SPHINX: A Generalized Tool for Solar Energetic Particle Model Validation

The Integrated Solar Energetic Proton Alert/Warning (ISEP) project was established to aid in the transition of SEP models from the research realm to operational use. This project is a collaboration between the NASA Community Coordinated Model Center (CCMC), the NASA Moon to Mars Space Weather Analysis Office (M2M) and the NASA Space Radiation Analysis Group (SRAG). Through ISEP, the SEP Scoreboards (Intensity, Probability, and All Clear) were developed to visualize real time forecasts from SEP models for use in SRAG operations. To accomplish this, SRAG, CCMC, and M2M work closely with modelers on model development, CCMC works on Scoreboard implementation, and M2M provides human-in-the-loop space weather analysis and ensures that models run in real time.

Radiation-Enhanced Anion Transport in Hematite

The influence of radiation-induced (1 MeV energy H+ to ~0.1 dpa at 450°C), non-equilibrium point defect populations on mass transport is studied with an integrated campaign of experimental and theoretical methods. Using epitaxial thin films of hematite with embedded 18O tracer layers and nanoscale atom probe tomography measurements, it is shown that anion self-diffusion is enhanced by at least 2 orders of magnitude under irradiation compared to thermal diffusion alone. Complementary scanning transmission electron microscopy of vacuum annealed specimens, reveals associated microstructural changes in the oxide films, including local phase transformation to Fe3O4 and the development of nanoscale voids from vacancy coalescence. Point defect formation and migration energies were computed from density functional theory and applied within the context of chemical rate theory to analyze contributions from both interstitial and vacancy mechanisms to self-diffusion in thermal and irradiation conditions. Comparisons are made between calculated, literature and newly measured self-diffusion values, revealing good agreement on the magnitude of radiation-enhanced anion diffusion. Further, the model suggests a transition from vacancy to interstitialcy mechanisms at low temperatures and high oxygen activity, consistent with the varied activation energies reported from prior studies.

Role of long-wavelength degrees of freedom in the rod-to-coil transition in polymers

An analytical model is fitted to experimental data to show that rod-to-coil (RTC) transformations in single strand polymers (SSPs) are close to true phase transitions. The RTC are known to occur when the temperature or pH of a solvent in which the SSP is immersed is varied abruptly. Long wavelength degrees of freedom in the SSPs induce long range interactions in the molecule which lead to a first order phase transition. The Landau formalism suggests that a long-range ordered state can appear at a low temperature. A microscopic model of the phonon degrees of freedom identifies the nonzero temperature threshold at which the phase transition will occur. The phenomenology described is similar to a previous model for transitions in double-strand polymers.

Insights into the Oxygen Evolution Reaction on Graphene-Based Single-Atom Catalysts from First-Principles-Informed Microkinetic Modeling

Single-atom transition metals embedded in nitrogen-doped graphene have emerged as promising electrocatalysts due to their high activity and low material cost. These materials have been shown to catalyze a variety of electrochemical reactions, but their active sites under reaction conditions remain poorly understood. Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we develop a pH-dependent microkinetic model to evaluate the relative performance of transition metal catalysts embedded in fourfold N-substituted double carbon vacancies in graphene for the oxygen evolution reaction. We find that reaction pathways involving intermediates co-adsorbed on the metal site are preferred on all transition metals. These pathways lead to enhancements in catalytic activity and broaden the activity peak when compared with purely thermodynamics-based predictions. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate the importance of investigating reaction pathways on graphene-based catalysts and other two-dimensional (2D) materials that involve metal active centers decorated by spectator intermediate species.

A tail of eternal inflation

Non-trivial inflaton self-interactions can yield calculable signatures of primordial non-Gaussianity that are measurable in cosmic surveys. We calculate the non-Gaussian corrections to Stochastic Inflation within the framework of Soft de Sitter Effective Theory, from which we derive the associated probability distribution for the scalar fluctuations. As a consequence of this new result, we show that the phase transition to slow-roll eternal inflation is often incalculable in these models. Instead, this transition is sensitive to the non-Gaussian tail of the distribution of scalar fluctuations, which probes physics inside the horizon, potentially beyond the cutoff scale of the Effective Field Theory of Inflation. We delineate the parameter space consistent with current observations and weak coupling at horizon crossing in which the large fluctuations relevant for eternal inflation can only be determined by appealing to a UV completion. We also argue that this breakdown of the perturbative description is required for the de Sitter entropy to reflect the number of de Sitter microstates.

High spectral resolution observations and kinematic modeling of the 1667 MHz hyperfine transition of OH in Comets Halley (1982i), Giacobini-Zinner (1984e), Hartley-Good (1985l), Thiele (1985m), and Wilson (1986l)

High-sensitivity, high spectral resolution 18 cm observations of Comets Giacobini-Zinner, Halley, Hartley-Good, Thiele, and Wilson are used here to probe the kinematics of the coma gas of these comets. The day/night outgassing ratio for all these comets is 1.39 (0.13 or - 0.12), independent of gas productivity and heliocentric distance. It is found that the gas productivity of a comet plays a critical role in determining the coma kinematics for bright comets near the sun.
