Electric field determination in transient plasmas: in situ & non-invasive methods

Abstract One of the primary basic plasma parameters within transient nonequilibrium plasmas is the reduced electric field strength, roughly understood as the ratio of the electrical energy given to the charged species between two collisions. While physical probes have historically been used for electric field measurements, recent advances in high intensity lasers and sensitive detection methods have allowed for non-invasive optical electric field determination in nearly any discharge configuration with time-resolution up to the sub-nanosecond range and sub-millimeter spatial resolution. This topical review serves to highlight several non-invasive methods for in situ electric field strength determination in transient plasmas ranging from high vacuum environments to atmospheric pressure and above. We will discuss the advantages and proper implementation of (i) laser induced fluorescence dip spectroscopy for measurements in low pressure RF discharges, (ii) optical emission spectroscopy based methods for nitrogen, helium or hydrogen containing discharges, (iii) electric field induced coherent Raman scattering, and (iv) electric field induced second harmonic generation. The physical mechanism for each method will be described as well as basic implementation and highlighting recent results.

Identifying Transient Candidates in the Dark Energy Survey Using Convolutional Neural Networks

The ability to discover new transient candidates via image differencing without direct human intervention is an important task in observational astronomy. For these kind of image classification problems, machine learning techniques such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown remarkable success. In this work, we present the results of an automated transient candidate identification on images with CNNs for an extant data set from the Dark Energy Survey Supernova program, whose main focus was on using Type Ia supernovae for cosmology. By performing an architecture search of CNNs, we identify networks that efficiently select non-artifacts (e.g., supernovae, variable stars, AGN, etc.) from artifacts (image defects, mis-subtractions, etc.), achieving the efficiency of previous work performed with random Forests, without the need to expend any effort in feature identification. The CNNs also help us identify a subset of mislabeled images. Performing a relabeling of the images in this subset, the resulting classification with CNNs is significantly better than previous results, lowering the false positive rate by 27% at a fixed missed detection rate of 0.05.

Advances in 3D transient plasma dynamics and control through MHD and hybrid fluid-kinetic simulations with JOREK

Transient phenomena and their control are of high relevance in magnetic confinement fusion plasmas to guarantee a stable and safe plasma operation. Interpretative simulations can maximize the insights gained from experiments on present machines and predictive simulations can help in the preparation of design, mitigation techniques and operational scenarios for future devices. In this article, we provide an overview of recent advances and novel scientific results obtained with the 3D non-linear hybrid fluid-kinetic code JOREK, covering physics of plasma transients from the core to the scrape-off layer (SOL) both for tokamak and stellarator devices. Substantial progress was made in the physics understanding, model validation with experiments and experiment interpretation, thus, giving confidence for predictions to devices like DTT, ITER and DEMO. The topics addressed comprise a wide range: the edge physics of new operation scenarios and edge localized mode suppression; major disruptions with a focus on runaway electrons and vertical displacement events as well as disruption mitigation by shattered pellet injection; the physics mechanisms and operational limits of the flux pumping regime for sawtooth control; MHD limits of stellarators and work towards incorporating advanced edge/SOL/exhaust dynamics; continuing improvements of the code for more efficient hybrid simulations on conventional and accelerated high performance computing architectures.

An AMUSING look at the host of the periodic nuclear transient ASASSN-14ko reveals a second AGN

ABSTRACT We present Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral-field spectroscopy of ESO 253−G003, which hosts a known active galactic nucleus (AGN) and the periodic nuclear transient ASASSN-14ko, observed as part of the All-weather MUse Supernova Integral-field of Nearby Galaxies survey. The MUSE observations reveal that the inner region hosts two AGN separated by $1.4\pm 0.1~\rm {kpc}$ (≈1${_{.}^{\prime\prime}}$7). The brighter nucleus has asymmetric broad permitted emission-line profiles and is associated with the archival AGN designation. The fainter nucleus does not have a broad emission-line component but exhibits other AGN characteristics, including $\hbox{$v_{\rm {FWHM}}$} \approx 700~\hbox{km~s$^{-1}$}$ forbidden line emission, $\rm{\log _{10}(\rm{[O\,\small {III}]}/\rm{H\beta})} \approx 1.1$, and high-excitation potential emission lines, such as [Fe vii] λ6086 and He ii λ4686. The host galaxy exhibits a disturbed morphology with large kpc-scale tidal features, potential outflows from both nuclei, and a likely superbubble. A circular relativistic disc model cannot reproduce the asymmetric broad emission-line profiles in the brighter nucleus, but two non-axisymmetric disc models provide good fits to the broad emission-line profiles: an elliptical disc model and a circular disc + spiral arm model. Implications for the periodic nuclear transient ASASSN-14ko are discussed.

Transient quasi-periodic oscillations at γ-rays in the TeV blazar PKS 1510-089

ABSTRACT We present periodicity search analyses on the γ-ray light curve of the TeV blazar PKS 1510-089 observed by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We report the detection of two transient quasi-periodic oscillations: A 3.6-d QPO during the outburst in 2009 that lasted five cycles (MJD 54906–54923); and a periodicity of 92 d spanning over 650 d from 2018 to 2020 (MJD 58200–58850), which lasted for seven cycles. We employed the Lomb–Scargle periodogram, Weighted Wavelet Z-transform, redfit, and the Monte Carlo light-curve simulation techniques to find any periodicity and the corresponding significance. The 3.6-d QPO was detected at a moderate significance of ∼3.5σ, while the detection significance of the 92-d QPO was ∼7.0σ. We explore a few physical models for such transient QPOs including a binary black hole system, precession of the jet, a non-axisymmetric instability rotating around the central black hole near the innermost stable circular orbit, the presence of quasi-equidistant magnetic islands inside the jet, and a geometric model involving a plasma blob moving helically inside a curved jet.

Transient fading X-ray emission detected during the optical rise of a tidal disruption event

ABSTRACT We report on the SRG/eROSITA detection of ultra-soft ($kT=47^{+5}_{-5}$ eV) X-ray emission (LX =$2.5^{+0.6}_{-0.5} \times 10^{43}$ erg s−1) from the tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate AT 2022dsb ∼14 d before peak optical brightness. As the optical luminosity increases after the eROSITA detection, then the 0.2–2 keV observed flux decays, decreasing by a factor of ∼39 over the 19 d after the initial X-ray detection. Multi-epoch optical spectroscopic follow-up observations reveal transient broad Balmer emission lines and a broad He ii 4686 Å emission complex with respect to the pre-outburst spectrum. Despite the early drop in the observed X-ray flux, the He ii 4686 Å complex is still detected for ∼40 d after the optical peak, suggesting the persistence of an obscured hard ionizing source in the system. Three outflow signatures are also detected at early times: (i) blueshifted H α emission lines in a pre-peak optical spectrum, (ii) transient radio emission, and (iii) blueshifted Ly α absorption lines. The joint evolution of this early-time X-ray emission, the He ii 4686 Å complex, and these outflow signatures suggests that the X-ray emitting disc (formed promptly in this TDE) is still present after optical peak, but may have been enshrouded by optically thick debris, leading to the X-ray faintness in the months after the disruption. If the observed early-time properties in this TDE are not unique to this system, then other TDEs may also be X-ray bright at early times and become X-ray faint upon being veiled by debris launched shortly after the onset of circularization.

Optical evolution of AT 2024wpp: the high-velocity outflows in Cow-like transients are consistent with high spherical symmetry

ABSTRACT We present the analysis of optical/near-infrared (NIR) data and host galaxy properties of a bright, extremely rapidly evolving transient, AT 2024wpp, which resembles the enigmatic AT 2018cow. AT 2024wpp rose to a peak brightness of $c=-21.9$ mag in 4.3 d and remained above the half-maximum brightness for only 6.7 d. The blackbody fits to the photometry show that the event remained persistently hot ($T\gtrsim 20\, 000$ K) with a rapidly receding photosphere ($v\sim 11\, 500$ km s$^{-1}$), similarly to AT 2018cow albeit with a several times larger photosphere. $JH$ photometry reveals an NIR excess over the thermal emission at $\sim +20$ d, indicating a presence of an additional component. The spectra are consistent with blackbody emission throughout our spectral sequence ending at $+21.9$ d, showing a tentative, very broad emission feature at $\sim 5500$ Å – implying that the optical photosphere is likely within a near-relativistic outflow. Furthermore, reports of strong X-ray and radio emission cement the nature of AT 2024wpp as a likely Cow-like transient. AT 2024wpp is the second event of the class with optical polarimetry. Our $BVRI$ observations obtained from $+6.1$ to $+14.4$ d show a low polarization of $P\lesssim 0.5$ per cent across all bands, similar to AT 2018cow that was consistent with $P\sim 0$ per cent during the same outflow-driven phase. In the absence of evidence for a preferential viewing angle, it is unlikely that both events would have shown low polarization in the case that their photospheres were aspherical. As such, we conclude that the near-relativistic outflows launched in these events are likely highly spherical, but polarimetric observations of further events are crucial to constrain their ejecta geometry and stratification in detail.

Photometric classification of Hyper Suprime-Cam transients using machine learning

Abstract The advancement of technology has resulted in a rapid increase in supernova (SN) discoveries. The Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) transient survey, conducted from fall 2016 through spring 2017, yielded 1824 SN candidates. This gave rise to the need for fast type classification for spectroscopic follow-up and prompted us to develop a machine learning algorithm using a deep neural network with highway layers. This algorithm is trained by actual observed cadence and filter combinations such that we can directly input the observed data array without any interpretation. We tested our model with a dataset from the LSST classification challenge (Deep Drilling Field). Our classifier scores an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.996 for binary classification (SN Ia or non-SN Ia) and 95.3% accuracy for three-class classification (SN Ia, SN Ibc, or SN II). Application of our binary classification to HSC transient data yields an AUC score of 0.925. With two weeks of HSC data since the first detection, this classifier achieves 78.1% accuracy for binary classification, and the accuracy increases to 84.2% with the full dataset. This paper discusses the potential use of machine learning for SN type classification purposes.

On the nature of apparent transient sources on the National Geographic Society–Palomar Observatory Sky Survey glass copy plates

Abstract We examine critically recent claims for the presence of above-atmosphere optical transients in publicly available digitized scans of Schmidt telescope photographic plate material derived from the National Geographic Society–Palomar Observatory Sky Survey. We employ the publicly available SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey catalogues to examine statistically the morphology of the sources. We develop a simple, objective, and automated image classification scheme based on a random forest decision tree classifier. We find that the putative transients are likely to be spurious artefacts of the photographic emulsion. We suggest a possible cause of the appearance of these images as resulting from the copying procedure employed to disseminate glass copy survey atlas sets in the era before large-scale digitization programmes.

Simulating transient heat transfer in graphene at finite Knudsen number via the Boltzmann transport equation and molecular dynamics

The phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) with the relaxation time approximation (RTA) scattering model is used to calculate transient temperature profiles in graphene, and the results are compared to analogous molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. For the BTE calculations, the phonon dispersion relation and frequency-dependent scattering rates are obtained from a combination of MD data and semi-empirical power-law expressions for the normal and Umklapp phonon lifetimes. The dimensions and initial temperature conditions of graphene are varied to study the size and temperature dependence of thermal transport physics at the mesoscopic scale. Good quantitative agreement to within 5% is found between the BTE and MD results, over a wide range of temperatures and lengthscales of the temperature variation in the graphene sheet. Small differences are attributed to the inaccuracy of the RTA as applied to graphene, and to neglecting four-phonon scattering in the BTE simulations. The present results may further understanding in applications such as the transient heating of nanoelectronics.

Transient magnetoelastic coupling in CrSBr

Recent research has revealed remarkable properties of the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals layered crystal CrSBr, which is both a semiconductor and an A-type antiferromagnet. Here, in this study, we show the role of strong magnetoelastic coupling in the generation and propagation of coherent magnons in CrSBr. Time- and spatially resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy reveals two time-varying transient strain fields induced by out-of-plane transverse and in-plane longitudinal lattice displacements. These transient strain fields launch coherent wavepackets of magnons, optical and acoustic, at 24.6 ± 0.8 and 33.4 ± 0.5GHz, respectively. These findings suggest mechanisms for controlling and manipulating coherent magnons from distinct magnetoelastic couplings in this 2D van der Waals magnetic semiconductor.

Slow dynamics in a single bead with mechanical conditioning and transient heating

The contact stiffness of an aluminum bead confined between two slabs diminishes upon mechanical conditioning, and then recovers like log(t) after the conditioning ceases. Here that structure is evaluated for its response to transient heating and cooling, with and without accompanying conditioning vibrations. It is found that, under heating or cooling alone, stiffness changes are mostly consistent with temperature dependent material moduli; there is little or no slow dynamics. Hybrid tests in which vibration conditioning is followed by heating or cooling lead to recoveries that begin like log(t) and then become more complex. On subtracting the known response to heating or cooling alone we discern the influence of higher or lower temperatures on slow dynamic recovery from vibrations. It is found that heating accelerates the initial log(t) recovery, but by an amount more than predicted by an Arrhenius model of thermally activated barrier penetrations. Furthermore, transient cooling has no discernable effect, in contrast to the Arrhenius prediction that it slows recovery.

Anisotropic X-Ray Scattering of Transiently Oriented Water

We study the structural dynamics of liquid water by time-resolved anisotropic x-ray scattering under the optical Kerr effect condition. In this way, we can separate the anisotropic scattering decay of 160 fs from the delayed temperature increase of ~ 0.1 K occurring at 1 ps and quantify transient changes in the O-O pair distribution function. Polarizable molecular dynamics simulations reproduce well the experiment, indicating transient alignment of molecules along the electric field, which shortens the nearest-neighbor distances. In addition, analysis of the simulated water local structure provides evidence that two hypothesized fluctuating water configurations exhibit different polarizability.

Dual Mechanism for Transient Capacitance Anomaly in Improper Ferroelectrics

Negative capacitance (NC) effects in ferroelectrics can potentially break fundamental limits of power dissipation known as “Boltzmann tyranny.” However, the origin of transient NC of ferroelectrics, which is attributed to two different mechanisms involving free-energy landscape and nucleation, is under intense debate. Here, we report the coexistence of transient NC and an S-shaped anomaly during the switching of ferroelectric hexagonal ferrites capacitor in an RC circuit. The early-stage NC arises from the nucleation process, while the late-stage S-shaped anomaly corresponds to a nascent NC associated with the free-energy landscape. The entire waveform can be reproduced using a hybrid model that simultaneously incorporates these two mechanisms. These results highlight the multivariable free-energy landscape of hexagonal ferrites that enables an abrupt change of the internal field and demonstrate that the two mechanisms are not mutually exclusive, resolving the long-standing debate. In conclusion, the behavior of the S-shaped anomaly also provides a pathway to extract parameters of free-energy landscape and switching dynamics.

Transient electron scavengers modulate carrier density at a polar/nonpolar perovskite oxide heterojunction

Here, we show how transient electron scavengers can be utilized to control the carrier concentration at polar/non-polar perovskite interfaces. By combining quantitative synchrotron x-ray-based interface structure determination with ab initio modeling, we demonstrate that Nd vacancy formation and the resulting formation of Nd adatoms, stabilized by oxygen scavengers at the growth front, can quantitatively account for the decreased carrier concentration at the SrTiO 3 /n NdTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 (001) heterojunction for n = 1 unit cell. This study yields new insights into growth mechanisms and the effect of transient species and defects on the electronic properties of oxide heterojunctions.

Vanishing dynamic strength measured in a transient high-pressure phase of tin

This work reports two independent experimental estimations of the dynamic strength of the body-centered tetragonal (bct) 𝛾 phase of tin, which occurs at pressures above about 9 GPa and transforms promptly back to the ambient 𝛽 phase upon pressure release. Measuring strength in such a transient high-pressure phase is challenging. One measurement used free-surface Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities generated with gas gun impact. Another set of measurements used ramp-release loading in a pulsed-power facility. Strength estimations came from comparison to simulations using a comprehensive multiphase modeling framework that includes equation of state, shear moduli, and strength separately for each phase, and treats mixed-phase regions. Both experimental methods found the 𝛾-phase strength to be very low, within experimental uncertainty of zero. The existing literature on other materials, by contrast, almost universally reports higher strength in transient high-pressure phases compared with ambient phases. Recent Molecular-Dynamics simulations on tin in the literature showed almost zero deviatoric strength during a deformation-induced bct → bct transformation in which one of the 𝛾-phase 𝑎 axes “flips” to the 𝑐 axis. This reorientation currently provides the most plausible explanation for the low observed strength in 𝛾-phase tin.

A Universal Controller for Grid-Forming Inverters in Microgrid during Islanding for Low Transient Current

This paper presents a universal controller to reduce the transient current during islanding of microgrid. In the proposed universal controller, two sets of semi-parallel paths are formed, where one set produces voltage and phase-angle references for the grid-following (GFL) mode, and the other set produces the voltage and phase-angle references for the grid-forming (GFM) mode of operation for the inverters. Herein, the controller enables an inverter to universally operate in GFL and GFM mode, whereas, only one set of voltage and phase-angle reference is engaged for PWM signal generation. When the microgrid is disconnected from the grid, the universal controller switches the voltage and phase-angle references from GFL to GFM mode. The proposed controller ensures lower transient current by keeping the two sets of semi-parallel paths synchronized throughout the operation of the inverter and enabling seamless transition between the modes. The proposed controller is verified through hardware experiments under different scenarios in a laboratory scale microgrid for inverters transitioning from GFL to GFM mode after islanding.

Electromagnetic Transient Simulation Algorithms for Evaluation of Large-Scale Extreme Fast Charging Systems (Distribution Grid Models)

The distribution and transmission grids are observing an increased penetration of power electronics in loads and generations. For example, there is increasing interest in integrating in extreme fast charging (XFC) systems for fast charging of electrical vehicles. As these systems are integrated, developing high-fidelity electromagnetic transient model of XFC systems in distribution grids and evaluating their interactions with the power grid would be of significant interest. This model will be utilized for design of XFC systems, to identify upgrades in distribution and/or transmission grids, for planning purposes by transmission planners or operators or owners, among others. It can also be utilized in operations for improved reliable performance of the grid and/or XFC station. The challenge with simulating these models is the high computational complexity introduced by the large number of states present in the system and the time-step needed to simulate the system. In this paper, advanced simulations algorithms are applied to reduce the computational complexity of simulating large-scale XFC systems. The algorithms include numerical stiffness-based segregation, time constant-based segregation, clustering and aggregation on differential algebraic equations (DAEs), and multi-order integration approaches. While the first three algorithms split the matrix that needs to be inverted from a large matrix to much smaller matrices, the final algorithm reduces the computational burden of applying higher-order integration approaches in the complete system. The comparison made in the previous sentence is with respect to use of homogeneous integration approaches used in conventional electromagnetic transient simulators like power systems computer aided design (PSCAD). The approaches mentioned here have resulted in speed-up of 36x in the simulation of a single distribution system with 15 XFCs.
