Long Duration Exposure Facility: Transverse flat plate heat pipe

The Transverse Flat Plate Heat Pipe is a thermal control device that serves the dual function of temperature control and mounting base for electronic equipment. In it's ultimate application, the heat pipe would be a lightweight structural member that could be configured in a platform or enclosure, and provide temperature control for large space structures, flight experiments, and equipment. The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the zero-G performance of several heat pipe modules. Performance assessment includes: (1) the systems heat transport capability; (2) temperature drop between evaporator and condensor; and (3) the ability to maintain temperature over varying duty cycles and environments.

Mechanical behavior of a continuous fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composite subjected to transverse and thermal loading

The transverse properties of an aluminum alloy metal matrix composite reinforced by continuous alumina fibers were investigated. The composite is subjected to both mechanical and cyclic thermal loading. The results of an experimental program indicate that the shakedown concept of structural mechanics provides a means of describing the material behavior. When the loading conditions are within the shakedown region, the material finally responds in an elastic manner after initial plastic response, and for loading conditions outside the shakedown region, the material exhibits a rapid incremental plastic strain accumulation. The failure strain varies by an order of magnitude according to the operating conditions. Hence, for high mechanical and low thermal loading, the failure strains is small; for low mechanical and high thermal loading, the failure strain is large.

Postbuckling response of long thick plates loaded in compression including higher order transverse shearing effects

This paper presents buckling and postbuckling results for compression-loaded simply-supported aluminum plates and composite plates with a symmetric lay-up of thin +/-45-deg plies composed of many layers. Buckling results for aluminum plates of finite length are given for various length-to-width ratios. Asymptotes to the curves based on the buckling results give N(XCr) for plates of infinite length. Postbuckling results for plates with transverse shearing flexibility are compared to results from classical theory for various width-to-thickness ratios. Characteristic curves indicating the average longitudinal direct stress resultant as a function of the applied displacements are calculated based on four different theories: classical von Karman theory using the Kirchhoff assumptions, first-order shear deformation theory, higher-order shear deformation theory, and three-dimensional flexibility theory. Present results indicate that the three-dimensional flexibility theory gives the lowest buckling loads. The higher-order shear deformation theory has fewer unknowns than the three-dimensional flexibility theory but does not take into account through-the-thickness effects. The figures presented show that small differences occur in the average longitudinal direct stress resultants from the four theories that are functions of applied end-shortening displacement.

Analysis and closed-form solutions of circular and rectangular apertures in the transverse plane of a circular waveguide

An analysis is carried out to determine the discontinuity susceptance of a circular or rectangular aperture in the transverse plane of a circular waveguide. Closed-form solutions based on the scattered amplitude calculation and aperture coupling theory are derived. Example solutions for a small circular aperture and a resonant rectangular aperture are given. The calculated results agree very well with the experiments. The results have many applications in the design of circular waveguide components and circular waveguide-backed aperture antennas.

Evidence of a transverse Langmuir modulational instability in a space plasma

The auroral ionosphere Langmuir-wave electric field amplitude modulation observations presented may be accounted for by a transverse modulational instability that is resonant with lower hybrid of ion Bernstein waves. In independent observations, the modulation frequencies were near the characteristic frequencies of perpendicular modes. These data strongly suggest the need for two- or three-dimensional model descriptions of nonlinear Langmuir wave evolution in the low-beta plasma.

Directional solidification of HgCdTe and HgZnTe in a transverse magnetic field

Hg(0.80)Cd(0.20)Te crystals were grown vertically in a transverse magnetic field by directional solidification. The effect of a magnetic field on the nature of fluid flow in the melts was investigated by measuring compositional variations along the axial and radial directions of the grown ingots. Magnetic field effects were shown to be significant over the entire field range employed (i.e., 2 to 5 kG). The axial compositional profiles (determined by precision density measurements) showed an abrupt decrease in the mole fraction of CdTe when the field was applied. Radial compositional mapping by IR transmission and X-ray energy dispersion spectrometry indicated that the solid-liquid interface evolved through three stages when the field was applied (i.e., from a radially symmetric concave interface to an off-center concave shape when the field was initially applied, then to a tilted plane, and, finally, to an off-center concave interface). The axial compositional profile of an Hg(0.84)Zn(0.16)Te ingot showed similar field effects.

Ultrasonic Detection Of Transverse Cracks In Composites

Conventional ultrasonic C scan used to detect flaws in graphite/epoxy composite panels modified to enhance sensitivity to transverse cracks. Modification involves reorientation and repositioning of ultrasonic transmitter and receiver to take advantage of mode-conversion phenomena at interfaces between liquid couplant and panel to be probed. Angle of incidence chosen so only shear waves propagate obliquely through panel. Although mode-conversion equations solved to take full advantage of technique somewhat complicated, they are straightforward, and technique implemented easily in practice.

Transverse flat plate heat pipe experiment

The Transverse Flat Plate Heat Pipe is a thermal control device that serves the dual function of temperature control and mounting base for electronic equipment. In its ultimate application, the heat pipe would be a lightweight structural member that could be configured in a platform or enclosure, and provide temperature control for large space structures, flight experiments, and equipment. The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the zero g performance of several heat pipe modules. Performance assessment will include: (1) the systems heat transport capability; (2) temperature drop between evaporator and condensor; and (3) the ability to maintain temperature over varying duty cycles and environments. Also, performance degradation, if any, will be monitored over the length of the LDEF mission. The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate that a self-regulated heat pipe thermal control system can maintain hardware temperatures within tolerances of + or - 9 F or less with varying heat inputs, independent of vehicle payload orientation.

Postbuckling of long thick plates in compression including higher order transverse shearing effects

Aluminum plates of various length/width ratios loaded in compression are examined analytically in terms of buckling and postbuckling for comparison with classical theory. The plates are considered to be subjected to longitudinal compressive displacement with no edge stress and are assumed to be simply supported at the side edges. The average longitudinal direct stresses are computed to plot characteristic curves by means of the following theories: 3D flexibility, higher-order shear deformation, first-order shear deformation, and classical von Karman. The 3D flexibility approach yields the lowest results with more unknowns than the higher-order shear-deformation method. The 3D flexibility approach is considered to be the most accurate, and it is shown that the calculated resultants and displacements tend to vary when consideration is given to the effects of transverse shear.

Transverse injection into Mach 2 flow behind a rearward-facing step - A 3-D, compressible flow test case for hypersonic combustor CFD validation

A spatially-complete data set of the important primitive flow variables is presented for the complex, nonreacting, 3D unit combustor flow field employing transverse injection into a Mach 2 flow behind a rearward-facing step. A unique wind tunnel facility providing the capability for iodine seeding was built specifically for these measurements. Two optical techniques based on laser-induced-iodine fluorescence were developed and utilized for nonintrusive, in situ flow field measurements. LDA provided both mean and fluctuating velocity component measurements. A thermographic phosphor wall temperature measurement technique was developed and employed. Data from the 2D flow over a rearward-facing step and the complex 3D mixing flow with injection are reported.

Inclusion of transverse shear deformation in exact buckling and vibration analysis of composite plate assemblies

The problem considered is the development of the necessary plate stiffnesses for use in a general purpose program for buckling and vibration of composite plate assemblies. The required stiffnesses are for the assumption of sinusoidal response along the plate length with transverse shear included. The method is based on the exact solution of the plate differential equations for a composite laminate having fully populated A, B, and D matrices which leads to a differential equation of tenth order.

Numerical studies of transverse curvature effects on transonic flow stability

A numerical study of transverse curvature effects on compressible flow temporal stability for transonic to low supersonic Mach numbers is presented for axisymmetric modes. The mean flows studied include a similar boundary-layer profile and a nonsimilar axisymmetric boundary-layer solution. The effect of neglecting curvature in the mean flow produces only small quantitative changes in the disturbance growth rate. For transonic Mach numbers (1-1.4) and aerodynamically relevant Reynolds numbers (5000-10,000 based on displacement thickness), the maximum growth rate is found to increase with curvature - the maximum occurring at a nondimensional radius (based on displacement thickness) between 30 and 100.

Fracture analysis of transverse crack-tip and free-edge delamination in laminated composites

A shear deformation model including hygrothermal effects is developed for the analysis of local delaminations originating from transverse cracks in 90-deg plies located in and around the laminate midplane. A sublaminate approach is used and the model is applied to (+/- 25/90n)s T300/934 graphite/epoxy laminates for n values between 0.5 and 8, along with previously developed edge-delamination shear-deformation models. Critical loads and delamination modes are identified and compared with experimental results. Hygrothermal effects are included in all the models to make the comparisons realistic.

Role of interfacial thermal barrier in the transverse thermal conductivity of uniaxial SiC fiber-reinforced reaction bonded silicon nitride

The transverse thermal conductivity of reaction-bonded Si3N4 is significantly affected by an interfacial barrier at the interface formed with SiC reinforcing fibers. A comparative study of composites with and without reinforcing-fiber carbon coatings found the coating to reduce effective thermal conductivity by a factor of about 2; this, however, is partially due to a thermal expansion-mismatch gap between fiber and matrix. HIPing of composites with coated fibers led to an enhancement of thermal conductivity via improved interfacial thermal contact and greater grain size and crystallinity of the fibers.

LDA measurements in a Mach 2 flow over a rearward facing step with staged transverse injection

Measurements of the mean velocity field and selected turbulence statistics have been obtained via 2D LDA in a Mach 2 flow over a rearward facing step with downstream transverse injection. Axial mean velocity profiles, profiles of the axial and normal RMS levels, and the correlation coefficient between the axial and normal fluctuating components are presented for locations upstream of the step. These data, through comparison with other reported measurements in zero pressure gradient compressible boundary layers indicate that the boundary layers upstream of the step are consistent with 'quasi-equilibrium' turbulent boundary layers with the adiabatic wall boundary condition. Mean velocity field measurements on the symmetry plane of the tunnel are compared to laser induced iodine fluorescence measurements reported in the literature and obtained in the same facility. This comparison demonstrates the quality of the present LDA data set and shows that particle lag is not significant in the LDA measurements despite the complex nature of the downstream flow.

Stochastic gyroresonant electron acceleration in a low-beta plasma. I - Interaction with parallel transverse cold plasma waves

The gyroresonance of electrons with parallel transverse cold plasma waves is considered, and the Fokker-Planck equation describing the evolution of the electron distribution function in the presence of a spectrum of turbulence is derived. A new resonance which produces a divergence in the Fokker-Planck coefficients is identified; it results when the electron is in gyroresonance with a wave that has a group velocity equal to the velocity of the electron along the magnetic field. Under the assumption of a power-law spectral density, the Fokker-Planck coefficients are calculated numerically, and their complicated momentum and pitch-angle dependence, as well as the influence of various approximations to the dispersion relation, gyroresonance condition, and spectral density are discussed. It is found that there is no resonance gap at any pitch angle as long as the full gyroresonance condition is used and waves propagating on both directions are present.
