LiYF{sub 4} laser

Two-micron lasing is obtained on the {sup 5}I{sub 7} → {sup 5}I{sub 8} transition of Ho{sup 3+} ions in ZrO{sub 2} − Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} −Ho{sub 2}O{sub 3} crystals upon resonance pumping into the {sup 5}I{sub 7} level of these ions by a pulsed laser based on a Tm : LiYF{sub 4} crystal. The efficiency of conversion of pump radiation incident on the crystal to laser radiation and the slope lasing efficiency at a pulse duration of 8 ms and a pulse repetition rate of 10 Hz were 25% and 28%, respectively. Resonances of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption in a light field of elliptically polarised waves

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances excited by a strong two-frequency field are considered for various values of the total angular momenta of the ground (F{sub g}) and excited (F{sub e}) states at a degenerated optical closed transition F{sub g} → F{sub e}. The light field is formed by two co-propagating waves with arbitrary elliptical polarisations. The process of spontaneous transfer of anisotropy from the excited state to the ground state is shown to determine the formation of the EIA resonance at the transition F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F + 1. The results obtained generalise the classification of transitions into ‘bright’ (F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F + 1) and ‘dark’ (F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F and F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F – 1) transitions with respect to the direction of a subnatural resonance. Scheme for stabilising the phase and arrival time of ultrashort laser pulses in a coherent beam combining fibre system

An algorithm has been demonstrated for simultaneously measuring the phase and arrival time of optical pulses relative to pulses in a reference channel using one detector array. Based on this algorithm, a simple optoelectronic pulse phase and arrival time stabilisation scheme has been designed for operation in a coherent beam combining fibre system for ultrashort pulses (including chirped ones). We have studied the performance of the stabilisation scheme. In particular, we have reached a phase measurement rate of 25 000 cps, demonstrated an ∼ 2 kHz limiting phase stabilisation frequency in a feedback loop, and obtained an arrival time measurement accuracy of ∼ 5 % of the transform-limited pulse duration at a measurement rate of 5 cps. In experiments concerned with coherent beam combining for two channels of a pulsed fibre system at a wavelength of 1030 nm, we have demonstrated phase stabilisation with an accuracy better than λ/100 and delay setting accuracy of 10 fs at a transform-limited pulse duration of ∼ 200 fs and obtained 94 % beam combining efficiency. Compact ultrastable laser system for spectroscopy of {sup 2}S{sub 1/2} → {sup 2}D{sub 3/2} quadrupole transition in {sup 171}Yb{sup +} ion

We report the results of studying a compact laser system designed for manipulating a quantum state of the optical qubit based on the {sup 2}S{sub 1/2} → {sup 2}D{sub 3/2} quadrupole transition in the {sup 171}Yb{sup +} ion at a wavelength of 435.5 nm. An emission power of the laser system reaches 500 μW at λ = 435.5 nm and the relative frequency instability of at most 3 × 10{sup −15} is achieved at averaging intervals from 0.5 to 50 s with a subtracted linear frequency drift. The compactness of the developed system makes it possible to employ it in transportable systems including optical clocks. (laser spectroscopy)

Acousto-optic modulators of high-power laser radiation on the basis of KGW and KYW crystals

Different modifications of acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) based on KG(WO{sub 4}){sub 2} (KGW) and KY(WO{sub 4}){sub 2} (KYW) crystals, designed for Q switching of high-power pulsed lasers, is developed and investigated. It is shown that AOMs based on these crystals are universal, can be combined with different lasers in the wavelength range of 1 – 3 μm, and have a high radiation resistance in the absence of antireflection coatings and light input at Brewster’s angle. The operation efficiency of KGW-based AOMs is experimentally demonstrated. Solid-state lasers based on Cr : Er : YSGG (λ = 2.78 μm), Cr : Yb : Ho : YSGG (λ = 2.87 μm), Cr : Tm : Ho : YSGG (λ = 2.09 μm), and Nd : YAG (λ = 1.064 μm) crystals with active acousto-optic Q switching, operating in the repetitively pulsed regime with a high beam quality and without surface destruction, are investigated. Lasing pulses (30 – 60)-ns long with energy up to 32 mJ at a repetition rate from 1 to 1000 Hz are obtained. (paper)

Generation of high-power few-cycle femtosecond IR pulses by double-chirp parametric amplification

We present an energy scalable configuration for the generation of high-power few-cycle femtosecond IR pulses based on the sequential parametric amplification of chirped radiation pulses at the idler (0.86 μm) and signal (1.39 μm) wavelengths from the multi-terawatt femtosecond laser system made at the Institute of Laser Physics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ILP SB RAS). The configuration under consideration involves the sequential production of radiation pulses with centre wavelengths of 2.24, 3.56, and 7.25 μm. The conditions are determined for the generation of few-cycle pulses with a terawatt peak power in the 3.56 μm (15.8 fs, 1.5 cycles) and 7.25 μm (17.2 fs, shorter than one cycle) domains. The phase transfer between signal and idler waves in the double-chirp parametric amplification is investigated for the first time. (paper)

AlGaInAs/InP semiconductor lasers with an ultra-narrow waveguide and an increased electron barrier

Semiconductor lasers based on AlGaInAs/InP heterostructures with an ultra-narrow waveguide and an increased electron barrier layer are developed. It is shown that the use of this waveguide in conjunction with profiled doping ensures a balance between internal optical losses and heat resistance. Additional use of strained wide-bandgap layers as blocking barriers limiting electron leakage from the active region makes it possible to increase the output power at the same pump current. The developed lasers with a stripe contact 100 μm wide demonstrate at room temperature an output optical power of 4.0 – 4.4 W (pump current 14 A) in a continuous-wave regime and 15 – 17 W (100 A) in a pulsed regime (100 ns, 1 kHz) at wavelengths of 1450 – 1500 nm. Seven-core fibre Raman laser with intercore coupling

This paper reports results of a study aimed at producing a Raman fibre laser based on a multicore fibre with high-reflectivity fibre Bragg gratings inscribed in its peripheral cores using femtosecond laser pulses. We present spectral and power characteristics of a Raman laser whose output power at a wavelength of 1090 nm is 2.5 W. The laser emission linewidth has been shown to decrease as a result of the reduction in nonlinear effects owing to the larger effective mode area in the multicore fibre in comparison with a standard single-mode fibre Raman laser.
