Electron microscopic determination of the metastable dissociation region in the system Li sub 2SiO3-SiO sub 2

Seven glasses with an alkali oxide content in the range 9.57 to 29.53 mole percent were investigated. The temperature at which the transition of microheterogeneous mixing to the condition of mutual solubility occurs on heating is found. It is found that the altered constituent composition results in the alteration in the percentage amount of the coexisting phases.

Electron impact excitation of H2 - Rydberg band systems and the benchmark dissociative cross section for H Lyman-alpha

The cross sections sigma R 1 (2p) for excitation of H Ly-alpha emission produced by electron impact on H2 is reexamined. A more accurate estimate for sigma R 1 (2p) is obtained based on Born approximation estimates of the H2 Rydberg system cross sections using measured relative excitation functions. The obtained value is (8.18 + or -1.2) x 10 to the -18th sq cm at 100 eV, a factor of 0.69 below the value universally applied to cross section measurements over the past decade. Cross sections for the H2 Rydberg systems fixed in magnitude by the Born approximation have also been obtained using experimentally determined excitation functions. Accurate analytic expressions for these cross sections allow the direct calculation of rate coefficients.

Dissociative and double photoionization cross sections of NO from threshold to 120 A

The partial photoionization cross sections for producing the NO(+) parent ion and the O(+), N(+), and NO(2+) fragmentations from neutral NO are presented from 120 to 614 A. The results indicate predissociation of the 3 pi (21.72 eV) and B-prime 1Sigma(+) (22.73 eV) electronic states of NO(+). The photoionization threshold for double ionization was found to be 39.4 + or - 0.12 eV.

The effect of bond functions on dissociation energies

The procedure employing bond functions recently suggested by Wright and Buenker has been applied to the N2 X 1 Sigma g + potential curve within the CAS SCF + MRSD CI treatment of electron correlation. The basis set used herein is identical to that employed by these authors in their SCF + CI calculations. The De and and the shape of the resulting potential curve, as judged by the computed vibrational levels, is not so accurate as would be expected from the results reported by Wright and Buenker (1984). The results indicate that using the CI superposition errors associated with bond functions to cancel basis set incompleteness depends on the treatment of the electron correlation.

Immunofluorescence localization of dissociation supernatant and extracellular matrix components in Lytechinus pictus sectioned embryos

Indirect immunofluorescence was used to localize specific extracellular components in embryos of the sea urchin Lytechinus pictus. Hyalin and S2 (a group of components found in the disaggregation supernatant from Strongylocentrotus purpuratus blastulae) were uniformly present at all stages (unfertilized up to 32 hr) except hyalin could not be detected at the 12 hour early blastula stage. Laminin was found in 16 cell, 32 cell, 6 hour, 18 hour, 24 hour, and 32 hour stages, with especially bright fluorescence at 18 hours. Collagen I was present at all stages (freshly fertilized up to 32 hour) except little was detected at 12 hours. Fibronectin was uniformly present in blastocoelar fibers stained with anto-collagen I and anti-fibronectin. These results were compared with those for S. purpuratus to produce an overview of the localization of specific extracellular matrix components during development of two species of sea urchins. The results set the stage for future studies that will examine the function of these components at the various developmental stages.

A survey of the reaction rate constants for the thermal dissociation and recombination of nitrogen and oxygen

The objective of the present report is to survey the various values of forward and backward reaction rate constants used by investigators in the field of high-temperature (T greater than 2000 K) gas reactions involving nitrogen and oxygen only. The objective is to find those values that correlate well so that they can be used for the studies of hypersonic flow and supersonic combustion with reasonable confidence. Relatively good agreement among these various values is observed for temperatures lower than 10,000 K.

On the dissociation energies and bonding in NiCO(+) and TiCO(+)

Ab initio calculations on the NiCO(+) and TiCO(+) molecules are carried out using large Gaussian basis sets and extensive treatment of electron correlation. The NiCO(+) molecule is found to have a 2Sigma(+) ground state with a 2Delta state only 2.1 kcal/mole higher in energy. The Ni(+)-CO structure is about 11 and 28 kcal/mole more stable than the Ni(+)-OC and the T-shaped structures, respectively.

A dissociation of objective and subjective workload measures in assessing the impact of speech controls in advanced helicopters

Among the new technologies that are expected to aid helicopter designers are speech controls. Proponents suggest that speech controls could reduce the potential for manual control overloads and improve time-sharing performance in environments that have heavy demands for manual control. This was tested in a simulation of an advanced single-pilot, scout/attack helicopter. Objective performance indicated that the speech controls were effective in decreasing the interference of discrete responses during moments of heavy flight control activity. However, subjective ratings indicated that the use of speech controls required extra effort to speak precisely and to attend to feedback. Although the operational reliability of speech controls must be improved, the present results indicate that reliable speech controls could enhance the time-sharing efficiency of helicopter pilots. Furthermore, the results demonstrated the importance of using multiple assessment techniques to completely assess a task. Neither the objective nor the subjective measures alone provided complete information. It was the contrast between the measures that was most informative.

Photo-thermo-dissociation. I - A general mechanism for destroying molecules

Photothermodissociation (PTD) of an isolated molecule is the name of the process when a photon is absorbed by an electronic transition, the energy is transferred to the vibrations (hot molecule) and then an atom or a fragment is ejected. A statistical physics treatment is presented that goes beyond the thermal approximation and fully takes into account the isolation of the system. A model is given that permits an explicit calculation of the ejection rates of hydrogen and carbon fragments from aromatic molecules as a function of their size and internal energy. Then, the lifetime of species against PTD in different astronomical radiation fields will result when a precise dynamical evolution of their internal energy can be established.

Reduced and simplified chemical kinetics for air dissociation using Computational Singular Perturbation

The Computational Singular Perturbation CSP methods is employed (1) in the modeling of a homogeneous isothermal reacting system and (2) in the numerical simulation of the chemical reactions in a hypersonic flowfield. Reduced and simplified mechanisms are constructed. The solutions obtained on the basis of these approximate mechanisms are shown to be in very good agreement with the exact solution based on the full mechanism. Physically meaningful approximations are derived. It is demonstrated that the deduction of these approximations from CSP is independent of the complexity of the problem and requires no intuition or experience in chemical kinetics.

The dissociation energy of He2(+)

Ab initio potential energy curves for He2(+) are computed using full CI wavefunctions in conjuction with large Gaussian and Slater basis sets. The computed curves yield rotational-vibrational transitions with errors of less than 1/cm. They also yield quasi-bound levels with energies and lifetimes in reasonable agreement with translational spectroscopy measurements. The best D(e) is estimated to be 2.470 eV. Green's function Monte Carlo calculations yield a very similar value, 2.466 + or - 0.005.

A parametric study of dissociation and ionization models at 12 km/sec

Thermochemical nonequilibrium-solution dependence on available models for the chemical reaction rates is examined. Solutions from the Kang and Dunn (1973) reaction-rate set, the Park rate set of 1987, and the Park rate set of 1991 are compared. The blunt-nosed, axisymmetric geometry considered is a 60-deg sphere cone with nose radius of 1.07 m and cicular aft skirt. The nonequilibrium test case is 12 km/sec entry into the earth's atmosphere at 80 km altitude. The model variations are implemented into the Langley aerothermodynamics upwind relaxation algorithm code. While variations in the reaction rates have no effect on the surface pressure distribution and little effect on the convective heating, the effect on degree of ionization and radiative heating can be a factor of three.

Dissociation and recombination of positive holes in minerals

The formation mechanisms are described of positive holes - electronic defects in the O2 sublattice - with attention given to detecting the positive surface charge of minerals with these holes. Charge distribution analysis (CDA) is presented which measures dielectric polarization in an inhomogeneous field. CDA can be applied to the detection of the peroxide/superoxide functionality caused by positive holes on the surface. It is demonstrated with obsidian that the measurements provide data on O(-) mobility as a function of surface-charge carrier density and on O(-) generation as a function of temperature.
