Apollo 17 high-Ti mare basalts - New bulk compositional data, magma types, and petrogenesis

Bulk compositional and mineral chemical data for 28 previously unanalyzed samples support the classification of Apollo-17 high-Ti mare basalts into three-types (A, B, and C), defined on the basis of analyses of fine-grained basalts. The most MgO- and TiO2-rich fine-grained basalts of these types appear to be the best choices for representing the compositions of the parent magmas.

A search for the reported Ti II 3080 multiplet emission in late-type stars

Gurzadyan (1975), using a low-resolution objective-prism spectrograph, has reported the presence of both the multiplet Ti II 3080 and the doublet Mg II 2800 simultaneously either in emission or in absorption in late-type stars. Using the high-resolution spectrometers onboard Copernicus and BUSS, it is found that stars which display Mg II 2800 strongly in emission do not have a corresponding emission feature at 3080.

On the 3d2 4s2, 3d3 4s1, and 3d4 states of Ti

The energies of the 3F (3d2 4s2), 5F (3d3 4s1) and 5D (3d4) states of Ti are investigated on the basis of MCSCF and CI calculations. Following SCF calculations using a basis set including the primitive set of Wachters (1970) and the diffuse d function of Hay (1977), four full-electron CI calculations involving the 3d and 4s electrons were performed to obtain the natural orbitals, and the full CI calculations were repeated. MCSCF calculations then performed using the most important configurations of the natural orbital basis are found to be in agreement with those of Dunning (1980), but to differ from CI results. CI(SD) calculations including single and double excitations from the MCSCF reference are found to be in agreement with the full CI but differ from experimental energy separations. Further calculations reveal that Dunning's MCSCF description is an oversimplication of the problem, and that the 5F-5D separation at the CI(SD) level is in good agreement with experiment for all basis sets but the 3F state is too low relative to the 5F and 5D states.

Effects of geometric variables on rub characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V

Experiments simulating rub interactions between Ti-6Al-4V blade tips and various seal materials were conducted. The number of blade tips and the blade tip geometry were varied to determine their effects on rub forces and on wear phenomena. Contact was found to be quite unsteady for all blade tip geometries except for those incorporating deliberately rounded blade tips. The unsteady contact was characterized by long periods of rubbing contact and increasing blade tip that terminated in sudden rapid metal removal, sometimes accompanied by tearing and disruption of porous seal material under the rub surface. A model describing the blade tip loading is proposed and is based on the propagation of an elastic stress wave through the seal material as the seal material is dynamically compressed by the blade tip leading edge.

Contact resistivities of sputtered TiN and Ti-TiN metallizations on solar-cell-type-silicon

The resistivities of TiN and Ti-TiN contacts on a shallow junction solar-cell-type silicon substrate have been determined by the method of the transmission line model. The contacts investigated are shown to be suitable for standard solar cells from an electrical point of view. Contact resistivity values of the order of 0.0001 ohm/sq cm as obtained for the n(+)Si-TiSi2-TiN contact system may be acceptable for concentrations up to 100 times, but lower values are necessary beyond this point.

The effects of Ni, Mo, Ti and Si on the mechanical properties of Cr free Mn steel (Fe-25Mn-5Al-2C)

The FeMnAlC alloys may hold potential as Cr-free replacements for high strategic material iron base superalloys, but little is known about their intermediate temperature (650 C to 870 C) mechanical properties. The effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of model FeMnAlC alloys were studied. Results showed that modified FeMnAlC alloys had promising short term, intermediate temperature properties but had relatively poor stress rupture lives at 172 MPa and 788 C. Room temperature and 788 C tensile strength of FeMnAlC alloys were better than common cast stainless steels. Changes in room temperature tensile and 788 C tensile strength and ductility, and 788 C stress rupture life were correlated with changes in Ni, Mo, Ti, and Si levels due to alloying effects on interstitial carbon levels and carbide morphology. Fe-25Mn-5Al-2C had a very poor stress rupture life at 172 MPa and 788 C. Addition of carbide-forming elements improved the stress rupture life.

The effects of weld-repair and hot isostatic pressing on the fracture properties of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn ELI castings

The Ti-5Al-2.5Sn extremely low interstitial alloy employed in the large castings which form the critical attachment fittings of the Space Shuttle External Tank was selected because of its high fracture resistance at cryogenic temperatures. Casting was selected over alternative fabrication methods because of its lower cost and adaptability to design changes, although it was found necessary to weld-repair surface and subsurface casting defects in order to reduce the scrap rate and maintain the inherent cost advantage of the castings. Hot Isostatic Pressing was experimentally found to heal the surface and internal defects of the castings, but did not improve tensile or fracture properties and was therefore rejected as a production technique. Production castings are instead weld-repaired, without any mechanical property degradation.

Residual mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V after simulated Space Shuttle reentry

Oxidation and embrittlement are concerns in use of titanium foils for shielding advanced space transportation system vehicles during Earth reentry. Ti-6Al-4V in 0.003 in. and 0.035 in. thicknesses were exposed to multiple cycles of simulated space transportation system ascent/reentry conditions at temperatures ranging from 1000 F to 1200 F. Residual mechanical tests and metallurgical analyses were made on the specimens after exposure. Results show that tensile elongation is the mechanical property most affected by the reentry environment. Results are presented to show a comparison of residual properties of foil specimens from static oxidation exposure and cyclic oxidation exposure.

Fluorescent excitation of Fe 2, Mn 2, Ti 2, N 1 lines by V 4, N 5, O 6: Emission lines in the spectra of symbiotic stars and Seyfert galaxies

Analysis of the published IUE and ground based high resolution spectra of symbiotic stars, particularly RR Tel, shows that the dominant excitation mechanism of Fe II, Mn II, Ti II, and N I lines is the selective fluorescent excitation of some levels by the strong C IV, N V, and O VI emission lines. The same mechanism should work for the excitation of Fe II lines in the spectra of Seyfert galaxies and Q60's whose emission spectra are quite similar to those of symbiotic stars. The similarities and differences between the fluroescent excitation mechanism reported herein and the Bowen's mechanism is analyzed.

Effect of low temperature on fatigue and fracture properties of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn(ELI) for use in engine components

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the characteristics of the Ti-5Al-2.5Sn (ELI) alloy used in a fuel pump impeller at cryogenic temperatures. Tension, fracture toughness, and fatigue crack propagation data were collected determining the effect of frequency and load ratio on crack propagation. The results revealed that tensile strength increased significantly at 20 K compared to room temperature and fracture toughness was reduced at cryogenic temperatures. The fatigue crack growth rate was not sensitive to experimental conditions and there were only minimal crack orientation effects. Different frequencies produced no effect. At various temperatures and frequencies a load ratio increase resulted in higher crack growth rates. At low stress intensity levels the fatigue rate for both temperatures was the same; however, at high stress intensity levels the crack growth rate at 20 K increased because of the decrease in fracture toughness. The results correlated well with previous data.

Creep-fatigue interaction of titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Cb-1Ta-0.8Mo at room temperature

The present investigation is concerned with the mutual influence of creep and fatigue in the case of Ti-6211, which represents a new weldable, stress-corrosion resistant alloy. Attention is given to the effect of creep on fatigue, the effect of fatigue on creep, and microstructural studies. It is found that prior creep in the amounts investigated, from 0.2 percent to 2.7 percent, is beneficial to low-cycle fatigue life. Hold time at peak strain is found to be beneficial to low-cycle fatigue life. Hold time at constant stress has no effect on low-cycle fatigue when specimens are cycled only once between hold times; but increasing fatigue loading for 50 or more cycles between hold times can prolong the fatigue life. There is an acceleration of creep by cyclic loading when comparison of cyclic and static creep is based on mean stress.

Zirconium, hafnium, and rare earth element partition coefficients for ilmenite and other minerals in high-Ti lunar mare basalts - An experimental study

Partition coefficients were determined for Gd, Lu, Hf and Zr among ilmenite, armalcolite, and synthetic high-Ti mare basaltic melts at temperatures from 1122 deg to 1150 deg, and at oxygen fugacities of IW x 10 exp 0.5, by in situ analysis with an electron microprobe, using samples doped to present concentration levels. Coefficients for Zr were also measured for samples containing 600-1600 ppm Zr using this microprobe. In addition, coefficients were determined for Hf and Zr between chromian ulvospinel and melt, for Hf between pigeonite and melt, and for Lu between olivine and melt by microprobe analysis of samples doped to present levels. Values measured using the microprobe were in agreement with the values measured by analyzing mineral separates from the same run products by isotope dilution. Coefficient values for ilmenite are less than 0.01 for the LREE, are around 0.1 for the HREE, and are several times greater than this for Zr and Hf.

Effect of oxygen barrier coatings on oxidation and embrittlement of Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo foil in heat shield applications

Because of the loss of ductility with exposure to oxidizing conditions, long time applications of titanium alloys have been limited to temperatures below 700 K and short time applications have been limited to temperatures below 815 K. Oxygen barrier coatings for shielding Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo alloy from oxidation during exposure to high temperatures were studied using foil gage specimens. The coatings included micrometer-thick sputtered SiO2 and chemical-vapor-deposited silicate layers both with and without an aluminum basecoat. The oxidation rates and resistance to embrittlement of the coated specimens were significantly better than those of the uncoated specimens.

Oxidation and embrittlement of Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo alloy

A thermogravimetric analysis monitoring study has been conducted for Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo in the 593-760 C range, with a view to its total oxidation kinetics in laboratory air. In addition, tensile elongation was obtained for selected foil specimens after their exposure to simulated Space Shuttle reentry conditions. The total weight gain with time exhibited two parabolic stages separated by a transient region which is the result of a simultaneous increase in the parabolic growth rate constant for the oxide and in oxygen solubility at the oxide-metal interface. A model for the total oxidation kinetics accounting for the two individual components (oxide growth and solid solution formation) is proposed; the activation energy for oxygen diffusion in the alpha-solid solution is shown to approximate the activation energy for the degradation of tensile elongation of the alloy in its foil gage condition.

A self-injection locked, Q-switched, line-narrowed Ti:Al2O3 laser

Line-narrowing, Q-switched, and self-injection locking are studied independently and as a system. Line narrowing is shown both theoretically and experimentally to depend on the inverse square root of the pulse evolution time interval. Q switching of the Ti:Al2O3 laser is demonstrated and the laser output energy as a function of the Q-switch delay is investigated. Self-injection is demonstrated and the operation of the laser is explored as a function of loss and the Q-switch delay. Self-injection locking is demonstrated and the performance as a function of the Q-switch delay is determined.
