Results of the 1974 through 1977 NASA/JPL balloon flight solar cell calibration program

From 1974 through 1977, seven solar cell calibration flights and two R&D flights with a spectroradiometer as a payload were attempted. There were two R&D flights, and one calibration flight that failed. Each calibration flight balloon was designed to carry its payload to an altitude of 36.6 km (120 kft). The R&D flight balloons were designed for a payload altitude of 47.5 km (150 kft). At the end of the flight period, the upper (solar cell calibration system) and lower (consolidated instrument package (DIP) payloads were separated from the balloon and descend via parachutes. The calibrated solar cells recovered in this manner were used as primary intensity reference standards during solar simulator testing of solar cells and solar arrays with similar spectral response characteristics. This method of calibration has become the most widely accepted technique for developing space standard solar cells.

Assembly and Integration Process of the High-Density Detector Array Readout Modules for the Simons Observatory

The Simons Observatory will measure the cosmic microwave background tempera-ture and polarization using a suite of new telescopes in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The Simons Observatory will use dichroic transition edge sensor (TES) bolometer arrays spanning six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz. The Simons Observa-tory will pioneer the use of a densely packed multiplexing architecture based on the microwave SQUID multiplexer ( 𝜇mux), housing ∼2000 microwave resonators, each coupled to a TES. The Simons Observatory aims to multiplex each array of ∼2000 detectors with a single pair of coaxial cables and requires a multiplexing factor of ∼1000 . The Simons Observatory cryogenic readout system is called the universal microwave multiplexing module (UMM). The UMM couples to both horn and lenslet-coupled detector arrays and is integrated into the universal focal-plane module (UFM) after being independently characterized. We present processes we have developed for highly repeatable and automated integration methods of UMMs, which will be needed for the production of the 49 UFMs required for the first stage of the Simons Observatory.

Advances in Uncertainty and Sensitivity Analysis Methods and Applications in GDSA Framework.

The Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology (SFWST) Campaign of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy (NE), Office of Fuel Cycle Technology (FCT) is conducting research and development (R&D) on geologic disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level nuclear waste (HLW). Two high priorities for SFWST disposal R&D are design concept development and disposal system modeling. These priorities are directly addressed in the SFWST ''Geologic Disposal Safety Assessment'' (GDSA) control account, which is charged with developing a geologic repository system modeling and analysis capability, and the associated software, ''GDSA Framework'', for evaluating disposal system performance for nuclear waste in geologic media. ''GDSA Framework'' is supported by SFWST Campaign and its predecessor the Used Fuel Disposition (UFD) campaign. This report fulfills the GDSA Uncertainty and Sensitivity Analysis Methods work package (SF-20SN01030403) level 3 milestone — ''Advances in Uncertainty and Sensitivity Analysis Methods and Applications in GDSA Framework'' (M3SF-20SN010304032). It presents high level objectives and strategy for development of uncertainty and sensitivity analysis tools, demonstrates uncertainty quantification (UQ) and sensitivity analysis (SA) tools in GDSA Framework in FY20, and describes additional UQ/SA tools whose future implementation would enhance the UQ/SA capability of ''GDSA Framework''. This work was closely coordinated with the other Sandia National Laboratory GDSA work packages: the GDSA Framework Development work package (SF- 2051\101030404), the GDSA Repository Systems Analysis work package (SF-2051\101030405), and the GDSA PFLOTRAN Development work package (SF-20SN01030406). This report builds on developments reported in previous ''GDSA Framework'' milestones, particularly M2SF- 19SNO1030403.

Improving Enzyme Optimum Temperature Prediction with Resampling Strategies and Ensemble Learning

Accurate prediction of the optimal catalytic temperature ( T opt ) of enzymes is vital in biotechnology, as enzymes with high T opt values are desired for enhanced reaction rates. Recently, a machine learning method (temperature optima for microorganisms and enzymes, TOME) for predicting T opt was developed. TOME was trained on a normally distributed data set with a median T opt of 37 °C and less than 5% of T opt values above 85 °C, limiting the method’s predictive capabilities for thermostable enzymes. Due to the distribution of the training data, the mean squared error on T opt values greater than 85 °C is nearly an order of magnitude higher than the error on values between 30 and 50 °C. Here, we apply ensemble learning and resampling strategies that tackle the data imbalance to significantly decrease the error on high T opt values (>85 °C) by 60% and increase the overall R 2 value from 0.527 to 0.632. The revised method, temperature optima for enzymes with resampling (TOMER), and the resampling strategies applied in this work are freely available to other researchers as Python packages on GitHub.

Vertex-finding and reconstruction of contained two-track neutrino events in the MicroBooNE detector

In this work, we describe algorithms developed to isolate and accurately reconstruct two-track events that are contained within the MicroBooNE detector. This method is optimized to reconstruct two tracks of lengths longer than 5cm. This code has applications to searches for neutrino oscillations and measurements of cross sections using quasi-elastic-like charged current events. The algorithms we discuss will be applicable to all detectors running in Fermilab's Short Baseline Neutrino program (SBN), and to any future liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) experiment with beam energies ~ 1 GeV. The algorithms are publicly available on a GITHUB repository. This reconstruction offers a complementary and independent alternative to the Pandora reconstruction package currently in use in LArTPC experiments, and provides similar reconstruction performance for two-track events.

Low-noise receivers: Microwave maser development

An S-Band traveling-wave maser with a 2260- to 2400-MHz tuning capability has been built and installed on the 26-m antenna. The traveling-wave maser closed cycle refrigerator package was assembled within a limited time schedule and at low cost to meet the requirements of the very long baseline interferometry validation task. The maser uses a superconducting magnet with a field staggering coil for gain/bandwidth adjustment. The maser pump source is a Gunn effect oscillator with the capability of continuous tuning throughout the entire maser tuning range. The package was assembled from surplus components that have been used previously in the Deep Space Network in a variety of applications.

Dynamic response of damaged angleplied fiber composites

The effects of low level damage induced by monotonic load, cyclic load and/or residual stresses on the vibration frequencies and damping factors of fiber composite angleplied laminates were investigated. Two different composite systems were studied - low modulus fiber and ultra high modulus fiber composites. The results obtained show that the frequencies and damping factors of angleplied laminates made from low modulus fiber composites are sensitive to low level damage while those made from ultra high modulus composites are not. Vibration tests may not be sufficiently sensitive to assess concentrated local damage in angleplied laminates. Dynamic response determined from low-velocity impact coupled with the Fast Fourier Transform and packaged in a minicomputer can be a convenient procedure for assessing low-level damage.

Atmospheric Emission Photometric Imaging on Spacelab (AEPI)

Two parallel detector systems are used for atmospheric emission photometric emission. The top system is a TV system using the image intensified S.E.C. tube as the detector. The bottom system, the photon counting array (P.C.A.), uses a microchannel plate intensified anode array tube and is equivalent to a 100 channel photomultiplier. For the television, the filters are selected by means of a filter wheel set. The field of view of the is interchangeable between 20 and 6 degrees, by means of a moveable prism. The quartz window mu channel plate intensifier is fiber optically coupled to a 40-25 demagnifying tube which is in turn coupled to the S.E.C. tube. The PCA channel has a fixed field of view of 4 deg and a remote control interchangeable photometric converter optics which converts the imaging array into a multichannel photometer. The mu channel plate array tube amplifies the photons into detectable counts for the PCA electronics. The entire system is pointed by a two axis gimbal. The flight equipment to be acquired consists of a gyro package and an interactive flight control unit panel. The gyro package is necessary because of the inadequate attitude reference supplied by the current Spacelab systems.

The use of Ada in distributed simulations

The increasing need for detailed information about systems of continually growing complexity enhances steadily the demands regarding the employed models. The present investigation is concerned with work related to the development of high-performance computer hardware intended for the support of the real-time simulation of jet engines. The hardware is structured in the form of a network of communicating microprocessors running in parallel. The need for a higher-order language capability for programming such a network has led to the research considered in this study. Attention is given to the hardware which is being developed, an abstract model, programming language considerations, research considerations, research objectives, Ada tasks, Ada packages, the Ada model, the mapping of the model to the hardware, a precompiler example, and the advantages of Ada.

Automated simulation as part of a design workstation

A development project for a design workstation for advanced life-support systems incorporating qualitative simulation, required the implementation of a useful qualitative simulation capability and the integration of qualitative and quantitative simulations, such that simulation capabilities are maximized without duplication. The reason is that to produce design solutions to a system goal, the behavior of the system in both a steady and perturbed state must be represented. The paper reports on the Qualitative Simulation Tool (QST), on an expert-system-like model building and simulation interface toll called ScratchPad (SP), and on the integration of QST and SP with more conventional, commercially available simulation packages now being applied in the evaluation of life-support system processes and components.
