Advanced high-performance large diameter Cs 2 HfCl 6 (CHC) and mixed halides scintillator

This paper reports on successful growth and performance evaluation of two large diameter Cs 2 HfCl 6 (CHC) and Cs 2 HfCl 4 Br 2 (CHCB), both recently developed scintillator crystals. The discovery of Cs 2 HfCl 6 (CHC) as a scintillator has lately generated much interest in this material and its family, which belongs to the K 2 PtCl 6 cubic crystal structure. CHC is an intrinsic scintillator that is non-hygroscopic (slightly deliquescent, i.e., slightly moisture sensitive but does not deteriorate much when left in air), has no self-radioactivity, provides excellent energy resolution, and has excellent non-proportionality. CHC has a moderate density of 3.9 g/cm 3 and an effective atomic number of 58. Reported in this paper are transparent crack-free single crystal CHC and CHCB boules of one inch in diameter, both grown using the vertical Bridgman method. Samples retrieved from the boules, sized 23 mm × 30 mm and 23 mm × 26 mm, respectively, are characterized for their optical and scintillation properties. Energy resolutions of 3.5% and 3.7% (FWHM) at 662 keV, respectively, are reported. Light yields of 23,000 ph/MeV and 20,000 ph/MeV have been calculated for the large diameter CHC and CHCB crystals, respectively. Results comparable to previously reported results for smaller crystals have been obtained. Studies on decay time, non-proportionality, as well as detector characterization are also reported.

Overcoming Shockley-Queisser limit using halide perovskite platform?

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reveals that the global temperature has reached its highest level in the last 2,000 years. Development of emissions-free electrification technologies such as photovoltaics (PV) can be a great paramountcy to balance the climate pressure and the growing demand on energy. Although many PV technologies have been demonstrated so far, all the single-junction PVs are still subjected to the well-known efficiency cap of the Shockley-Queisser limit (33.7%), with most of the absorbed solar energy lost into heat. In parallel to delicate system-level designs, such as tandem, multi-junction, photothermal, or up-/down-conversion, we ask the question about the feasibility of overcoming the SQ limit at material level. In this study, we first dissect the origin of the limit, and then, by using the emerging perovskite as the platform, we list several potential pathways (i.e., hot carrier, multi-exciton generation, intermediate band gap, and ferroelectricity that have been newly discovered or can be introduced in the perovskite) to the roadmap of exceeding the SQ limit.

Crystal growth, scintillation properties & fast neutron-gamma discrimination of cubic halide perovskite CsCaCl 3 :(Eu 2+ , Tl + )

The vast variety of nuclear security applications require radiation detection materials tailored to their operational needs. A scintillator’s properties are strongly influenced by the choice of luminescent dopant, which facilitates customization to different applications. In this work, transparent Ø12 mm single crystals of undoped CsCaCl 3 , CsCaCl 3 :1% Eu, CsCaCl 3 :1% Tl, and CsCaCl 3 :1% Eu, 1% Tl were grown via the Vertical Bridgman method. Their scintillation properties and fast neutron-gamma discrimination capabilities were investigated. Undoped CsCaCl 3 had a light yield of 2,500 ph/MeV, which is the highest reported to date for this CVL material. The incorporation of Eu 2+ or Tl + into CsCaCl 3 as luminescence centers resulted in significantly higher light yields of ∼16,000 ph/MeV and energy resolutions of ∼8% at 662 keV. Compared to the single dopant counterparts, CsCaCl 3 :Eu, Tl had significantly suppressed afterglow; however, this came at the cost of reduced light yield. Among the materials tested, only CsCaCl 3 :Tl showed effective fast neutron and gamma discrimination capabilities, achieving a Figure of Merit of 3.2 between gamma-rays and fast neutron captures that produce protons and 1.6 between gamma-rays and fast neutron captures that produce alpha particles.

Crystallographic Snapshots of Pre- and Post-Lanthanide Halide Hydrolysis─Reaction Products Captured by the 4-Amino-1,2,4-triazole Ligand

Reactions of lanthanide(III) chloride salts with 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) in azole melts have led to the isolation of both hydrolysis and non-hydrolysis products in the same synthesis with the inclusion of a variety of ligands, anions, and water, allowing us to capture crystallographic snapshots of different forms and intermediate hydrolysis fragments. The structural studies reported here include anhydrous and hydrated nonhydrolyzed complexes which were isolated alongside hydrolysis products giving oxide/hydroxide lanthanide(III) dimers, tetramers, and ultimately hexamers. The compounds isolated include [Nd 2 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 4 (4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 2 ], [Ce 2 Cl 4 (μ 2 -Cl) 2 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 4 ] n , [Ce 2 (µ 2 -Cl) 4 (µ 2 -OH) 2 (µ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 2 ] n , [Ln 4 Cl 4 (µ 2 -Cl) 4 (µ 3 -OH) 4 (µ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 4 ] n •2nH 2 O (Ln = Ce, Nd), and [Ce 6 Cl 6 (µ 6 -O 0.5 )(µ 3 -Cl 0.5 ) 4 (µ 3 -Cl 0.75 ) 3 (µ 3 -OH) 0.75 (µ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ((OH 2 ) 0.25 ) 2 ] 2 [CeCl 6 ][Cl 9 ]•xH 2 O. In all complexes all lanthanide atoms are pairwise connected via one or more 4-NH2-1,2,4-Triaz ligands and sometimes additional Cl - anions.

Tunable Lithium-Ion Transport in Mixed-Halide Argyrodites Li 6–x PS 5–x ClBr x : An Unusual Compositional Space

Argyrodites, with fast lithium-ion conduction, are promising for applications in rechargeable solid-state lithium-ion batteries. In this article, we report a new compositional space of argyrodite superionic conductors, Li 6– x PS 5– x ClBr x [0 ≤ x ≤ 0.8], with a remarkably high ionic conductivity of 24 mS/cm at 25 °C for Li 5.3 PS 4.3 ClBr 0.7 . In addition, the extremely low lithium migration barrier of 0.155 eV makes Li 5.3 PS 4.3 ClBr 0.7 highly promising for low-temperature operation. Average and local structure analyses reveal that bromination ( x > 0) leads to (i) retention of the parent Li 6 PS 5 Cl structure for a wide range of x in Li 6– x PS 5– x ClBr x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.7), (ii) co-occupancy of Cl – , Br – , and S 2– at 4a/4d sites, and (iii) gradually increased Li + -ion dynamics, eventually yielding a “liquid-like” Li-sublattice with a flattened energy landscape when x approaches 0.7. In addition, the diversity of anion species and Li-deficiency in halogen-rich Li 6– x PS 5– x ClBr x induce hypercoordination and coordination entropy for the Li-sublattice, also leading to enhanced Li + -ion transport in Li 6– x PS 5– x ClBr x . This study demonstrates that mixed-anion framework can help stabilize highly conductive structures in a compositional space otherwise unstable with lower anion diversity.

Cage Molecules Stabilize Lead Halide Perovskite Thin Films

The environmental stability of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) materials needs to increase to enable their widespread adoption in thin-film solar and optoelectronic devices. Molecular additives have recently emerged as an effective strategy for regulating HOIP crystal growth and passivating defects. However, to date the choice of additives is largely limited to a dozen or so materials under the design philosophy that high crystallinity is a prerequisite for stable HOIP thin films. Here, in this study, we incorporate porous organic cages (POCs) as functional additives into perovskite thin films for the first time and investigate the HOIP-POC interaction via a combined experimental and computational approach. POCs are significantly larger than the small-molecule additives explored for HOIP synthesis to date but much smaller than polymeric sealants. Partially amorphized composites of MAPbI 3 (methylammonium lead iodide, HOIP) and RCC3 (an amine POC) form a network-like surface topography and lead to an increase in the optical bandgap from 1.60 to 1.63 eV. Further in situ optical imaging suggests that RCC3 can delay the MAPbI 3 film degradation onset up to 50x under heat and humidity stresses, showing promise for improving reliability in HOIP-based solar-cell and light-emitting applications. Furthermore, there is evidence of molecular interactions between RCC3 and MAPbI 3 , as fingerprinted by the suppressed N-H stretching mode in MA + from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and density functional theory (DFT) simulations that suggest strong hydrogen bonding between MA + and RCC3. Given the diversity of POCs and HOIPs, our work opens a new avenue to stabilize HOIPs via tailored molecular interactions with functional organic materials.
