Fatigue Test Result for High Burnup Pressurized Water Reactor Rods

The High Burnup Spent Fuel Data Project, sponsored by DOE-NE, is focused on understanding the effects of long-term storage and transportation on high burnup (HBU) (>45 gigawatt days per metric ton uranium) light water reactor fuel. The experiment includes 32 HBU spent nuclear fuel (SNF) assemblies that will be stored in a typical Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) and 25 sister rods - nine SNF rods that were removed from the fuel assemblies prior to insertion to the ISFSI and 16 SNF rods removed from similar HBU assemblies. The sister rods provide a baseline of the condition of the HBU rods prior to loading, drying, and long-term dry storage. Destructive examinations of the sister rods are focused on understanding overall SNF rod strength and durability. Both composite fuel and empty cladding will be tested to derive material properties. While the data generated can be used for multiple purposes, a primary goal of the sister rod PIE data and associated measured mechanical properties is to support existing fuel storage licensing and relicensing activities by addressing identified knowledge gaps, and enhance the technical basis for post-storage transportation, handling, and consolidation activities. Fatigue tests of HBU M5-clad, ZIRLO-clad, Zircaloy-4, and low tin Zircaloy-4 segments have been completed using ORNL’s Cyclic Integral Reversible Fatigue Tester (CIRFT). This is the first time ZIRLO-clad rods have been tested. Some of the segments were heat-treated to understand the effects of thermal transients such as those encountered during dry storage vacuum drying on the fatigue lifetime. This paper presents results of the fatigue tests obtained to date and discusses planned future tests.

Computational Modeling Demonstrates the Joint Clearance Effect on the Tensile Strength of Solder Joints.

Soldered joints can be made with a wide range of base materials and filler metals that allow the assembly to meet its performance and reliability requirements. Structural solder joints have, as their foremost requirement, to provide mechanical attachment between base material structures. The joint is typically subjected to one, or a combination of, three loading configurations: (a) tensile or compressive force, (b) shear force, or (c) peel force. Solder filler metals and in particular, the so-called “soft solders” based on tin (Sn), lead (Pb), and indium (In), generally have a bulk strength that is less than that of the base materials. Finally, deformation occurs largely in the solder when the joint is subjected to an applied force.

The encasulation effect on thermal performance of micro-encapsulated phase change materials during energy absorption

Understanding the performance of the thermal storage materials is required to successfully meet the needs of next generation concentrating solar power projects. This study focuses on the thermal characteristics of the micro-encapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) with metallic core under high temperature. A numerical model was developed and verified to study the transient heat absorption process of MEPCMs made of tin, aluminum and copper core. Convective heat transfer rate, total energy absorption and volumetric energy density were presented. The effect of encapsulation on theses variables was analyzed under various boundary and initial conditions. Its impact on characteristic time variables was discussed. The method presented can be adopted to analyzing both manufacturing and application processes for MEPCMs of various compositions, during which melting and solidification happen. Given certain operating conditions, the results from the model can be referenced to obtain optimal thermal performance of these materials.

Materials for controlling the epitaxial growth of photoactive layers in photovoltaic devices

There is disclosed ultrathin film material templating layers that force the morphology of subsequently grown electrically active thin films have been found to increase the performance of small molecule organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. There is disclosed electron-transporting material, such as hexaazatriphenylene-hexacarbonitrile (HAT-CN) can be used as a templating material that forces donor materials, such as copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) to assume a vertical-standing morphology when deposited onto its surface on an electrode, such as an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. It has been shown that for a device with HAT-CN as the templating buffer layer, the fill factor and short circuit current of CuPc:C60 OPVs were both improved compared with cells lacking the HAT-CN template. This is explained by the reduction of the series resistance due to the improved crystallinity of CuPc grown onto the ITO surface.

Interplay between phonon downconversion efficiency, density of states at Fermi energy, and intrinsic energy resolution for microwave kinectic inductance detectors

Microwave Kinetic Inductance detectors (MKIDs) have been recognized as a powerful new tool for single photon detection. These highly multiplexed superconducting devices give timing and energy measurement for every detected photon. However, the full potential of MKID single photon spectroscopy has not been reached , the achieved energy resolution is lower than expected from first principles. Here, we study the efficiency in the phonon downconversion process following the absorption of energetic photons in MKIDs. Assuming previously published material properties, we measure an average downconversion efficiency for three TiN resonators is $\eta$=0.14. We discuss how this efficiency can impact the intrinsic energy resolution of MKID, and how any uncertainty in the unknown density of electron states at the Fermi energy directly affects the efficiency estimations.

Electrochemical Manipulation and Radiolytic Evaluation of Organic Phase Neptunium

Presentation for Seed LDRD proposal presentation: This Seed LDRD research proposes to test an innovative approach to precisely control the oxidation state distribution of neptunium (Np) under used nuclear fuel (UNF) reprocessing conditions using novel electrochemical methods. Current UNF reprocessing technologies are not financially viable in the US, requiring significant scientific and technological innovation to improve cost efficiency. Reducing the number of process cycles is one avenue for increasing cost efficiency, of which resolving the challenge associated with isolating Np is critical. Under envisioned process conditions, Np is present in a mixture of extractable (Np(IV) and Np(VI)) and inextractable (Np(V)) oxidation states, the distribution of which is dependent on several factors, including ionizing radiation dose, that change throughout a reprocessing scheme. Consequently, Np unintentionally partitions into various UNF reprocessing phases and product streams, ultimately increasing the number of process cycles to isolate UNF components. Here, we propose to employ novel, high surface area, optically transparent, Ligand Modified tin-doped indium oxide Electrodes (LMES). These LMEs bind Np, and therefore enable concurrent generation and spectroscopic characterization of Np oxidation states in organic solutions. These proof-of-concept experiments will: (i) facilitate optimization of the proposed electrochemical system conditions for Np oxidation state manipulation; (ii) identify the accessible electrochemical window for Np complexes in the organic phase; (iii) report characteristic optical spectra for each accessible complexed Np oxidation state; and (iv) determine the lifetime and partitioning of a given atypical Np oxidation state in the organic phase in the presence and absence of ionizing radiation fields. The data gathered by this Seed LDRD will provide support for the design of an electrochemical process concept for the precise manipulation of Np oxidation states in UNF reprocessing solvent systems, with the intention of providing advanced control over Np mass transfer, and thus greater process efficiency and economy.

Nb3Sn Coating of Twin Axis Cavity and Other Complex SRF Cavity Structures

In the field of Accelerator Science, for the low cost and increased quality factor, thin films coated niobium cavities are used in the modern SRF research. Within the potential substances, Nb3Sn has shown higher critical temperature than niobium. Here the tin vapor diffusion method is used as the preferred technique to coat niobium cavities. So far, only elliptical cavities have been coated with Nb3Sn and this technique has not yet been applied to cavities with complex geometries, which are also helpful in the accelerator science field. The Half-wave resonator could provide us data across frequencies of interest for particle accelerators world wide. Similarly the Twin axis cavity proposed for Energy Recovary Linac (ERL) applications could benefit from Nb3Sn coating. But with their advanced geometries, increased area, more number of ports and hard to reach areas, a different coating approach is needed to provide a uniform coating of Nb3Sn. We used twin axis cavity to optimize the coating technique and followed a low temperature annealing to further improvement of the thin film quality by low temperature annealing as a post coating method. With these we could expand the current coating system at JLab to coat complex cavity models
