Application of Eh-pH Diagrams on Acid Leaching Systems for the Recovery of REEs from Bastnaesite, Monazite and Xenotime

Bastnaesite, monazite and xenotime are rare earth minerals (REMs) that are typical sources for rare earth elements (REEs). To advance the understanding of their leaching and precipitation behavior in different hydrometallurgical processes, Eh-pH diagrams were constructed and modified using the HSC 9.9 software. The aqueous stability of rare earth elements in H 2 O and acid leaching systems, i.e., the REE-Ligands-H 2 O systems, were depicted and studied based on the Eh-pH diagrams. This study considers the most relevant lixiviants, their resulting equilibrium states and the importance in the hydrometallurgical recovery of rare earth elements (REMs). A literature review was performed summarizing relevant Eh-pH diagrams and associated thermodynamic data. Shifting stability regions for REEs were discovered with additions of acid ligands and a narrow stability region for soluble REE-(SO 4 /Cl/NO 3 ) complexes under highly acidic conditions. As such, the recovery of REEs can be enhanced by adjusting pH and Eh values. In addition, the Eh-pH diagrams of the major contaminants (i.e., Fe, Ca and Al) in leaching systems were studied. The resulting Eh-pH diagrams provide possible insights into potential passivation on the particle surfaces due to the formation of an insoluble product layer.

Validation of Reanalysis-Based Offshore Wind Resource Characterization Using Lidar Buoy Observations

The offshore wind industry in the U.S. is gaining strong momentum to achieve sustainable energy goals, and the need for observations to provide resource characterization and model validation is greater than ever. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) operates two lidar buoys for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in order to collect hub height wind data and associated meteorological and oceanographic information near the surface in areas of interest for offshore wind development. This work evaluates the performance of commonly used reanalysis products and spatial approximation techniques using lidar buoy observations off the coast of New Jersey and Virginia, USA. Reanalysis products are essential tools in order to set performance expectations and quantify the wind resource variability at a given site. Long-term accurate observations at typical wind turbine hub-heights have been lacking at offshore locations. Using wind speed observations from both lidar buoy deployments, biases and degrees of correspondence for the Modern Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications-2 (MERRA-2), the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR), and the analysis system of the Rapid Refresh (RAP) are examined both at hub height and near surface. Results provide insights on the performance and uncertainty of using reanalysis products for long-term wind resource characterization.

Measurement report: A comparison of ground-level ice-nucleating-particle abundance and aerosol properties during autumn at contrasting marine and terrestrial locations

Abstract. Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) are an essential class of aerosols found worldwide that have far-reaching but poorly quantified climate feedback mechanisms through interaction with clouds and impacts on precipitation. These particles can have highly variable physicochemical properties in the atmosphere, and it is crucial to continuously monitor their long-term concentration relative to total ambient aerosol populations at a wide variety of sites to comprehensively understand aerosol–cloud interactions in the atmosphere. Hence, our study applied an in situ forced expansion cooling device to measure ambient INP concentrations and test its automated continuous measurements at atmospheric observatories, where complementary aerosol instruments are heavily equipped. Using collocated aerosol size, number, and composition measurements from these sites, we analyzed the correlation between sources and abundance of INPs in different environments. Toward this aim, we have measured ground-level INP concentrations at two contrasting sites, one in the Southern Great Plains (SGP) region of the United States with a substantial terrestrially influenced aerosol population and one in the Eastern North Atlantic Ocean (ENA) region with a primarily marine-influenced aerosol population. These measurements examined INPs mainly formed through immersion freezing and were performed at a ≤ 12 min resolution and with a wide range of heterogeneous freezing temperatures (Ts above −31 °C) for at least 45 d at each site. The associated INP data analysis was conducted in a consistent manner. We also explored the additional offline characterization of ambient aerosol particle samples from both locations in comparison to in situ data. From our ENA data, on average, INP abundance ranges from ≈ 1 to ≈ 20 L−1 (−30 °C ≤ T ≤ −20 °C) during October–November 2020. Backward air mass trajectories reveal a strong marine influence at ENA with 75.7 % of air masses originating over the Atlantic Ocean and 96.6 % of air masses traveling over open water, but analysis of particle chemistry suggests an additional INP source besides maritime aerosols (e.g., sea spray aerosols) at ENA. In contrast, 90.8 % of air masses at the SGP location originated from the North American continent, and 96.1 % of the time, these air masses traveled over land. As a result, organic-rich SGP aerosols from terrestrial sources exhibited notably high INP abundance from ≈ 1 to ≈ 100 L−1 (−30 °C ≤ T ≤ −15 °C) during October–November 2019. The probability density function of aerosol surface area-scaled immersion freezing efficiency (ice nucleation active surface site density; ns) was assessed for selected freezing temperatures. While the INP concentrations measured at SGP are higher than those of ENA, the ns(T) values of SGP (≈ 105 to ≈ 107 m−2 for −30 °C ≤ T ≤ −15 °C) are reciprocally lower than ENA for approximately 2 orders of magnitude (≈ 107 to ≈ 109 m−2 for −30 °C ≤ T ≤ −15 °C). The observed difference in ns(T) mainly stems from varied available aerosol surface areas, Saer, from two sites (Saer,SGP > Saer,ENA). INP parameterizations were developed as a function of examined freezing temperatures from SGP and ENA for our study periods.

A catalogue of devices applicable to the measurement of boundary layers and wakes on flight vehicles

A literature search was conducted to assemble a catalog of devices and techniques which have possible application to boundary layer and wake measurements on flight vehicles. The indices used in the search were NACA, NASA STAR, IAA, USGRDR and Applied Science and Technology Index. The period covered was 1950 through 1970. The devices contained in the catalog were restricted to those that provided essentially direct measurement of velocities, pressures and shear stresses. Pertinent material was included in the catalog if it contained either an adequate description of a device and associated performance data or a presentation of applicable information on a particular measurement theory and/or technique. When available, illustrations showing the configuration of the device and test condition data were also included.

Automated attendance accounting system

An automated accounting system useful for applying data to a computer from any or all of a multiplicity of data terminals is disclosed. The system essentially includes a preselected number of data terminals which are each adapted to convert data words of decimal form to another form, i.e., binary, usable with the computer. Each data terminal may take the form of a keyboard unit having a number of depressable buttons or switches corresponding to selected data digits and/or function digits. A bank of data buffers, one of which is associated with each data terminal, is provided as a temporary storage. Data from the terminals is applied to the data buffers on a digit by digit basis for transfer via a multiplexer to the computer.

Some textures in Apollo 12 lunar igneous rocks and in terrestrial analogs.

The interpretation of immature crystallization and some lunar textures characterized by it are the principal objectives of this investigation. A comparative and selective approach is adopted, and particular reference is made to the form and textural relations of olivine in 12009 and of pyroxenes and plagioclase in 12021, and to terrestrial analogs. The optic orientation of the olivines in 12009 is determined, and their skeletal crystallization is illustrated and evaluated. Microprobe and optical data are associated in a textural analysis of an analog from the upper contact of a minor intrusion in Skye. The optic orientation of pyroxene enclosed in plagioclase cores is determined, and the results are plotted stereographically. The need for greater precision in the use of textural terms is stressed, and a new term - intrafasciculate - is introduced for textures in which pyroxene has crystallized within hollow, skeletal plagioclase. Apollo 12 pyroxene-phyric basalts are texturally reviewed, and the crystallization of the phenocrysts is discussed, emphasis being placed on size-independence of skeletal growth.

Microwave emission from stars.

An attempt is made to summarize the observations of masered emission from stars and to outline some basic conclusions that can be drawn from the data. The association of masered microwave emission with well studied objects like stars makes it possible to use the information gathered by conventional optical observations to attack the general masering problem and, conversely, the radio observations may be used to obtain information about a star not readily accessible optically, such as the mass loss rate or the physical conditions in a circumstellar shell.

Mechanical properties of eutectic bonded boron aluminum

Results are presented of extensive testing recently completed on boron-aluminum composites to determine mechanical property data for structural design and analysis. Average property data and associated test methods are given for unidirectional and cross plied laminates at room temperature and 600 F. Results from crippling tests of hat-shaped stringers and mechanical fastener joint tests of laminates containing titanium interleaves are also presented. Compared to aluminum which has approximately same density, tests show that boron-aluminum loaded in compression is 4 1/2 times stronger and 3 1/2 times stiffer. When loaded in tension it is 2 times stronger and 3 times stiffer.

Bone mineral computation with a rectilinear scanner

A portable rectilinear transmission scanner and associated computerized data reduction techniques for estimating bone mineral content are described. This unit can be easily disassembled for transport to various measurement sites and has been used to estimate the bone mineral content of the os calcis, radius, and ulna in the Apollo and Skylab astronauts. The scanner is used to obtain multiple rows of data from which a bone profile is derived. Bone edges are determined with the aid of a digital computer program which employs an algorithm that determines the greatest rate of change of the counting rate.

An application of the Ogee tip

Wind tunnel tests show that the aerodynamic performance of a rectangular 3-D wing is increased by changing its tip to an ogee shape. Potential gains in both cruise and climb performances for a modified Beech Baron aircraft indicate that incremental changes in performance are on the order of the data scatter associated with applied flight test techniques.
