Analysis of SCALE Criticality and Sensitivity Calculations for Reflected HEU Cylinders

The SCALE code package offers multiple nuclear data libraries and sensitivity and uncertainty (S/U) methods supporting and derived from Monte Carlo (MC) transport. The CSAS and TSUNAMI-3D sequences use KENO MC, utilizing either continuous-energy (CE) cross sections or multigroup (MG) cross section libraries. TSUNAMI-3D has two CE calculational methods: the iterated fission probability (IFP) method, and the Contribution-Linked eigenvalue sensitivity/Uncertainty estimation via Tracklength importance CHaracterization (CLUTCH) method. Previous work has shown poor agreement between CLUTCH and confirmatory direct perturbation calculations in specific applications (e.g., fissionable and polyethylene reflectors). The HEU-MET-FAST-084 (HMF-084) International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project evaluation consists of 27 cylindrical highly enriched uranium metal cores with 14 unique reflector materials of 0.5 and 1 in. thicknesses. Included in this list of reflector materials are natural uranium and polyethylene. This work utilized SCALE 6.2.4 models of the HMF-084 evaluation, with additional non-physical configurations to test both the MG bias and CLUTCH functionality across a variety of reflector material thicknesses. The evaluation’s use of concentric cylinders allowed for examination of several MG self-shielding methods: infinite homogenous, cylindrical, and spherical. The results indicate that the use of polyethylene reflectors with CLUTCH is not fundamentally impossible but sensitive to geometry. The poor performance of CLUTCH with fissionable reflectors was reaffirmed. The 2 in. and greater polyethylene-reflected calculations demonstrate the necessity of using the 302-group library for fast systems. The nickel MG bias was substantial, as discussed in a companion paper, as were cobalt and iron.

MASK4 Test Campaign for Sandia WaveBot Device

This data and report details the findings from a wave tank test focused on production of useful work of a wave energy converter (WEC) device. The experimental system and test were specifically designed to validate models for power transmission throughout the WEC system. Additionally, the validity of co-design informed changes to the power take-off (PTO) were assessed and shown to provide the expected improvements in system performance. These data describe the "MASK4" wave tank test of the Sandia WaveBot device. The WaveBot device has been tested a number of times in different permutations at the US Navy's Maneuvering and Sea Keeping (MASK) basin. Each test in this series is referred to as MASK1, MASK2, etc. The WaveBot device was first tested in one degree of freedom (heave) in 2016. This MASK1 test focused primarily on system identification and modeling. After MASK1, major modifications were performed to improve the overall real-time control and measurement system, improve the heave drive train, and add surge and pitch degrees of freedom. The second set of testing, which was broken up in to two stages: MASK2A and MASK2B, focused on bench testing and closed-loop control performance as well as nonlinear modeling. MASK3 then focused on multi-input, multi-output modeling and control for maximization of electrical power. The attached report presents the results from MASK4, which focuses on detailed modeling of the power conversion chain and validation co-design principles by way of the introduction of a magnetic spring. The test log, report, and data from the MASK4 test of the WaveBot augmented with a tunable magnetic spring. Processing codes can be found at the Github link below.

Using the CAP88 Plume Model & Dose Assessment Code for the FTWC Project

The Environmental Protection & Compliance Division (EPC) uses the Clean Air Act Assessment Package – 1988 (CAP88) plume model and dose assessment code to evaluate measured emissions or projected emissions of airborne radionuclides from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) facilities. This software package will use facility data (e.g., stack height and exit velocity), emissions parameters (chemical form and quantity), and environmental data (wind speed and direction) to predict downwind concentrations of radioactive material and subsequent dose to a member of the public at that location. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved CAP88 for use in demonstrating compliance with the Radionuclide NESHAP2, that portion of the Clean Air Act addressing emissions of airborne radioactive material from Department of Energy facilities. EPC Division has two procedures which discuss the use of CAP88.

Analysis of SCALE Criticality and Sensitivity Calculations for Reflected HEU Cylinders [Slides]

The SCALE code package offers multiple nuclear data libraries supporting Monte Carlo transport, with sensitivity and uncertainty methods derived from MC transport solutions. Several libraries are multigroup, which introduce bias differing by system. Previous work has shown poor S/U results in several reflector materials: ICSBEP benchmark HMF-084 was selected to analyze biases and S/U method applicability to a variety of reflectors. Prior and ongoing work found inaccuracies in CSAS and TSUNAMI results, which were further investigated utilizing the HEU-MET-FAST-084 ICSBEP critical benchmark, chosen for its geometrical simplicity and variety of reflector materials. Perturbation of reflector thickness across various reflector materials allowed for an assortment of materials is to be tested swiftly for each sequence and method. Observation was an increasing bias of MG $k_{eff}$ relative to CE, in both direction and magnitude. IFP produced extremely reliable results. >85% of CLUTCH cases were found satisfactory.

Deep Learning for Fish Identification from Sonar Data (CRADA 481 Final Report)

In eastern regions of the United States, the American eel is a species of management and regulatory concern because of significant population declines, despite the species’ previous abundance in all tributaries of rivers flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. The American eel is also a candidate for listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. While hydropower construction and operation are only one of several factors contributing to this population decline, such a listing could impose additional regulatory challenges for a large number of hydropower projects. In this CRADA project, we improved technologies for identifying migrating eels with the goal of reducing the cost and time required for future American eel hydropower impact assessment and mitigation studies, while maintaining accuracy. We built on results from a previous FOA project (FOA# DE-FOA-0001662), led by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), which developed a highly accurate, deep-learning method for identifying migrating eels from imaging sonar data. The current study aimed to further optimize this deep-learning model, originally designed for image classification, and to develop an object detection software capable of identifying fish from sonar videos in real time, enabling the detection of events like fish migrations and specific species, such as the American eel, at hydropower dams. The data conversion algorithms were packaged as software with a graphical user interface, and the software is evaluated by external collaborators. We focused on the American eel in this project and explored the transferability of the developed deep learning models to the sea lamprey, given the similar body shape and swimming behavior between the two species.

Real-Time XFEL Data Analysis at SLAC and NERSC: a Trial Run of Nascent Exascale Experimental Data Analysis

X-ray scattering experiments using Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) are a powerful tool to determine the molecular structure and function of unknown samples (such as COVID-19 viral proteins). XFEL experiments are a challenge to computing in two ways: i) due to the high cost of running XFELs, a fast turnaround time from data acquisition to data analysis is essential to make informed decisions on experimental protocols; ii) data collection rates are growing exponentially, requiring new scalable algorithms. Here we report our experiences analyzing data from two experiments at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) during September 2020. Raw data were analyzed on NERSC's Cori XC40 system, using the Superfacility paradigm: our workflow automatically moves raw data between LCLS and NERSC, where it is analyzed using the software package CCTBX. We achieved real time data analysis with a turnaround time from data acquisition to full molecular reconstruction in as little as 10 min -- sufficient time for the experiment's operators to make informed decisions. By hosting the data analysis on Cori, and by automating LCLS-NERSC interoperability, we achieved a data analysis rate which matches the data acquisition rate. Furthermore, completing data analysis with 10 mins is a first for XFEL experiments and an important milestone if we are to keep up with data collection trends.

Analysis of SCALE Criticality and Sensitivity Calculations for Reflected HEU Cylinders [Abstract]

The SCALE code package offers several nuclear data libraries to support Monte Carlo (MC) transport, as well as MC-based derivation of $\kappa$ eff sensitivity and uncertainty (S/U) data. The CSAS sequence using the KENO MC code can utilize continuous-energy (CE) cross sections, or pre-generated multigroup (MG) cross section libraries. The use of MG libraries introduces bias into calculations in exchange for faster transport solutions. The TSUNAMI-3D sequence also utilizes KENO MC calculations. TSUNAMI-3D has two CE calculational methods: the Iterated Fission Probability (IFP) method, and the Contribution-Linked eigenvalue sensitivity/Uncertainty estimation via Tracklength importance CHaracterization (CLUTCH) method. Previous work has shown poor agreement between CLUTCH and confirmatory direct perturbation calculations in specific applications, e.g., fissionable and polyethylene reflectors

Electricity Baseline 2022 Background Data and Log File

The ElectricityLCI v2 Python package (https://github.com/USEPA/ElectricityLCI/tree/v2.0) was used to generate the 2022 electricity baseline: a regionalized life cycle inventory model of U.S. electricity generation, consumption, and distribution using standardized facility and generation data. ElectricityLCI implements a local data store for downloading and accessing public data on an individual's computer. The data store follows the folder definition provided by USEPA's esupy Python package (https://github.com/USEPA/esupy), which utilized the appdirs Python dependency (https://pypi.org/project/appdirs/). This submission includes the background data used to generate the 2022 electricity baseline inventory. Each zip archive stores the source files as found in their data stores. Sub-folders in each of the data stores are archived separately. For example, stewi.zip contains the JSON files, while stewi.facility.zip is the 'facility' sub-folder of stewi data store that stores the parquet files. To reproduce the data store, extract each zip file and drag-and-drop sub-folders in to their appropriate root folders to recreate the data stores, then copy the root folders to your data store folder (as returned by running the following on the command line: `python -c "import appdirs; print(appdirs.user_data_dir())"`). The main five data stores include: 'electricitylci', 'facilitymatcher', 'fedelemflowlist', 'stewi', and 'stewicombo'. The log file generated by the 2022 model run is also included, which contains the statements at the DEBUG level and above.
