Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). Effect of sun angle and haze on generation of LANDSAT imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. When heavy haze was present over a nonvegetated scene, the mean radiance values for all MSS channels were lowered, with the greatest decrease occurring in channels 1 and 2. Over a vegetated scene, any apparent decrease in mean radiance values due to haze may be marked by an increase in mean radiance values which occurred as vegetation increased in vigor during its growth cycle. Mean radiance values for nonvegetated targets (except water) were closely correlated to the changes in sun elevation angle throughout the year. A sun angle correction to a fixed reference data appeared to offer the possibility of compensating for haze covered areas by predicting the mean radiance values which would be closely correlated to the normal sun declination curve.

Spatial land-use inventory, modeling, and projection/Denver metropolitan area, with inputs from existing maps, airphotos, and LANDSAT imagery

A landscape model was constructed with 34 land-use, physiographic, socioeconomic, and transportation maps. A simple Markov land-use trend model was constructed from observed rates of change and nonchange from photointerpreted 1963 and 1970 airphotos. Seven multivariate land-use projection models predicting 1970 spatial land-use changes achieved accuracies from 42 to 57 percent. A final modeling strategy was designed, which combines both Markov trend and multivariate spatial projection processes. Landsat-1 image preprocessing included geometric rectification/resampling, spectral-band, and band/insolation ratioing operations. A new, systematic grid-sampled point training-set approach proved to be useful when tested on the four orginal MSS bands, ten image bands and ratios, and all 48 image and map variables (less land use). Ten variable accuracy was raised over 15 percentage points from 38.4 to 53.9 percent, with the use of the 31 ancillary variables. A land-use classification map was produced with an optimal ten-channel subset of four image bands and six ancillary map variables. Point-by-point verification of 331,776 points against a 1972/1973 U.S. Geological Survey (UGSG) land-use map prepared with airphotos and the same classification scheme showed average first-, second-, and third-order accuracies of 76.3, 58.4, and 33.0 percent, respectively.

Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). YES phase 1 yield feasibility report

The author has identified the following significant results. Each state model was separately evaluated to determine if a projected performance to the country level would satisfy a 90/90 criterion. All state models, except the North Dakota and Kansas models, satisfied that criterion both for district estimates aggregated to the state level and for state estimates directly from the models. In addition to the tests of the 90/90 criterion, the models were examined for their ability to adequately respond to fluctuations in weather. This portion of the analysis was based on a subjective interpretation of values of certain description statistics. As a result, 10 of the 12 models were judged to respond inadequately to variation in weather-related variables.

Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). An early estimate of small grains acreage

The author has identified the following significant results. A major advantage of this scheme is that it needs minimal human intervention. The entire scheme, with the exception of the choice of dates, can be computerized and the results obtained in minutes. The decision to limit the number of acquisitions processed to four was made to facilitate operation on the particular computer being used. Some earlier runs on another computer system were based on as many as seven biophase-1 acquisitions.

A simulation study of Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE) technology

The author has identified the following significant results. The LACIE performance predictor (LPP) was used to replicate LACIE phase 2 for a 15 year period, using accuracy assessment results for phase 2 error components. Results indicated that the (LPP) simulated the LACIE phase 2 procedures reasonably well. For the 15 year simulation, only 7 of the 15 production estimates were within 10 percent of the true production. The simulations indicated that the acreage estimator, based on CAMS phase 2 procedures, has a negative bias. This bias was too large to support the 90/90 criterion with the CV observed and simulated for the phase 2 production estimator. Results of this simulation study validate the theory that the acreage variance estimator in LACIE was conservative.
