Nonlinear axisymmetric flexural vibration of spherical shells

Axisymmetric responses are presented of a nonshallow thin-walled spherical shell on the basis of nonlinear bending theory. An ordinary differential equation with nonlinearity of quadratic as well as cubic terms associated with variable time is derived. The derivation is based on the assumption that the deflection mode is the sum of four Legendre polynomials, and the Galerkin procedure is applied. The equation is solved by asymptotic expansion, and a first approximate solution is adopted. Unstable regions of this solution are discussed.

Analytical methods for performance evaluation of nonlinear filters.

In the investigation, the filtering problem is considered in the continuous time domain. The postulated simple suboptimal nonlinear filter structure closely parallels the structure of the Kalman-Bucy optimal linear filter algorithm. Two filter performance evaluation methods are developed based on the Kolmogorov equations for the transition density of Markov processes. The expansions in the approximations for the nonlinear system and observation functions are in effect carried out up to second-order terms in both methods. The description of the filter's performance is sought in terms of second-order statistics in both methods.

Some heuristic procedures for analyzing random vibration of nonlinear oscillators.

The stationary response of a lightly damped nonlinear oscillator subjected to wideband random excitation can be examined as an example of thermal equilibrium. It may be assumed that the response consists of a series of free-vibration cycles with small random fluctuations in phase and amplitude. Certain statistical properties of the response can be estimated by averaging corresponding properties of the free vibration with respect to cycle amplitude distributions. Such heuristic procedures for determining the expected frequency and the autocorrelation function of the stationary response are outlined. Some additional results concerning first-passage problems for nonlinear oscillators are included.

Evaluation of solution procedures for material and/or geometrically nonlinear structural analysis by the direct stiffness method.

This paper presents an assessment of the solution procedures available for the analysis of inelastic and/or large deflection structural behavior. A literature survey is given which summarized the contribution of other researchers in the analysis of structural problems exhibiting material nonlinearities and combined geometric-material nonlinearities. Attention is focused at evaluating the available computation and solution techniques. Each of the solution techniques is developed from a common equation of equilibrium in terms of pseudo forces. The solution procedures are applied to circular plates and shells of revolution in an attempt to compare and evaluate each with respect to computational accuracy, economy, and efficiency. Based on the numerical studies, observations and comments are made with regard to the accuracy and economy of each solution technique.

Shock-wave structure using nonlinear model Boltzmann equations.

The structure of strong plane shock waves in a perfect monatomic gas was studied using four nonlinear models of the Boltzmann equation. The models involved the use of a simplified collision operator with velocity-independent collision frequency, in place of the complicated Boltzmann collision operator. The models employed were the BGK and ellipsoidal models developed by earlier authors, and the polynomial and trimodal gain function models developed during the work. An exact set of moment equations was derived for the density, velocity, temperature, viscous stress, and heat flux within the shock. This set was reduced to a pair of coupled nonlinear integral equations and solved using specially adapted numerical techniques. A new and simple Gauss-Seidel iteration was developed during the work and found to be as efficient as the best earlier iteration methods.

Adaptive nonlinear optimization of the signal-to-noise ratio of an array subject to a constraint.

Investigation of a stochastic projected gradient algorithm which can be used to find a constrained optimum point for a concave or convex objective function subject to nonlinear constraints. When the constraint consists of only one linear equation, convergence to the constrained optimum value is proven, and bounds are obtained for the rate of convergence of the algorithm to the constrained optimum value. This algorithm is then applied to the nonlinear problem of automatically making an array of detectors form a beam in a desired direction in space when unknown interfering noise is present so as to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio subject to a constraint on the supergain ratio.

Nonlinear and adaptive estimation in reentry.

The problem of real-time estimation of a lifting reentry vehicle trajectory of the shuttle orbiter type is considered. Simulations feature large position and velocity uncertainties at radar acquisition and realistic model errors in lift, drag and other model parameters. Radar tracking and accelerometer data are simulated. Significant nonlinearities are found to exist on spacecraft acquisition. An iterated nonlinear filter is shown to perform optimally during the radar acquisition phase. An adaptive filter is shown to track time-varying model errors, such as errors in the lift and drag coefficients, down to the noise level. Such real-time model tracking (identification) is frequently required for guidance and control implementation.

Recent results of nonlinear estimators applied to hereditary systems.

An application of the extended Kalman filter to delayed systems to estimate the state and time delay is presented. Two nonlinear estimators are discussed and the results compared with those of the Kalman filter. For all the filters considered, the hereditary system was treated with the delay in the pure form and by using Pade approximations of the delay. A summary of the convergence properties of the filters studied is given. The results indicate that the linear filter applied to the delayed system performs inadequately while the nonlinear filters provide reasonable estimates of both the state and the parameters.

A comparison of the effects of small nonlinearities on several estimation schemes.

A variety of techniques are available for estimating the states of nonlinear dynamic systems from noisy data. These procedures are generally equivalent when applied to linear systems. This paper investigates the difference between several of these procedures in the presence of small dynamic and observational nonlinearities. In particular, it examines one least square batch processing algorithm, and three recursive algorithms similar to the Kalman filter. To first order, all the estimators have the same covariance. Expressions for the means, however, show that each estimator has a different bias. The examples presented show that the biases can be a strong function of such parameters as initial covariances and number of data points being considered.

Optimal design of a class of nonlinear networks.

The problem of synthesizing nth order nonlinear nonautonomous networks with a prescribed small signal behavior is considered. It is shown that, in the absence of coupling elements, the solution of this problem reduces to synthesizing a set of first order nonlinear characteristics. These characteristics can then be determined using a recently developed generalized steepest descent criterion.

Utilizing stiffness matrices and supplying as input the loading and boundary conditions, program generates equilibrium equations for structure. Nonlinear strain energy terms result in pseudogeneralized forces which are combined with applied generalized forces. Resulting set of nonlinear algebraic equilibrium equations is solved by one of several methods.

Development and optimization of a nonlinear multiparameter model for the human operator

A systematic method is proposed for the development, optimization, and comparison of controller-models for the human operator. This is suitable for any designed model, even multiparameter systems. A random search technique is chosen for the parameter optimization. As valuation criteria for the quality of the model development the criterion function - the comparison between the input and output functions of the human operator and those of the model - and the most important characteristic values and functions of the statistical signal theory are used. A nonlinear multiparameter model for the human operator is being designed which considers the complex input information rate per time in a single display. The nonlinear features of the model are effected by a modified threshold element and a decision algorithm. Different display-configurations as well as various transfer functions of the controlled element are explained by different optimized parameter-combinations.

Linear and nonlinear stability characteristics of whistlers

Linear and nonlinear propagating characteristics of right-hand polarized, slow electromagnetic, magnetoplasma waves (whistlers) are discussed in terms of stability and dispersion. An analysis of the stability of whistlers propagating at an angle to the static magnetic field is presented. A new mechanism is derived for the onset of stimulated emissions, and modulational instability for nonlinear whistlers are discussed.

Perturbed nonlinear differential equations

The existence of a solution defined for all t and possessing a type of boundedness property is established for the perturbed nonlinear system y = f(t,y) + F(t,y). The unperturbed system x = f(t,x) has a dichotomy in which some solutions exist and are well behaved as t increases to infinity, and some solution exists and are well behaved as t decreases to minus infinity. A similar study is made for a perturbed nonlinear differential equation defined on a half line, R+, and the existence of a family of solutions with special boundedness properties is established. The ideas are applied to integral manifolds.

A theoretical and experimental investigation of the linear and nonlinear impulse responses from a magnetoplasma column

Linear and nonlinear responses of a magnetoplasma resulting from inhomogeneity in the background plasma density are studied. The plasma response to an impulse electric field was measured and the results are compared with the theory of an inhomogeneous cold plasma. Impulse responses were recorded for the different plasma densities, static magnetic fields, and neutral pressures and generally appeared as modulated, damped oscillations. The frequency spectra of the waveforms consisted of two separated resonance peaks. For weak excitation, the results correlate with the linear theory of a cold, inhomogeneous, cylindrical magnetoplasma. The damping mechanism is identified with that of phase mixing due to inhomogeneity in plasma density. With increasing excitation voltage, the nonlinear impulse responses display stronger damping and a small increase in the frequency of oscillation.

The nonlinear flap-lag coupled oscillation of torsionally rigid rotor blades in forward flight is examined using a set of consistently derived equations by the asymptotic expansion procedure of multiple time scales. The regions of stability and limit cycle oscillation are presented. The roles of parametric excitation, nonlinear oscillation, and forced excitation played in the response of the blade are determined.

Nonlinear interaction of a fast magnetogasdynamic shock with a tangential discontinuity

A basic problem, which is of considerable interest in geoastrophysical applications of magnetogasdynamics, is the nonlinear interaction of a fast shock (S sub f) with a tangential discontinuity (T). The problem is treated for an arbitrary S sub f interacting with an arbitrary T under the assumption that in the frame of reference in which S sub f and T are at rest, the flow is superfast on both sides of T, and that a steady flow develops. As a result of the nonlinear analysis a flow pattern is obtained consisting of the incident discontinuities S sub f 1 and T2 and a transmitted fast shock S sub f 3, the modified tangential discontinuity T4 and a reflected fast shock S sub f 5 or fast rarefaction wave R sub f 5. The results are discussed in terms of seven significant similarity parameters. In addition special cases like changes in magnetic field direction only, changes in desnity or velocity shear only etc. are discussed.

Nonlinear transient analysis of multi-mass flexible rotors - theory and applications

The equations of motion necessary to compute the transient response of multi-mass flexible rotors are formulated to include unbalance, rotor acceleration, and flexible damped nonlinear bearing stations. A method of calculating the unbalance response of flexible rotors from a modified Myklestad-Prohl technique is discussed in connection with the method of solution for the transient response. Several special cases of simplified rotor-bearing systems are presented and analyzed for steady-state response, stability, and transient behavior. These simplified rotor models produce extensive design information necessary to insure stable performance to elastic mounted rotor-bearing systems under varying levels and forms of excitation. The nonlinear journal bearing force expressions derived from the short bearing approximation are utilized in the study of the stability and transient response of the floating bush squeeze damper support system. Both rigid and flexible rotor models are studied, and results indicate that the stability of flexible rotors supported by journal bearings can be greatly improved by the use of squeeze damper supports. Results from linearized stability studies of flexible rotors indicate that a tuned support system can greatly improve the performance of the units from the standpoint of unbalanced response and impact loading. Extensive stability and design charts may be readily produced for given rotor specifications by the computer codes presented in this analysis.
