Turbomachinery incipient failure dynamic detection indicators and analysis

Tape recorded signals from case-mounted accelerometers are examined to determine the feasibility of detecting spalls on bearing balls in the liquid oxygen (LOX) pump in the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). The nonperiodic nature of the spall impact on inner and outer bearing races caused traditional techniques to be unsuccessful. A technique involving statistical techniques and spectra ratios was used to review available pump test tapes.

Speculations on nature and extent of Archean basement in Labrador as indicated by SR, ND and PB isotopic systematics of proterozoic intrusives

The Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic compositions of mid to late Proterozoic (approximately 1.6 to 1.1 Ga) massif-type anorthosites and mafic intrusives in the eastern Canadian shield are correlated with geographic location. Complexes in the Grenville province have positive epsilon sub Nd values and initial Sr-87/Sr-86 (I sub Sr) generally less than 0.703, suggesting derivation from depleted mantle. In Labrador, similar complexes close to or northwest of a line roughly corresponding to the Grenville Front have negative epsilon sub Nd values and I sub Sr 0.703. This contrast was intrepreted as reflecting either enriched mantle under the Nain Province, or contamination of the Nain intrusives with older crustal components. Lead isotopic compositions, however, favor the latter. The possibility of using these Proterozoic intrusives as tracers to characterize the nature and extent of older basement types in Labrador is discussed.

Varying rock responses as an indicator of changes in CO2-H2O fluid composition

The formation of the late Archean charnockite zone of southern India was ascribed to dehydration recrystallization due to an influx of CO2. Pressure temperature conditions for the metamorphism were calculated at about 750 C and 7.5 Kbar. The composition of the volatile species presently contained in fluid inclusions in the rocks changes across the transition zone. The transition zone was studied at Kabbaldurga and the paths taken by the fluids were identified.

A preliminary report on a possible stromatolite find from the Elephant Moraine, Antarctica: A potential directional indicator for ice movement

During the 1983 to 1984 Antarctic Search for Meteorites field season, numerous specimens of a shiny black rock were collected from among the glacial debris at the Elephant Moraine. From a distance these black rocks gave the appearance of meteorites, but upon closer inspection, distinct layering and radial crystal growth patterns became clearly visible. Laboratory investigations showed that these unusual specimens are primarily composed of carbonate minerals. Petrographically, microscopic examination of twelve randomly collected specimens revealed a variety in the habits of the carbonates, but the overall trend tends to be one of radiating acicular crystals that have the appearance of a pseudo-cellular structure reminiscent of stromatolites. It is not possible at this time to specifically identify this possible stromatolite material or its source locality.

Diffusive electron acceleration at SNR shock fronts and the observed SNR radio spectral indices

The radio synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons in shell supernova remnants (SNRs) provides a unique opportunity to probe the energy distribution of energetic electrons at their acceleration site (SNR shock fronts). This information provides insight into the acceleration mechanism(s). The implications of these observations for the diffusive (first-order Fermi) acceleration of electrons at the SNR shock fronts are discussed.

EXOSAT results on V426 Ophiuchi - Indications of a DQ Herculis system

EXOSAT LE and ME data reveal a sinusoidal l hr modulation during the 6 hr binary orbit of the cataclysmic variable V426 Oph. The amplitude and shape of this modulation, the X-ray fluxes and spectrum, as well as the time scales involved argue for a DQ Her interpretation. In this case, the white dwarf in V426 Oph has the longest rotation period among the known DQ Her systems with orbital periods greater than 3 hr.

Osteocalcin as an indicator of bone metabolism during spaceflight

The effect of microgravity on osteocalcin (OC) is investigated in rats flown on Spacelab 3. Serum, Ca, Pi, total protein, alkaline phosphatase, and OC contents, and the breaking strength of the humerus of control and Spacelab rats are calculated; the procedures utilized for these analyses are described. It is detected that the OC is reduced, and the serum and alkaline phosphatase are unaffected by microgravity.

Cepheid variables as extra-galactic distance indicators

The role of Cepheid variables in establishing the inner distance scale to nearby galaxies is discussed. Emphasis is placed on the necessity for broad wavelength coverage in attempting to account for metallicity differences and reddening internal to the parent galaxies. In addition linear detectors are essential in minimizing the effects of any unresolved background contribution to the photometry. Recent infrared observations of Cepheids in Local Group galaxies are surveyed and all published data on extra galactic Cepheids are presented for convenient access.

The Lakshmi Plateau structure as an indicator of asthenosphere horizontal flows on Venus

The structure of Lakshmi Planum in the western part of Ishtar Terra in a fold-fault setting which conforms to the basic massif of the plateau with eruptive centers is constructed concentrically and is interpreted from the point of view of the subsurface flow of materials in the form of horizontally diverging asthenospheric flows and gravitational creep. The surrounding structures are formed by the deformation of the more rigid lithosphere as it breaks away from the asthenospheric flow.

Displaced narrow absorption components in the spectra of mass-losing OB stars - Indications of corotating interaction regions?

The discovery of displaced narrow components (DNCs) in an increasingly large number of stars of various spectral types suggests that an explanation of these features may contribute significantly to understanding of winds from stars of all types. The reported properties of DNCs are summarized here with a view to evaluating one particular scenario for DNC formation which involves corotating interaction regions (CIRs) in the stellar wind. The relevant features of the CIR scenario are summarized, and the extent to which DNC properties support the CIR scenario is discussed.

Quasars as indicators of galactic ages

Theoretical models of QSO evolution and their use in estimating the ages of galaxies containing QSOs are discussed, with a focus on the problems involved in extrapolating from statistical data on relatively nearby objects (z less than 2) to characterize distant objects. Graphs and histograms are provided, and it is concluded that the sharp decrease in the number of QSOs between z = 2 and z =3, if not the result of obscuration or some other selection effect, makes it probable that the galaxy-formation processes which led to the formation of the QSOs occurred at z greater than 5. In that case, the QSOs would be one of the only observational probes of these processes. Mechanisms which could account for the time delay between galaxy formation and QSO turn-on are considered.

Timesharing performance as an indicator of pilot mental workload

The research was performed in two simultaneous phases, each intended to identify and manipulate factors related to operator mental workload. The first phase concerned evaluation of attentional deficits (workloads) in a timesharing task. Work in the second phase involved incorporating the results from these and other experiments into an expert system designed to provide workload metric selection advice to nonexperts in the field interested in operator workload. The results of the experiments conducted are summarized.

Event-related brain potentials as indices of mental workload and attentional allocation

Over the past decade considerable strides were made in explicating the antecedant conditions necessary for the elicitation, and the modulation of the amplitude and latency, of a number of components of the event-related brain potential (ERP). The focus of this report is on P300. The degree to which the psychophysiological measures contribute to issues in two real-world domains (communication devices for the motor impaired and the assessment of mental workload of aircraft pilots) are examined.

Small-scale volcanic landforms indicative of distributary tube systems

Surface features tens to hundreds of meters in size on Martian lava flows are revealed in high resolution Viking Orbiter images. Many of these morphological features form in response to certain flow emplacement mechanisms, eruptive styles, or rheological properties of the lava. Insight into the relationships between lava flow morphology and the emplacement and characteristics of magma is an ongoing areas of research and allows constraints to be placed on interpretation of Martian volcanism. This report focuses on pressure ridges, tumuli, and pressure plateaus which comprise a suite fo features characteristics of compound pahoehoe lava flows. Similar ridges and mounds were identified in the Tharsis region of Mars.
