Evaluation of microstructural changes in fresh cement paste using AC impedance spectroscopy vs. oscillation rheology and 1H NMR relaxometry

AC impedance spectroscopy (ACIS) is a promising technique for monitoring the microstructure evolution of fresh cement paste in real-time. This paper compared the change of bulk electric resistivity (ρ{sub bulk}) obtained from ACIS with the developments of storage modulus (G′) and the mean transverse relaxation times (T{sub 2}) of fresh Portland cement pastes within 5 h. It was found that the three different phases (Phase I, II, and III) on the microstructural build-up process of fresh paste can be accurately distinguished by analyzing ρ{sub bulk}, as well as G′ and T{sub 2}. The use of ρ{sub bulk} fails to characterize the microstructural changes in Phase I due to the great sensitivity on the electrical conductivity of the interstitial solution. However, it can successfully reflect the developing features of microstructure in Phases II and III, and reliably evaluate the impacts of water to cement ratio, superplasticizer, and supplementary cementitious materials on the microstructural development.

Active electrochemical interfaces stabilized through self-organized potential oscillations

Some electrochemical systems are known to have higher average efficiency when operated under an oscillatory regime. Given the compromise between activity and stability, the stability of electrochemical interfaces in a self-organized, oscillatory state must be taken into account. Here we evaluate the electro-oxidation of methanol and formic acid on platinum under regular and oscillatory conditions, and study the stability by following the Pt dissolution rates in situ with a stationary probe rotating disk electrode (SPRDE) coupled to an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Generally speaking, as the electro-oxidation reaction proceeds, the platinum dissolution rate increases considerably. To guarantee Pt stability, the potential must be kept below 1.0 V vs. RHE. Interestingly, no dissolution is detectable when the electrode potential undergoes temporary self-organization, ensuring a stable and active interface.

Synthetic antiferromagnet-based spin Josephson oscillator

Two easy-plane ferromagnetic layers, antiferromagnetically coupled through a thin nonmagnetic metal layer, form the magnetic analog of a Josephson junction. Additionally, a current driven spin chemical potential drives a 2π precession of the in-plane magnetization of each ferromagnet. The participation of the full magnetic moment in the 2π precession maximizes the giant magnetoresistance and the ac output power. The frequency can be continuously tuned by a dc bias. An applied ac bias results in a time-averaged magnetoresistance with Shapiro-like steps. The multistate mode-locking behavior exhibited by the Shapiro steps may be exploited for applications such as microwave detectors and neuromorphic computing. They may also serve as an experimental signature of spin superfluidity.
