Exploiting ν-dependence of projected energy correlators in HICs

We extend the recently derived factorization formula for energy-energy correlators to study the analytic structure of general ν-point projected energy correlators in heavy ion collisions. The ν-point projected energy correlators (or, ν-correlators) are an analytically continued family of the integer N-point projected energy correlators, which probe correlations between N final-state particles. By tracking the largest separation (χ) between the N particles, in vacuum, their structure is closely related to the DGLAP splitting functions and exhibits a classical scaling behavior ∼ 1/χ which is modified by resummation through the anomalous dimensions. We show that, in a thermal medium, the ν-correlators display non-trivial angular scaling already at the leading order in perturbation theory. We find that for non-integer values, particularly ν < 1, medium-induced jet function is enhanced compared to ν > 1. This is particularly manifested in the ratios of ν-correlators with respect to the two-point energy correlator, which encodes intrinsic angular information for ν < 1 when compared to large ν values. Moreover, for small-ν values, the ν-correlators appear to saturate at ν = 0.01 . We further confirm our leading-order numerical computations against simulated events from JEWEL for the parton-level production cross-section. Finally, we qualitatively discuss the effect of BFKL resummation for various values of ν.

Enhanced signal of momentum broadening in hard splittings for $γ$-tagged jets in a multistage approach

We investigate medium-induced modifications to jet substructure observables that characterize hard splitting patterns in central Pb-Pb collisions at the top energy of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Using a multistage Monte Carlo simulation of in-medium jet shower evolution, we explore flavor-dependent medium effects through simulations of inclusive and $γ$-tagged jets. The results show that quark jets undergo a non-monotonic modification compared to gluon jets in observables such as the Pb-Pb to $p$-$p$ ratio of the Soft Drop prong angle $r_g$, the relative prong transverse momentum $k_{T,g}$ and the groomed mass $m_g$ distributions. Due to this non-monotonic modification, $γ$-tagged jets, enriched in quark jets, provide surprisingly clear signals of medium-induced structural modifications, distinct from effects dominated by selection bias. This work highlights the potential of hard substructures in $γ$-tagged jets as powerful tools for probing the jet-medium interactions in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. All simulations for $γ$-tagged jet analyses carried out in this paper used triggered events containing at least one hard photon, which highlights the utility of these observables for future Bayesian analysis.

Visualizing How the Structure of Large-Radius Jets Shapes Their Wakes

The ATLAS collaboration has introduced and implemented a strategy for selecting and analyzing large-radius jets composed of skinny $R=0.2$ subjets in heavy ion collisions at the LHC. We show how measurements of these jets teach us about the resolution length $L_{\rm res}$ of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and can teach us how jet substructure shapes the wakes that jets excite in the QGP droplets through which they pass. We use Hybrid Model calculations to reproduce measurements of $R_{AA}$ for large-radius jets in PbPb collisions, and study their dependence on the angle between the two skinny subjets involved in the final reclustering step of an $R=1$ jet. We show how these observables can constrain the value of $L_{\rm res}$ and demonstrate that the ATLAS data rule out any picture in which an entire parton shower loses energy coherently as if it were a single entity. Determining the degree to which the QGP can resolve partons within a jet is central to the broader program of using jet quenching measurements to probe QGP. We make further use of this setup by analyzing the response of the medium to the passage of large-radius $R=2$ jets containing two skinny subjets in gamma-jet events. We introduce novel jet-shape observables that allow us to visualize the angular shape of the soft hadrons originating from the wakes that wide jets with two skinny subjets excite in a droplet of QGP, as a function of the angular separation between the subjets. We find that even when they are $\sim 0.8- 1$ radian apart, a single broad wake is produced. Only when the two subjets are even farther apart is the presence of two sub-wakes revealed. We show that the way in which jet structure shapes jet wakes can be visualized with similar clarity in experiments by using only those hadrons with low $p_T$. These observables thus offer a new and distinctive way of seeing jet wakes in heavy ion collision data.

Anisotropic flow and flow fluctuations of identified hadrons in Pb–Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The first measurements of elliptic flow of π ± , K ± , p+$\bar{p}$, K$_{S}^{0}$, Λ+$\bar{Λ}$, $\phi$, Ξ – +$\barΞ$ + , and Ω – +$\barΩ$ + using multiparticle cumulants in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 5.02 TeV are resented. Results obtained with two- (v 2 {2}) and four-particle cumulants (v 2 {4}) are shown as a function of transverse momentum, p T , for various collision centrality intervals. Combining the data for both v 2 {2} and v 2 {4} also allows us to report the first measurements of the mean elliptic flow, elliptic flow fluctuations, and relative elliptic flow fluctuations for various hadron species. These observables probe the event-by-event eccentricity fluctuations in the initial state and the contributions from the dynamic evolution of the expanding quark–gluon plasma. The characteristic features observed in previous p T -differential anisotropic flow measurements for identified hadrons with two-particle correlations, namely the mass ordering at low p T and the approximate scaling with the number of constituent quarks at intermediate p T , are similarly present in the four-particle correlations and the combinations of v 2 {2} and v 2 {4}. In addition, a particle species dependence of flow fluctuations is observed that could indicate a significant contribution from final state hadronic interactions. The comparison between experimental measurements and CoLBT model calculations, which combine the various physics processes of hydrodynamics, quark coalescence, and jet fragmentation, illustrates their importance over a wide p T range.

Measurements of jet observables sensitive to $\textit{b}$-quark fragmentation in $t\bar{t}$ events at the LHC with the ATLAS detector

Several observables sensitive to the fragmentation of $\textit{b}$ quarks into $\textit{b}$ hadrons are measured using 36 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Jets containing b hadrons are obtained from a sample of dileptonic $t\bar{t}$ events, and the associated set of charged-particle tracks is separated into those from the primary $\textit{pp}$ interaction vertex and those from the displaced b-decay secondary vertex. This division is used to construct observables that characterize the longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the $\textit{b}$ hadron within the jet. The measurements have been corrected for detector effects and provide a test of heavy-quark-fragmentation modeling at the LHC in a system where the top-quark decay products are color connected to the proton beam remnants. The unfolded distributions are compared with the predictions of several modern Monte Carlo parton-shower generators and generator tunes, and a wide range of agreement with the data is observed, with $\textit{p}$ values varying from 5 × 10 -4 to 0.98. These measurements complement similar measurements from $e^+e^-$ collider experiments in which the $\textit{b}$ quarks originate from a color singlet $Z/γ^{\ast}$.

Measurements at forward rapidity of elliptic flow of charged hadrons and open-heavy-flavor muons in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV

Here, we present the first forward-rapidity measurements of elliptic anisotropy of open-heavy-flavor muons at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurements are based on data samples of Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5 nb −1 . The measurements are performed in the pseudorapidity range 1.2 < |𝜂| < 2 and cover transverse momenta 1< 𝑝 𝑇 < 4 GeV/𝑐. The elliptic flow of charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum is also measured in the same kinematic range. We observe significant elliptic flow for both charged hadrons and heavy-flavor muons. The results show clear mass ordering of elliptic flow of light- and heavy-flavor particles. The magnitude of the measured 𝑣 2 is comparable to that in the midrapidity region. This indicates that there is no strong longitudinal dependence in the quark-gluon-plasma evolution between midrapidity and the rapidity range of this measurement at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV.

Identification of heavy, energetic, hadronically decaying particles using machine-learning techniques

Machine-learning (ML) techniques are explored to identify and classify hadronic decays of highly Lorentz-boosted W/Z/Higgs bosons and top quarks. Techniques without ML have also been evaluated and are included for comparison. The identification performances of a variety of algorithms are characterized in simulated events and directly compared with data. The algorithms are validated using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb -1 . Systematic uncertainties are assessed by comparing the results obtained using simulation and collision data. The new techniques studied in this paper provide significant performance improvements over non-ML techniques, reducing the background rate by up to an order of magnitude at the same signal efficiency.

Measurement of azimuthal anisotropy of muons from charm and bottom hadrons in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Azimuthal anisotropies of muons from charm and bottom hadron decays are measured in Pb+Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV . The data were collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2018 with integrated luminosities of 0.5 nb - 1 and 1.4 n b - 1 , respectively. The kinematic selection for heavy-flavor muons requires transverse momentum 4 <lt; p T < 30 GeV and pseudorapidity | η | < 2.0 . The dominant sources of muons in this p T range are semi-leptonic decays of charm and bottom hadrons. These heavy-flavor muons are separated from light-hadron decay muons and punch-through hadrons using the momentum imbalance between the measurements in the tracking detector and in the muon spectrometers. Azimuthal anisotropies, quantified by flow coefficients, are measured via the event-plane method for inclusive heavy-flavor muons as a function of the muon p T and in intervals of Pb+Pb collision centrality. Heavy-flavor muons are separated into contributions from charm and bottom hadron decays using the muon transverse impact parameter with respect to the event primary vertex. Non-zero elliptic ( v 2 ) and triangular ( v 3 ) flow coefficients are extracted for charm and bottom muons, with the charm muon coefficients larger than those for bottom muons for all Pb+Pb collision centralities. The results indicate substantial modification to the charm and bottom quark angular distributions through interactions in the quark-gluon plasma produced in these Pb+Pb collisions, with smaller modifications for the bottom quarks as expected theoretically due to their larger mass.

Strangeness-correlations on the pseudocritical line in ( 2 + 1 )-flavor QCD

We present some lattice QCD results on first ( χ 1 i ) and second ( χ 2 i ) cumulants of and correlations ( χ 11 i j ) among net baryon-number ( B ), strangeness ( S ) and electric charge ( Q ) along the pseudocritical line [ T p c ( μ B ) ] in the temperature ( T )–baryon chemical potential ( μ B ) phase diagram of ( 2 + 1 )-flavor QCD. We point out that violations of sum rules among second order cumulants, which hold in the isospin symmetric limit of vanishing electric charge chemical potential, are small along the T p c ( μ B ) for the entire range of μ B covered in the RHIC beam energy scan. For the strangeness neutral matter produced in heavy-ion collisions this leads to a close relation between χ 11 B S and χ 11 Q S . We compare lattice QCD results for χ 11 B S / χ 2 S along the T p c ( μ B ) line with preliminary experimental measurements of χ 11 B S / χ 2 S for collision energies 7.7 GeV ≤ s N N ≤ 62.4 GeV . While we find good agreements for s N N ≥ 39 GeV , differences are sizeable at smaller values of s N N . Moreover, we compare lattice QCD results for the ratio of the strangeness ( μ S ) to baryon ( μ B ) chemical potentials, which define a strangeness neutral system with fixed electric charge to baryon number density, with experimental results obtained by the STAR collaboration for μ S / μ B using strange baryon yields on the freeze-out line. Finally, we determine the baryon chemical potential at the freeze-out ( μ B f ) by comparing χ 1 B / χ 2 B along the T p c ( μ B ) with the experimentally measured net-proton cumulants χ 1 p / χ 2 p . We find that { μ B f , T p c ( μ B f ) } are consistent with the freeze-out parameters of the statistical-model fits to experimentally measured hadron yields for s N N ≥ 11.5 GeV . Search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into a top quark and a bottom quark at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into a top quark and a bottom quark is presented. The data analysed correspond to 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The production of a heavy charged Higgs boson in association with a top quark and a bottom quark, pp → tbH + → tbtb, is explored in the H + mass range from 200 to 2000 GeV using final states with jets and one electron or muon. Events are categorised according to the multiplicity of jets and b-tagged jets, and multivariate analysis techniques are used to discriminate between signal and background events. No significant excess above the background-only hypothesis is observed and exclusion limits are derived for the production cross-section times branching ratio of a charged Higgs boson as a function of its mass; they range from 3.6 pb at 200 GeV to 0.036 pb at 2000 GeV at 95% confidence level. The results are interpreted in the hMSSM and M$_{h}^{125}$ scenarios.

Measurement of D 0 -meson + hadron two-dimensional angular correlations in Au + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Open heavy flavor hadrons provide unique probes of the medium produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Due to their increased mass relative to light-flavor hadrons, long lifetime, and early production in hard-scattering interactions, they provide access to the full evolution of the partonic medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. This paper reports two-dimensional (2D) angular correlations between neutral D-mesons and unidentified charged particles produced in minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV. D 0 and D 0 ¯ mesons are reconstructed via their weak decay to K ∓ π ± using the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) in the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) experiment. Correlations on relative pseudorapidity and azimuth (Δη,ΔΦ) are presented for peripheral, mid-central and central collisions with D 0 transverse momentum from 2 to 10 GeV/c. Attention is focused on the 2D peaked correlation structure near the triggered D 0 -meson, the {\em near-side} (NS) peak, which serves as a proxy for a charm-quark containing jet. The correlated NS yield of charged particles per D 0 -meson and the 2D widths of the NS peak increase significantly from peripheral to central collisions. These results are compared with similar correlations using unidentified charged particles, consisting primarily of light-flavor hadrons, at similar trigger particle momenta. Similar per-trigger yields and widths of the NS correlation peak are observed. Here, the present results provide additional evidence that D 0 -mesons undergo significant interactions with the medium formed in heavy-ion collision and show, for the first time, significant centrality evolution of the NS 2D peak in the correlations of particles associated with a heavy-flavor hadron produced in these collisions.

Search for single production of vector-like T quarks decaying into Ht or Zt in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper describes a search for the single production of an up-type vector-like quark (T) decaying as T → Ht or T → Zt. The search utilises a dataset of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector during the 2015–2018 data-taking period of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb ₋1 . Data are analysed in final states containing a single lepton with multiple jets and b-jets. The presence of boosted heavy resonances in the event is exploited to discriminate the signal from the Standard Model background. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed, and 95% CL upper limits are set on the production cross section of T quarks in different decay channels. The results are interpreted in several benchmark scenarios to set limits on the mass and universal coupling strength (κ) of the vector-like quark. For singlet T quarks, κ values above 0.53 are excluded for all masses below 2.3 TeV. At a mass of 1.6 TeV, κ values as low as 0.35 are excluded. For T quarks in the doublet scenario, where the production cross section is much lower, κ values above 0.72 are excluded for all masses below 1.7 TeV, and this exclusion is extended to κ above 0.55 for low masses around 1.0 TeV.

Search for heavy Higgs bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for additional scalar (H) or pseudoscalar (A) Higgs bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set analyzed corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Final states with one or two charged leptons are considered. The invariant mass of the reconstructed top quark pair system and variables that are sensitive to the spin of the particles decaying into the top quark pair are used to search for signatures of the H or A bosons. The interference with the standard model top quark pair background is taken into account. A moderate signal-like deviation compatible with an A boson with a mass of 400 GeV is observed with a global significance of 1.9 standard deviations. New stringent constraints are reported on the strength of the coupling of the hypothetical bosons to the top quark, with the mass of the bosons ranging from 400 to 750 GeV and their total relative width from 0.5 to 25%. The results of the search are also interpreted in a minimal supersymmetric standard model scenario. Values of $m_\mathrm{A}$ from 400 to 700 GeV are probed, and a region with values of $\tan\beta$ below 1.0 to 1.5, depending on $m_\mathrm{A}$, is excluded at 95% confidence level.

Search for CME in U+U and Au+Au collisions in STAR with different approaches of handling backgrounds

We report the chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field between left- and right-handed quarks, caused by interactions with topological gluon fields from QCD vacuum fluctuations. We present two approaches to handle the dominant elliptic flow (v 2 ) background in the three-particle correlator (Δγ 112 ), sensitive to CME. In the first approach, we present the Δγ 112 and Δγ 123 measurements in U+U and Au+Au collisions. While hydrodynamic simulations including resonance decays and local charge conservation predict that Δγ 112 scaled by N part /ν 2 will be similar in U+U and Au+Au collisions, the projected B-field exhibits a distinct difference between the two systems and with varying N part . Therefore, U+U and Au+Au collisions provide configurations with different expectations for both CME signal and background. Moreover, the three-particle observable Δγ 123 scaled by N part /ν 3 provide baseline measurement for only the background. In the second approach, we handle the ν 2 background by measuring Δγ 112 with respect to the planes of spectators measured by Zero Degree Calorimeters and participants measured by Time Projection Chamber. These measurements contain different amounts of contributions from CME signal (along B-field, due to spectators) and ν 2 background (determined by the participant geometry). With the two Δγ 112 measurements, the possible CME signal and the background contribution can be determined. We report such a measurement in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 27GeV with the newly installed event plane detector, and report the new findings in U+U system where the spectator-participant plane correlations are expected to differ from those in Au+Au collisions.

Determining the jet transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ from inclusive hadron suppression measurements using Bayesian parameter estimation

We report a new determination of $\hat{q}$, the jet transport coefficient of the quark-gluon plasma. We use the JETSCAPE framework, which incorporates a novel multistage theoretical approach to in-medium jet evolution and Bayesian inference for parameter extraction. The calculations, based on the Matter and Lbt jet quenching models, are compared to experimental measurements of inclusive hadron suppression in Au + Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Pb + Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The correlation of experimental systematic uncertainties is accounted for in the parameter extraction. The functional dependence of $\hat{q}$ on jet energy or virtuality and medium temperature is based on a perturbative picture of in-medium scattering, with components reflecting the different regimes of applicability of Matter and Lbt. In the multistage approach, the switch between Matter and Lbt is governed by a virtuality scale Q 0 . Comparison of the posterior model predictions to the RHIC and LHC hadron suppression data shows reasonable agreement, with moderate tension in limited regions of phase space. The distribution of $\hat{q}/T^3$ extracted from the posterior distributions exhibits weak dependence on jet momentum and medium temperature T, with 90% credible region (CR) depending on the specific choice of model configuration. The choice of Matter + Lbt, with switching at virtuality Q 0 , has 90% CR of $2<\hat{q}/T^3<4$ for p T jet > 40 GeV=c. The value of Q 0 , determined here for the first time, is in the range 2.0-2.7 GeV.

Precise determination of the $B^0_S - \bar {B}^0_S$ oscillation frequency

Mesons comprising a beauty quark and strange quark can oscillate between particle ($B^0_s$) and antiparticle ($\bar{B}^0_s$) flavour eigenstates, with a frequency given by the mass difference between heavy and light mass eigenstates, Δm s . Here we present a measurement of Δm s using $B^0_s$ → $D^–_sπ^+$ decays produced in proton–proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The oscillation frequency is found to be Δm s = 17.7683 ± 0.0051 ± 0.0032 ps –1 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This measurement improves on the current Δm s precision by a factor of two. We combine this result with previous LHCb measurements to determine Δm s = 17.7656 ± 0.0057 ps –1 , which is the legacy measurement of the original LHCb detector.

Measurement of inclusive $J/ψ$ production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 54.4 GeV at STAR

This article presents measurements of inclusive J/ψ production at midrapidity (|y| < 1.0) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 54.4 GeV with the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A suppression of the J/ψ yield, quantified using the nuclear modification factors (R AA , R CP ), is observed with respect to the scaled production p + p in collisions. The dependence of R AA on collision centrality and J/ψ transverse momentum is measured with improved precision compared to previous measurements at 39 and 62.4 GeV, while the centrality dependence of R CP is measured and compared to the same results at 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV. In central collisions, no significant collision energy dependence of R AA is found within uncertainties for collision energies between 17.3 and 200 GeV. Two transport model calculations that include dissociation and regeneration contributions are consistent with the experimental results within uncertainties. Although no significant collision energy dependence of the J/ψ suppression in high energy heavy-ion collisions up to $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV is observed within uncertainties, the newly measured results at 54.4 GeV Au+Au collisions provide additional constraints on theoretical calculations of the hot medium evolution and cold nuclear matter effects.

Search for a W' boson decaying to a vector-like quark and a top or bottom quark in the all-jets final state at $\sqrt{\mathrm{s}}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for a heavy W' boson resonance decaying to a B or T vector-like quark and a t or a b quark, respectively. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Both decay channels result in a signature with a t quark, a Higgs or Z boson, and a b quark, each produced with a significant Lorentz boost. The all-hadronic decays of the Higgs or Z boson and of the t quark are selected using jet substructure techniques to reduce standard model backgrounds, resulting in a distinct three-jet W' boson decay signature. No significant deviation in data with respect to the standard model background prediction is observed. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the product of the W' boson cross section and the final state branching fraction. A W' boson with a mass below 3.1 TeV is excluded, given the benchmark model assumption of democratic branching fractions. In addition, limits are set based on generalizations of these assumptions. These are the most sensitive limits to date for this final state.
