Analytical study of space processing of immiscible materials for superconductors and electrical contacts

The results of a study conducted to determine the role space processing or materials research in space plays in the superconductor and electrical contact industries are presented. Visits were made to manufacturers, users, and research organizations connected with these products to provide information about the potential benefits of the space environment and to exchange views on the utilization of space facilities for manufacture, process development, or research. In addition, space experiments were suggested which could result in improved terrestrial processes or products. Notable examples of these are, in the case of superconductors, the development of Nb-bronze alloys (Tsuei alloys) and, in the electrical contact field, the production of Ag-Ni or Ag-metal oxide alloys with controlled microstructure for research and development activities as well as for product development. A preliminary experimental effort to produce and evaluate rapidly cooled Pb-Zn and Cu-Nb-Sn alloys in order to understand the relationship between microstructure and superconducting properties and to simulate the fine structure potentially achievable by space processing was also described.

Fracture control of H-O engine components

An investigation was made to obtain the material characterization and fatigue crack propagation data necessary to establish the salient characteristics of a Ti-6Al-2.5Sn(ELI) alloy fuel pump impeller to be used in a cryogenic service environment. Testing variables considered were: coupon orientation, frequency, load range ratio, and temperature. Data analysis correlated crack propagation data from conventional laboratory coupons with data from a parallel sided rotating disk used to model rotor stresses. Four major design recommendations when bore regions of fuel pump impellers to be operated in cryogenic environments are to be relatively highly stressed are discussed.

Recrystallization as a controlling process in the wear of some f.c.c. metals

Detailed examination of copper specimens after sliding against 440 C steel in liquid methane at speeds up to 25 m/s and loads of up to 2 kg showed the metal comprising the wear surface to possess a fine cell recrystallized structure. Wear proceeded by the plastic shearing of metal in this near surface region without the occurrence of visible metal transfer. A dynamic balance between the intense shear process at the surface and the nucleation of recrystallized grains was proposed to account for the behavior of the metal at the wear surface. Sliding wear experiments were also conducted on Ag, Cu-10% Al, Cu-10% Sn, Ni and Al. It was found that low wear and the absence of heavy metal transfer were associated with those metals observed to undergo recrystallization nucleation without prior recovery.

Nebular condensation of moderately volatile elements and their abundances in ordinary chondrites

Two models accounting for the concentrations of moderately volatile elements in ordinary chondrites are discussed. The first relies on an apparent correlation between ordinary chondrite/type-I carbonaceous chondrite abundance ratios and ideal solution-condensation temperatures of such elements as Sn, Cu, Li, Na, and Mn to construct a model in which volatiles are lost as gases before nebular condensation or as finely-divided solids that are incompletely agglomerated, and the condensation/agglomeration efficiency declines as a function of time. The second theory largely discounts this gas-dust diffraction effect and instead proposed condensation on matrix and volatization from chondules and coarse metal grains as mechanisms explaining the apparent existence of three distinct classes of volatile-element abundance in ordinary chondrites.

Electronic instability and change of crystalline phase in compounds of the V3Si type at low temperature

In V3Si, the V atoms form an array of dense linear chains; a tight-binding approximation in one dimension was used to describe the d electrons. The electronic energy calculated by this method was reduced when the lattice is deformed. This lead to a band type of the Jahn Teller effect, which may explain the cubic to tetragonal transition which was observed at low temperatures. The theory can be extended to other superconductors of the V3X type when X=Ga, Ge, Sn, etcetera, or NB3SN.

Determination of boron and lithium by recording the products from (n, alpha) reactions

Irradiation with thermal neutrons in the VVR-S reactor provides a nondestructive method for determining the presence of boron and lithium in solids. The charged particles produced in the reactions Li-6(n,alpha)H-3 and B-10(n,alpha)Li-7 were detected using CsI single crystal. For alpha-particle spectrometry in the boron determination, an ionization chamber (W and Sn electrodes, 99% Ar + 1% H2) was developed allowing both absolute and relative measurements. In determining boron in lithium-containing samples, both scintillation and ionization chambers are used. In determining lithium in minerals, the error was 1.5%, and the sensitivity 0.00005 wt.%. In the determination of boron in SiC with a concentration of boron approximately (3 plus or minus 2) the error given by the alpha-range uncertainty was 15%.

Origin and evolution of the radio emission from immediate postoutburst supernovae

Several models for the radio emission from immediate postoutburst supernovae are examined under the assumption that the expanding remnant consists of a homogeneously mixed distribution of relativistic particles, magnetic field, and thermal plasma. The evolutionary models are: (1) an adiabatic expansion model; (2) a model incorporating the existence of a central pulsar; and (3) variations on the first two models in which relativistic electrons are accelerated either instantaneously or over an extended period of time and in which ionization, bremsstrahlung, synchrotron, Compton, and expansion losses are explicitly included. The character of the radio emission expected from these models is quite dissimilar. Whereas in adiabatic expansion models the emission is expected to increase slowly and become most intense at high frequencies, in models involving a central pulsar the emission should increase rapidly with a maximum flux density that is the same at all frequencies. The theoretical evolution of the radio emission for each model is compared with observations of SN 1970g.

Upper limits to trace constituents in Jupiter's atmosphere from an analysis of its 5 micrometer spectrum

A high-resolution spectrum of Jupiter at 5 micrometers recorded at the Kuiper Airborne Observatory is used to determine upper limits to the column density of 19 molecules. The upper limits to the mixing ratios of SiH4, H2S, HCN, and simple hydrocarbons are discussed with respect to current models of Jupiter's atmosphere. These upper limits are compared to expectations based upon the solar abundance of the elements. This analysis permits upper limit measurements (SiH4), or actual detections (GeH4) of molecules with mixing ratios with hydrogen as low as 10 to the minus 9th power. In future observations at 5 micrometers the sensitivity of remote spectroscopic analyses should permit the study of constituents with mixing ratios as low as 10 to the minus 10th power, which would include the hydrides of such elements as Sn and As as well as numerous organic molecules.

On strontium isotopic anomalies and odd-A p-process abundances

Several aspects of the nucleosynthesis of Sr isotopes are considered in an attempt to shed light on the problem of the Sr isotopic anomalies discovered in an inclusion of the Allende meteorite. Decomposition of the Sr isotopes into average r-, s-, and p-process nucleosynthetic classes is performed. It is suggested that the Allende inclusion most likely has an excess of s-process Sr and that the initial Sr-87/Sr-86 isotopic ratio is probably slightly more primitive than basaltic achondrites. The results also show that Sn-115 is mostly due to the r-process and that odd-A yields are very small. It is concluded that if the Sr anomaly in the inclusion is an average s enhancement, it argues somewhat in favor of a model of gas/dust fractionation of s and r isotopes during accumulation of the inclusion parent in the protosolar cloud.

Oscillator strength trends in group IVb homologous ions

Shock tube data are used to examine the systematic f value behavior in prominent visible transition arrays (ns-np, np-(n+l)s, np-nd) for the homologous emitter sequence Si 11, Ge 11, Sn 11, and Pb 11. Regularities found for these data are compared with trends in lighter elements. Agreements and s disparities with theoretical and experimental oscillator strengths from the literature are noted.

Lines in the 2736-3303 A spectrum of Arcturus

Results are reported for a study of the near-UV spectrum of Arcturus as recorded with a balloon-borne echelle spectrograph-vidicon detector system in the spectral region from 2700 to 3300 A at 0.1-A resolution. A condensed version of the Arcturus spectrum is provided along with profile descriptions and identifications for 383 absorption features detected in the near-UV. Elements definitely present include Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Zr, and La. Elements with spectral features indicating possible presence include Be, O, S, K, Ga, Ge, Nb, Sn, Gd, and Bi. Line blocking is shown to be extensive in the spectral region studied, and eight possible continuum 'windows' are found in the near-UV. Emission lines of chromospheric origin due to Mg II, Fe I, Fe II, and possibly Cr II are also identified in the region from 2736 to 3303 A. It is noted that the Fe I emission lines at 2823 and 2844 A are optically pumped.

EUV continua of solar flares 1420-1960 A

Measurements of absolute continuum intensities in the wavelength range 1420-1960 A are presented for the SN subflare of 1973 August 9 and the 2B flare of 1973 September 7, observed from the NRL spectrograph aboard Skylab. Continuum measurements are also given for two active-region plages, which are used for background nonflaring levels. Major enhancement of the flare continuum intensity above the plage backgrounds occurs in the Si I 3P and 1D continua. The observed brightness-temperature minimum of the plages is approximately 310 K above the quiet-sun minimum, and occurs at longer wavelength. The earliest flare brightness-temperature minima are approximately 200 K above the plage minimum, and also at longer wavelength. The observed decay time of the flare brightness temperature, which is comparable to the Solrad 9 X-ray decay time, is much longer than the Ulmschneider radiative relaxation time for the 1973 September 7 flare and marginally longer for the 1973 August 9 flare, suggesting continuous excess heating of the plage temperature minimum region throughout the period of our flare observations.

Thermodynamics of selected trace elements in the Jovian atmosphere

The thermochemistry of several hundred compounds of twelve selected trace elements (Ge, Se, Ga, As, Te, Pb, Sn, Cd, Sb, Tl, In, and Bi) has been investigated for solar composition material along a Jupiter adiabat. The results indicate that AsF3, InBr, TlI, and SbS, in addition to CO, PH3, GeH4, AsH3, H2Se, HCl, HF, and H3BO3 proposed by Barshay and Lewis (1978), may be potential chemical tracers of atmospheric dynamics. The reported observation of GeH4 is interpreted on the basis of new calculations as implying rapid vertical transport from levels where the temperature is greater than or equal to 800 K. Upper limits are also set on the abundances of many gaseous compounds of the elements investigated.

Phase transitions in Group III-V and II-VI semiconductors at high pressure

The structures and transition pressures of Group III-V and II-VI semiconductors and of a pseudobinary system (Ga/x/In/1-x/Sb) have been investigated. Results indicate that GaP, InSb, GaSb, GaAs and possible AlP assume Metallic structures at high pressures; a tetragonal, beta-Sn-like structure is adopted by only InSb and GaSb. The rocksalt phase is preferred in InP, InAs, AlSb, ZnO and ZnS. The model of Van Vechten (1973) gives transition pressures which are in good agreement with measured values, but must be refined to account for the occurrence of the ionic rocksalt structure in some compounds. In addition, discrepancies between the theoretical scaling values for volume changes at the semiconductor-to-metal transitions are observed.

Magnetic shielding in a low temperature torsion pendulum experiment

A new type of ether drift experiment searches for anomalous torques on a permanent magnet. A torsion pendulum is used at liquid helium temperature, so that superconducting cylinders can be used to shield magnetic fields. Lead shields attenuate the earth's field, while Nb-Sn shields fastened to the pendulum contain the fields of the magnet. The paper describes the technique by which the earth's field can be reduced below 0.0001 G while simultaneously the moment of the magnet can be reduced by a factor 7 x 10 to the 4th.

A new furnace for high gradient directional growth

A new design furnace for high gradient solidification of in-situ composites is presented. Its essential feature is the direct addition of heat to one side of a thin, pancake-like layer of liquid, and continuous withdrawal of a solid crystal from the other side. Liquid in the thin layer is continuously replenished by solid or liquid feed, and the thinness of the layer permits a large heat throughput with a high temperature gradient without excessive metal superheat. The commercial advantages of this design are improved process efficiency in scale-up, lower melt temperatures, and control of interface morphology by adjusting heater position and temperature. The furnace was tested on Sn-Pb and Al-Cu alloys, obtaining 100C/mm gradients for 6 mm specimens of Al-31.5 % Cu alloy.

Optical feedback effects on the performance of Pb/1-x/Sn/x/Se semiconductor lasers

The effects of optical feedback on the performance of Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Se semiconductor lasers are reported. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate that uncontrolled optical feedback can occur from optics external to the laser cavity and that these external optical elements can result in the formation of a composite cavity. This composite cavity can sustain a number of narrow closely spaced emission modes with the spectral characteristics of these modes dependent upon the parameters of the cavity. With weak feedback, the spectral width of the amplitude envelope of the new lasing modes resembles that of the original laser mode with no optical feedback. With strongly coupled feedback the envelope of the external cavity modes substantially broadens the apparent linewidth of the laser. It is shown that these effects can be eliminated, and, moreover, they offer the potential for obtaining spectrally narrow single-mode emission from Pb-salt lasers through the use of carefully designed external cavities.
