Frequency stability, tuning, coupling and tolerances of atomic hydrogen masers
Isolation of closely spaced transmitting and receiving frequencies of an antenna without insertion loss by filtering the receiver input is accomplished by an inner conductor with two winding helices and an outer conductor of aluminum. A tuning slug is at either end of the inner conductor form.
Isolation of the thermistor from spurious heat transfer for accurately measuring ambient air temperatures is accomplished by a mounting consisting of a transparent plastic film bonded to a U-shaped phenolic board with depositions of aluminum on each face and upper edge, and a variable capacitor for fine tuning.

Double emitter suppressed carrier modulator develops a signal-to-carrier minimum output ratio of 40 db and signal input of 2.5 volts. The circuit uses a commercially available double emitter chopper transistor. It eliminates tuning potentiometers and reduces sideband harmonics.
Parametric up-converter translates a broad band of signals to the fixed tuned input frequency of a maser. This modified maser can operate in the 1700-2300 Mc range, eliminating the need to duplicate equipment. It may be applied in communications and radio astronomy.
As part of the programme of experimental and development work to determine the optimum demodulating techniques for communication satellite systems, three types of demodulators have been investigated at the Goonhilly earth station: 1.A conventional demodulator of the type used in 960-channel telephony or television microwave radio-relay links; 2.A frequency modulation feed-back demodulator in which the deviation of the signal is reduced before it reaches the final discriminator; and 3.A variable-bandwidth 'dynamic-tracking' demodulator in which the resonant frequency of a narrow bandwidth tuned circuit is moved rapidly to follow the nominal instantaneous frequency of the incoming signal. The conventional demodulator will not be discussed in detail here;. however, information is given on two specialized demodulators.
Several methods of modulating a beam of light, which have been described in the literature, utilizing the influence of an electrical signal on the birefringence of certain crystals, will be reviewed. These employ optics which respond to the state of polarization of a light beam, and include intensity modulation, position modulation, and the possibility of an electrically tuned optical filter. The influence of the piezo-optic, or strain contribution to the total electro-optic response in the design of an optoelectronic device will be discussed. Current experimental work in our laboratory in which the strain contribution is separated from the direct effect will be described. The strain-free effect is measured by applying a step voltage to the crystal, and observing the initial response. The electro-optical transient response can be observed with nanosecond time resolution. An electronic sampling technique is used to extract the desired response from photon noise. The stress-free or low-frequency effect is measured similarly but at low audio frequencies. Single crystal tetragonal BaT10 3 has been investigated in detail with the result that the strain-optic contribution to the low frequency effect r_(c) = r_(33)—r_(13) is about 80% of the total, where it is only 10% in KDP and 45% in ADP. The magnitudes of the electro-optic effect, dielectric constant, and other related properties are compared for several materials potentially useful as electro-optic modulators, and some comments are made about the practical problems of building a modulator.
Device, containing a tuned series arrangement of two plenum chambers and two orifices, damps high pressure fluid oscillations in a vent valve. Used in conjunction with vent valves, it relieves gas pressure that develops in liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen tanks used on a space vehicle.
