Interfacial compositional disordering in InGaAs/GaAs quantom dots has been used to tune their intersublevel energy spaceings (delta E subscript [(i + 1) - i]).
Planar submillimeter circuits are slowly replacing whisker-contacted devices at frequencies above 100 GHz, but in many cases the size constraints brought on by the short wavelengths associated with high frequency operation have not been adequeately addressed. Also, reproducibility becomes more important as we make the transition from tunable, whisker-based circuits to more monolithic designs. We are continuing to develop new circuites with more reproducible characteristics.

We report on the phase noise properties of DFB lasers operating near 2.0 microns. Measured noise spectra indicate intrinsic laser linewidths below 1 kHz. An effective linewidth of less than 200 kHz for 5 ms measurement times is estimated.
Present capability of the High Temperature Electrostatic Levitator (HTESL) at JPL for the containerless materials processing is described. The capability includes the measurements of various thermophysical properties and the studies of undercooling and nucleation phenomena.
The feasibility of Ka-band gallium nitride (GaN) based high power amplifier (HPA) for signal amplification in extreme planetary environment is investigated and its measured performance is presented. The data includes Pout, PAE, EVM for several waveforms and data rates, output spectrum, IMD, Noise Figure, and Gain. The data indicates excellent overall performance. Potential application of this HPA includes communication systems required to operate in the extreme hot environment of Mercury and Venus, extreme cold and high radiation environment of Jupiter’s icy moons, and Artemis missions that involve human/robotic exploration and long-term presence on the Moon.
