Latin American Strategy for Research Infrastructures for High Energy, Cosmology, Astroparticle Physics LASF4RI for HECAP

The present document, the Latin American HECAP Physics Briefing Book, is the result of this ambitious grass roots effort. This report contains the work performed by the Preparatory Group to synthesize the main contributions and discussions for each of the topical working groups: Astronomy, Astrophysics and Astroparticle Physics; Cosmology; Dark Matter; Neutrinos; Electroweak and Strong Interactions, Higgs physics, Flavour and CP Physics and Beyond the Standard Model Physics; Instrumentation and Computing. This work aims at providing a landscape of existing expertise and capabilities. It will hopefully instruct some recommendations for further development of strategic research infrastructures relevant for future HECAP efforts in the region as well as for a continuous and successful involvement of Latin American HECAP researchers in the global arena.

Physics of Ultra-High Energy Density Relativistic Plasmas from Ordered Nanostructures

This award funded a four-year program at Colorado State University on the physics of ultra-high energy density plasmas generated by focusing femtosecond, >1021 Wcm-2 laser pulses onto ordered nanowire arrays. We used the ALEPH petawatt-class Ti:Sa laser with its high contrast 400 nm second harmonic beamline to irradiate arrays of Ni and TiO2 nanowires made by template assisted electrodeposition and atomic layer deposition over a wide range of average densities. We met two of the three original project goals: radial ion acceleration via doppler shifted K shell emission, and time and spectrally resolved K shell measurements. The main experimental advance was integrating the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) TREX ultrafast x-ray streak camera with a suite of spherically bent quartz Bragg crystal spectrometers built using Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) methodology. This is the first TREX-on-bent-quartz setup fielded at a femtosecond, >1021 Wcm-2 facility. It is now a permanent diagnostic at ALEPH and is offered to the LaserNetUS user community. The program produced three peer reviewed journal articles that acknowledge this award. The platform will continue at the upgraded CSU ATLAS facility, where the ALEPH laser is being upgraded to 2 PW.

First measurement of 𝑎$^{0}_{2}$⁡(1320) polarized photoproduction cross section

We measure for the first time the differential photoproduction cross section dσ/dt of the a 2 (1320) meson at an average photon beam energy of 8.5 GeV, using data with an integrated luminosity of 104 pb −1 collected by the GlueX experiment. We fully reconstruct the γp → ηπ 0 p reaction and perform a partial-wave analysis in the a 2 (1320) mass region with amplitudes that incorporate the linear polarization of the beam. This allows us to separate for the first time the contributions of natural- and unnatural-parity exchanges. Furthermore, these measurements provide novel information about the photoproduction mechanism, which is critical for the search for spin-exotic states.

Identification of low-momentum muons in the CMS detector using multivariate techniques in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

“Soft” muons with a transverse momentum below 10 GeV are featured in many processes studied by the CMS experiment, such as decays of heavy-flavor hadrons or rare tau lepton decays. Maximizing the selection efficiency for these muons, while simultaneously suppressing backgrounds from long-lived light-flavor hadron decays, is therefore important for the success of the CMS physics program. Multivariate techniques have been shown to deliver better muon identification performance than traditional selection techniques. To take full advantage of the large data set currently being collected during Run 3 of the CERN LHC, a new multivariate classifier based on a gradient-boosted decision tree has been developed. It offers a significantly improved separation of signal and background muons compared to a similar classifier used for the analysis of the Run 2 data. The performance of the new classifier is evaluated on a data set collected with the CMS detector in 2022 and 2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 62 fb -1 .

ForestFlow: predicting the Lyman-α forest clustering from linear to nonlinear scales

On large scales, the Lyman-α forest provides insights into the expansion history of the Universe, while on small scales, it imposes strict constraints on the growth history, the nature of dark matter, and the sum of neutrino masses. This work introduces ForestFlow, a novel framework that bridges the gap between large- and small-scale analyses, which have traditionally relied on distinct modeling approaches. Using conditional normalizing flows, ForestFlow predicts the two Lyman-α linear biases (b δ and b η ) and six parameters describing small-scale deviations of the three-dimensional flux power spectrum (P 3D ) from linear theory as a function of cosmology and intergalactic medium physics. These are then combined with a Boltzmann solver to make consistent predictions, from arbitrarily large scales down to the nonlinear regime, for P 3D and any other statistics derived from it. Trained on a suite of 30 fixed-and-paired cosmological hydrodynamical simulations spanning redshifts from z = 2 to 4.5, ForestFlow achieves 3 and 1.5% precision in describing P 3D and the one-dimensional flux power spectrum (P 1D ) from linear scales to k = 5 Mpc −1 and k ∥ = 4 Mpc −1 , respectively. Thanks to its conditional parameterization, ForestFlow shows similar performance for ionization histories and two ΛCDM model extensions – massive neutrinos and curvature – even though none of these are included in the training set. This framework will enable full-scale cosmological analyses of Lyman-α forest measurements from the DESI survey.

Addressing key physics problems in high-energy-density plasmas with a novel kinetic simulation capability

Many important physical processes in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and dense Z-pinch (DZP) experiments require a kinetic (velocity-space-dependent) description. Conventional particle-in-cell (PIC) methods are poorly suited for high-energy-density (HED) plasmas, due to restrictive time-step constraints and the inability to conserve energy. In a previous LDRD (21-FS-048), we demonstrated that a fully implicit PIC formulation overcomes these limitations: it conserves energy even when coupled with Coulomb collision models and can be solved efficiently with large grid cells and large time steps. Thus, it is feasible to use this method to study kinetic effects in ICF and DZP plasmas on hydro-like time and spatial scales. In this follow-on LDRD, we advanced this methodology into a high-fidelity tool for production-scale simulations and used it to answer key questions relevant to ICF and DZP experiment.

Magnetic field generation in a laser-irradiated thin collisionless plasma target by return current electrons carrying orbital angular momentum

Abstract Magnetized high energy density physics offers new opportunities for observing magnetic field-related physics for the first time in the laser–plasma context. We focus on one such phenomenon, which is the ability of a laser-irradiated magnetized plasma to amplify a seed magnetic field. We performed a series of fully kinetic 3D simulations of magnetic field amplification by a picosecond-scale relativistic laser pulse of intensity 4.2 × 10 18 W cm −2 incident on a thin overdense target. We observe axial magnetic field amplification from an initial 0.1 kT seed to 1.5 kT over a volume of several cubic microns, persisting hundreds of femtoseconds longer than the laser pulse duration. The magnetic field amplification is driven by electrons in the return current gaining favorable orbital angular momentum from the seed magnetic field. This mechanism is robust to laser polarization and delivers order-of-magnitude amplification over a range of simulation parameters.

General tensor structure for electron scattering in terms of invariant responses

The general structure of semi-inclusive polarized electron scattering from polarized spin-1/2 targets is developed for use at all energy scales, from modest-energy nuclear physics applications to use in very high energy particle physics. The leptonic and hadronic tensors that enter in the formalism are constructed in a general covariant way in terms of kinematic factors that are frame dependent but model independent and invariant response functions which contain all of the model-dependent dynamics. In the process of developing the general problem the relationships to the conventional responses expressed in terms of the helicity components of the exchanged virtual photon are presented. For semi-inclusive electron scattering with polarized electrons and polarized spin-1/2 targets one finds that 18 invariant response functions are required, each depending on four Lorentz scalar invariants. Additionally it is shown how the semi-inclusive cross sections are related via integrations over the momentum of the selected coincidence particle and sums over open channels.

High Energy Experimental Research Effort: Intensity Frontier Physics with Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (Final Technical Report DE-SC0017925)

The proposal “University of Florida High Energy Physics Intensity Frontier Research: Liquid Argon Detectors” requested one year of funding support for the PI, one postdoc and one graduate student to start their involvement in ongoing and upcoming experiments that use Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LAr TPCs) to reconstruct neutrino interactions. Specifically, it was proposed that the group join the Short Baseline Near Detector (SBND) at Fermilab and that the PI continue their involvement in the Deep Underground Neutrino Detector (DUNE).

Evolving Dark Sector and the Dark Dimension Scenario

String theory naturally leads to the expectation that dark energy is not stable, and may be evolving as captured by the Swampland de Sitter conjectures. Moreover, motivated by the distance conjecture, a unification of dark sector has been proposed, where the smallness of dark energy leads to one extra dimension of micron size with dark matter being the Kaluza--Klein graviton excitations in this extra dimension. We consider the natural possibility that the radius of the dark dimension varies as the dark energy decreases, leading to the variation of the dark matter mass. This correlates the decrease of the dark energy with the variation of the dark matter mass as they depend on the variations of a scalar field $ϕ$ controlling the radius of the extra dimension. A simple realization of this idea for small range of $ϕ$ is adequately captured by choosing a potential which is locally of the form $V=V_0\ {\rm exp}(-cϕ)$ and dark matter mass $m_{\rm DM}=m_0\ {\rm exp}(-c' ϕ)$ where the sign of $ϕ$ is chosen such that $c'\geq 0$ while we have two choices for the sign of $c$ depending on whether the dark dimension expands or shrinks when the dark energy dominates. We find excellent agreement with recent experimental data from DESI DR2 combined with SN measurements (from DES, Union3 or Pantheon+) and reproduces the same significance as CPL parametrization with the added benefit of providing a natural explanation for the apparent phantom behavior ($w<-1$) reported by DESI and DES based on a physical model. DESI and SN datasets independently favor non-zero values of $c'$ and $c$, respectively, both lying within the expected $\mathcal{O}(1)$ range suggested by the Swampland criteria. Moreover, our best fit value $c'\simeq 0.05 \pm 0.01$ is remarkably consistent with the experimental upper bound of $c'\lesssim 0.2$ demanded by the lack of detection of fifth force in the dark sector.

A Continuous Galactic Line Source of Axions: The Remarkable Case of 23 Na

Here, we argue that $^{23}$Na is a potentially significant source of galactic axions. For temperatures $\gtrsim 7 \times 10^8$K -- characteristic of carbon burning in the massive progenitors of supernovae and ONeMg white dwarfs -- the 440 keV first excited state of $^{23}$Na is thermally populated, with its repeated decays pumping stellar energy into escaping axions. Odd-A nuclear abundances are typically very low in high-temperature stellar environments (or absent entirely due to burn-up). $^{23}$Na is an exception: $\approx 0.1 M_\odot$ of the isotope is synthesized during carbon burning then maintained at $\approx 10^9$K for times ranging up to $6 \times 10^4$y. Using MESA simulations, a galactic model, and sampling over progenitor masses, locations, and evolutionary stages, we find a continuous flux at earth of $\langle ϕ_a \rangle \approx 22$/cm$^2$s for $g^\mathrm{eff}_{aNN} = 10^{-9}$. Some fraction of these axions convert to photons as they propagate through the galactic magnetic field, producing a distinctive 440 keV line $γ$ ray detectable by all-sky detectors like the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI). Assuming a 1$μ$G galactic magnetic field and a sufficiently light axion mass, we find that COSI will be able to probe $| g_{aNN}^\mathrm{eff} g_{a γγ} | \gtrsim1.8 \times 10^{-22}$ GeV$^{-1}$ at $3σ$ after two years of surveying.

Nucleon axial form factor from elementary target data

Precise neutrino-nucleon amplitudes are essential ingredients for predicting neutrino event rates in current and upcoming long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. A common neutrino interaction with a low reaction threshold and with most of the energy carried by two final state particles is quasielastic scattering, for which the nucleon axial form factor, 𝐹 𝐴⁡ (𝑄 2 ), is a dominant source of uncertainty. Improvements to the nucleon axial form factor rely on neutrino scattering data with elementary targets to reduce or eliminate the need for nuclear modeling systematics. This work examines constraints on the nucleon axial form factor that can be achieved from datasets of neutrino scattering on deuterium targets, Lattice QCD predictions, and from the recent hydrogen target data from the MINERvA Collaboration. Significant tension is found between hydrogen and deuterium target data, suggesting that extractions from deuterium underestimate both the central value and uncertainty of the form factor. Parametrizations for and uncertainties of the nucleon axial form factor using the 𝑧 expansion are provided.

High Multiplicity Trigger for long-lived particles in CMS detector

Searches for long-lived particles (LLPs) at the CMS experiment often involve unconventional event topologies that are difficult to efficiently select using standard trigger strategies. To improve sensitivity to such signatures during LHC Run 3 operation, a dedicated High Multiplicity Trigger (HMT) has been developed and deployed in the CMS trigger system. The trigger targets events containing unusually large numbers of hits in the CMS cathode strip chamber (CSC) muon detectors, a characteristic signature of several LLP scenarios involving displaced decays in the muon system. The HMT implementation, trigger logic, rate dependence with pileup, and operational stability are described. Optimized hit multiplicity thresholds are used to maintain acceptable trigger rates under high-luminosity and high-pileup conditions while preserving high efficiency across a broad range of LLP lifetimes and kinematic regimes. The trigger performance is evaluated using both simulated event samples and proton-proton collision data collected during Run 3 of the LHC. The HMT substantially extends the CMS sensitivity to non-standard signatures associated with LLP decays and provides a flexible platform for future searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.

A species scale-driven breakdown of effective field theory in time-dependent string backgrounds

We present a novel way in which effective field theory (EFT) can break down in cosmological string backgrounds depending on the behavior of the quantum gravity cutoff in infinite distance limits, known as the species scale $Λ_s$. Namely, EFT can break down if the species scale $Λ_s$ falls off so rapidly as the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) scale factor grows from some initial value $a_i$ to some final value $a_f$ that the physical momentum of an initial Hubble-sized perturbation $\sim H_i^{-1}$ grows to exceed the species scale. For EFT to remain valid, a new condition $H_i \frac{a_i}{a_f} \ll Λ_{s,f}$ must hold, which is distinct from Trans-Planckian conditions discussed in the literature. Using the universal relation $\frac{\nabla m}{m} \cdot \frac{\nabla Λ_s}{Λ_s} = \frac{1}{d-2}$ in the infinite distance limits of moduli space where $m$ is the mass scale of the lightest tower and $\nabla$ measures variations with respect to the canonical metric on moduli space, we show that spatially flat FRW solutions in the string landscape violate this condition or at best marginally satisfy it. However, we find that sufficiently large negative spatial curvature always avoids a breakdown. To avoid EFT breakdown, we derive an upper bound on the duration of quasi-de Sitter expansion that classically evolves to decelerated expansion. Our bound is proportional to the Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture (TCC) bound, with the advantage that it applies to any FRW solution in the string landscape. Finally, we distinguish EFT breakdown from TCC violation, the latter being a quantum gravity constraint rather than an EFT limitation. Perhaps our most surprising finding is that in any flat FRW solution that develops a weakly coupled string at future infinity the EFT inevitably breaks down.

Holographic Constraints on the String Landscape

We show that holography imposes strong and general constraints on scalar field potentials in the string landscape, determined by the asymptotic structure of the underlying spacetime. Applying these holographic consistency conditions, we identify broad classes of scalar potentials that are incompatible with a well-defined dual description. These include potentials with extended plateaus, excessively steep or shallow asymptotics, certain zero crossings, and specific alignments of stable AdS minima in moduli space. In particular, making the standard assumption that the CFT dual to a stable AdS vacuum must be realized as a worldvolume theory of a brane in string theory, we show that the brane selects an infinite-distance limit in moduli space where parametric scale separation is forbidden. Furthermore, the steepness and positivity of the potential are restricted in that infinite distance direction. We also find that requiring the validity of the effective theory in the future vacuum, a natural holographic criterion, automatically enforces the Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture (TCC) for classical cosmological solutions with positive potentials. Taken together, these constraints exclude the leading proposals to realize scale-separated AdS vacua and metastable de Sitter vacua in the string theory landscape such as DGKT and KKLT.

Review of searches for vector-like quarks, vector-like leptons, and heavy neutral leptons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the CMS experiment

The LHC has provided an unprecedented amount of proton-proton collision data, bringing forth exciting opportunities to address fundamental open questions in particle physics. These questions can potentially be answered by performing searches for very rare processes predicted by models that attempt to extend the standard model of particle physics. The data collected by the CMS experiment in 2015-2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV can be used to test the standard model with high precision and potentially uncover evidence for new particles or interactions. An interesting possibility is the existence of new fermions with masses ranging from the MeV to the TeV scale. Such new particles appear in many possible extensions of the standard model and are well motivated theoretically. New fermions may explain the appearance of three generations of leptons and quarks, the mass hierarchy across the generations, and the nonzero neutrino masses. In this report, the results of searches targeting vector-like quarks, vector-like leptons, and heavy neutral leptons at the CMS experiment are summarized. The complementarity of current searches for each type of new fermion is discussed, and combinations of several searches for vector-like quarks are presented. The discovery potential for some of these searches at the High-Luminosity LHC is also discussed.

Strategy and performance of the CMS long-lived particle trigger program in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

In the physics program of the CMS experiment during the CERN LHC Run 3, which started in 2022, the long-lived particle triggers have been improved and extended to expand the scope of the corresponding searches. These dedicated triggers and their performance are described in this paper, using several theoretical benchmark models that extend the standard model of particle physics. The results are based on proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector during 2022$-$2024 at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 123 fb$^{-1}$.
