Applications of thermal energy storage in the cement industry

In the manufacture of cement, literally trillions of Btu's are rejected to the environment each year. The purpose of this feasibility study program was to determine whether thermal energy storage could be used to conserve or allow alternative uses of this rejected energy. This study identifies and quantifies the sources of rejected energy in the cement manufacturing process, established use of this energy, investigates various storage system concepts, and selects energy conservation systems for further study. Thermal performance and economic analyses are performed on candidate storage systems for four typical cement plants representing various methods of manufacturing cement. Through the use of thermal energy storage in conjunction with waste heat electric power generation units, an estimated 2.4 x 10 to the 13th power Btu/year, or an equivalent on investment of the proposed systems are an incentive for further development.

Comparison of two different raindrop disdrometers

Different types of impact sensors, used for the measurement of drop size distribution, are described and compared. All of them generate an electrical output which is to a first order a function of the velocity and mass of impacting drops within the size range of 0.25 to 5.0 mm. The disdrometers discussed include an active styrofoam disdrometer, a passive plexiglass sensor, and a cast epoxy disdrometer sensor. The sensors are calibrated by dropping water drops of known size on the sensor, and using an oscilloscope to measure peak amplitude. Similar response characteristics are observed for the active styrofoam disdrometer and the passive plexiglass and brass sensors. The cast epoxy impact sensor is noted to have a faster response and to be more sturdy than the styrofoam or plexiglass sensors.

Status of the DOE /STOR/-sponsored national program on hydrogen production from water via thermochemical cycles

A pure thermochemical cycle is a system of linked regenerative chemical reactions which accepts only water and heat and produces hydrogen. Thermochemical cycles are potentially a more efficient and cheaper means of producing hydrogen from water than is the generation of electricity followed by electrolysis. The Energy Storage Systems Division of the Department of Energy is currently funding a national program on thermochemical hydrogen production. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is responsible for the technical management of this program. The goal is to develop a cycle which can potentially operate with an efficiency greater than 40% using a heat source providing a maximum available temperature of 1150 K. A closed bench-scale demonstration of such a cycle would follow. This cycle would be labeled a 'reference cycle' and would serve as a baseline against which future cycles would be compared.

High freezing point fuels used for aviation turbine engines

Broadened-specification aviation fuels could be produced from a greater fraction of crude source material with improvements in fuel supply and price. These fuels, particularly those with increased final boiling temperatures, would have higher freezing temperatures than current aviation turbine fuels. For the small but significant fraction of commercial flights where low fuel temperatures make higher freezing-point fuel use unacceptable, adaptations to the fuel or fuel system may be made to accommodate this fuel. Several techniques are discussed. Fuel heating is the most promising concept. One simple design uses existing heat rejection from the fuel-lubricating oil cooler, another uses an engine-driven generator for electrical heating.

Comparison of fuel-cell and diesel integrated energy systems and a conventional system for a 500-unit apartment

The electrical and thermal energy utilization efficiencies of a 500 unit apartment complex are analyzed and compared for each of three energy supply systems. Two on-site integrated energy systems, one powered by diesel engines and the other by phosphoric-acid fuel cells were compared with a conventional system which uses purchased electricity and on-site boilers for heating. All fuels consumed on-site are clean, synthetic fuels (distillate fuel oil or pipeline quality gas) derived from coal. Purchased electricity was generated from coal at a central station utility. The relative energy consumption and economics of the three systems are analyzed and compared.

A systems examination of the opportunities of coal for California

Because of decreasing availability of petroleum fuels and natural gas, it is imperative that alternative means be developed for meeting demands. The options available for importing energy derived from coal are examined. These include: (1) electric power generated from coal; (2) coal gasification near the mine site for conversion to substitute natural gas or liquid products such as methanol or hydrocarbons; and (3) converting the coal directly to liquid hydrocarbons similar to a synthetic crude oil. Comment is made on the long lead times required between conception and completion of facilities of this type. Because of political and economic impediments, excessive delays have resulted in cancellation of projects. The need for statesmen and citizens with vision and courage to act is summarized.

High-freezing-point fuels used for aviation turbine engines

Broadened-specification aviation fuels could be produced from a greater fraction of crude source material with improvements in fuel supply and price. These fuels, particularly those with increased final boiling temperatures, would have higher freezing temperatures than current aviation turbine fuels. The higher-freezing-point fuels can be substituted in the majority of present commercial flights, since temperature data indicate that in-flight fuel temperatures are relatively mild. For the small but significant fraction of commercial flights where low fuel temperatures make higher freezing-point fuel use unacceptable, adaptations to the fuel or fuel system may be made to accommodate this fuel. Several techniques are discussed. Fuel heating is the most promising concept. One simple system design uses existing heat rejection from the fuel-lubricating oil cooler, another uses an engine-driven generator for electrical heating. Both systems offer advantages that outweigh the obvious penalties.
