Material, Phase, and Interface Stability of Photovoltaic Perovskite: A Perspective

The past decade has witnessed the unprecedented boost of power conversion efficiency (PCE) of photovoltaics based on halide perovskite materials since its early discovery. Despite its remarkably good performance, long-term stability is yet one of the last barriers before commercializing halide perovskite photovoltaics is possible. In this perspective, we discuss the challenges and concurrently the strategies regarding the stability of the perovskite materials, photoactive crystal phases, and the performance as well as stability limiting interfaces. Future perspectives of stable halide perovskite and perovskite solar cells are also proposed to shine light on letting perovskite technology satisfy long-term operation warranty.

Topological Bismuth (1 1̅ 0) Facet for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Cathode in Fuel Cells

The performance of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells is strongly dependent on the efficiency of the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, we report both two-dimensional (4 monolayer, ML) and three-dimensional Bi (16 ML) (11̅0) facets deliver a strong correlation between nontrivial topological surface states and low electrochemical overpotential toward ORR. Both topological Bi (11̅0) film and slab have two slightly gapped (9–45 meV) Dirac cones with the invariant Z 2 =1, derived from the parity products for the occupied states at four time-reversal invariant momentum points. By contrast, the Bi (110) film is stabilized as an ordinary insulator due to atomic buckling. The much lower thermodynamic ORR overpotential (η = 0.58 V) and higher H 2 O selectivity by four steps of H + /e – transfer are obtained on the topological Bi (11̅0) surface compared with the nontopological (110) facet (η = 0.84 V). This promotional effect can be attributed to the accumulation of topological surface bands (Bi 6p orbitals) near the Fermi energy, which provide stronger electronic transport channels along the surface Bi–Bi and Bi–O bonds. Finally, a 16 ML Bi (11̅0) slab is also constructed to simulate the topological (11̅0) surface of three-dimensional bulk Bi as a topological crystalline insulator (TCI). Furthermore, the consistent topological properties and slightly lower thermodynamic ORR overpotential (η = 0.53 V) are also observed on the thicker slab.

First-Principles Characterization of Surface Phonons of Halide Perovskite CsPbI 3 and Their Role in Stabilization

The stability of halide perovskites has been a long-standing issue for their real-world application. Approaches to improve stability include nanostructuring, dimensionality reduction, and strain engineering, where surfaces play an important role in the formation of a stable structure. To understand the mechanism we compute the lattice dynamics of the surface of CsPbI 3 using density functional theory. We demonstrate, for the first time, that CsPbI 3 crystals exhibit surface phonons that are localized on the outermost layers of the slabs, and we perform a complete symmetry characterization including an identification of the Raman/IR active modes. These surface phonons are present in the optically active cubic phase but are absent in the optically inactive "yellow" phase. Furthermore, we show that the surface suppresses bulk instabilities by hardening soft modes of the bulk cubic phase, resulting in phase stabilization and quenching of dynamical disorder. Finally, this study is fundamental for understanding the structural behavior of halide perovskite materials with high surface area-to-volume ratios, and for guiding stabilization strategies.

Interplay between Ultrafast Electronic and Librational Dynamics in Liquid Nitrobenzene Probed with Two-Color Four-Wave Mixing

Here, we present an experimental and theoretical study of the interplay between ultrafast electron dynamics and librational dynamics in liquid nitrobenzene. A femtosecond ultraviolet pulse and two femtosecond near-infrared pulses interact with nitrobenzene molecules, generating a four-wave mixing nonlinear signal measured in the Optical Kerr Effect geometry. The signal is measured to be nonzero only at negative time delays, corresponding to the near-infrared pulses arriving before the ultraviolet pulse. We perform time-dependent Quantum Master Equation calculations with classical libration to simulate the experiment. The simulations support the conclusion that the near-infrared pulses launch librational motion while creating electronic coherences resulting in a libration-modulated electronic nonlinear response. The analysis of the phase-matched four-wave mixing signals suggests a nonparametric process leaving the molecules in an excited electronic state, providing new insight into ultrafast nonlinear optical interactions in liquids and advancing toward probing ultrafast electronic coherences in complex molecular liquids.

Comprehensive Detection of Single Amino Acid Variants and Evaluation of Their Deleterious Potential in a PANC-1 Cell Line

Identifying single amino acid variants (SAAVs) in cancer is critical for precision oncology. Several advanced algorithms are now available to identify SAAVs but attempts to combine different algorithms and optimize them on large datasets to achieve a more comprehensive coverage of SAAVs have not been implemented. Herein we report an expanded detection of SAAVs in the PANC-1 cell line using three different strategies, which results in identification of 540 SAAVs in the mass spectrometry data, the most comprehensive coverage yet reported. Among the set of 540 SAAVs, 79 are evaluated as deleterious SAAVs based on analysis using novel AssVar software in which one of the driver mutations found in each protein of KRAS, TP53 and SLC37A4 is further validated using independent selected reaction monitoring (SRM) analysis. Our study represents the most comprehensive discovery of SAAVs to date and the first large-scale detection of deleterious SAAVs in the PANC-1 cell line. This work may serve as the basis for future research in pancreatic cancer and personal immunotherapy and treatment.

Phase Transition and Criticality of Methane Confined in Nanopores

For the first time, the phase transition and criticality of methane confined in nanoporous media are measured. The measurement is performed by establishing an experimental setup utilizing a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) capable of operating under very low temperatures as well as high pressures to detect the capillary phase transition of methane inside nanopores. By performing experiments along isochoric cooling paths, both the capillary condensation and the bulk condensation of methane are detected. Here, the pore critical point (PCP) of nanoconfined methane is also determined and then used to derive the parameters of a previously developed self-consistent equation of state based on the Generalized van der Waals (vdW) partition function. Using this parameter, the equation of state can predict the capillary-condensation curves that agree well with the experimental data.

Uniform high-k amorphous native oxide synthesized by oxygen plasma for top-gated transistors

The integration of high-k gate dielectrics with two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting channel materials is essential for high-performance and low-power electronics. However, the conformal deposition of a uniform high-k dielectric with sub-1-nm equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) and high interface quality on high-mobility 2D semiconductors is still challenging. Here we report a facile approach to synthesize a uniform high-k (ε r ~ 22) amorphous native oxide Bi 2 SeO x on the 2D semiconducting Bi2O2Se using O 2 plasma at room temperature. The conformal native oxide can directly serve as gate dielectrics with EOT of ~0.9 nm, while the original properties of underlying 2D Bi 2 O 2 Se is preserved. Furthermore, high-resolution area-selective oxidation of Bi 2 O 2 Se is achieved to fabricate discrete electronic components. This facile integration of a 2D semiconductor and its high-k native oxide holds high promise for next-generation nanoelectronics.

Layer Edge States Stabilized by Internal Electric Fields in Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have been intensively explored in recent years due to their tunable band gaps and exciton binding energies and increased stability with respect to three-dimensional (3D) hybrid perovskites. Experimental observations suggest the existence of localized edge states in 2D hybrid perovskites which facilitate extremely efficient electron-hole dissociation and long carrier lifetimes, while multiple origins for their formation have been proposed. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that layer edge states are stabilized by internal electric fields created by polarized molecular alignment of organic cations in 2D hybrid perovskites when they are two layers or thicker. Overall, our study gives a simple physical explanation of the edge state formation, and facilitating the design and manipulation of layer edge states for optoelectronic applications.

Understanding and Manipulating Helical Nanofilaments in Binary Systems with Achiral Dopants

Here, in this paper, we report the relationship between helical pitch of the helical nanofilament (HNF) phase formed by bent-core molecule NOBOW and the concentration of achiral dopants 5CB and octane, using linearly polarized resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSoXS). Utilizing theory-based simulation, which fits well with the experiments, the molecular helices in the filament were probed and the superstructure of helical 5CB directed by groove of HNFs was observed. Quantitative pitch determination with RSoXS reveals that helical pitch variation is related to 5CB concentration with no temperature dependence. Doping rodlike immiscible 5CB led to a pitch shortening of up to 30%, which was attributed to a change in interfacial tension. By shedding light not only on phase behavior of binary systems but also enabling control over pitch length, our work may benefit various applications of HNF-containing binary systems, including optical rotation devices, circularly polarized light emitters, and chirality transfer agents.

P2-Type Moisture-Stable and High-Voltage-Tolerable Cathodes for High-Energy and Long-Life Sodium-Ion Batteries

P2-Na 0.67 Ni 0.33 Mn 0.67 O 2 represents a promising cathode for Na-ion batteries, but it suffers from severe structural degradation upon storing in a humid atmosphere and cycling at a high cutoff voltage. Here we propose an in situ construction to achieve simultaneous material synthesis and Mg/Sn cosubstitution of Na 0.67 Ni 0.33 Mn 0.67 O 2 via one-pot solid-state sintering. Here, the materials exhibit superior structural reversibility and moisture insensitivity. In-operando XRD reveals an essential correlation between cycling stability and phase reversibility, whereas Mg substitution suppressed the P2–O2 phase transition by forming a new Z phase, and Mg/Sn cosubstitution enhanced the P2–Z transition reversibility benefiting from strong Sn–O bonds. DFT calculations disclosed high chemical tolerance to moisture, as the adsorption energy to H 2 O was lower than that of the pure Na 0.67 Ni 0.33 Mn 0.67 O 2 . A representative Na 0.67 Ni 0.23 Mg 0.1 Mn 0.65 Sn 0.02 O 2 cathode exhibits high reversible capacities of 123 mAh g –1 (10 mA g –1 ), 110 mAh g –1 (200 mA g –1 ), and 100 mAh g –1 (500 mA g –1 ) and a high capacity retention of 80% (500 mA g –1 , 500 cycles).

Co 2 Mo 6 S 8 Catalyzes Nearly Exclusive Electrochemical Nitrate Conversion to Ammonia with Enzyme-like Activity

Electrocatalytic nitrate to ammonia conversion is a key reaction for energy and environmental sustainability. This reaction involves complex multi electron and proton transfer steps, and is impeded by the lack of catalyst for promoting both reactivity and ammonia selectivity. Here, we demonstrate active motifs based on the Chevrel phase Co 2 Mo 6 S 8 exhibit an enzyme-like high turnover frequency of ~95.1 s –1 for nitrate electroreduction to ammonia. We reveal strong synergy of multiple binding sites on this catalyst, such that the ligand effect of Co steers H ad* toward hydrogenation other than hydrogen evolution, the ensemble effect of Co, and the spatial confinement effect that promote the full hydrogenation of NO x to ammonia without N–N coupling. The catalyst exhibits almost exclusive ammonia conversion with a Faradaic efficiency of 97.1% and ammonia yielding rate of 115.5 mmol·g cat –1 ·h –1 in neutral electrolytes. The high activity was also confirmed in electrolytes with dilute nitrate and high chloride concentrations.
