Measurement of $J/ψ$ production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV

The production cross-sections of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 5 TeV are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.13 ± 0.18 pb -1 , collected by the LHCb experiment. The cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity, y, and separately for J/ψ mesons produced promptly and from beauty hadron decays (nonprompt). With the assumption of unpolarised J/ψ mesons, the production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic range 0 < p T < 20 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5 are σ prompt J/Ψ = 8.154 ± 0.010 ± 0.283 μb, σnonprompt J/Ψ = 0.820 ± 0.003 ± 0.034 μb, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These cross-sections are compared with those at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and 13 TeV, and are used to update the measurement of the nuclear modification factor in proton-lead collisions for J/ψ mesons at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.

J/ψ production at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV

The production of inclusive, prompt and non-prompt J/ψ was studied for the first time at midrapidity (–1.37 < y cms < 0.43) in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive J/ψ mesons were reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel in the transverse momentum (p T ) interval 0 < p T < 14 GeV/c and the prompt and non-prompt contributions were separated on a statistical basis for p T > 2 GeV/c. The study of the J/ψ mesons in the dielectron channel used for the first time in ALICE online single-electron triggers from the Transition Radiation Detector, providing a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 689 ± 13 μb –1 . The proton-proton reference cross section for inclusive J/ψ was obtained based on interpolations of measured data at different centre-of-mass energies and a universal function describing the p T -differential J/ψ production cross sections. The p T -differential nuclear modification factors R pPb of inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ψ are consistent with unity and described by theoretical models implementing only nuclear shadowing.

Measurement of the associated production of a top-antitop-quark pair and a Higgs boson decaying into a $b\bar{b}$ pair in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC

This paper reports the measurement of Higgs boson production in association with a $t\bar{t}$ pair in the $H$ → $b\bar{b}$ decay channel. The analysis uses 140 fb -1 of 13 TeV proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The final states with one or two electrons or muons are employed. An excess of events over the expected background is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.6 (5.4) standard deviations. The $t\bar{t}$ $H$ cross-section is $σ_{t\bar{t} H}$ = $411^{+101}_{-92}$ fb = $411 ± 54$ (stat.) $^{+85}_{-75}$ (syst.) fb for a Higgs boson mass of 125.09 GeV, consistent with the prediction of the Standard Model of $507^{+35}_{-75}$ fb. The cross-section is also measured differentially in bins of the Higgs boson transverse momentum within the simplified template cross-section framework.

First Measurement of the Flux-Averaged Differential Charged-Current Electron-Neutrino and Antineutrino Cross Section on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

The MicroBooNE experiment uses a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) located at Fermilab, Chicago. MicroBooNE is able to detect neutrinos from two accelerators: on-axis from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) and off-axis from the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI). While one of the primary objectives of the MicroBooNE experiment is to search for short-baseline neutrino oscillations using the BNB, it also has a rich program of R\&D, neutrino-argon cross section measurements and beyond the standard model searches. This thesis presents a detailed study of the off-axis neutrino flux from the NuMI beam at MicroBooNE as well as measurements of the charged current flux-averaged total and differential electron neutrino and antineutrino cross section on argon using this beam. The data used in these measurements was taken during the first year of MicroBooNE running while the NuMI beam was in forward horn current mode. These are the first high statistics measurement s of ele ctron neutrino argon interactions and include the first measurement of this cross section as a function of the outgoing electron energy and with full angular coverage. The measurement is compared to the GENIE and NuWro generators and shows consistency with both.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle b-jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

A measurement of the inclusive b-jet production cross section is presented in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, using data collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The jets were reconstructed in the central rapidity region |η| < 0.5 from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameter R = 0.4. Identification of b jets exploits the long lifetime of b hadrons, using the properties of secondary vertices and impact parameter distributions. The p T -differential inclusive production cross section of b jets, as well as the corresponding inclusive b-jet fraction, are reported for pp and p-Pb collisions in the jet transverse momentum range 10 ≤ p T,ch jet ≤ 100 GeV/c, together with the nuclear modification factor, $R^{b-jet}_{pPb}$. The analysis thus extends the lower p T limit of b-jet measurements at the LHC. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with unity, indicating that the production of b jets in p-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is not affected by cold nuclear matter effects within the current precision. The measurements are well reproduced by POWHEG NLO pQCD calculations with PYTHIA fragmentation.

New O+CO2 Scattering Cross Sections and Their Impact on Photochemical Atmospheric Escape of Oxygen from Mars

Dissociative recombination of O2+ and CO2+ molecular ions in the upper atmosphere of Mars is a major source of suprathermal (hot) oxygen atoms. A significant fraction of hot O atoms are sufficiently fast to overcome Mars' gravitational potential and escape to space. This mechanism is known as photochemical escape (PE) and found to be one of the major escape mechanisms presently active on Mars. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission (MAVEN) can constrain the PE rate from measurements of electron temperature and density and ion temperature and density. Escape probabilities of hot O can then be constructed from in-situ neutral densities and escaping O flux loss due to collisions with atmospheric background gases. Due to CO2 abundance in the upper atmosphere, O+CO2 scattering is the most important sink of the escaping hot O flux that strongly affects estimates of total atomic oxygen escape rate obtained from MAVEN data, as outlined above. New O+CO2 elastic and inelastic cross sections were constructed from first principles for collision energies from 0.01-5 eV. O(3P)+CO2 collisions were described using new 4D electronic potential energy surfaces (PESs) for restricted geometries. Three lowest triplet states of CO2 were considered for symmetric, bending, and asymmetric vibrational modes. The cross sections were determined from close-coupling calculations performed on individual surfaces using vibrating rotor approximations for CO2 molecule. Differential and momentum transfer cross sections, of use in energy transfer atmospheric models, were also constructed. The obtained cross sections are in excellent agreement with published results. Our new elastic cross sections are significantly smaller than assumed in earlier atmospheric escape models, resulting in larger photochemical escape rate of O from Mars, as estimated from a 1D escape model. Our results agree well with estimated hot O flux (about 9 x 10(sup 25) s(sup -1)) derived from altitude profiles of 130.4 nm O emission measured up to ~4,000 km by the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph on MAVEN orbiter.

Selection of a Pair of Experiments to Optimally Reduce Uncertainty in Targeted Nuclear Data

We propose a novel process to select a pair of differential and integral experiments that best reduce uncertainties in targeted 239 ⁢Pu nuclear data while compressing the current nuclear data pipeline from 20 to 3 years. 239⁢ Pu nuclear data are poorly understood for neutrons in the intermediate energy range due to sparsity and uncertainty in historical experiments. New experiments targeting this range will enable better understanding of these nuclear data, but choosing the ideal experiments to conduct is challenging. Beginning with a prior distribution represented by samples of nuclear data generated from theory, generalized least squares adjustments are made to incorporate data from historical experiments. To quantify potential uncertainty reduction obtainable from a pair of candidate experiments, we compute the D-optimality criterion of the posterior covariance of intermediate energy range nuclear data compared to the equivalent covariance after additional adjustment to the pair of candidate experiments. Repeating the process for each of many candidate pairs facilitates the final selection. Results support 63⁢ Cu total cross section measurements for differential experiments and alumina and alumina/graphite configurations for integral experiments. This analysis enables choosing differential and integral experiments to be executed concurrently while shortening decision times relative to the current nuclear data pipeline.

Measurement of prompt D + and ${D}_s^{+}$ production in p Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production of prompt D + and $D^+_s$ mesons is studied in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{^{S}NN}$ = 5.02 TeV. The data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (1.58 ± 0.02)nb –1 is collected by the LHCb experiment at the LHC. The differential production cross-sections are measured using D + and $D^+_s$ candidates with transverse momentum in the range of 0 < p T < 14 GeV/c and rapidities in the ranges of 1.5 < y* < 4.0 and –5.0 < y* < –2.5 in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system. For both particles, the nuclear modification factor and the forward-backward production ratio are determined. These results are compared with theoretical models that include initial-state nuclear effects. In addition, measurements of the cross-section ratios between D + , $D^+_s$ and D 0 mesons are presented, providing a baseline for studying the charm hadronization in lead-lead collisions at LHC energies.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

Measurements of inclusive charged-particle jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV and the corresponding nuclear modification factor $R^{ch jet}_{pPb}$ are presented, using data collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed in the central rapidity region |η jet | < 0.5 from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The p T -differential inclusive production cross section of charged-particle jets, as well as the corresponding cross section ratios, are reported for pp and p-Pb collisions in the transverse momentum range 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 140 GeV/c and 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 160 GeV/c, respectively, together with the nuclear modification factor $R^{ch jet}_{pPb}$ in the range 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 140 GeV/c. The analysis extends the p T range of the previously-reported charged-particle jet measurements by the ALICE Collaboration. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with one and independent of the jet resolution parameter with the improved precision of this study, indicating that the possible influence of cold nuclear matter effects on the production cross section of charged-particle jets in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV is smaller than the current precision. The obtained results are in agreement with other minimum bias jet measurements available for RHIC and LHC energies, and are well reproduced by the NLO perturbative QCD Powheg calculations with parton shower provided by PYTHIA8 as well as by JETSCAPE simulations.

Test of CP-invariance of the Higgs boson in vector-boson fusion production and in its decay into four leptons

A search for CP violation in the decay kinematics and vector-boson fusion production of the Higgs boson is performed in the H → ZZ * → 4 ℓ ( ℓ = e, μ ) decay channel. The results are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 . Matrix element-based optimal observables are used to constrain CP-odd couplings beyond the Standard Model in the framework of Standard Model effective field theory expressed in the Warsaw and Higgs bases. Differential fiducial cross-section measurements of the optimal observables are also performed, and a new fiducial cross-section measurement for vector-boson-fusion production is provided. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of a CP-even Higgs boson.

Measurement of nuclear effects on ψ(2S) production in p-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV

Inclusive ψ (2S) production is measured in p-Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair \( \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} \) = 8.16 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The production of ψ (2S) is studied at forward (203 < y cms < 3 . 53) and backward (-4.46 < y cms < -2.96) centre-of-mass rapidity and for transverse momentum p T < 12 GeV/ c via the decay to muon pairs. In this paper, we report the integrated as well as the y cms - and p T -differential inclusive production cross sections. Nuclear effects on ψ (2S) production are studied via the determination of the nuclear modification factor that shows a strong suppression at both forward and backward centre-of-mass rapidities. Comparisons with corresponding results for inclusive J/ ψ show a similar suppression for the two states at forward rapidity (p-going direction), but a stronger suppression for ψ (2S) at backward rapidity (Pb-going direction). As a function of p T , no clear dependence of the nuclear modification factor is found. The relative size of nuclear effects on ψ (2S) production compared to J/ ψ is also studied via the double ratio of production cross sections [ σ ψ (2S) /σ J /ψ ]pPb/[ σ ψ (2S) /σ J /ψ ] pp between p-Pb and pp collisions. The results are compared with theoretical models that include various effects related to the initial and final state of the collision system and also with previous measurements at \( \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} \) = 5.02 TeV.

Measurement of the jet mass in hadronic decays of boosted W bosons at 13 TeV and extraction of the W boson mass

The jet mass of W bosons decaying to a quark-antiquark pair is measured in W+jets events from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . Hadronic decays of W bosons with high momenta produce strongly collimated decay products due to the large Lorentz boost, and are reconstructed as single large-radius jets. These jets have a characteristic substructure that is exploited to distinguish them from the large background of quark- and gluon-initiated jets. The jet mass is computed using the soft-drop algorithm, which suppresses soft wide-angle radiation that leads to a broadening of the jet mass distribution. For the first time, unfolded measurements are presented of the double-differential W+jets cross section as a function of the jet transverse momentum and soft-drop mass. From these distributions, the W boson mass is obtained, with a value of 80.83 ± 0.55 GeV in a scheme with mass-dependent width, achieving the smallest uncertainty available today from an all-jets final state at a hadron collider.

Insights from multinucleon transfer reactions in 206 Pb+ 118 Sn

Multinucleon transfer reactions for the 206 Pb + 118 Sn system were measured at E lab = 1200 MeV using the PRISMA large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer. The experiment was conducted at laboratory angles around the grazing angle, covering an angular range of approximately 20°. The resulting differential and total cross sections, along with Q-value distributions for various neutron and proton pick-up and stripping channels, are presented. The Q-value distributions suggest a transition from quasi-elastic to deep inelastic collision processes, particularly in channels involving nucleon transfers. The experimental results have been compared with GRAZING code calculations, showing good agreement for few-nucleon transfer channels, while channels with large nucleon transfers are underestimated, indicating the involvement of more complex processes.

The Impulse Approximation Scattering Function and Its Use in Monte Carlo Photon Transport Simulations

The viability of using the impulse approximation scattering function in Monte Carlo photon transport simulations is explored. This scattering function can be constructed from the double differential incoherent scattering cross section developed by Ribberfors and Berggren. A commonly used method for modeling photon Doppler broadening, which is referred to as the hybrid Doppler broadening method, can also be derived from this cross section. A new photon Doppler broadening method, called the consistent Doppler broadening method, is derived and discussed. This method eliminates some of the commonly employed approximations in the hybrid Doppler broadening method, in part, by using the impulse approximation scattering function. Integrated incoherent cross sections generated using the impulse approximation scattering function and the widely used Waller-Hartree scattering function are in good agreement above 20 keV. Below 20 keV, differences as high as 70% are observed, which differs from the roughly 5% differences observed by Ribberfors for some of the materials. Integral and spectral quantities for two problems are also generated using the Monte Carlo photon transport capabilities of the Framework for REsearch in Nuclear ScIence and Engineering (FRENSIE). Due to the small, relative result differences observed when using the impulse approximation scattering function, it is considered a viable alternative to the Waller-Hartree scattering function. In addition, some small, but expected, differences in spectral fluxes at low energies can be avoided by adopting the consistent Doppler broadening method.

A long path-length optical property measurement device for highly transparent detector media

Measurements of the optical properties of highly transparent liquids are necessary for large-scale detectors that seek to detect optical signatures in kiloton-scale or larger volumes. Detailed understanding of the attenuation and scattering properties of fill media is critical to the ability to accurately simulate detector performance, and yet is often unavailable until in-situ measurements can be performed. Moreover, in-situ measurements may rely on effective attenuation lengths or other approximations to characterize performance, rather than absolute measurements of attenuation and scattering. To better understand the optical properties of potential fill media and purification schemes, a system has been developed which provides simultaneous attenuation and differential scattering cross-section measurements for highly transparent liquids. This horizontal, adjustable path-length “long-arm” system provides excellent isolation from the atmosphere, a high degree of vibration insensitivity, and a simple and reliable method of calibration. Further, scattering measurements can be carried out simultaneously at ports along the beamline equipped with optics allowing the selection of scatter angle and polarization. This enables both reliable quantitative scatter measurements and phase-function separation. This system has been extensively tested using deionized (DI) water as a benchmark, and has demonstrated repeatable measurements of attenuation lengths exceeding 100 m and scattering lengths approaching 1 km.

Multistep Coulomb excitation of Ni 64 : Shape coexistence and nature of low-spin excitations

Here, the structure of 64 Ni, the heaviest stable Ni isotope, has been investigated via high-statistics, multistep safe Coulomb excitation to search for shape coexistence, a phenomenon recently observed in neutron-rich 66 Ni and 70 Ni as well as in doubly magic, N = 40, 68 Ni. The study was motivated by recent, state-of-the-art Monte Carlo shell-model calculations (MCSM), where a Hamiltonian with effective interactions incorporating the monopole tensor force predicts the existence of shape coexistence, also in the lower-mass 62,64 Ni isotopes. A set of transition and static E2 matrix elements for both yrast and near-yrast structures was extracted from the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections. From comparisons between the new results and MCSM as well as other shell-model calculations, a clearer picture of the structure of 64 Ni emerges. Specifically, the low-spin states are shown to be dominated by proton and neutron excitations mainly within the fp shell, with minimal contribution from the g 9/2 shape-driving neutron orbital. The agreement between experimental data and MCSM results indicates a small oblate deformation for the $0$$^{+}_{2}$ level and a spherical shape for the $0$$^{+}_{3}$ state. In addition, the small upper limit determined for the B(E2) probability of a transition associated with the decay of the recently observed 3463-keV, $0$$^{+}_{4}$ state agrees with its proposed assignment to a prolate shape, herewith providing first evidence for triple shape coexistence in a stable Ni isotope.

Transfer reactions in 206 $\mathrm{Pb}$ + 118 $\mathrm{Sn}$: From quasielastic to deep-inelastic processes

Here, we measured multinucleon transfer reactions for the 206 Pb+ 118 Sn system at E lab =1200 MeV by employing the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. Differential and total cross sections and Q-value distributions have been obtained for a variety of neutron and proton pick-up and stripping channels. The Q-value distributions show how the quasi-elastic and deep inelastic processes depend on the mass and charge of the transfer products. The corresponding cross sections have been compared with calculations performed with the GRAZING code. An overall good agreement is found for most of the few nucleon transfer channels. The underestimation of the data for channels involving a large number of transferred nucleons indicates that more complicated processes populate the given isotopes.
