Advanced methods for preparation and characterization of infrared detector materials

Crystal growth of Hg sub 1-x Cd sub x Te and density measurements of ingot slices are discussed. Radial compositional variations are evaluated from the results of infrared transmission edge mapping. The pseudo-binary HgTe-CdTe phase diagram is examined with reference to differential thermal analysis measurements. The phase equilibria calculations, based on the 'regular association solution' theory (R.A.S.) are explained and, using the obtained R.A.S. parameters, the activities of Hg, Cd, and Te vapors and their partial pressures over the pseudo-binary melt are calculated.

Reaction bonded silicon nitride prepared from wet attrition-milled silicon

Silicon powder wet milled in heptane was dried, compacted into test bar shape, helium-sintered, and then reaction bonded in nitrogen-4 volume percent hydrogen. As-nitrided bend strengths averaged approximately 290 MPa at both room temperature and 1400 C. Fracture initiation appeared to be associated with subsurface flaws in high strength specimens and both subsurface and surface flaws in low strength specimens.

Effect of certain psychopharmacological preparations on adaptation under stress conditions

Experiments staged on rats demonstrated that the formation of pathological states caused by stress and accompanied by the development of ulcerative lesion of the gastric mucosa are associated with the degree of the catecholamines level drop in the mesencephalon and hypothalamus. The application of seduxen and also of combinations consisting of L-DOPA with seduxen, or with an L-adrenoblocking agent pyroxan tends to reduce the frequency of developing alcerative lesions of the stomach. The protective effect produced by the combination of L-DOPA with an L-adrenoblocking agent pyroxan is barred by an additional administration of an B-adrenoblocking agent, inderal.

Preparing aircraft propulsion for a new era in energy and the environment

Improving fuel efficiency, new sources of jet fuel, and noise and emission control are subjects of NASA's aeronautics program. Projects aimed at attaining a 5% fuel savings for existing engines and a 13-22% savings for the next generation of turbofan engines using advanced components, and establishing a basis for turboprop-powered commercial air transports with 30-40% savings over conventional turbofan aircraft at comparable speeds and altitudes, are discussed. Fuel sources are considered in terms of reduced hydrogen and higher aromatic contents and resultant higher liner temperatures, and attention is given to lean burning, improved fuel atomization, higher freezing-point fuel, and deriving jet fuel from shale oil or coal. Noise sources including the fan, turbine, combustion process, and flow over internal struts, and attenuation using acoustic treatment, are discussed, while near-term reduction of polluting gaseous emissions at both low and high power, and far-term defining of the minimum gaseous-pollutant levels possible from turbine engines are also under study.

Paleointensity determinations at elevated temperatures - Sample preparation technique

A technique has been developed for the encapsulation of rock samples in order to prevent the chemical alterations which commonly accompany paleointensity measurements at elevated temperatures. The technique involves vacuum pumping at about 100 C of the sample as placed in a silica tube. The tube containing the sample and a Ti 'getter' are sealed under vacuum. Measurements can be made at 200 and 300 C. Immediately after this, the sample is sealed-off from the getter. The sample is now ready for measurements at higher temperatures.

Preparation of cast aluminum alloy-mica particle composites

A method for making aluminum-mica particle composites is presented in which mica particles are stirred in molten aluminum alloys followed by casting in permanent molds. Magnesium is added either as an alloying element or in the form of pieces to the surface of the alloy melts to disperse up to 3 wt% mica powders in the melts and to obtain high recoveries of mica in the castings. The mechanical properties of the aluminum alloy-mica composite decrease with increasing mica content; however, even at 2.2% it has a tensile strength of 14.22 kg/sq mm with 1.1% elongation, a compression strength of 42.61 kg/sq mm, and an impact strength of 0.30 kgm/sq cm. Cryogenic and self-lubricating bearing are mentioned applications.

The preparation of calcium superoxide in a flowing gas stream and fluidized bed

Superoxides can be used as sources of chemically stored oxygen in emergency breathing apparatus. The work reported here describes the use of a low-pressure nitrogen gas sweep through the reactant bed, for temperature control and water vapor removal. For a given set of gas temperature, bed thickness, and reaction time values, the highest purity calcium superoxide, Ca(O2)2, was obtained at the highest space velocity of the nitrogen gas sweep. The purity of the product was further increased by flow conditions that resulted in the fluidization of the reactant bed. However, scale-up of the low-pressure fluidized bed process was limited to the formation of agglomerates of reactant particles, which hindered thermal control by the flowing gas stream. A radiofrequency flow discharge inside the reaction chamber prevented agglomeration, presumably by dissipation of the static charges on the fluidized particles.

Preparation and evaluation of advanced electrocatalysts for phosphoric acid fuel cells

Alloy electrocatalysts on carbon supports were developed for hydrogen oxidation in the presence of carbon monoxide. These electrocatalysts match the best platinum on carbon catalysts for performance yet cost half as much. The results demonstrate that a significant reduction in anode electrocatalyst material cost can be achieved by replacing the platinum. Since surface characterization of this catalyst is important to explain its performance, several approaches and pitfalls to the elucidation of the surface characterization are presented.

The effect of preparation conditions on the structure and mechanical properties of reaction-sintered silicon nitride

The microstructure of reaction sintered silicon nitride (RSSN) was changed over a wide range by varying the grain density, grain size of the silicon starting powder, nitriding conditions, and by introducing artificial pores. The influence of single microstructural parameters on mechanical properties like room temperature strength, creep behavior, and resistance to thermal shock was investigated. The essential factors influencing these properties were found to be total porosity, pore size distribution, and the fractions of alpha and beta Si3N4. In view of high temperature engineering applications of RSSN, potentials for optimizing the material's properties by controlled processing are discussed.

Preparation and evaluation of advanced electrocatalysts for phosphoric acid fuel cells

The highest performance fuel cell cathode electrocatalyst combination ever observed gives 755 mV vs hydrogen at 100 ASF on air at 180 C and shows a potential improvement to 775 mV vs hydrogen for better electrode structures. A pressurized fuel cell (UTC at 5 atm) would then give 805 mV at 320 ASF and 180 C. Another activity diagnostic is the performance of this electrocatalyst on oxygen at 900 mV vs hydrogen. The value for electrocatalyst is 44 mA per milligram of platinum and is projected to reach 60 mA per milligram of platinum with improved electrode structures. Since the electrocatalyst surface area and the electrode structure are not yet optimized there is considerable room for performance enhancement beyond these values, especially at higher temperatures.
